- This is a fabulous rendition, done by command performance, no less -- listen closely at 00:09 thru 00:11 secs as a patron screams out for ND! "The Juice" then pulls the sheet music from a folder, and waives it in the air like a banner, to the audience's evident delight, and then belts out this formidable rendition.
Bjorling is the greatest tenor who ever lived
Sveriges stolthet Jussi Björling!
The greatest tenor ever. He will never be eclipsed
A finer tenor never lived! He was a perfectionist technically, the expression and voice control superb. He was the master of his craft!
Totally agree. But the whole thing is, that he never understood how talented he was. Yes, he got the gigs and he worked around the world. There are very few talents that I am going to experience during my lifetime.
-Luciano Pavarotti
An unparalleled talent. No one comes close in tone, warmth, power and control in pianissimo, expression or technique.
@@ulfwiback8911 Yes, many of us are familiar with Pavarotti‘s appreciation of Jussi's abilities.
I agree but personally prefer Pavarotti's more modern impression. Due to different time it sounds more honest and raw - in a good way - to me.
Magnificent voice. One of, if not the greatest ever.
There never was any tenor with his timbre , Jussis voice was the must beautiful one , A diamond shining for ever.
Tenor voices are as unique as fingerprints and Bjorling's voice was certainly in a category with beautiful tenor voices along with Lanza Di Stefano, Wunderlich,Gigli, Pavarotti, De Muro Lomanto, Tagliavini, Caruso, Cortis, Aragall and perhaps young Carreras
@@sugarbist Corelli?
Lanza and Di Stefano are fake tenors
@@leonardodavinci2218 Why is Lanza and Di Stefano fake tenors?
@@leonardodavinci2218 Leonardo DaVinci would have had an answer already. Maybe you should change your name to “ I Don’t Know” I Have No Idea” Dr. Fauci, or I'm a '' FAKE POSTER''
Absolutely incredible voice.
There was only 1 Jussi and there will never be another.
I hear a true hero singing!!!!!
Puts enemies to tremble.
Bjorling the greatest!!!
Such a beautiful placed voice. Such economy of tone..no growling…pure sound with clean harmonics.
How well put. It is something extra.
Absolute magic... Jussi Bjorling was in a class all his own...💙💛
Without a doubt Paul
The greatest tenor ever lived!
Yes I agree with you. His voice is so refined, such versatility. He could use powerful vocals and sweetness in his scintillating voice.🇸🇪..
Caruso. Enrico Caruso was The Best. Compare the two.
@@c9380I did that and Björling came out as the better…
KING BJORLING was possibly drunk here and still nailed it, greatest Tenor then and to this day can’t be touched!
Bravo, no tenor today can equal this glorious voice

@Derek Juelz happy to help :)
Well, there are people paying money to see Paul Potts sing opera today. Doesn’t that make you cringe?
One of the best performance of this aria. Unbelievable breath control.
Abbassata di mezzo tono...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

and Mario Filippeschi ?
@@user-ff1cp5lt9n I stand corrected. His performance is amazing too. His is more epic, grand and soul stirring. Will change my comment to "one of the best." Never heard of him but thanks for letting me know about him.

What a glorious voice!
No tools to cheat available, this is how greatness sounds ladies and gentlemen. The best tenor to ever walk this earth.
Maybe caruso would not agree
I´m proud to be swedish !
But he sings a half note below the original score and his timbre is also, let's say, not really convincing...... no squillo.
Dear Qajjan, can't you enjoy a tenor voice without proclaiming a falsehood? What criteria are you using to qualify your statement, other than your personal opinion?

