    LOL! SERIOUSLY LAUGHING OUT LOUD! I'm watching your video sitting next to my hubby of 46 years(May 21) who is grinning from ear to ear with his arms up in the air making the GOAL sign after hearing that your husband mooned you. My husband does crap like that when I'm on the phone and he would so do that if I ever taped a vid. THANK YOU for proving we are not the only weird ones out there. You made my day

    I love the pages when they get all crinkly. And then I have to make sure that my paint leaks and drips onto the sides so that I have a rainbow effect when the book is closed. Of course, throughout the process I am making the fun sounds that only paper and paint can make. Yes, this is def the right hobby. I am so glad I found your page.

    Shannon thank you so much for doing this. Got my book, glued the pages, went thru and did background paint and glued down torn book pages, painted deli paper and torn scrapbook papers and now I need to finish the rest. What a way to get started. I've been so nervous to try art journaling but this allows you to do whatever comes to mind in that moment. I got some magazines from my daughter and I've been cutting away. Can't wait to finish. Thank you so much for teaching us this technique :D jb

    Shannon...Shannon...Shannon...I ended up snorting coffee out of my nose when Jayson mooned you!!! LOL Your Journaling by 5s has become a world sensation...You're a star! :-) I think too many people are wound a little tight and need to let go in their art process. They keep thinking they are making "mistakes"...like there are major rules to follow. I love your creative process because you definately aren't one of those people. Because of that, you come up with outstanding ideas!!!

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 років тому

      Cathy Rose Creations I'm not the star, Cathy. All I did was throw the idea out there and show my end result. It's the people who were brave enough to try it who are the stars! They're the ones who have taught the technique (not me) and whose efforts have encouraged others to try as well. I absolutely LOVE how this has worked out!!

    For what it's worth, I LOVE the buckled pages. For me this whole exercise isn't about creating a perfect journal, it's about stretching me in the art process, helping me to learn how to be more random and spontaneous instead of thinking everything through. The timed sessions are super in helping me to do this. And thanks for the glue tips. It made perfect sense. You are always very clear in your directions even if it might not seem that way to you. I appreciated hearing how the glue expands the pages. Thanks Shannon!

    Thank you so much for this great tutorial! I’ve been trying to get back into art journaling and my brain was not remembering how to put everything together. I took some notes and plan to follow the rules which a
    I’m a stickler for. Art journaling is very relaxing for me and at this time in my life I am so in need of relaxation techniques. The only rule I will not follow is using a timer. Lol I will do the steps in 15 mins but I’ll just watch the clock. The timer for me would defeat the purpose of relaxing. Again, thank you.

    Girl, you crack me up! If I wouldn't have already fallen in love with you and your idea of journaling by five this video would have done it for me! I came here to tell you how much I've been enjoying watching these videos but ran into this video on the way...I am laughing along as you're laughing, nothing is ever easy is it? I prepared my pages last night while watching others in progress and I have minimal buckling(she said with a tiny bit of pride in her voice.) I used Elmers glue sticks-two in fact so I had to get more today. I used pretty paper clips to section my groups of papers so I didn't forget where I was...my own personal abacus! I put glue on both pages and dropped it down toward the skinny side. All kidding aside, the wet glue seemed a little less controlled and the weeping blue lines kind of got to me. I am here to learn, to be spontaneous and challenge my boundaries but the running lines is where I draw the line! After I glued the pages I put the paper clip back on to hold them together and I did put heavy stuff on it.
    Anyway, thanks for the challenge and the laughter...toward the end of the video you sounded like you were trying to calm down frightened children! snicker snicker!

    I literally just watched this for the third time. I love texture, buckling is my friend. I watched several times because it made me smile to know how uptight we can be about simple things. My pet peeve is keeping the house in order but when it comes to my art it’s anything goes baby. I really appreciate your take on relax and enjoy the ride on the art mobile. It’s all good stuff just depends on the day for me. Do I want texture or smooth surface bold colors or subdued hues? My mood dictates and that’s a pretty cool thing.

