Dude really turned the project into a re-imagining of the tensegrity design principle.
Bravo. Hopefully 3x3 Custom sees this and it gives her ideas 😏
Fingers crossed.🤞
if the ropes were left long, it could double duty as both holding the chair when "assembled" and also for tying together the roll when its rolled up!
It could fold around when rolled up for a nifty handle as well.
I really enjoy how you also pushed the aesthetics in this version. Your solved the structural issues from the previous prototype, incorporated the solutions, and added design to the mix. Excellent work.
Tamar tried again… I can’t help but sympathize with her frustration.
Just saw the video. It looked so good too, it's a bummer it didn't work out. Her third chair will be perfect.
@@JoshWrightWoodworking i think she overlooked something that was different in the real thing than the demo in begining of video.
she used tape and then used some type of seat belt looking material in the real thing, the key difference being that the tape was glued.
i believe you could still glue the seat belt like material and roll the chair if done correctly. but thats just my 2 cents...
Her video shows up directly below in the suggestions beneath this video🤣 her work is rather outstanding
@@DrNafariousx the strapping would still stretch between the joints and glue between strapping and wood is not gonna be a super great bond, with the amount of stretching force on the strapping the glue might well break.
@@GrayOlson I don’t mean just use glue I mean use the glue and everything else she used aswell. it would reduce the amount of material that can stretch.
Idea: leather strapping. When you roll it up, it looks unwieldy, like it wants to fall open again, plus you have to wrap your arms fully around it to carry it. I'm thinking that you could add a leather strap that would wrap around the roll to hold it together, and then another strap to serve as the handle. Then, when the chair is open for use, the strapping could double as means of holding it open, performing the role of the strings you used at the end. Leather on wood also looks incredible, so boost to aesthetics.
Leather is actually extremely stretchy
@@elijahbrickey151 depends entirely on the thickness and the animal used. Also, for the application I suggested, it wouldn't need to be super rigid anyway.
Source: am leatherworker
@@PatrickCordaneReeves if I was to do this. Any recommendations for the type of leather?
@@gabrieldawa6221 thick cow hide, thick as you can manage. Alternatively, kangaroo if that's possible for you. I hear kangaroo has really long, strong, fibrous leather. Veg-tan in both cases.
@@PatrickCordaneReeves Would the leather need any type of maintenance or coating?
Finally someone using metal banding... I've put that suggestion under the first of these videos... Although palette banding is a bit too weak. I'd still use stainless steel cable.
I know right ive seen like 5 diffrent people try to make this chair
This guy cables
That was my first thought too. No stretching
Only problem with that is after so many roll ups metal tends to get weaker and break at certain points
@@BobLeeSwagger91 that's a good point. You'd have to distribute the bending points as much as possible
I like how you gingerly sit on it for the first time! Maybe with use it will loosen up a bit and keep the chair shape better when no one is sitting on it. You have taken the chair up a notch, good job!
Can’t wait to see like 4 or 5 more of these over the next few years haha. Keep the projects coming, great stuff man. Love the learning and improvement, real inspiring stuff
Those chair projects seem to be popular recently.
I'm waiting for someone to use well placed hinges between the parts instead of straps and magnets so that it snaps into shape once you roll/unroll it.
Tedious, you say? Well, that's why I am not doing it myself :D
Hinges would be the best, that is what I wanted to do but buying 150 hinges is not cheap 😔
Buy piano hinges and cut them.
You can buy whole chains of hinges, all connected end to end. It's called roller chain.
@@grieske fuck! thats the answer man. Kudos
@@grieske that's genius, just swap the rope for chain
That pallet banding is key! genius
Yeah, this is what I was thinking in Tamar's video - ideally you want some kind of metal - sheet or cable or such - holding the chair up. Fabric isn't strong enough and stretches too much. I don't know what that pallet strap was made from, but it looked like a strip of steel sheet. You're working with massive mechanical disadvantage, so you need exceptionally strong material.
steel hinges with steel plates linking the hinges so the wood can't flex is the only thing I can think of, expensive and heavy. Webbing, leather, cloth, or even steel rope have too much stretch. The concept of this chair pushes material science to it's very limit
that's exactly what it is. Just a thin piece of sheet steel.
