Nah Melbourne in October is either Sunny no wind no clouds 21 - 25 C or really windy, really wet 15 - 20 C, often times flipping between one and the other several times in an Hour. There is a reason why we locals call it as having 4 seasons in one day
Housing prices got so high most of the more colourful people from St Kilda moved out. They have tours of the old place Nick Cave and co used to play. There is a venue around the back now that has gigs regularly and a pizza place that is 50 years old in 2024. They do remember you even if you have not been for several years.
Someone I know got married in the St Kilda Botanical gardens. They were adamant I come down for their kid's 1st birthday and then sprung it on everyone. Some people had gone to get drinks when the ceremony happened so few people knew. I still had the photos on one of my cameras 7 years later as I took down a spare one.
And now I shall respond to everything! The tower the light's reflecting off at the very beginning is the Eureka Tower. It's upper section is covered in a semi-transparent gold leaf. It is the largest residential building in the Southern Hemisphere. Spreadable Butter is common in the United States from what I've gathered from asking around maybe not Canada? St. Kilda's seedy past was around the 70's and 80's when illegal street prostitution was commonplace. After the legalization of prostitution the area cleaned up nicely to become very expensive. The birds you saw were probably Rosellas or Galahs. Galahs are large pink parrots and Rosellas are small red birds. The city's layout is very much like a "Mashup of england and america" That was the point of the original settlers who almost exclusively came from england Victoria is a state, not a province. "6 bakeries" Yes. Melbourne has a lot of bakeries. I don't know why but almost everything is a bakery now. 13 dollars IS indeed a lot. I wouldn't pay more then $3.50 for a pastry. But also our minimum wage is $22 an hour so people have more money in general. Real Estate signs are a thing I never knew was a uniquely australian thing but apparently that is the case. Although not all properties get a nice full sign like that Melbourne weather is weird. In October the weather can go from being cold and windy to hot and sunny to raining in the span of an hour. Seasons are more like guidelines.

Little bit late of a response, but considering the amount of backeries and where they were walking it was probably Ackland street, in which case there is a lot more than 6 backeries and 13 dollars is about the going rate for pastries like that.
He IS missing out! I buy softened butter ALL the time... They make it by mixing liquid oils (like olive oil or Sunflower oil etc) in with the butter so that it stays soft even when cold

It's more expensive than what I think of as 'baking' butter but you should be able to find in the more out-of-sightline shelves of the dairy cases in BC supermarkets..."Lactinia" is a brand that goes all out on 'fancy' varieties of butter. You should try some of their "cinnamon and brown sugar" stuff on a slice of toast...
One thing about Melbourne that I always notice whenever someone from somewhere else has filmed it (as opposed to, y'know, when I'm walking around in the city that I live in) is the amount of bluestone (basalt) that we use. Most of the gutters and alleyways that you could see in this video were paved with bluestone, which I am given to understand is a quite specifically Melbourne thing. If you go all the way into the city quite a few of the buildings are straight-up built out of it, or at least have a few courses of bluestone blocks making up the bottom meter or so aboveground
At first I was excited to watch because I find these vlogs relaxing. But seeing how people react to things I'm used to here in Aus is an interesting experience! Getting to see my home country through new eyes! Excited to see what happens!

I love that channeled Dave's Spokesman near the end. That was great. Also, yeah, that weather does not seem too different from any of the West Coast NA areas in the fall.
The dave's spokesman voice is how Graham talks when he wants to accentuate a particular topic, he talks like that a lot. I'm not saying it isn't awesome to see Dave's spokesman in his vlogs, I'm only stating that it's not that rare.

I'm quite enjoying your Australia trip vlog. I know of St. Kilda's from Kerry Greenwood's "Phryne Fisher" mystery series which is set in the late 1920s. There's also three seasons of TV programs "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" which was filmed in and around Melbourne including at the amusement park that you walked by on the way to the beach "Luna Park". Thank you for doing this; looking forward to the rest of the trip.
Yeah those Rainbow something birds and big plants are a major part of what I remember about going to Australia to see family 18 years ago (shit I'm getting old). We went during their winter but being from Ontario and stupid kids me and my brother weren't going to miss a chance to swim in the ocean, the locals thought we were crazy.

St Kilda is largely a tourist trap these days. As someone else said the 'Seedy Past' was due to prostitution, but it also had a hugely thriving art community in the 70's and 80's. The Crystal Ballroom is where a lot of Seminal Aus Punk bands played back in the day (Nick Cave's first band the Boys Next Door/ Birthday Party played there a lot for instance). I have chatted to a lot of people who lived there when the houses were cheap and they're horrified at what St Kilda has become.

What do people do when they meet you at PAX? I walked by the meet and greet area last year and it was empty, so I looked over and was like woah! Those guys are awesome and there's no line! $13 is not fine for two Australian pastries. Where are you buying your pastries from? OK, so a lot of places charge that much for two pastries, but my point stands that it's not a normal amount of money to charge for pastries in my opinion.

BIargityBlarg The entire west of the city' geology is made of basalt. It's the most abundant stone around. It is uniquely Melbournian.

$13 is fine for 2 pastries because minimum wage is like $22 per hour

$13 is not fine for two Australian pastries. Where are you buying your pastries from? OK, so a lot of places charge that much for two pastries, but my point stands that it's not a normal amount of money to charge for pastries in my opinion.
