There’s a sort of imposter syndrome that I think UA-cam and social media has caused. Because we’re able to learn so much from this platform, followed by practicing on iur own along with publishing to UA-cam, the practical knowledge we’ve learned creates a sort of self doubt based on what the industry leads us believe. It’s my belief that if/when we enter the industry, we have a deep knowledge and understanding of specific aspects such as camera knowledge, lighting, sound, and focal range.. all of the things we can practice on our own, however once we enter the professional production, we get overwhelmed when we realize how much we don’t know. I think this is why you are so comfortable behind the camera, because this is what you’ve practiced time and time again, and I think given time, you’ll probably shift into a director role as that’s what you’ve done with your self, essentially directing yourself and maybe one or two others. Absorb as much as you can, and don’t hold yourself back by believing you aren’t worthy.
@@vincem3393Nobody said imposter syndrome came from social media. Their point was that you need practical experience even if you (think you) know everything about what you’re doing from watching videos.
film equipment is so cheap the market is over saturated with content and "filmmakers". if you dont mind being broke go for it. but supporting a family and buying a home will be a challenge for 99.9% of filmmakers
Brooo this hit home! The journey is different for everyone, but it’s amazing to see who we meet along the way! Also, to see the UA-cam Film community come together is crazy, You, Kofi, Brittany, Brady and Cam working together…. That’s wild!!!! 🔥
Truly such a special experience. A lot of people won’t understand it and will see it for a typical “hype” train… but this was a hugeeeely refreshing change for all of us.
Being in control of most of the creative process, to giving that up someone else is a difficult transition to make, but we learn in these ways. Great knowing this feeling is universal
Been following you for 2 years now and as I grow in the industry my anxiety doesn't disappear. To hear you talk about anxiety is so relatable and it comforts to know I'm not alone in this. It is a tough industry but to hear other people's vulnerabilities about such topics is rare, and very helpful. Truly inspiring, keep up the good work!
I have gotten into filmmaking about 8 months ago and already loving it. BUT, I didn't wanted to be a filmmaker from the day I was born. My interest and my thoughts grew into by time. As always Ryan, love watching your videos. Keep going 👍🏽
I'm not as far down into it as you are, but I totally get this. Every job I get thats a bigger one than last I find a huge amount of the time beforehand worrying will I be able to do this? Then on the day once I get into the groove it turns out to not only go just fine but a fun time. The comradery is great, you learn a lot and always network and expand your network. Pretty cool to see all the other awesome creators, Cammackay is someone I've watched a lot of recently, great dude
I love your raw and down to earth videos man! Glad to see we all have similar thoughts and feelings, no matter how far along we are on our individual journeys as creatives. Kudos for being you and always creating real content!
Thank you Ryan for this video, im in film school right now and will be done in 6 months and this was a really good video, alot of the stuff you said really resonated with me.
There really isn't such a thing as success in filmmaking. Only a beginning, middle and end. In the beginning, you know nothing and are a pure artist at heart. In the middle you learn skills and perfect various things. IN the end, you try and return to who you were in the beginning.
Thanks, as always, for the FANTASTIC video. Indeed, I have (almost) always believed that life is NOT about being BEST at anything. Only people like Plato, Jobs, Einstein etc can HOPE and TOIL for that. And , THEY, can ALMOST get it. For me, as it seems you , it’s always about PERSONAL BEST… and getting a tiny bit better as many days as you can. I’ve worked with GREAT people like Lloyd Kaufman (Troma Toxic Avenger 2-4) and people like Lili Taylor, Phil Collins , Steve Buscemi etc. and I see THEY toil with this principle. It’s all about PERSONAL BEST. Sweetie and I watch (but never comment) on your videos. And we know you work SO HARD with the daily PERSONAL BEst principle and great things come from it. Jay, what an experience man. Such a pleasure getting to make this vision come to life with you and the team. I truly hope for more to come. Thanks for trusting us!
Thankyou for making such an inspirational video in the most simplest words...I've taken few imp things from this video as a working professional Director n Dp Hope It'll help me take more wise decisions on set in Future.😇
Finding your place in a new role on set is always challenging but rewarding. Thanks for sharing and also, what mic/audio setup did you use to record your VO in this video?
The link to the trailer in the description leads to nothing and says the account has been deleted. Just for you to know. I guess its not yet possible to watch the whole short film, is it?
Dude I’ve been working for +20 yrs and I still feel like I’m spoiled asf. I don’t like the big productions. Just want to tinker and tell stories every day. Without the money being by an issue 😂
I am a coloured from South Africa, and I'm a filmmaker, dp mostly...I can't describe but I really don't want to be a part of the industry. White people ran industry...and I have no problem with that I just feel like so many people of colour has to subscribe to those values in order to be liked and network effectively. I'm not a broski or a dude... all these people are good people I'm probably just ignorant and don't want to change or adapt....I just want to be a filmmaker not create a new persona just too fit in w8th the cool kids and shit.
Very inspiring to see you grow. I see so many young people coming to this great industry and start to hustle. And it seems after all this years more and more do understand that for a progressive career development it is so crucial that you work on personal development as well. I think it is very important to keep a humble balance and it‘s looking very good on you. Thank you for sharing your journey. 🙏🏼
iFootage? Someone on that set needs to make a we made a short on some cheep no-name Chinese lights with a Apple branding name of iFootage; and they paid for it! 🙄
So I'm watching this video, minding my own business and HE shows up in another UA-camr's video..., Are they cloning this guy? Is there a vending machines that spits this model? Forget about the threat of AI, keep an eye on that one!
Absolutely agree. Would have loved being a part of a production with more women on set. And I have seen an increase over the last few years. Myself, along with my wife are doing our best to be part of this change! Cheers!
Too much Masculine energy on this Set. You should balance the genders more. Very pragmatic pack shots overall...are you going to the desert to do more indoors? Looks like you're more interested in the Neon Lights of the Motel.
Starting at 11:09 seconds, you will hear abnormal noises every two seconds. It is a very annoying sound. Please don’t do this again. Your audio is terrible!

My heart is so glad you connected with this 🖤
every upload of yours, just wanna say thank you man, not a lot of people who talk about this kind of anxiety ❤️
I’m really glad this hit for you, it’s been a great relief and sense of self development for me to be able to share these stories
