The biggest slowdown for Wintersun has always been the fact that this is essentially a solo project for Jari. Kai helped on drums for the self titled album, Time I and II, and others did some backing vocals for Time and The Forest Season. Other than that, the writing, orchestrations, recording of all instruments and vocals, mixing and mastering is all 100% Jari. He also writes multiple albums at the same time, and probably suffers from some severe bouts of writers block. I think if you look at the current Indegogo campaign, he's earned back a lot of good will from fans with the amount of stuff you get for the money. $50 gets you 8 albums. The 5 demo albums probably are a mixed bag of great music and more unrefined stuff, but the value proposition is definitely there. EDIT: Oh, and the new album is dropping August 30th. There are a lot of great live concert versions of a lot of songs. If you want to watch some of those, they're pretty great. If you like blast beats, the self titled album has a TON of them. Try some of these songs: Winter Madness (one of the best solo's ever written) Battle against time (amazing song) The Way of The Fire (Time II song they've played live)
It's just Jari, in his apartment, alone, making the very specific music he wants. He literally writes the music for every instrument, and it will only become available when it sounds precisely how he wants. The other members only have some input once in a while, probably mostly Kai with the drumming. It will take as long as it will take.
"fun" fact, Jari is missing 1/4 of his lung from a disease he had while serving in the army, yet he manages to produce such amazing vocals. He actually reecently dropped playing guitar while touring to focus on his breathing / singing.
Someone had mentioned that in the comments. That is crazy!!! I would be able to do anything if I were missing part of a lung. I have mad respect for that. Thank you for sharing and for watching.

Greetings from Helsinki, Finland. Hometown of Wintersun. I was that drummer Kai "human metronome" Hahto "Alone" gig couple months ago. it was gig where he plays drums alone with tapes of all his years in music. Many different bands. Wintersun, Nightwish, Swallow The Sun, etc. It was his 50 years birthday celebration gig. You can find videos here in UA-cam. Enjoy and stay heavy!
This song is on the "Time I" album. The Time II album, their 4th, is currently scheduled for release on August 30 this year. 2004, 2012, and 2017 for the first 3 albums. Singer and band mastermind, Jari Maenpaa was previously in Ensiferum. Since 2016, he no longer plays guitar live. "That drummer" is Kai Hahto, he and bassist Jukka Koskinen are now in Nightwish. guitarist Teemu Mantysaari was asked to play guitar for the Megadeth tour, last Sep, he became permanent in November. Jari , during his compulsory military service, contracted Tuberculosis, and as a result , lost part of a lung. The album title track and "Land of Snow and Sorrow" were also played here in this rehearsal session at Sonic Pump studios.
This song is really epic. Many has described as wall of sound. For me Wintersun was the band I also learn to really appreciate fry scream and growling. I hope you continue with song Time from same rehearsals. 🙏🏼😎✌🏼
Wintersun is the only band ive seen play perfectly live. Even the other greats ive seen have had a bit of slop or a mistake here or there, but not these guys. It was crazy. They've stayed in my Mount Rushmore of bands ever since the debut album and I don't know if anything will ever knock them off. As others have suggested, do the song Time from the same studio session. It's arguably better.
Welcome Matt to the self help group that is called "people who like Wintersun". You are coming at a good time since the album whose drums have been recorded when I was in 9th grade is finally coming out. I discovered this band a bit accidentally back in 2008 (I think) and at that point people were already complaining about "Time" being delayed. The joke "at least Jari didn't name the next album Infinity" was already old. Boy, little did we know 😂 It's easy to be frustrated at the guy. And also super hard, because the music is incredible. When it comes. My only "complaint" is that the bass comes across as somewhat buried, but I suppose that something has to give when you have layers upon layers upon layers of orchestrations, guitar acrobatics and Kai's amazing drumming. I'd still like to hear poor Jukka better, I know his work from his Norther days and he's really good! My recommendation would be to listen to the whole first album, it's legendary.
lol, is there a secret handshake for the Wintersun club? I will definitely check out their discography, but I will probably react to a few more older songs before I do a deep dive. Thank you for the insight.
@@MattsMoshPit1 In that case, try "Battle against time", it's one of the earlier ones and can be heard on that debut album. Lol I dunno anything about a handshake, maybe someone else does. Or I can invent one 😂
Sons of Winter and Stars is the "this is what we can do" song. Time is a great song, but it's a bit repetitive compared to this one. They don't have a bad song in their entire discography though.
@@pbmdh Time is completely different from this one, and has amazing middle section of the song, when band is layering notes plus adding great vocal work from Jari and ending guitars solo..
@@PBWaWa Oh for sure. Trust me, I absolutely LOVE Time as well. I just thing Sons of Winter and Stars is their pinnacle song (that is until "The Way of The Fire" comes out!)

That was more or less my reaction also :D I'm a huge metalhead, and when I discovered Wintersun I just couldn't stop smiling. Thinking I could live my life without listening to them makes me anxious XD
A new mix and master of Time I album will be included in the Time Package which releases in August 30th. It is called Time I 2.0 and it's a massively improved version so if you're looking forward to react to more songs from Time I (and Time II [which you definitely must not miss]), wait until August 30th.
@@MattsMoshPit1 checking out the 2017 remaster of the debut album, Wintersun 2.0 would be a good starting point. It's older stuff, but still fantastic. You might enjoy the live rehearsal of the songs "Time" and "Land of Snow and Sorrow", but the upcoming new mix and master of these songs will be much heavier and meatier (while not compromising highly detailed orchestrations etc.) thanks to modern plug-in technology Jari is now using. Time II will also absolutely blow your mind :) I wish it was August 30th already. It will be life-changing
@@MattsMoshPit1 you're welcome :) I couldn't be more excited for Time II. Not Wintersun related but I was wondering if you know Make Them Suffer? I think you might like them if you don't know them yet. They're an Australian metalcore band, recently joined by a kick-ass female keyboardist/vocalist Alex Reade (ex-Drown This City). They just dropped a sick new single titled Epitaph today. I've been loving all the new singles with Alex in the band (and also with their previous key player/female vocalist Booka but these new ones are on another level). They have basically won the lottery with Alex. She's such a great addition to the band, fans love her and the guys are giving her more space than ever before. The main vocalist Sean is sick as well and I think they have a really refreshing, unique sound and vibe that separates them from the rest of the metalcore bands. Would love to know your opinion.
I would’t call this a supergroup, Kai, Teemu and Jukka was in Wintersun for years befor joining Nightwish/Megadeth and Jari left Ensiferum 2004. I think that some of the frustration with the album taking this long stems from the band using crowdfunding to finance it. I think the first crowdfunding campaign was back in 2017, people that contributed probably did’t expect to have to wait seven years for the album.
Thank you for the insight. It’s interesting how they are using crowdfunding. On one end you have more freedom in what you put out, but it can really upset your fanbase. I hope it pays off for them.
The Forest seasons crowdfunding wasn't at all to produce Time II. They have explained a couple times already that calling it a 'crowdfunding' campaign was a bad idea. You preordered a digital album, and they hoped to use the money gained to build a new studio. Super poorly executed by Jari no doubt, but people attached so much of what they 'thought' would happen without actually reading what was happening. You were buying an album, they would use the money gained, it was never a promise to give people another album later.
