- This is the 1st part of a 3000 mile scheduled maintenance on a 1949 Chevy 3100 pickup. Since I pulled it out of a barn & got it running I've put alittle over 31,000 miles on the truck and 9000 miles on the rebuilt 235 I replaced to old 216 with. I cover the oil change and the bypass oil filter element change in this episode.

An old schooler once Took a look at my original 1951 GMC 100-22 half ton extended bed pickup Truck He said This is when Truck's were Real Trucks!! And Don't ever get rid of it Well it's been 20 Year's later and he's since past on to the Lord 🙏 and I've never forgotten Those word's and you know what? I've still got my Truck and it hasn't missed a beat yet keep'em running 👍
Can't beat these old work horses. Good story Henry, Have a good 'un.
@@Volfandt You to my friend and Hey if you ever wake up one mourning and happen to see a 51gmc passing by your property be sure and flag us over and don't worry it'll just be me and The wife passing by and hoping to stop by and have a nice cup of coffee and shoot The gifts of gab with you👍
@@henrytyson3219 Sounds like a plan. See you then.👍
Well another fine instructional. I have a couple of questions:
One is would recommend installing a filter assembly like yours on a 1948 216ci engine which you know not it’s mileage.
Two, we have what we feel it’s not high bypass external oil filter assembly (previously on a 235 engine), the filter is Fram C4P and don’t know if it’s the correct filter? Any Ideas?
Three, the filter housing is dented and which we intend to repair (somehow?)
Thank you!
👍
Thanks again Dave .great job
Thanks 👍
Watching you work on your 49 makes me want to work on my customers 41 some more. I put on a new style screw on filter where the old style filter was. Unfortunately, my customer is very happy with what we built! Thanks Dave.
Hey Lee, glad to help, LOL. Carry on and have a good 'un.
Great video, gotta love a 235 six with dual carbs and split header, my 55 Chevy truck doesn’t have a filter , my 57 Chevy 210 does, I also use Rotella 15-40 in both of my 235 six cylinder motors , run it in my 20 Hp Kohler lawn tractor too, been real pleased with it.
Hey Steve, can we say like minds think alike? LOL.
I'm very happy with the 15w40.
Have a good 'un
And you probably didn't get dual carbs either when ordering the basic model... Lol.. Dave it's always a pleasure.. thx for bringing us along on another ride in the 49... Take care my friend...
Hey Gary. Well you gotta know that the hotroddrs back in the day did put twin Rochester B's (or equivalent Carters) on their circle track racers and cut up their single exhausts into duals. I've got a flyer from the 50's (somewhere around here) that advertises race cams for these old 235's. Give a gearhead an engine and he'll try to make it faster, LOL. Have a good 'un Gary 😁
@@Volfandt You 2 Dave... Looking forward to the next video...
What’s your opinion on adding some zinc additive to the oil. I just changed the oil in my 235 and running straight 40w. But I heard this old (original) motor needs as additional additive??
I went to Rotella 15w40 and am very happy with it.
Rotella also makes straight 30w & 40w and even tho it's rated "C" for diesel engines they used to carry an "S" rating because they were also spec'd for gasoline engines. Rotella dropped the "S" rating because the higher levels of ZDDP along with some other benefitial additives are not good for catalytic converters. Go with Rotella and you'll be fine.
Thanks for the little cruise through the countryside & for the info on the oil. I have a '40 Chevy Special Deluxe Sport Sedan with the 216 still in it. I'm in the process of re-assembling it after a period of about 30 years. I'm seeking advise/input on a recent issue. There is a copper pipe that runs oil from the oil distributor on the left side of the block, through the block via the water jacket, out on the other side of the block among the push rods, then up to the rocker arm shaft. I had to remove the old & install a new one. The trouble is that I'm having coolant leak from between the brass fittings & the pipe. A slow leak but after a while it adds up. Any ideas on what to use to plug the leak? I'm wondering if some JB Weld product might be useful? Or some kind of plumbers putty that would both plug the leak & withstand the heat of the engine. I appreciate any thoughts you have on the matter & I thank you for your time & consideration. Looking forward to the next videos for maintenance updates.