  • @katpaints
    @katpaints 9 років тому

    I love the video! I confess to being a glue addict... not sniffing but buying and seeing what works! I was thinking as you were gluing that putting the glue on the dry third and fourth pages would help them even out at the edges, not that it is at all necessary! I know the bucking thing with watercolors. Unless you have extremely heavy paper, it WILL buckle! Stretching helps a lot but most of the time I just flatten it afterwards. I am jealous of your type weights! I have a 10 pound bag of steel shot I bough many years ago to make some smaller weights for things like this but so far it works just fine the way it is. It came in a plastic bag covered with a fabric bag, and handles well! I also have one of my mother's sad irons. She got married during WW2 and electric irons were not available! I need to try your journaling ideas. I know I have a comp book around here some place!

      I have glued them! I used a gadget I've had for some time. It's called a Rollataq glue applicator and it puts out a very thin coat of glue. The pages are awfully flat - not going to be a lot of texture, though! LOL! But it went fairly quickly and it has now dried. I have my very old paints lined up ready to go! I bought a lot of them in the early 80's - and they are still fine! I'm not sure if I'm going to tape it. I did a little practice - trying to get the camera set up. So far it is upside down. :/ We'll see!

    Shannon, I apologize that I did not see this video before I asked on the Facebook group what glue was good to use. I was traveling when this video was made, and just found it today! You said Yes paste, which I either have to order or drive an hour to see if they have any, so I might just stick with my glue sticks if I get impatient. They are drier than the white glue in this video and you said the paste was drier. I know what you mean about the edges. The glue sticks work great, but you have to really get the edges good. I have already completed one book, but was thinking of doing another, but then again, maybe a zibaldone instead, but with the same type of book and pages. Thanks again!

      Lueee Lueee No apology necessary! Depending on what kind of glue stick you have, sometimes you can take all the glue out of it and sort of squish it up good so it gets softer then apply it with a credit card. That won't work with really sticky glue sticks but for the ones like Elmer's washable...it works.

    Phhh. But that is even better! Lets have a tour of your workroom (mine is a shed, lol) and see your piles of wonderful wonderful papers, stashes, whatever. You are such an inspiration. Your stuff is so TACTILE me and my daughter have been sitting watching some of your videos more than once being lulled into a silly state of hypnosis just looking at your hands turning your various pages making yummy crinkly noises....well I suppose you have heard them all now. You deal with paints and colour with such inspiring abandon and freedom! And you are very VERY funny too....lol

      Enrica Mcintosh You wouldn't believe the hateful comments I get about my hands! Apparently they trigger seizures in some people. LOL Oh well, I just tell them to, "Look away, look away!!!!" My art room is a work in progress and will be a work in progress for quite some time I'm sure. In August we moved into a new house and it will take some time for me to save up for shelving and things like that. So...I really have nothing to show but that's never stopped me from making a video so you can take a peek at my nothing here: ua-cam.com/video/Njj9LuBGizU/v-deo.html

    I have used discarded library books, tear out every 5th pg, then glue 3 or 4 pges together. the paper is different so it doesn't wrinkle as bad. then I will give the page a quick coat of gesso so any form of paint I use wont soak through. what I didnt know you can water down the glue & it still works. thxs 4 the input. as far as the pges crinkling that goes with the territory. it adds character 2 the journal.

    I used a composition book and did get buckling. However, if you put a few heavy books on the closed composition book after you glue, it flattens out and lays almost flat. Besides which, I like the wrinkling on the pages.

    I just love all your techniques Shannon. I was crazy (still am) over the watercolor-edge pages, and now the journalling by fives is helping me and my mom actually art journal together! (She says she's not artsy, but she's having a blast) I'm starting on a second composition book and in gluing the pages this time I wanted less wrinkles. Last time I used regular Elmer's, but this time I'm using Yes paste and a credit card, spreading it thin and then using another card like a squeegee to get all the air out. It's working really well, and I think it's because it's such a dry glue. I'm wondering if the Elmer's would work better if it wasn't so wet? I guess I'll have to try that next time! Thanks again for all your ideas, and keep em comin!!

