One of my favorite guitar players of all time! Beyond the speed, beyond the vibrato, bending and fluidity, the thing that always made me a huge fan is Marty's sense of individuality. At times in this clip, he plays a number of fairly stock, music-store classic patterns (the Yngwie-centric minor third lick across the first three strings for example), but he never sounds like anyone else. There are very, very few players that I've ever come across who were so fiercely themselves while playing. His tone only serves to emphasize this. It's about as bare and lean as it gets. I don't even think that there's reverb. Gear wise, it's hyper-generic. A gibson style guitar with humbuckers into a high gain amp. And it serves a point. He sounds unique solely because of what his hands are doing. His melody lines don't just anticipate the next change, but the changes to come up to each cadence. The more technical licks are usually flourish and embellishment to support and propel a greater melody. They're there to tell a part of the story that he's relaying to us. He uses an unconventional stance with his right hand. His wrist is almost parallel to his pick at the string. Must be part of his amazing sound.
Amagi goe is 天城越え in Japanese. This song genre is Enka. Enka is a traditional Japanese soul music about love and melancholy. Anyway, Great playing Marty!!
+obey anonymous Enka is awesome, I discovered the genre by listening to the first Tokyo Jukebox. The subjects remind me a bit of Finnish folk music, which are also very melancholic and "longing".
I love how Marty always puts all his emotion into every song(recording or live). I saw him in Vegas a few months ago and there were only maybe 100 people or less and he put the balls to the wall for everyone! He is truly amazing!
Who says metal players can't have soul? That is soulful playing at it's finest. Marty's bands and vibrato are second to none and only Vai is as creative with them. I won't even entertain anyone saying anything negative about this man he is a guitar legend pure and simple. This is how it's done.
+Valentin Toupar Marty influence Uli jon roth (Classical only without uli hendrix influence? ) best kept secret A touch of Hendrix could be as terrifying as shawn lane.. Not to mention satrionie and steve vai both say Hendrix influenza above before all
In my opinion the best guitarist in the world, so much finesse emotion technique and control overall, Marty never stop making music please no one in the world can play like you do
Love this guys playing, definitely took a lot of influence from him. Love how he turns what could be a simple melodic phrase into something very unique by the way he 1/2 step bends into a diatonic note from an odd note and frequently plays a slightly 'out' phrase but resolves it perfectly so it creates a great feel of tension. Truly one of the most interesting guitarists of modern times
+Slicklickz Schenker was also known to move the Wah pedal very slowly throughout a solo, to get a tone that progressed in effect. He's really a scion of guitar playing.
vow, this wasn't just some technically difficult crap like so many other pieces out there; this was beautiful, soulful, full of emotions. thank you so much
The Reaper Someone told them they'd actually find a gundam over there. Now that I think about it, I think they built a pretty large Gundam statue in Japan. I remember reading something like that. lol
+Zed Chuva It looks like scalloped, but I don't think it is. It's a modded guitar, the marks look like that because the fret markers that used to be there are actually removed. At least that what it looks like to me, like they just removed the original markings.
Mike Doolittle And Marty hates to be called a shredder ... :P Beside of that I‘ve never heard a guitarist with that kind of feeling in his style. It‘s unique. It‘s outstanding.
I'm guessing people like the OP like to attend parties they're not invited to just to complain. That or the people who make these comments that shoot down the opinions of others, regardless of how wrong they are, are miserable Liberals.
yes............. MARTY IN THE STATES AGAIN RECORDING FOR EMGS! glad i caught this! Marty's playing style is my favorite, I always know when it's him on guitar.
The master of semi tone bends, also those pre-bend then back down and back up again, I struggle more with those than anything else in the history of the guitar
Damn!!!! That was mega kickaxe!!! He shreds like a beast but the great thing about Marty is it is not just for the sake of shredding...there is a continuity and soul to his tunage. Off the charts - smokin hot!!!!! Killer licks - runs!! WOWzzaaaa!!!!
