Daniel Johnson, journalist and editor of what he calls the "not very right-wing" magazine Standpoint, called Islam "the most direct threat to Western civilization in the world today".
Johnson deplores the lack of "freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, equal rights, and separation between church and state" in Islamic countries, emphasizing that "all these ideals emerged in the West."
Johnson claims that a university like Oxford, with its tradition of free academic inquiry, could not exist under the conditions of an Islamic state and that "there is no university in this sense in the Islamic world".

I had what I hoped to be a healthy conversation with a former friend who is Muslim. She tried telling me multiple inadequacies about Christianity. I acknowledged her confusion in some areas, but tried to educate her on others. When it was time to discuss her religion, she called me Islamophobic, and chastised me. She now has blocked me despite me being the same person who she runs to with troubles in her life. I told her I apologize for whatever I did to hurt you because Romans 12:18 states to have peace with everyone, as long as it depends on you. But two things I know for sure, she’s not a real friend and Islam is NOT a religion of peace.

The logical conclusion is that people's actions say nothing about a religion; only its texts do. If the texts don't advocate stealing, for example, then you can't blame the text for those actions. Otherwise, someone writing a book about not killing people would be responsible if any of its readers decide to kill people.

I think the real issue with all these discussions about whether or not Islam is a religion of peace is that...more fundamentalist muslims around the world don't even think that this kind of peace that we here in the west are talking about (so for example...freedom of expressing oneself without being attacked for it etc. pp.) is even a good or desirable thing. They don't WANT that kind of "western peace" - they want their cultural/ social/ religious system installed and maintained by force - whether it is on the private or state level - because they think it is the only right one and because the idea in Islam to "earn your way up to heaven" - even on the cost of others - is not exactly in the way of it.
So all these discussions are rather futile as it is usually a moderate/ modern/ "westernized" muslim discussing and defending their own idea of their religion in a heated debate with a westerner - but they basically both share the same civilizational values - which are NOT shared by at least a majority of muslims.
So it is kind of a fake discussion up in their ivory tower so to say.
The real question should be how to reach and gently convince the "average Joe", more fundamentalist muslim to dare to take a careful look at their religion (not their faith), acquire more knowledge about it (and lots of other issues as well) that then enables them to think critically and without fear or ignorance and to start moderinzing it. And that doesn't have to mean westernize or modify. Simply modernize.
