I've been skating for 2.5 years (only vert until recently). Although backside is more comfortable I found it easier to get the board away from the wall on a frontside air. It took me a year longer to get a backside air. I have learnt and skated almost entirely by myself, some of the best and most skillful skaters won't even drop in.

true that, where i grew up on the coast of mississippi in the late 80's and 90s, there was literally one vert ramp that was about an hour or so away - painted metal and it was 12.5 feet high, 24 feet wide. everytime I went, it was really only one person there with me, maybe two if the owner was at home( he was really cool and let just about anyone skate whether anyone was at home or not). I never could get the hang of "doing an air" without either early grabbing or poping away from the coping too much adn land far down the ramp, or simply just bailing in the air becuase I couldn't figure out how to catch the board without flailing, lol. I eventually stopped going because I slammed really hard the last time and busted a front tooth in half. What these guys talk about in the video is true - skating with others really does help a lot with learning aind progression. Which is why street skating took off for me(along with miniramp), only one guy(Brian F) I knew actually wanted to skate vert, all the rest didn't(there were less than 10 people I knew that skated) and eventually we had a falling out(basically he started becoming a dick to many people). I do remember one particular day that Brian F. and me showed up at that vert ramp and it just so happened that Omar Hassan showed up about an hour later while we were there and he was absolutely ripping up the place, I was mesmerized by how good he is.
Anyway, few years later I moved out to the DFW area, started going to the old jeff philips skatepark, then later on the "freestyle"skatepark in kennedale(across town from DAllas), then the skatepark out in frisco area (north dallas area), all had vert and I still could never do an air, it just didn't click in my mind.
Mad respect for those that are able to figure it out how and do consistent airs, even if it is just little ones, I could never do it.