The one and only Marty Friedman. Within first 5 seconds i am able to recognize that it is him by his eclectic playing. And yes, that is fucking beautiful guitar.
Marty managed to impart the emotion of the song into his guitar. Yes, the song is performed with agony in its tone. Someone here said, "The guitar is crying." Heck yeah, because that's how "Amagi Goe" is.
I know this guitar was burned or something, but it's beautiful! It has so much character! I want it! Ohh and Marty shredds! One of my favorite guitar players and one of my biggest inspirations.
What's great about Marty is him standing up strong for instrumental guitar muzak. I'm guessing that pedal is a Maxon AF9. Delay is from the desk, then.
+epicSuperActionHero wasn't watching the video, then one moment i thought i heard whammy bar useage but thought to myself ' isn't it a fixed bridge he was using. so i looked to the video and right enough, no whammy bar. just awesome vibrato! :D
This guy is pure genius, the bending control is just insane.
Man those bends and vibratos are orgasmic....

+obey anonymous Smarter every day..

ENKA METAL??? Lol omfg.... and it sounds win, too!
SATCHEEEL!
I love how Marty always puts all his emotion into every song(recording or live). I saw him in Vegas a few months ago and there were only maybe 100 people or less and he put the balls to the wall for everyone! He is truly amazing!

This seriously reminded me a lot of the 'Tornado of souls' solo, especially that vibrato.
+Rimfeldt It's just his distinct style, that's why I love Marty
+Rimfeldt its in the same key, and marty is playing..that might be why
+Valentin Toupar Marty influence Uli jon roth (Classical only without uli hendrix influence? ) best kept secret A touch of Hendrix could be as terrifying as shawn lane.. Not to mention satrionie and steve vai both say Hendrix influenza above before all
Paulo Figueiredo just like your mom :3
You can hear that vibrato in all his solos :D
So much hate on the comments... it's Marty fucking Friedman. Some respect for that awesome awesome guitar player.
Marcelo Daniel Tello if they were shown only the audio and told it was a teenager...
In my opinion the best guitarist in the world, so much finesse emotion technique and control overall, Marty never stop making music please no one in the world can play like you do
Absolutly amazing. These pick ups are outstanding. His pants are also outstanding.
Love this guys playing, definitely took a lot of influence from him. Truly one of the most interesting guitarists of modern times
he gave that pitch vibrato... pitches love vibrato
The tone reminds me of turning on a wah and not moving it, leaving it close to the heel down position.
+CrazyBadCuber He actually uses and autowah pedal with all the settings lowered to 0 to give a little bit more of a vocal sound to his playing.
+CrazyBadCuber Micheal Schenker guitar tone trick circa 1974.
+Slicklickz Schenker was also known to move the Wah pedal very slowly throughout a solo, to get a tone that progressed in effect. He's really a scion of guitar playing.
+MrNeosantana I saw him live with UFO in 1975.
CBC! Never thought I'd see you here, of all places! You're a friedman fan?
flawless playing, amazing control and creativity, Marty will always be one of my all time favourites
3:00 was when i remembered that he used to play in cacophony with jason becker, and he's still got it.
Liked the whole thing, Marty Friedman is an amazing musician. I have to say that last part of the song was just too good for this world.
That riff / theme from "Elixir" at 1:28 is pure, unfiltered greatness.
So glad they mentioned Jason Becker in the description.
I love the sound. I think he is one of a few guitars that you can identify his sound and tone as unique.
Richard Trevino one note and bend is enough
cant stop listening to this...amazing
didnt like it much when i first listened to it but it gets much better everytime you listen to it
My mind was just blown! Thank you metal much.
vow, this wasn't just some technically difficult crap like so many other pieces out there; this was beautiful, soulful, full of emotions. thank you so much
Great song, good tone, and cool visual concept for a guitar. Marty never fails to amaze in his unique creativity!
Marty has gone full japanese, even in his progressions.