      M Judd Elmer's will always be wet and wrinkly and buckley...It's the nature of the beast! It's also the only type of glue that some folks have access to, especially internationally, so I wanted to give some tips for it. It's so cool that you and your mom are doing this together!! We're all creative in some way, whether we think so or not :)

    I find glue full strength doesn't buckle as much as the watered down glue. You just have to work REALLLY quickly. I also have had the best luck using up some old Mod Podge to glue pages together - it made the paper super sturdy and had less buckling than glue.

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 років тому

      Sheila Northcutt When I use undiluted glue, I get fewer wrinkles but more buckles. With diluted glue I get more wrinkles but fewer buckles. Fortunately I don't mind either one!

    Have you ever tried rolling the glue on? I use a small paint roller with a flat roller cover (not a thick nap) and thinned glue. Its a fairly easy way to get a thin even coat. I have not tried it with thin paper though. Its also kinda fun. Also you can wash the roller covers and use them again.

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 років тому

      Patty Kelly I haven't tried that but will give it a go next chance I get...thanks!!

      Shannon Green FYI - I use the small roller that comes with its own small paint tray. Generally the roller cover that comes with it is the flat nap. I have a little trouble finding the flat nap roller cover refills but they do make them.

    Have you tried glue sticks on this? I have got 2 Dick Blick glue sticks, that I am trying out. It seems to be working okj to glue telephone book type pages together. It's actually Arkansas guide, but same paper. I figure I gotta use them up on something. They buckle a bit less, but you have to use LOTS of glue. It doesn't seem to take any longer than it takes you to do the wet glue, and I don't think I would trust the cheap glue sticks, well these were inexpensive, but they seem better than the regular ones you get at the dollar or drug store. While they don't buckle, they still wrinkle and stuff, because I'm kinda klutzy that way, but I don't care. I put washi tape around the covers, not sure if i am going to do it on the rest of the pages. I'm doing groups of 4 or 5, depending on what I remember. lol.

      I have trust issues with glue sticks and it takes a LOT of them so I normally don't use them for this kind of gluing.

      Enrica Mcintosh LOL You would probably be very disappointed! I don't have zillions at all. I do art journaling but it's not the only thing I do. Some art journalers fill book after book after book and they journal every day...I don't do that. I have lots of varied interests so I really don't have that many journals! But...I will honor your request and add it to my list of future videos.

    I was wondering where I got the idea of using Gesso to glue all the pages together. I must have seen it on a video but can't seem to find the video. It also made the pages a mess and wrinkly, but after painting and adding other things to the pages the wrinkly wasn't noticed that much, in fact it might have added to it some. This art journaling is a wonderful and creative tool to help destress and unwind a bit. Thank you for sharing your videos on this, very informative and helpful.

    Was there magic in the moon?? Just seemed too funy that your words were there is no magic just before he exposed himself to you :). Haha. I am so excited about trying this already saving up some junk mail and gonna get a composition boom too gonna hit up the dollar tree for some of their cheapy glue and other paints. Haha maybe I should set a 25.00 budget to continue the 5s thing. Great Idea lady!!

      Stitching Mae That was such a hilarious coincidence! I just can't tell you how excited I am that you're giving this a try! It's the perfect way to test the waters and see what you think about the whole paper crafting/art journaling thing. Start with the bare necessities, cheap dollar stuff, give it a try and see how it goes. If you like it, then you can decide if it's worth investing a little more.

    What if you don’t glue the one inch from the binding. Would that work?

  • @PinkPoodleCrafts
    @PinkPoodleCrafts 9 років тому

    Would it work better if you just glued the edges of the pages together? Rather than glue the entire page, just go around the edge?

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 років тому

      Pink Poodle Crafts It probably would if I wasn't going to use so much wet media on the pages. If you glue just the edges together then slap a bunch of paint on the page, it warps the top page and makes it sort of 'pull away' from the others which makes excess bulkiness. It's a strange phenomenon and definitely an option if you don't mind puffy pages :)

      +Michele Bernstein It depends on the glue you use. Sometimes heat will remelt the glue which does smooth the papers out somewhat. Just beware of glue smooshing out the edges and gunking up your iron!
