Literally! There's so much to love about the character. Even as a counselor, it was interesting seeing him still try to be open and understanding. His one Downfall with his politics, was simply applying his unrelatable perspective of someone who's lived way longer than any human. It made Jayce and Victor feel like he had no recognition nor care for the briefness of their human mortality, and Jayce used that against him, seeing as much of the council is also human.
And then that leads into his character arc as he sees how the people of the undercity have been living this whole time
@@Aandi_pants All the characters in the show have flaws and Heimerdinger is not an exception. His flaw was that he was extremely ignorant to the situation unfolding in his own city. In his entire 300 year lifespan he finally went into the undercity for the first time and saw what his inaction did to the people of the underground. It reminds me of the story of Buddha, the prince who was ignorant to the pain and suffering of the lower class, and had his world view changed from seeing all the suffering of his own people. Him being with Ekko has me really excited though, love both their characters, so I can’t wait to see how they both grow in season 2.

Where are my Vander stans? Single dad who managed to not only raise 4 trouble children but basically rule the entirety of Zaun with little trouble. Vander is underappreciated and I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT.

I love how they didn't go soft on Jayce and really are making him be the asshole he is supposed to be in the lore. I was afraid they were gonna reduce him to "handsome man does handsome man things" but the team behind Arcane was amazing with adapting the characters.

If you want "stick your head up your ass and never give any mental concessions" you can just wait until they visit Demacia. I don't really get the Jayce hate, he didn't fall as much as he learned what it took to lead the city, a lesson we know Vander learned before the first scene on the bridge, and I haven't heard a single negative word about him. He always did what he thought was reasonable at the time, and I can't blame him for it. His character arc was coming to terms with the fact he couldn't "hammer" (see what I did there?) his way to his goals. If he acted like a boy scout he would've accomplished absolutely nothing, is that honestly what the critics want?
I'm the "can't stop raving about the show" and "silco complex". I loved how Silco went from a true villain to me actually upset at the end with what happened to him. I loved the show from beginning to end and can't wait for season 2
I also felt that he actually ended out wanting a reasonable treaty with Piltover before Jayce decided to invade.
I feel he almost did a 180 with his character. At the start he was pretty much screaming "I WANT WAR, ALL OF THEM DEAD, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT VANDER, YOU'RE NOT PREPARED TO SACRIFICE ANYTHING" and then he is negotiating peaceful independence and he is even willing to stop making drugs, and also he wouldn't give up Jinx.
I would have loved to see if he was going to negotiate another deal after the whole council agreed to be willing to give Zaun independence, but things happened.
i love ekko so much,, we haven’t seen much of him yet but god damn that bridge fight scene with jinx indeed lives in my head 24/7

I FEEL SO BAD FOR JAYCE like they conveyed his inner battle well - he was a kid who literally just had a dream who was thrust into a position of power when he really didn't know what he was doing. Everyone, including those closest to him like Caitlyn, Victor and Heimerdinger were all looking to him and he would be betraying someone he cares about no matter what he would do. Like it's a huge life or death situation and through no fault of his, he's failing everyone
this is the only good analysis of Jayce's character in my opinion.

@@cussundriakneal9904 Exactly! There are points where he does come off as an asshole, but honestly? Pretty much all the characters in this show have their moments like that. Jayce's character is really well thought out, and they showed his inner struggle so well throughout the show. I'm really excited to see where he goes next.

To be honest, I really expected a bunch of people just crying.
Despite the fact that I am really happy with a lot of stuff (especially the Vi and caitlyn scenes), I was a mental train wreak after the end of 'The Monster you Created' and I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried like a little child.
And I know for a fact that I wasn't the only one.
I watched it 4 times now. And I still start crying.
I can understand why people cry. My gf cried too during that episode. But I'm starting to think I'm broken bc I never cried or felt like it lol. I did feel pretty bad for the whole situation though.

I'm baffled by how people can cry so easily to something not real, as the most I ever got out of me was one year, when I felt powerless. To drop this intellectual talk I somehow made up, I only ever cried to a show you weren't supposed to cry about, and it was when someone in the show seemed powerless, and because I was too in that situation, I shed one.
The episode 3 finale hit me like a bullet train, im still not good after that...