Bravo maestro bgiorling ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Absolutely fabulous, with a brilliantly animated Jussi singing with the usual thrill -- how I love to listen to his recordings, watch his movie and TV appearances on video. (notice the Black first violinist just behind him? That's liberal Sweden even in those days-- all best musicians accepted to the orchestra, disregarding creed and color, not like segregated 1950s America, even in the arts, back then!)
That audience member who shouted out his request for this aria probably always told the story of how Bjoerling heard him and graciously granted his request! Why not! But he usually sang this as one of his final encodes in recitals during this later part of his career.
As did Pavarotti!
I am a big fan of Jussi Björling!!!
🎶¡¡¡The best!!!🎶
Sooo beautiful... it hurts the soul and the heart and makes them fly. So exquisitely glorious.
A commanding performance. Bravo Jussi👏👏👏
My God, the raw power with such clarity, crispness and mastery of control... And the purity of that vibrato...
Pavarotti's idol, he said he tried to sing like Jussi Björling, "but I'm only a man".
@@annicaesplund6613 Yes, Pav said he would listen to Bjorling when taking on a new role, but Pav's Idol and favorite tenor was ''Giuseppe Di Stefano''
@@sugarbist True he has said and told me that GDS was his favorite voice of them all, but I think the raves he does give Jussi where in fact the great technique and perfection of JB's voice and singing, but GDS was for voice alone his favorite voice.
It's impossible to sleep listening to Jussi. ❤❤❤
Today, February 2, we celebrate his 100th birthday. He was truly a singer of a century.
Actually it's February the 5th officially Paul
The best ever!. Nothing can compare!
What a voice!
Bjorling is my favorite Calaf of all time.
Yes I think you mean the aria and complete recording he made of the opera with Nilsson, but live in the opera house he never sang the role, that role live was a great fit for Corelli but his was a different kind of voice, less lyric and more Spinto and dramatic a voice compared to the more Lyric beauty and perfection of Jussi, his voice and singing, which was of a very high artistic level.
@@shicoff1398 Thank you for your reply. I believe he was a light tenor, who sang but did not perform his characters.
@@bobbibaker4685 Well he did sing some roles that where heavier then the lighter Lyric ones, like Manrico in Trovatore which he sang often here and in Europe with success, his recording of Trovatore with Warren and Milanov from 1952 is excellent, as is the 1955 Aida recording with Milanov and the Turandot recording complete with Nilsson from 1959, his signature role in Boheme, recorded in 1956 with De Los Angeles is the standard greatest Boheme recording which all others are compared with and it also was his Met. opera debut in 1938. He died at age 49 in 1960.
Wow. Thought he would run out of steam with that phrasing, but nope. Fuck yeah
What to say! I am so proud to be a swed...
Pavarotti said, im quoting; " a voice like mine comes every ten years, a voice like Jussis comes only every millenium"
Pavarotti was extremely diplomatic.
Pavarotti was extremely truthful.
Corelli must once in a million
@ANITA Ospedale Both Bjorling and Pavarotti had beautiful lyric voices. I try to avoid discussions on who was best because repertoire is a consideration.
Nonsense. And what an arrogant thing for LP to say anyway.
As far as Tenors go he was The G.O.A.T.
One of Sweden's best singer!
Cheers from Sweden! 🇸🇪
🤩💖💖💖👍
"En av de bästa" är väl ändå något av en underdrift...
Det beste❤
One of my vocal instructors chanced to workshop with Bjeorling briefly, but it was eye opening. The sound is basically the "ringing" above the tone from bottom to top without let up. Most tenors only produce it during intense moments. Bjeorling compressed his breath consistently compressing chest to head with no shift throughout. Pierces my ears pleasantly. His was the mastery of the mixed technique.
This is the most herotic version of all nessun dorma.
Piano solo collaboration -not orchestra- makes him fully express his herotic ability.
Additionally he is so temperate and refined.
Is it possible? herotic and temperate at the same time???
Who can sing this song like this???
It's a half tone down and It's not heroic at all. Bjorling was a lyric bel canto tenor and a beautiful singer, but JB was NOT a heroic tenor
Herotic? Is that a combination of heroic and erotic?
@@sugarbist Correct, he was . basically a Lyric tenor who had enough metal in his voice to sing some Spinto roles, (great low notes also) and he recorded very well, I saw him in the opera house in 1958 singing in Rigoletto, his voice carried well, it wasn't a large Spinto voice in the opera house and he was very smart in his choice of roles, a very great artist of perfection, he didn't sing Forza, Chenier, Don Jose, Luisa Miller etc. or Calaf of course, and had success in two good size larger roles, both Trovatore and Don Carlo, but also in Europe early (in Vienna, Hungary and Sweden) in Aida, he had some success with it, more so then his later singing of it in the big Chicago opera house in 1958', just a couple of years before he died. He loved concert work more then opera, as he once said "I'm a concert singer who sings opera also" but he hated rehearsals for opera, so he sang lots of concerts besides his opera's, he loved singing Ballo, Boheme, Lescaut, Rigoletto and Trovatore, but in concerts did some of his best work, he sang well in German, French, Italian and his English and Swedish songs where excellent. Live I felt he sang warmer then his sometimes cooler studio records, his voice had adequate volume in his roles and a good point, early he sang about 40 roles while still in Sweden, basically a Lyric tenor or later in his mid 40's a Lyric spinto, it did record well, he was for me at his greatest in concerts, singing so many kinds of music from Italian opera to German Lieder and Swedish and English songs. I like this live version of Nessun Dorma, sung the year I saw him later, in Nov. 1958 in Chicago, (as the Duke) not long after this concert.. RIP. Bjoerling 1911- 1960
@@shicoff1398 some nice information. ty
Those i knew who saw him live said the voice was not nearly as metallic in person as on records
Absolutely masterful.
what a beautiful color of that voice
The great Jussi
The best
what a voice!
Brilliant
The most beautifully controlled vibrato..
I'd say natural vibrato isn't something one controls, it simply IS.
It's only when people start trying to manufacture vibrato that ISN'T natural, or try to sing with none at all, that it starts to sound terrible or peculiar and of course can fall apart.
That was my experience, but then it's only an opinion of course.
Cheers