Glad to see this attempt didn't have any accidental fires. Awesome job!.
I really like that adjustable throat plate. Definitely on my rainy day todo list.
If I tried to figure that out....I think my brain would explode. I go through countless amount of wood, trying to figure out the angle to make a round lid for a chest. Your work is really awesome.
Tamar would be so proud of you!!!!
Flat banding like that tends to heat up and break over time from bending, wouldn't be surprised if it starts to break from all of the rolling, unrolling. Although I'm no expert, just worked with it for a few years
Awesome build! Keep them coming!
Fantastic as always. I am always amazed at the quality work your doing at your age. Keep building.
Love the videos. Noticed you've got a smoke detector beeping in the background of all you VO though and it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up lol.
Excellent to use the pallet banding. That was very clever.
super cool project! you should also add a carrying handle that also keeps the chair closed
That's awesome! Great work!
Simply Amazing: PII Planning Insight & Ingenuity!!
Very clever idea. Interesting use of materials together.
Great improvement. Love seeing some good lumber get a new life!
This was a great video! Glad you followed up and it looks way better this time. So cool! I wish I had these skills/tools.
WOW! just amazing stuff!!!
we have found the roll-up chair, you made it looks great and function great, a complete win
Nice work Josh. A formidable challenge and a Job Well Done!
Incredible!
Never say die! I'm thrilled you're taking a second shot at the round up chair. Living in a small space I try to only have multifunctional pieces. I'd make a top to fit on it rolled up and viola, a side table or coffee table too. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nicely done!
Well done, Josh!
Hey, Rome wasn't built in a day. I think you did a great second try. They say, third times the charm! Keep at it and you'll get to the one that satisfies you. I give it a thumbs up!
Great engineering and great video.
The variable spacing zero clearance insert plate for your table saw is also great. Thanks for posting, and thumbs up.
Wow amazing!
Get it get it. Innovation yo. Great work. Its that itch that needs scratching til you get it.
Excellent work Josh. Kudos to you for taking the original design, which I am convinced has only previously worked inside a CAD model, and making a fully functioning real world solution.
Great Job!
Excellent job 👏
Great job Josh!
Super cool
Nice job! 3x3 has been trying to do this as well
Great Video Josh
I kind of hope this becomes the Blender Donut of woodworking
Good job dude. Strapping is a great idea.
So in the end it turns out the roll-up chair as originally designed is pretty much impossible due to stretch in any material used.
But still this is a nice usable version.
pallet banding is a fantastic material. I'm glad you happened across that, I've been hoping you or Tamar would think of that eventually
wow great work!! congrats!
I really enjoyed that, great idea to use pallet strapping!
Lets go man POWER 💪
Nice editing. I know nothing about carpentry, but I enjoyed watching your video.
The banding was PERFECT! Lol great work! Hopefully Tamara gets hers on point 3rd time around.
This could easily be turned into a challenge series .....would love to see other woodworkers try this project......😃😃
Very cool
Very Impressive
The jigsaw puzzle 🧩 of chairs 🪑
you can get dynamic and non dynamic rope, youd want non -dynamic for this purpose., its super strong with no stretch , expensive as its for professional rock climbing, but you can usually buy it by the yard/metre
Nice job. I have, just a guess but probable 500 board feet of Rosewood.. Just finished a custom living room set with some it (tables). Been banging my head ,,,what to do next. It might very well be a roll up chair set. I just hit the subscribe button
First I was thinking you should have ripped the pieces with the blade at an angle. Then you said "rope" and I'm thinking rope??? And then you showed an adjustable throat plate for dado use! I've never seen that before, what an idea.
6:41 best part #FlyGuy
Would crossing the ropes at the back help to stabilise any sideways movement?
you did better than 3x3s second attempt. great design!
very nice
Awesome job dude, that must have taken some serious head scratching to work it all out. Just open the chair out the opposite way and chamfer some of those Z ‘leg’ angles a bit more to tighten that lower curve and should sit back quite nicely then without having to alter the top strapping. Seriously great design dude, get that refined and guarantee you some furniture art lover would pay good money for that as it’s just just a chair it is a piece of art, great piece displaying both form and function to a high degree.