On board the "Silco is a complex character" train! He is neither a great father nor a terrible one, he makes mistakes and while his love for Jinx is real he has a twisted image of who she should be.
But the reason that he is a father in the first place is fucked up. He absolutely told his henchman to kill Vander (sorry forgot the name of the blonde boy) and then manipulated her into thinking she needs to hate Vi and that she's. Of course he cares about her, as would everyone else do if you adopted someone for 6 years, but that doesn't mean that he was an ok father. He just didnt turn Jinx in or let her die lmao.
He is complex but he is a downright horrible father, intentionally or not. That is just and undeniable fact my friend
The thing about Silco in my opinion is that the thing people often see as redeeming (his relationship with Jinx) is one of the worst things he does. Silco is incredibly manipulative, and a bad father (He tries to help Jinx succeed but he knows so little of mental health that he just makes everything worse by indulging her worst impulses after a traumatic experience), but in terms of his reactions to the political situation, he was almost completely right. His end goal was to make Zaun independent, and it's clear through his actions that he's trying to do that. Unlike Marcus, who props up the corruption in the underground out of a misguided attempt to keep it out of Piltover, Silco does so in order to prevent the chaos that would arise from a lack of leadership in an area so filled with corruption (and despite his best efforts, he's almost overthrown by the corrupt elites of the city). Unlike Vander, who was broken by the battle on the bridge, Silco remained committed, which is part of why he protects Jinx so much, as the only person capable of producing the firepower she can. He was a morally reprehensible person when it came to personal matters, but he solved the problem of Zaun's independence in the only way possible (superior firepower). The only reason that solution wasn't necessary in the end was that Vi managed to break Jayce's resolve. If that hadn't happened, all out war would have broken out, and Silco would have been shown to be irrevocably right.
Well and the fact that Silco actively encouraged destructive behaviors in Powder/Jinx whilst Vander did the opposite. I truly think that Silco saw a bit of himself in Jinx, just as Vander sees himself in Vi.
The difference between them is that in the first three episodes we see Vander discourage Vi from making the same mistakes he did, and encouraging her to be responsible with her leadership around the others.
Silco, on the other hand, not only encouraged Powder/Jinx to do the things that he’d done, but it seems to me really fostered an environment for her mental health to take a spiral.
Basically what I’m saying is that just because a parent loves their child, doesn’t mean they’re a good parent. I’d argue that Silco’s love for Jinx doesn’t excuse him from allowing his destructive behaviors to affect her the way they did.
Edit: I do want to be clear since I’ve seen some responses, I find Silco’s character to be one of my favorites. And I know it’s sweet to see a character who, we as the viewer see as a antagonist, be kind to a beloved character. But the reality of this relationship is that it’s unhealthy and most certainly manipulative. I do understand that Silco has done good by Jinx as well and I’m not discounting that, but I can’t discount the bad he’s done just because he’s been a father figure to Jinx. Sometimes, especially in real life, well intentioned parents make decisions that harm their children based on their own past traumas and desires to protect their children. Good intentions isn’t enough to me to excuse bad actions.
So TLDR, Silco is a gloriously flawed character and that makes for good writing. I still view his relationship with Jinx as unhealthy and that’s what makes the character interesting. But you know how it’s said, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And even then not all of Silco’s intentions were pure. He may not be the best father, but he’s a damn good character and I’ll die on that hill.
@@H-Lark absolutely! Couldn’t have said it better myself. I too noticed that he does really love her, but what I noticed first was his manipulation. That stood out like a sore thumb the moment he talked to her after the monkey scene in episode 3