+ApolloSol That's quite funny considering this is a rendition of Japanese enka song.
BETAsin Well he does live in Japan. It's all really rubbed off on him.
+ApolloSol hE's been into japanese stuff forever. He's just managed to find his place in it that's all.
The Reaper Someone told them they'd actually find a gundam over there.
Now that I think about it, I think they built a pretty large Gundam statue in Japan. I remember reading something like that. lol
+The Reaper And Michael Starr!
That's one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen
Set yours on fire and you too can have that guitar!
Am I seeing things, or does he have the "marked" frets scalloped? 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 sure look like it.
+Zed Chuva Surely looks like it, sir.
No, those are scalloped frets.
Scalloping a Gibson neck still isn't as bad as putting EMGs in it tho. #burn
+Zed Chuva Yeah, best thing would be throwing it in the trash can.
+Zed Chuva It looks like scalloped, but I don't think it is. It's a modded guitar, the marks look like that because the fret markers that used to be there are actually removed. At least that what it looks like to me, like they just removed the original markings.
Quite possibly the best guitar performance of all time!!
wow totally amazing. best guitar I have heard in years. a rare example of creative and expressive shredding
one of the most unique players, one of my favourite guitarists.
Watching his picking hand hurts my wrist
his playing is breath taking
This was amazing, dude! I am insane with this sound 😍
Killer phrasing and vibrato....Friedman is always thinking outside the box.
addictive combination of tone and techniques
Marty writes and plays beautifully!
Marty again proves that u dont need a wammy bar to express your note magically.
So much love in it. Thats so great \m/
THIS VIDEO IS MY 3rd FAVORITE ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEO~EVER~ON UA-cam!!!!!!!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Bruhhhhhhhhh. That was fantastic! Glad to see a Marty playthrough on here.
"This is just shred wankery, no feeling."
Thought I'd get that out of the way for all the ignorant trolls who can't appreciate a master of his craft.
Mike Doolittle And Marty hates to be called a shredder ... :P
Beside of that I‘ve never heard a guitarist with that kind of feeling in his style. It‘s unique. It‘s outstanding.
Amen brother!! Marty is the man!!🤘☢🤘
I'm guessing people like the OP like to attend parties they're not invited to just to complain. That or the people who make these comments that shoot down the opinions of others, regardless of how wrong they are, are miserable Liberals.
yes............. MARTY IN THE STATES AGAIN RECORDING FOR EMGS! glad i caught this!
Marty's playing style is my favorite, I always know when it's him on guitar.
how the hell he is not aging even a bit, no hair loss too
It's the Japanese lifestyle that's giving him strength!!!
In all honesty, I believe that he actually does have one or two bald spots. You just have to search for them.
reyhan mp he's a vampire
Elf.
He passes his age to the guitar ahah
Marty Friedman is an insane guitar player, for sure! His phrases are so exotic, so strange, just like that guitar! So strange but so cool!
those bendings just give me friggin chills! amazing !
wow, I like that style so very much. It has many odd but very amazing harmonies. I really want more of this.
amazing playing! dont know how many guitar strings this guy must have broken to reach to this height..respect ..
That guitar colour is cool. love it.
The master of semi tone bends, also those pre-bend then back down and back up again, I struggle more with those than anything else in the history of the guitar
Just practice slowly and by tomorrow you'll be a beast
he should make more of this kind of videos..a lot..entertaning and unpredictable
Such an instantly recognizable style. Also love the inlays only 3 looks cool.
Omg Marty Friedman on EMG Tv :D
Damn!!!! That was mega kickaxe!!! He shreds like a beast but the great thing about Marty is it is not just for the sake of shredding...there is a continuity and soul to his tunage. Off the charts - smokin hot!!!!! Killer licks - runs!! WOWzzaaaa!!!!
Always great to hear marty play PERIOD!!
When you hear him doing bends and vibrato its like anchor on your neck dragging you down in deep feelings....
even after all these years Marty is still smokin'.................
