What does ‘Hands Free Driving’ even mean?

  • Thank you Ford for sponsoring this video! Today we are taking a brand-new Ford Mustang Mach-E® SUV for a drive... without using our hands! BlueCruise uses externally facing sensors and a driver-facing camera, as well as a GPS database to determine if you can drive hands free. The Ford BlueCruise Level 2 Advanced drivers assistant is impressive. I’ve gone more than 30 minutes without ever touching the steering wheel! Obviously, I'm still in charge of the vehicle, and I'm still paying attention to my surroundings and the road in-front of me.

As for the Tesla comparison: since the system warns you when you take your eyes off the road, it makes no difference to rest your hands, which you keep in the air the whole time, lightly on the steering wheel. The result is the same, except that you don't have tired arms.
Also, it only works on the highway, where the steering wheel only moves a few degrees, which is a huge difference.
Furthermore, a Tesla also now monitors the eyes, which means that interaction with the steering wheel could theoretically be switched off. But this additional safety feature is more due to Tesla's pioneering work in self-driving and the resulting earlier NTSHA requirements.

Just like everyone else is saying about the timing of your Tweet & this video. It's nice that a "Level 2 system" is impressive when it's with Ford as your description says, but it's a massive problem when you name your system "FSD". Acting like Tesla didn't have it Hands Free at one point as well, as if it's not understandable as to why they would make it so you'd have to have your hands on the wheel. It just feels disingenuous. I have this question. If Tesla didn't bear the weight of introducing this technology, and pioneering the idea that self driving cars could be a thing, do you think the car you're driving right now with that "Hands Free" feature would be existent to this day? Tesla walked so other companies could run. I still believe the Tesla deserves a lot of credit for what they've done & arguing semantics on naming seems dumb. This feels more like a way for you to put down Tesla for being tied to Elon, rather then a genuine critique seeing as how many holes can be poked through your bias towards each self driving technology.

It’s definitely a joy to have, I travel about 71 miles one way for work. And 90 percent of that drive most days is blue cruise, it does a pretty good job staying in the lane and not bouncing around. But what it does that have me nervous at times, it’s when we’re taking a curve it’s keeping the same speed instead of slowing down. It’s been said, there’s anew software update coming, so change lanes, slowing down and moving over etc. I have a 2022 Mach-E and haven’t received it, can’t wait till I do. And of course when they share these experiences on the internet they get the typical internet answer of "well its still youre fault it says you need to be ready to take control at any moment". So basically it almost always works, but it can AND MIGHT randomly try to kill you at any moment, and if it succeeds its your fault. Why would anyone want to use it then? Having to be ready to narrowly evade death at any moment is more stressful then just driving

I allowed the trial to expire on Blue Cruise on my MME only because I primarily do city driving. I did use it for some hour drives and it's definitely a fatigue easing tool for interstate driving. This is especially true for when you come up to congestion. The Adaptive cruise does a good job of relieving the driver of having to maintain spacing and yes, the lane change is great to have. If I were commuting on a freeway or interstate, it would be a huge stress saver.
