Jean Michael Jarre had a larger concert in Paris a year before this with 2.5 mil and a few years after this show in Brasil with over 3.5 mil people but the significance of this monsters of rock show in Moscow was huge.
My co-worker immigrated from Russia in 1995, he went to this concert and said by the second set over 2 million people were present. He rode a train with fans who travelled 7 days from the Ural Mountain region to attend.
There was another band that played that day, in front of 1.6 million Russians, and that bands name is PANTERA....it's heavier than 1991 Metallica stuff, but you might wanna check them out as well....the entire Pantera album from 1992 called "A Vulgar Display of Power" is incredible...🙂✌🏻🇺🇸

You were right, I liked this upload! I am a Metallica fan and I can tell you a little more about this video. It was 1991 and the Soviet Union had recently dissolved. This made it possible to organize the first rock concert in Moscow. The Monster of Rock was organized and the response from the Russian public was exceptional. 1 million people attended! Really! They played AC / DC, Metallica, Motley Crue, Queensrÿche, The Black Crowes. Under communism, such an event could not happen and anyone who listened to similar groups was considered a dissident. This explains why, with the end of the regime, participation in this event was so important! P.S Ti Amo!
The thing about metal music is that it gives you an outlet to let go. If I'm angry about something, metal chills me out and hypes me up at the same time. Metal is underrated and misunderstood. Some amazing artists in metal!
the back up vocals delivered by Jason are underrated. Metallica has never been the same since pushing him out. that trujillo guy is a good bass player but he can't sing a lick.
In September 1991, only a few days after the August Putsch failed, 1.6 million rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the first open-air rock concert, as part of the Monsters of Rock series.
Not to argue with you, but that isn't accurate. The Moscow Peace Festival occurred a few years before this. Motley Crue, Ozzy, Scorpions were on the bill just to name a few.
So many people don't realize how important a moment this was, not for music but for the world. This wasn't Russia that we know now. This was at the end of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Army standing there with machine guns while the crowd, which was allegedly 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE, went nuts, perhaps for the first time in their lives.
Monsters of Rock tour. 1st major metal concert in Eastern Europe following the fall of the Berlin wall. Estimated 1.6 million attendance. They had been waiting decades for this.