@@steeltrap3800 I was a classical singer, and you're absolutely right.
@@steeltrap3800 Bla, bla, bla. To have a "true" talent, is not a fabrication or something that you can handle.
It is a monster for those who have it, because it is a slow suicide In the beginning it works, because you are not aware of it. At the end, you are reflecting about the reasons why you did not understand how it all began. And why you are in this situation now.

I'm impressed.
Heaven is falling down !
People, listen to this and Pavarotti's version side by side and you will realize that Pav is the student and Jussi is the master.
About crabbing the the aria is lowered. Caruso complained to Puccini about the exposed high C in Che gelida manina. Puccini, no fool, showed him how to transform it down. If Bjorling asked him to lower Nessun Dorma, I bet he'd say yes in the blink of a eye.
Very few tenors have lowered the Nessun Dorma including Bjorling. This may be the only time he lowered this aria, but it's not a big deal. A tenor doesn't need a composer's permission to lower an aria and certainly not in concert. JB might have just felt more comfortable singing it down a half tone in a recital.
@@sugarbist "doesnt need a permission", of course, who cares, even on a stages there are a bunch of dilettantes like pavarati mingo bareras. Who cares even now?
@@sugarbist Easy to say, when the great composer is dead. Then we can just do whatever the heck we want with his music, right?

He did have something in his voice
Saludos
Inimitable.
I skipped this concert, when I told a friend, in New York, not to buy tickets for it. In fact, I had already heard Bjoerling, live, 5 times, @ 3 different venues, including Carnegie Hall, & never failed to feel disappointed, by the lesser satisfaction his unamplified, smallish voice provided, in a large hall, compared to the much greater enjoyment experienced at home, when listening to his recordings, as witness the vastly greater pleasure
the lp release of the '54 Carnegie Hall recital, has always given me, vs. my memory of the same performance, live, that night, when I was in the audience. It's why I didn't want to do the '58 concert, @ the same venue, when according to reports, he projected a lot better. Indeed, the press, afterwards was ecstatic, & compared him to Caruso, I say, Bah, Humbug!
Un tenor de tronío.
Παναγια μου και Χριστέ μου. Τι μολις άκουσα;
Oh.. my.. fucking... god.
thankyou very much my friend
uh, if you're listing to it on youtube, it's not live. :)
Definately a half tone lower. Many artists will save their voices in live concerts by singing big pieces a half tone lower. Possibly the greatest tenor of all time. When I listen to Corelli, Lanza ( at his best ) and Pavarotti I am also in awe. Each one has something to offer. Bocelli doesn't have that kind of voice, but offers a romantic pure tone in more contemporary songs.
Thanks for posting this.
Not at all (my regrets for having been 3 years tardy in replying to your kind note). Presently, I am scouring the web for another of my 'Holy Grails' -- Anna Moffo live rendition of Un Bel Di, as I recall sung for a benefit at the Met, and hosted by B. Sills, who was audibly stunned at the performance. Haven't found it yet but I'll keep looking.

At this time, he was called. The swedish Caruso
It's testament to how brilliant Jussi was when he sings so beautifully even when accompanied by such a dreadful pianist.
The pianist needed shooting, Jussi didn't need him!
His 1944 recording casts the longest shadow.
@@barrybernstein9049 you have said this on 4-5 channels now. i agree, but why not try to say in other words to avoid looking like a fool?
così si canta.
Only piano accompaniment !! 3:06 if there is any doubt of Jussi Bjorling’s supremacy.
The “best.” There is no “best.”
The endless debate and juvenile arguments read in comments, of who was best, and why, is subjective. There is no debate on Jussi being among the greatest.
The snipes taken at the historical greats of opera, whether choosing a lower key, the high note hit, or, even the interpretation depends on their age, the acoustics, the recording, historical era, in short, it is arrogant to Caro, and a futile effort to claim the “best.”
We should all be grateful for the top tenors and sopranos, each for their own qualities, judged within our own taste and sensibilities, only remembering them at their finest, at their peak. Peace.
Well said, so much more enters into it, roles a singer excelled in and roles the singer didn't. Franco Corelli was a great Calaf live, Tucker was a great tenor in Forza, Bjoerling really great in his signature role, Boheme, so the greatest is just personal opinion, we all hear differently, even some professional critics do.
Well said!❤❤❤
