What it would be to own a meticulous , beautiful handcrafted mandolin or a guutar by such a very wonderful humble person as Wayne Henderson. A treasure to behold in your hands...priceless !!!!
I have a 1979 Henderson mandolin #33, which is a copy of a Lloyd Loar 1922 F5 instrument. I recently had the chance to play a Loar F5 from the early 1920's. The 2 mandolins sounded so much alike it was shocking. Henderson is an amazing craftsman!
I just recently joined a band called “Coal Canyon” and made my main instrument a guitar. I have to upgrade soon because we have been blessed in getting some great shows like Ralph Stanley’s festival and poppy mountain in morehead, ky. I’d like to think I could get one but … oh my! Dream!!!! And lots of prayers! 😂 What’s really cool is I know some guys that have done business with Wayne in the past in getting him some wood to build with. I’m hoping that maybe I can get an introduction soon.
Andrew Marlin from Mandolin Orange. Great player and singer. Managed to see him and Emily twice in Scotland. Can't remember what they changed their name to but think it was a mistake. They had a big following under the Mandolin Orange name and most folks I know haven't a clue what they are called now.
Hand crafted beauty, excellent craftsmanship. I’m sure she’ll feel and sound great. Anyone ever hear of Don Williams or Ricky Skaggs? Each are the real deal honest musician!
Guy is just good. You don’t know til u get one in your hands just how good. Til ya do, that’s all I can say. And from what I’ve seen he just gets better and better with time.
Thank you WAYNE ! the time honered tradition of mandolin construction of the F style, principal to the 3 main modern mandolin styles F A and O.The 19th century almost led with German euroism which featured the mandolinero which I believe was tuned in 12 pairs tripled tuned D A E B in alto fourth below A 440 G tuning. The no name Chinese F style that sells for 100.00 has a 14 inch scale!Ideal for alto tuning of D,as 19th century saw lower range tunings of guitar, mandolin and banjo, and mandolinero often in a open back banjolin form.Chris Young see Barbara Salisbury /UA-cam.
I play mandolin with fingerpicks myself in addition to crosspicking with a regular flatpick. In fact, about 25 years ago at one of our bluegrass festivals, I actually had Jesse McReynolds convinced into thinking I was doing some serious crosspicking until he actually saw me using fingerpicks. He remarked: "That's cheatin'...you really had me fooled for a minute!" I tend to agree. Jesse McReynolds is often imitated...NEVER duplicated! If I could play one-fourth as good as him, I'd be happy!
Not very common to pick the mando with fingerpicks. Wayne is not really a mandolin player. But some guys I know up in the mountains would play mando with fingerpicks like Gerald Anderson (fine luthier and multi instrumentist from Grayson County, Va). There are no rules anywhere. Fine dobro player Tut Taylor plays with a flat pick unlike most dobro players thatuse fingerpicks.
lovely video and sound!! wow!! i was just wondring...at 6:00 did I see wayne using a thumb pick????? is it unusual to use a thumb pick or is it whatever a person feels they want to use and prefer? is it a common practice?.. thank you for your response, and I am just now trying to learn how to play mandolin,i would like to try the thumb pick also ty
I have a 1978 Henderson mandolin. I have played 4 different signed Loyd Loar mandolins, and the Henderson sounds better than any of the Loars. I have people walk across fields at festivals and say, what in the world are you playing, I heard it from a mile away.
WOW! That mandolin didn't sound brand new, more like it was already 20 years old! You KNOW what that means, in 20 years, it'll sound 20 times better....
I can't believe what I just saw! He's moving that bridge 'left and right' to contour it, instead of 'front to back'!???... I thought 'front-to-back was the way to get a perfect contour??

Thanks for allowing us to "enter" his shop and watch this! Cool!

Beautiful craftsmanship, awesome picking. Thanks for posting it.
What a beauty! My fave strung instrument ♥️
I’ve never had the honor of playing a mandolin made by Wayne but several guitars. WOW.. THATS ALL I CAN SAY!
Wayne Henderson makes the finest instruments in the world today. He's the modern day Antonio Stradivari.

Fairly certain that the man in the red striped shirt @ 7:47 is Andrew Marlin, who is 1/2 of the Mandolin Orange duo.
Awesome mandolin!
Love it!
charles pettee and andrew marlin(of mandolin orange) doin the picking
Simon Dunson I just noticed that, Andrew is a helluva songwriter.

"There are no rules anywhere" You just described rock and roll my friend or at least that's what I was taught when learning guitar.

If I drink Pabst, is there a chance I can play like that. Okay, didn't think so.
Heyyyy Mr Marlin ✌️❤️⚡️💙
wayne should build his own coffin now why he can, pearl inlay top, and leave it in the shop for a conversational piece.
How do you get a hold of Wayne,?????
Dude what! is this mandolin orange?
How you know he is a true craftsman? He wipes his fingers off on his pants!
I'd take Wayne's mandolin over a Gibson f-5

What they start at 7:45 is NOT Carrol County Blues!.. After drinking enough of what looks like Pabst Blue Ribbon it may sound like it to them!
You're very welcome!
I reckon you're right!
I would say "Carroll County Blues".
Never played mandolin but this is freaking awesome :)