The issues with Silco and Jinx is people believe he manipulated her just to get back at her sister, when in reality Silco fully believed Vi abandoned Jinx, that's why he was surprised she was back for her, he confessed it himself he had no idea she was still even alive (as discussed with Jinx when she repeatedly stabbed/poked his face) and during that scene not once did Silco ever try to push Jinx off of him and was patient, it upsets me thinking Silco was just using Jinx but he really did care about her and thought Vi abandoned her, that's why he grew such a strong connection to Jinx. He may have been an absolute terrible person and I wasn't sure how to feel when he died, but he did do his best to he a father to Jinx and even called her his daughter. In conclusion this show has ruined me.
Actually Silco believed she was dead because that was the deal he made with Marcus. He told Marcus to kill Vi but instead he arrested her without Silco knowing. Silco didn't believe that Vi abandoned Jinx but that is what he wanted Jinx to believe. When he told Jinx that Vi was back for the hextech and not for her is a perfect example of that. He knew Vi was here for Jinx because she literally told him that in the scene before the sisters reunited but he was deliberately manipulating Jinx into thinking otherwise. I don't think he was manipulating Jinx to "get back at her sister." He was doing it to ensure that Jinx remained reliant on him. He sees Vi as a threat because he knows that she has a chance of getting through to Jinx and he knows how much Vi means to Jinx, so he manipulates her because he doesn't want her to leave him. Yes Silco cares about Jinx but his love for her is incredibly toxic.
I think a good way to look at it is that Silco does love Jinx, and will do anything to keep her, as we've seen about three to four times now, to a very great extent.
But he is not necessarily a good father, because he does not give a shit about Powder, and seems to view her as a separate person entirely. He did literally everything he could to see to it that she no longer existed as a person. I think that's why he sees Vi as a threat. She could have, initially, pulled Powder out of her delusion, and Silco was having none of that, because he views Powder as weak and imperfect. Hence the "Wake up, Powder" scene. And all the scenes where Silco literally tells Jinx to kill her mentally, as well as the bridge scene, where, from what I could tell, in those last moments, Powder, not Jinx, tried to kill herself with Ekko.
That's what I noticed, anyway, which gives me the impression that Silco legitimately tried to be a good father, but only to the daughter he believed he created, which made him a bad father.
@@garrusvakarian5326 I totally agree with you about Silco not giving a shit about Powder. This is why it really bothers me when people say things like "Silco is the only person who accepts her for who she is" while villainizing Vi as the one who doesn't accept her sister. I think Vi does accept Jinx, it's the murder and the violence she doesn't accept. Silco on the other hand, in no way "accepts her for who she is" because Powder is as much a part of her as Jinx is and we've been shown time and time again that he does not accept Powder and is trying to "kill her." This could be because he views her as weak like you said. I also think it could be because of the possessive nature of his love for Jinx. Powder was Vander's daughter, she's Vi's sister, she had all these people in her life that he was not a part of, so I think him trying to "kill" Powder is him trying to erase that part of her that didn't belong to him. His whole relationship with Jinx is built on "I'm all you have and you're all I have" which is also exemplified by the way he isolated her and made her reliant on him and only him. I think this was his way of making sure she'd never leave him.
Ultimately I think what really made him a bad father was that he never actually prioritized her wants and needs, like he operates on the mindset of "I want her to be like me", "I want her to trust me", "I don't want to lose her." He pretty much centers his own feelings in regards to their relationship and never actually puts her well being first.
Silco wasn't just using Jinx, he treated her how he would a daughter, he loved her. But that's where the positives end unfortunately. He did think that Vi abandoned Powder, which is why he took pity on her, but he blatantly refused to look at evidence to the contrary. Why? Because he was desperate for Jinx's companionship, he wants someone he can help in the way that he needed help after Vander betrayed him. So when Vi insists that she wants to help Jinx, he tries to get rid of her and doesn't want Jinx to know. Because Jinx's happiness would mean his loss. So yeah, he cared about Jinx a lot, but he would rather her happiness be gone forever than lose her as his daughter.
Silco is ultimately selfish and broken, and caring as well. He's a villain, but one we can understand and empathize with. One that we know is wrong and awful for Jinx, but one we can't help but dislike either.
@@ohood1788 I agree with what both of you said almost entirely but I think it's pretty important to note that Vi is doing the exact same thing as Silco is the opposite way round. Treating Jinx as if her and Powder are separate people where she essentially needs to "rescue" the latter from deep inside Jinx, both of them have an ideal of who she should be and each of their ideals is very fundamentally tied to their own emotional and mental baggage and biases. Despite this I think both have good intentions but still, neither accept her for who she is, a combination of both her child and adult self and accumulation of all her experiences and thoughts not just the pre or post Vander's death ones.
This is why I agree particularly with the idea its misguided to say "Silco accepts Jinx for who she is" because I firmly believe no one, including both her sister and her father does this and it's exactly what Jinx needs most in her life either from a friend or a partner, someone who sees Jinx and Powder as two sides of the same coin and can simultaneously stop her from going to far and push her to go far enough when she doesnt feel strong enough to. Ekko being the most likely candidate for this down the road but someone not yet in the show could also work.
(and then a tiny note silco did put Jinx's well being first in some ways, making a albeit misguided attempt to help her overcome the past, educating/providing her enough resources that her experiments started to work, teaching her to fight when she was too scared to do so as a kid, these are all grey areas in their value and purpose but they're still worth noting as things that he did that Vi didnt or couldnt do)
Honestly even if the story was garbage I’d watch this show for the animation alone, every frame was a work of art

THIS. I was watching the first 3 episodes knowing nothing about the fandom or story, so when they died I was just stuck staring at my screen in shock for like three minutes. I wish they got more love, especially since they were just kids when they were killed.
I miss Claggor but, not Mylo to be honest. Mylo always had something rude to say about Powder, which caused a lot of insecurity in her. I don't think he deserved to die - had he developed further I might have liked his character. Mylo was just a death where I was like: Meh. Claggor did upset me a bit though, he seemed sweet.