The best imo. The way he puts phrases together is the best.
Reminds me of Mute City from F-Zero!!
Kick-ass playing as always, Marty!!
The one and only Marty Friedman. Within first 5 seconds i am able to recognize that it is him by his eclectic playing. And yes, that is fucking beautiful guitar.
I want that guitar
The style is very especial!
Gonna watch Marty for the first time on Tuesday at Oakland!
marty friedman surely has advanced completely, he has grown unbelievably
Marty is a cool guitar dude
inconfundible sound! Marty excellent as always.
Marty is totally different from other guitar player...vibrato bending solo ideas
Marty managed to impart the emotion of the song into his guitar. Yes, the song is performed with agony in its tone. Someone here said, "The guitar is crying." Heck yeah, because that's how "Amagi Goe" is.
Master of melodies.
That is awesome! Loving his playing.
Supreme sound and playing technique hands down! Even if it looks like the guitar was buried in a swamp and got torched as soon it is was uncovered :D
I know this guitar was burned or something, but it's beautiful! It has so much character! I want it!
Ohh and Marty shredds! One of my favorite guitar players and one of my biggest inspirations.
That picking hand though 🧐🧐🧐 👍👍👍👍
Japanese legend has it that Yngwie used tools to scallop fingerboards but Marty used his fingers during practise...
Marty Is The God of shred, and vibrato man, no one does it like Marty an incredible guitarist.
Great !! Thanks EMGTV !!!
2:58 OMG!!!!!!! Those 20 seconds that come after.... just wow!!!!!
love your picking style
What's great about Marty is him standing up strong for instrumental guitar muzak.
I'm guessing that pedal is a Maxon AF9. Delay is from the desk, then.
can't wait for the new album next summer
His pick hand trips me out how he plays, I love that guitar no pretty shine looks like an old rusty car from a junkyard. Marty is awesome
Those perfect bends
gibson tetanus
how cool is it, he is wearing a danko jones shirt! beside the fact of his awesome guitar playing skills and everything.
00:54...I love that note
thats so beautyful banding from The Maestro..
yeah finally Friedman on EMGTV
he's playing some parts of the scenes' album, fits great with heavy background.
Best Otaku ever.
Kidding, you're amazing man!
Sick as always! That old ass guitar has some miles on it and it sounds great!!
Excellently clean play!
his vibrato sounds soooo perfect *__*
almost like a whammy bar but.... more awesome and without whammy bar *__*
+epicSuperActionHero wasn't watching the video, then one moment i thought i heard whammy bar useage but thought to myself ' isn't it a fixed bridge he was using. so i looked to the video and right enough, no whammy bar. just awesome vibrato! :D
He did mention the usage of auto wah pedal with knob set to 0 to give the lead a vocal like voicing.
probably the best lead guitarist. some guitarist just play fast. this guy plays melodically
I'm proud of you this is a mix up love what you do awsome
oh gosh ! this is absolutely amazing !
Oh my, the feels, the shakes, the circle picks, the rising need to listen to Rust in Peace really fucking loud a hundred times in a row.........
Just realized he’s the Jeff Beck of metal.
I like the original version
But this is another level
This is not about emg so This is not emg TV, This is just Marty Friedman TV.
Marty 4ever.............BRAVO👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
He is the only person on the planet who can sound good with that picking technique. Just how he built his instantly recognizable style is beyond me.
I imagine Marty & Steve playing A VERY SPECIAL SONG.
I'm not liking this to much but I'm sure someone out there will enjoy it. I'll give it a better listen later and maybe i will like it more then.
We need more people with your attitude :)
Sovereign King JellyBOMB
Thank you! And will do!
+Davarious Jackson Wow. I am a bit jealous - you've got your first listening of Rust in Peace ahead. Have fun. :)
+Nikita Karpaev It's like losing your virginity, but better.
+Sovereign King "Lucretia" also is one of the best solo ever
