  • For some D-Day began when the first allied boots hit the invasion beaches at 06:30 hours. For others, it began with the first shots being fired over Normandy just after 01:30 hours. This is the story of the first aerial combat during Operation Overlord, and it begins with a Kiwi pilot from No. 605 Squadron.

As ever I've made some pronunciation errors in this video, the joy of late night recording, see if you can spot them! 😀

V1 flying bombs (doodlebugs) flew at about 400 mph. Mosquito had a top speed barely any faster so they had to thrash the engines to reach a V1. Then risk damage when the 800kg warhead exploded. That really doesn’t sound like tedious work.

    Kiwi tradies... Enough said

Reading the log it took 29min to get to France which seems reasonable for a 23 mile journey from Manston to the Pas de Calais

These sorties were successful even if they saw no combat. They kept almost all of the Luftwaffe in France away from the beaches.

There is another claim for the first enemy aircraft shot down on D Day, coincidentally also by a Kiwi pilot, John Houlton who was flying ML-407 (now known as the Grace Spitfire) also claiming a JU-88. In the Houlton page it does mention the Mosquito claim as "likely" the first claim on D-Day. Whichever is the premier claim it was a Kiwi. 😁

Monstrous armament on the Mosquito. 4 20mm cannon, 4 .303 machine guns. I think they would've been better off though with 2 .50 cals swapped in for the 4 .303s. After about 1941 or 1942, .303s were not of any use except maybe anti-personnel work on the ground.