I was watching this thing and (yes Mylo was weirdly my comfort character idk why) they pointed out that Mylo wanted to make his mark on the world, which was why he was always so loud. when you watch ep1-3 back you see that everything he does from banging the ball on the wall while he's talking to Vi to painting the giant middle finger makes _noise_ because he doesn't want to be forgotten by humanity. and living as a torment to Jinx was not the way he likely wanted it, but he did live on after death. imo it was just a nice nuance to his character (I'm a writer so I love developed side characters). but it definitely didn't excuse his *sshole of an attitude to powder tho
I knew Vander would probably die as I'd pretty much figured out Powder was gonna be Jinx from the start, but those two? Yeah, that caught me off-guard too.

I think he has the right idea- however because he's just as worse off as Jinx in the mental illness category, he comforts the only way he knows how- and that spirals Jinx down the rabbit hole.
This is just all my opinion, however- I think Silco is such a complex character that he's not meant to be truly interpreted- at least not this early anyway.

I don't particularly hate it myself- I think in this case it's not THAT big of a deal due to circumstances of the show- however, I've seen some people start to idolize Silco's parenting skills and wish he could be their dad- (not that this is Riot's fault- it IS NOT). Honestly, I love the show probably even more than the biggest stan- I play league so I can appreciate character lore more, but when fictional characters who are seriously mentally damaged start to become parts of people's lives I think that presents a huge issue.

To be fair, I can’t stand both of them lol. To me Jayce feels bland, and Mel is just... annoying. But I feel like Jayce’s character starts taking shape during season two, I have a feeling that’s when he develops into his League of Legends self, which would be so interesting to witness.
She isn't only just using him she did like him too genuinely, also remember Jayce is his own character he doesn't have to listen to her and near the end he started to have his own mind. He had Hamerdinger (I think that's how you spell it) telling him what was right to do but he chose to listen to the council. It wasn't only Mel.

Honestly, Jayce was very very selfless. No other council member would jump right into battle and risk his life with no armor to shut down a factory. All the other council members hid behind armies. How tf is he selfish? Everything he did was for the city or for Viktor.

On one hand Silco is a really complex character and an amazing villain in a story that doesn't really have a typical villain vs hero thing, it just goes to show how much care was put into the story and the characters.

I adore him as a character for how well written he is as a truly flawed person due to his own trauma, and I loved how deeply he loved jinx but how it was clear how incapable he was as a father to her because of his own issues. The Silco conversation is something I’ve seen replayed in a lot of comment threads. Frankly this is a compliment to the writing of the show and the character, as the portrayal earned some powerful responses from viewers.
As a past League Player, seeing all the Champion reveals were so fun. Seeing what happened to them and how they became what they are was fascinating
The characters had depth, I understood the actions of all of them.
Also. Since ACTUALLY caring about Jinx was a pleasant surprise. I was waiting for the "Noone ever loved you. You are to broken. Everyone you ever loved manipulated you" kinda thing for Jinx

I was pleasantly surprised the Silco did love Jinx. I figured the show had to have the breaking point moment when Vi does something which completely breaks Jinx (and Silco's love turn out to be fake). Still doesn't mean Silco was a good dad nor was he a good influence on her (I mean her entire fall to madness was because she still has never forgiven herself that night and Silco's influence definitely didn't help with that trauma)

There's nothing really redeeming about Silco's love for Jinx. It's thoroughly twisted and mostly self-centered. It also makes for a great story and an interesting character.

Just the other day I had a discussion with a bloke about how we see this whole inner conflict within Jinx which was fueled by the "love" of both Vi and Silco. Vi loved Powder and didn't accept Jinx as who she truly was wanting her to remember who she was in the past (and face her inner demons) while Silco loved Jinx and only saw Powder as who Jinx WAS and though that part of her was the exact same as the weakness he once saw in himself (his whole obsession with drowning/the baptism scene)