0:26 Nice video compositing of the stacked pine with your name on it, had to watch twice to see the trick :)
you got us to subscribe great video
WHAT!!! No fire this time 😂...Very well done
Ayyy first! New chair looks good!
Great idea at 5:20
Try a slightly longer curved at the end base and you got a sweet rocking chair.
Add a rope that is fixed to the foot/beginning of the chair, that can be hooked on a hook on the end/top of the chair, so that the chair is stable when rolled-out/set-up even without a person sitting on it. After rolling up the chair for transport you can use the same rope to wrap around the bundle a few times and then fix at the beginning on a secondary hook, so that the chair doesn't unroll while it is being transported.
Lol I write this, unpause the video and you add it, okay I guess its obvious ;), but using it to secure for transport might be a nice double use of the rope...
Good job on the z shape and that pallet band stuff. The z shapes remind me of tetris, might be cool to do a tetris themed chair.
Great project! Shame the straps were a bit too tight though, almost!
congratulation
now do this but as a beach / poolside recliner :D
What i would suggest is try building a small scale mock up....jus to figure out with the overall layout and asthetics of the chair ..before attempting the right scale....maybe u can try it with dowels by drilling holes on them and feed ropes between those holes or incorporate some kind of a metal chain or so, instead of the angled cuts of the slats and try elongating the seating area.... anyways gr8 video and keep on trying ...were here to support u.....cheers!!😀😀👍🏻👍🏻
The second time is even cooler
You are correct the rope definitely would have stretched and you wouldn't be able to pull it hard enough to get the stretch out you might have been able to use super static rope but the banding was 100 percent the right call
won't the pallet binding work harden with multiple uses?
Try manila rope it doesn't stretch much. It's used for that very purpose.
Isn't that Z shape you used in the chair the same that they use for making barrels to age whiskey in
Caught the Easter egg!
Add handle to carry and may be something to lock when chair is cloused
Haha 🤣 I was watching a different UA-camr and she tried to make one and i gave her the same advice to use steel straps this is the first time I seen this video
You should make and sell these bro!
Yes awesome job, I think you ought to seriously continue improving this till it’s super thin, kid-safe, and still durable up to 250 lbs, then connect with a manufacturer.
till it’s super thin, kid-safe - i.e. make if from aluminum, hinges and cover the aluminum w/ veneer wood. At 250 pounds (no rocking), you are looking at 2000+ pounds of force on the front bend.
@@stanimir4197 yikes 2000lbs is a lot of force, but does the force get spread across the multiple hinges of the front bend, or is that roughly 2000lbs on each hinge?
Nice work. How many days of work it took you to finish it? :)
Is that the new m12 pin nailer? How do you like it
It works great! I'm used to buying cheap ryobi tools so the price made me reluctant to buy but it was well worth it.
@@JoshWrightWoodworking glad to hear that. I bet it is much lighter and more comfortable than the ryobi brad nailer. I’m kinda tired of how big it is. I think I’ll pick it up when/if it goes on sale next.
Pallet-banding, you're talking about spring steel right?
smart
Your table saw looks like a jobsite saw. What brand is it?
Curious since most jobsite / small tablesaws cannot fir a dado blade.
at 4:10-4:18, leave the blade down till it stops spinning, stops it ripping the piece back up
hey man, nice work!
whats the weight of the finished chair?
Thanks! Not totally sure, maybe like 15-20lb. Not very practical but pretty fun lol.
When you p[icked it up at the end, it looked like you were carrying a wooden model of a tank.
Can’t wait to find this at Pier 9 for $3000 and IKEA for $100 with all assembly required
I wonder if you used a very hard wood or other material? And work on the banding a little more
If you're going to cut angle cuts again, why not do it before the glue up? Would it make any functional difference? 🇺🇲
I have an idea for the next one use steel round bars through the wood and maybe you have more support The wood is too flexible and I think if you do it this way you can make it so it sits like you want it and if you sit on it doesn’t flex that much or maybe the whole construction will crank and it’s over can you please take a look in this idea 💡
i saw the oj vid and with that spray paint fire insident you might want to invest in a fire blanket because it cuts out oxigen when you trow it on top of somthing
I wonder how much weight it could reliably carry