I love watching these reaction videos because for the most part people are watching performers who are their grandparents age or older now. I wonder if they can really picture gramps up their shredding on a guitar and rocking out!
They sold a 100 thousand tickets ir something and officials estimated 1.5 million people showed up and stormed the grounds so they brought in the military...there was no way the band's couldn't go on..they had to for fear of riot..so the show went on and it was legend! Historic!
It was a free concert they didn’t sell any tickets lol
@@TheJerseyNinja What were the wrist bands for then?
@@Mr_Joe_B_619 it’s how they counted the first few hundred thousand people, but then they gave up because it was wild and people started hopping fences and shit
So beautiful seeing People enjoying a show after so many years of oppresion.
A legendary metal group that never gets old! 🎶 🎸 🤘
Ill be the 1.6 millionth person to day this, there were 1.6 million people in the audience during Metallica's set
Pantera played the same concert. check them out playing "Domination" mind blowing !!!
Best moment in history... not only in music history, but for the brotherwood bond the linked two of the most enemies people in history, USA citizens and Ussr citizens.
That was a miracle, that only music can do.
1.6 million souls. Talk about an Ethereal experience😇
I get goosebumps every time
I see this footage.
1.6 million at this gig unreal imagine the noise of them
Swear the best thing about the original whole video is when James comes out and says "we got this".
Your reaction is infectious, love to see your enthusiasm. To be honest it’s like Russia’s version of Woodstock
True talent never dies it evolves and that is why in 2021 Metallica is still on top so WELCOME TO WHERE TIME STANDS STILL NO ONE LEAVES AND NO ONE WILL
This was the largest concert at the time I believe only the second Western Rock behind the iron curtain during the end of the Cold War
There's been since a couple of Brazilian concert audiences that were much larger
Not true. This is the largest crowd for a musical concert ever.
1.6 million people all in the same place rocking out to enter the sandman.MAYBE THE BIGGEST HUMAN GATHERING IN HISTORY
No press report ever stated there was 1.6 million people at this Metallica performance
Your smile could charge my Prius.
Lmao
I've never been in a crowd this size, but I've been to several festivals that were outrageously huge, 60-70,000. It's electric.
Many of these people had only ever heard Metallica (or just about any modern rock bands) from 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation copied tapes, just imagine that.
Your face drop was expected for the most packed concert in history, 1.6 million Soviets. 👍 This signified to the rest of the world that Russians were free from the communist regime.
Haha and look at them now. A fascist state, like the end result of every single one under capitalism
1.6 million people never ceases to amaze me
My babygirl just saw the best concert ever in history! Good girl.
that is the baby girl in the building giving us some good reaction again. Thank you very much for always blessings us with your great talent. Keep it up and God bless!
Metallica’s 1991 performance in the Soviet Union is LEGENDARY!! It looks like half the planet was there.
The excitement in that crowd was for the freedom they finally felt.
Ok, you've got a new subscriber off this reaction :)
Aww, thank you!❤️
@@MorenikejiTaiwo Ok, the last dare worked out, so I dare you to react to Billy Idol's Rebel Yell-Official video. This is a classic rocker from the 1980's. I double dare you...lol
1.6 million...Rockin' to Metallica! INSANE!
I was hoping towards the end of that song you would’ve got up and started swinging your hair around like the guitarist!! 😂
😂
I was thinking the same thing!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Fall of the Iron curtain rang out into the horizon to the sound of Metallica.
Great reaction maybe try “ fade to black “ or “ the unforgiven” next studio version you gonna be happy with Metallica!!!
I grew up listening to Metallica, saw them live too. Great video. Love you favorite baby girl in the building 💜💜💜💜
If I'm not wrong they were pretty much the first metal band from West doing a live show in Russia after the Wall was down, that is why it was epic. :)
Close enough
P.S Ti Amo!
Ooh I see, thanks for the info🥰
"the Germans sent armies to bring peace to Russia, America sent 4 dudes with long hair"
A few bands played at this event.
Pantera performed there as well, and kicked a**....
Swedish guys.
@@NeilKelly_is_angryexpat Swedish guys? Sweden have not conqured Moskva since 1617 or so as far as I know
Damn right, and those 4 dudes ripped them up!!!
The thing about metal music is that it gives you an outlet to let go. If I'm angry about something, metal chills me out and hypes me up at the same time. Metal is underrated and misunderstood. Some amazing artists in metal!
the back up vocals delivered by Jason are underrated. Metallica has never been the same since pushing him out. that trujillo guy is a good bass player but he can't sing a lick.
correct !
In September 1991, only a few days after the August Putsch failed, 1.6 million rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the first open-air rock concert, as part of the Monsters of Rock series.
The moments the goodness of humanity make us forget just how shitty we can be.
That right there is history being made moments like these should never be forgotten
This is in Russia and they were the 1st Heavy Metal to play there.
Not to argue with you, but that isn't accurate. The Moscow Peace Festival occurred a few years before this. Motley Crue, Ozzy, Scorpions were on the bill just to name a few.
Lies
The look on your face kiddo is priceless! *grins*
The End of The Cold War, I was 15 at the time.
Are you taking credit for ending it?
Ever since Rock N Roll was born the world has never been the same it got better.
Ah the good ol' days when James could remember ALL of the lyrics to a song in a live performance :P
He doesn't need to remember them anymore, the crowd sings it for him at this point. Some of the most devoted fans in the world, hands down.
Your reaction made the old song come back to life !
please try slipknot
Here we go. First of a million suggestions.

Coming out of shit box communism, these Russians were starving for some serious metal!!
To the point of buzzing the crowd with low flying helicopters for effect; rocking it!
And now we are slipping in that direction
@@Mr05Chuck Only if we sit back and let it happen.
Monsters of Rock tour. 1st major metal concert in Eastern Europe following the fall of the Berlin wall. Estimated 1.6 million attendance. They had been waiting decades for this.
