I have one of those. They are normally used to locate equipment failure, since failing bearings and electrical resistance generate heat. As you pass by structures, you can often see your heat reflection on the surfaces. Because heat travels differently in a structure, it is often possible to see a structure's frame from the outside. When a train brakes, the wheels glow. The bearings glow when moving. In fact, that is how the detectors on railroads detect failing bearings. When air is released, the temperature in the lines decrease. I'm a member of a steam train association. I placed some of the infra-red photographs in our group's calendar. You have steam trains in Pennsylvania. Take some infrared photographs and see how the heat moves in the locomotives. When a train undergoes braking, other things happen.
This story fascinates me because my dad was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre and I never ever recall him mentioning this mine fire. Thank you for your content

A great new piece of equipment! This video showed “what lies beneath “. Without the gun you would never know the differences in temperature. A really good investment 😊
I was in this area with a friend who was from Uniontown and we visited several sites in the area. One was a mine fire which I want to say was south of the town where there was actual fire coming out of the ground in several places. When looking into the cracks in the earth it was white hot to the eye. Also plenty of trees were burned where hot gasses erupted. The second place we explored was a huge array of beehive ovens for making coke. There were maybe 75 in two rows. A very large area. Great exploring videos.
I think the addition of the thermal imaging gun is great. It provides the ability to see what is truly going on beneath the top layer of ground, and it gives a different perspective of the coal mine fire issue. The issues of the burning mines are far from done.
That was really cool to see the temperature differences in the different spots. I would love to see what you find around Centralia. Great tool for the things you do.
I think the thermal camera was a good investment. Very cool. A umbrella or some kind of shade to take the glare off the screen would have helped you. Very good video Stay safe and thank you for sharing
The infrared gun is a really cool visualization! Perhaps putting some sort of hood around the screen would reduce the glare? ( Kinda like the hoods that surround the review monitors during American football games.)
Very interesting video!! Cool new toy!! If you decide to do a meetup in March, I'll have to be there in spirit!! I'll definitely be watching!! I am learning so many new things from you!! Thank you!!
In the early sixty's this was the area where you could see the glow of the burning mountain at night as far as I can remember they flooded the mine shaft and said that the fire was out great video thanks JP
Hi Jay, I have an idea for a video for you, why not pitch a tent there over a warm area not far from the vent just to see how warm you would be in a tent in say late Fall or early Winter or indeed the first half of Spring. You could take temperature readings through the night and maybe use the new gun to try a ghost hunt in the area too or Bigfoot. Maybe if you were to get a really dark coloured umbrella you could shut out a lot of the glare, at least the area surrounding the target behind you would be darker so less glare. I think the gun is a fantastic investment, you can use it in so many ways. A really video showing way more hot spots than last time, the gun is definitely going to be a great asset. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💞
@@JPVideos81 last weekend my husband took a short walk behind the couple of pipes that are fenced in with the gates. But he didn't go in too far. We actually live in Laurel run part-time. We hope that you have your tentative meetup on a Saturday at Laurel run. We've been up here about 4 years now. We really had no idea what those pipes were for. I find this whole thing of the mine fire under Laurel run to be absolutely mind-blowing.
Well done! The thermal camera definitely finds hot spots. You are right, even though Centralia is pretty much dead in regards to steam and hot spots, the little known Laurel Run seems to have all the action. Keep up the great work!
All these Pictures that you have Snapped make the glare nonexistent. I will say the pictures an everything combined make all of this a sort of an awe experience Totally Amazing. Thanks JP for everything this was a cool hike.

Congratulations reaching 190k subs....that's Awesome ! ....💙👍 I agree the thermal gun seems to be a great addition to your investigation equipment . ....fascinating to see the beautiful colors of the hot zones and escaping steam . I wonder if the woodland creatures search out these warm spaces when the weather is bitter cold .. Thank you for another adventure ..Like I've said many times ..I always learn something in your videos . 💥 (A meet-up event would be so interesting ...wish I could attend .)
I’m not sure if it’s still burning but there was an active mine fire 🔥 on Sharp Mountain above the town of Palo Alto PA, outside of Pottsville. You could check with the Mine Bureau in Pottsville or maybe a viewer could chime in. It would be really productive to be able to attach a Infrared camera to your drone and survey the area, especially at night. Great investment you made there. You could use it to find the cold 🥶 air indicating mine air movement or also to find cool water springs feeding ponds etc.
That is a really cool tool. It's a great addition to the channel! Be great if looking for a spot to warm up or camp on. Find a warm spot then pitch a pup tent and put your coffee pot over a fissure. lol Can't wait to see more.
That sure is a neat piece of equipment and yes, I think it's a great investment for the channel! Makes this incredible history all the more interesting. How cool to see the temperature differences and the photos are amazing too. The mountain of ash and other hot spots are so fascinating, it's unbelievable to think that somewhere beneath them in close proximity, it is actually burning. The meetup sounds wonderful, wish I could be there, it would be so cool to see this in person, but I will enjoy your video of it. Really awesome informative video JP, thank you!

@@JPVideos81 no I don't have a car right now and when we were coming through it was like 5am. And they had been on stage all night. I was only on stage for a minute as Betty and was sat rest of the show. Nobody was in the right state to go stumbling though game land. However if and when you do have the meet up I will have no problem with getting there. It will be safer to see it that way in a group with you there cause you are familiar with the area up there.
Great video as always. They should put that heat energy to use. It would be great if they could somehow sink a giant metal coil tube to produce steam from the heat to run a generator. Or at the very least capture the heat for greenhouses to grow all winter. Place the greenhouse out of the bad air area but use the heat thru an exchanger. That there & Centralia is a massive amount of wasted energy. On the opposite end they should build data centers near old coal mines. Cheap land and a constant mid 50’s degree air plus tons of water. I sent that idea to Reading Anthracite but never heard anything.
Awesome!! I'm glad you invested in this. What a cool tool. Imagine if you had that thing when you thought you were being followed on one of your earlier videos. It would likely have picked up what/who ever might have been following/stalking you. I'd love to see you go back to Centralia with that. As you guys were going by the pipes, I was really curious about how many were still above ambient temps. I suggested just a simple digital thermometer, but you stepped it up a few notches. I think you'll likely find a number of cool surprises using it, for sure. We're under about a foot of snow where I live, until about late March. After 6 months of this, a guy might actually want to have a coal fire below... lol (seriously, a thermal vent would be kinda nice about now... ) Another great journey. I'm looking forward to seeing how many uses you can find for that imager. Cheers!
Thermal imaging gun is used in a lot of ways you’d never think! Like finding the exact location of a bee hive inside of a wall or animal in a wall/attic. Get or make a small hood for the temp gun. Like the ones FPV drone screens have. Will keep the screen in shadow and make the image visible to the camera you record with.