Hey Randall. I replaced that same line on my old 216 also. COngrats on tackling that job, it ain't easy..
If you didn't use teflon tape or pipe dope that is probably the problem. I used teflon tape on all the threaded fittings and didn't have any leaks.
As an FYI. some enterprising old timers back in the day would plug the block on both sides and run a 1/4" copper line outside the block around the back side, drill a hole in the side pan cover up close to the head and tie into the rocker shaft there. It ws a big fix for the later 235's where the block passages were blocked with crud (they don't use a copper through pipe like the 216) and couldn't clean it out. Again thats just an old fyi. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@Volfandt Thanks for the info. I like the old codger's way of sneaking around the back & coming in through the side door. I wish there were still a lot of the older guys around so I could tap into their old tricks. --- Anyhow, I used Mac's High Temp Red RTV Silicone Gasket Maker to cover the threads of the fittings for the copper pipe. My leakage isn't around the fittings & block, the leak is where the pipe comes through the fittings. I keep wondering why the pipe goes through the water jacket when there is space between the pipe & the fittings for water to seep through. Oh well, any suggestions for stopping the leak is appreciated. Have a good one! Semper Fi!
I can't remember if the fittings/lines used crush type sleeves or if they were flared but both are designed to seal against the line and not allow seepage. Perhaps the crush sleeve didn't seat right or the flaring may have a small bit of debris on it. I dunno. JB Weld may help if applied on the line where it seals in the fitting. Good luck Randall
@@Volfandt Thanks again for he input. I got the copper pipe & fittings in a kit from "The Filling Station" in Oregon. There wee only 2 ferrules for compression fittings & they went to the connections at the oil distributor & rocker arm shaft. I thought compression sleeves would be appropriate but just went with what was in the kit. I'll know better what to do next time. These companies that sell stuff should know what they're doing. --- By the way, I believe on a previous video you said you were in the USMC. You seem vaguely familiar. I was in from 1972 to 1976. Spent most time in 8th Comm BN, Force Troops, FMFLANT, Camp Lejeune. Also with 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU). Spent some time at 29 Palms too. Any connection?
@@randallsanders7446 SF Randall. I was an air winger 73-77. Spent most of my time in & out of MCAS Cherry Point & MCAS Beaufort. Only visited Camp Lejeune once to see a bud at the hospital. lso spent 13 long months at MCAS Futema with HMA 369 on Okinawa and was TAD to the USS FDR for a year with VMA 231.
Being single I took any and all TAD orders to get out of Cherry Point, LOL...
Carry On and have a good 'un Marine.
So you run 15/40 I was wondering about that. Okay thanks
It runs great. I haven't noticed any problems. No knocking, pinging etc. The gauge still pegs over 30 psi above idle, around 15 psi at idle and it also seems to turn over easier than with the straight 30w. I run the truck year round with no issues.
I need that gasket that you put on the cover. I can't find it anywhere. Where did you get yours ?
If you're talking about the O ring, it comes with the new oil filter. Check and make sure the old one is still on the top.
Another good, un, Dave, so do you run a deterrent oil , now that you are going to the 10w 40 was it, and what was the 30w
Thanks Mike. I've always used detergent oil in all my engines with the exception of the 2 strokers cause I dunno if they're oil is detergent or not, LOL...
@@Volfandt have a great weekend my friend, God bless
What's that big black hose coming out of the fire wall going towards the engine for
Thats the center "pop-up" vent drain hose. Normally it only goes as far as the valve cover but I extended it so it would drain past it. I get caught out in the rain every now & then...
Out of curiosity, have you ever tried the following Wix filter for your oil filter? Wix # 51006. I've been using this one for those old AC filters.
Hey Rob, yes I've used it before. They're basically the same size. Thanks for watching & commenting