Jinx is definitely my favorite character, she has been in league since she came out. While I played and liked Vi and Cait too, I freaking also love them both now. I’d be happy either way if they just become the best of friends or if it’s a romantic relationship. They have a great dynamic together. Vi is the real cupcake imo, she really does have a good heart like they say multiple times in the show. She lost her cool a couple times, but in any of those situations you can’t blame her, especially at the ages she was.
I’m in the “Silco is a 3-D guy” bandwagon, as he mirrors a lot of real world people capable of both good and evil. Unlike the leaders of Piltover, he was not completely indifferent to the problems of the city’s underbelly, but also not completely innocent in his methods for dealing with those problems. A man who, through cunning, careful manipulation, and a little bit of luck, worked his way up from the depths to become the most powerful man in the underworld of Zaun and strove tooth and nail for its independence, albeit at the expense of the physical and mental well-being of its citizens. His downfall would eventually come from within, but not before he and his main associate had cut a path of death and destruction through the heart of both sides of town

2:38 Small correction here. League of Legends is the legends character left behind, and the stories that were told about them, which became manifestations that fight on summoners rift.
Arcane is the actual story those characters had, and the lives they lived.
It's also why Viktor's story is so massively different from League of Legends lore. My main speculation is that Piltover tried to make Viktor look like the absolute villain, to justify their own cause and make themselves look like the hero. Something that has been done time and time again in history.
This is the first explanation I’ve heard for why all these characters are battling, so… thanks!

It feels like a fully open and honest relationship, especially since shes present for all his meetings above in the rafters, so jinx gets to hear EXACTLY what everyone thinks of her. Including Silco.
Silco is still a bad guy, without a doubt, and he definately wasnt the kind of person who should have raised a child, especially a traumatized one with other issues

Silco manipulated Jinx into something he could turn people on he just ended up actually loving her like a daughter which he never expected. Hence why at the end he finally understands why Vander did what he did.
I feel like everyone in this reply section has a very different interpretation of their dynamic.
TB Skyen has a wonderful video where he breaks down the animation of Arcane act 1, and in particular he talks about the scene where Silco takes Powder in. Simply looking at the animation for longer than a second reveals that he wasn’t taking her in to use her as a tool, but because he connected with her in a way he never thought he would.
Silco is not a good person, and his parenting method is questionable, but he obviously cares about her, tells her what he believes to be the truth, and was willing to give up what he’d spent his entire life fighting for, to keep her safe.

Damn I seem to never be able to escape from League. I started in ~2012 and stopped in 2014. Came back in 2015 and played until 2018 (god knows how many hours i put in during this time), stopped again and my friends brought me back in 2019 for a short period of time where I stopped again but then in 2020 a different group of friends brought me back (they started playing). Then when they started hating league and refused to play it anymore then Arcane comes out and now I just can't get away. I already installed LoR on my phone, grinded to plat in TFT, and have been extremely tempted to start my ranked grind in LoL again (highest I got was Plat back in 2018)....

When Viktor said to Jayce about not going on stage and being "in front of them" I thought he meant he was in a relationship with Jayce but didn't want to go public yet. I wasn't even shipping them, I just thought that they were being set up as a thing. Plus ViCait was so sapphic that it wasn't really out there to think. Right up until the JayMel kiss I genuinely didn't even know it was a ship -_- I thought they were friends and not even super close
personally i'm disgusted by the fact that Mel hooked up with Jayce. She's a girlboss and doesn't need any men (but she could be with any woman of the council, i would be ok with that
(especially Cait's mom, fight me))
While shipping them is definitely an option it works better for the story that Jayce and Viktor have a bromance rather than a romance. The fact that Jayce very specifically says they're like brothers in a series where one of the driving themes is how family can hurt each other while still loving each other is pretty important imo.

Aren't we going to ignore the fact that Mel was the one who gave Jayce and Victor a chance in the first place when it comes to official council approval. Her body language was there as well as her dialogue with Jayce. She said in episode 4 "The only one worth my time is him" while this can be a business thing it's not completely out of the blue that they hooked up honestly. It might've caught you of guard at first but then when you watch it again and consider they've known each other for *years* I'm not sure it's completely fair to them. I'm confused why people hate Mel for just liking Jayce and that it gets in the way of their ship. We get what we get and regardless there will be Victor + Jayce fanart and fanfic regardless.

i am both a "silco is complex" and a "silco no" person. i can acknowledge that he's a fantastically written villain and a complex character, however that doesn't not stop me from hating every fiber of his being and cheering at his death (although i was sad for Jinx).
Right? I recognize he's complicated and did love Jinx in his own twisted way, but I think him dying was the best outcome.

One of the things I love about this show is how even when I hate a plot point, I can still understand it happens for a reason. It makes sense that the story would progress that way and the characters would behave in a certain manner. I think that's what hurts the most.

With Balance Unlimited it's like the fanbase came to simp then left the moment season 1 was done and Great Pretender is still not discussed nearly as much as it should be considering it was one of the best non shounen shows to come out last year
