Hello. I'm from Europe, and it's interesting to hear a review from an American perspective. Here maintaining a Mercedes isn't costlier than maintaining a Toyota. In fact it's very easy to find cheap parts and the mechanics charge normal prices. Lexus on the other hand are considered expensive to maintain because it's hard to find parts for them and also not many specialists who know how to work on them.
Marc, I don’t understand your idea of quality experience. Knocking and picking on plastics in the car, pushing on buttons. Reliability is the ability to get you where you need to go and not have to worry that your wife is out with the car, possibly with your children, if you have them since you never mention that part, reliability is knowing that it would be prone to breaking down and leaving your loved ones stranded. That what I look for, if the car gets me where I need to go 99.9 percent of the time, I consider it reliable. If it has plastics, well I understand your point but it doesn’t necessarily stop the car from doing its job
I had a Toyota last over 600,000 me to sold it and the guy tore it up it was running fine with me Mexico you name it I've been there on that Toyota never let me down I should have kept that car when I had a 1 million miles right now on it or more😮😮😊😊
Hey Mark great video as always My opinion is as for reliability you can compare any Japanese car to late 90s mercedes not modern ones. Newer mercedes are up in technology but down in reliability that's it..
Exactly that’s what i said the old benz were good were reliable ( men were men) but the new ones they are POS they only thing they focus is technology that’s it.even new Toyotas
I have driven MBs since the 1960s. I normally drive them for 300+K miles. I have never had to have one towed or had one that left me stranded. Along with the many other cars and trucks I have owned the MBs have had the lowest Total Cost of Ownership of the lot, i.e. (all costs - disposal price)/ total miles = TCO/mi. Current MB BEV has an estimated TCO (won’t know the real TCO until I dispose of it) of 35¢/mi.
Mercedes Benz is the most reliable for its intended life span, ~5-6 yrs, despite constant innovations and new technologies. Toyota is more reliable longer term but relies on old tech.
Great video. I'll stick with my low mileage 09 Lexus ES350. Boring reliable cars are the best. If I want a blast I'll take the C5 ragtop out and row the gears, better yet pull out the Harley Deuce and run it out. Great videos. I enjoy the real world you present.
In Germany , a common car is the E Class (taxi's) and in fact the E Class was heavily sold to the German taxi industry way back when Mercedes was pushing sales from the 60's 70's onward. Globally the E is regarded as luxury. It's a matter of perception. The rubber on the Camry's hood is not to cover up a large panel gap, it's to seal and keep dust out. Lexus has this and Lexus has rubber stripping on all gaps incl. the doors for isolation. Nevertheless Mercedes is not what it was 40 years ago and if they were, they'd be out of business. The life of a car today is 5 years, like a Microwave. If you get anything more, you're lucky.
I’m here in Austin TX. After watching your videos and seeing those cars you feature constantly caked in snow, ice, dirt grime and road salt, I’m honestly shocked many of them last past the 3 year mark.
In Finland, with the coldest days at -25 to -45°C (lowest temperature ever measured about -54°C), people drive as an average 13 years with a car... Toyota is big in Finland, but they don't sell Camry since ????.
Not even close that Toyota if maintained will be driving like it was new in 300k miles. The Benz will be great until it hits 100k-150k miles then will drive you to the poor house trying to keep up with all the repairs that also cost 3-4 times more than the Toyota repairs. By the way I have seen that Toyota Camry model with 300k miles on it already so they are already breaking the 300k mile marks. That being said the Mercedes rides and drives way better and is a totally different experience so for somebody that can afford it and the repairs will enjoy it way better than the Camry. Now why would you compare a Camry with a Mercedes? Not even an equal comparison. Get a Lexus and compare it to that Benz and I promise you it will blow it off the road in every category IMO:P
Do you really think that someone that buys a new Mercedes will ever "repair" it? No, if you buy a new Mercedes you sell it latest at 120,000 km /75,000 miles. Most of the cars last at least to about 150,000 km/90,000 miles. I would not call this reliability! After that the repair costs can be almost anything! The problem is that a car that wasn't sold first hand, can't be bought second hand.
Garbage cars I would always choose a Lexus over any of their Garbage. The Germans should be ashamed because in the 70's and early 80's they did build the best cars ever made they would easily go a million miles. Now they barely last past 100k it is a complete disgrace. Japanese build cheaper cars that run circles around German Junk! People buy them for one purpose the name to say Hey! Look what I drive and that is it. Junk!@@leiflillandt1488
Man! Excellent presentation, very informative and very precise…being a former Mercedes owner (W 123, W 124, and W 211) I wish that Daimler Benz AG brings back the simplicity and sturdiness of the W 123 and W 124…the W 211 wasn’t that great an ownership experience…thank you again for this!
Love your videos! Always great work! I have owned two E-Class Merc. A 2010 and a 2016. Never had any serious issues with either of them. I have had minor things break on them, and it is stupid expensive to get them fixed. Still love the car though. I wonder if the E-Class is better quality than the C-Class? Or is the added cost just window dressing?
He forget one very important fact Getting into an accident in a Toyota is a life gamble, where Merc has top notch safety standards. For my wife and kids I would never trade a german for japanese
I have a 4 year old Acura, and a 5 year old MBZ. Acura service costs way less than MBZ. Acura has no issue at all with service that usually runs $100-$200. My MBZ had engine mounts replaced. One was cracked, and had to replace both total at $2000. Plus service at$1000. That was last maintenance bill $3000. One prior to that was $3800 for Services included tires, battery, differential, sparks plugs. The MBZ is reliable. Nothing is malfunctioning, but I’m just imagining if anything is broken; how much would that be?
Acura is just a Honda with different badge. Mercedes-Benz is the world's most famous automaker. They made the world's first automobile with over 100 years of history.👍
Very well. I don’t disagree with what you said, but I disagree that Honda is not as prestigious. So do you call an Audi and rebadged VW? I can assure you that Acura drives better than a Honda. Yes Honda has a shorter history than MBZ, but it still has a winning history and track record in Formula 1, Indy Car Series, IMSA, Motorcycle GPX, and Motor Cross. If you ever driven a NSX, you’ll not think less of Acura. I almost think of them as Japanese BMW.
@majorcalvary6515 There is no Acura in its country Japan, only Honda. The reason they rebadged it from Honda to Acura in America because they want to compete with other luxury brands and to make more profit. In Japan, they called Honda NSX and in America, they called Acura NSX but it's basically the same car. Honda or Acura is for poor people and Mercedes-Benz is for rich people. That's why we always see billionaires, millionaires, kings, queens, presidents and world leaders own and drive Mercedes-Benz.
It’s nice to go to the dealer but yea, they charge a lot for simple intervals. I do my own oil changes, tires, and brakes on my 2013 C250. Speaking I work at an auto shop, I get wholesale price so I’m saving thousands. The only big repair I had was my ESL malfunction which was $1700. Other than that my car is fine with 106k miles.
Mercedes and Toyota both have similar rates of buyer retention so apparently they are both doing pretty well appealing to their customers. Those returning owners of both marques are happy enough with their present vehicle to buy another one from the same manufacturer. Comparing a mass-market brand to a premium brand is like comparing apples to oranges. I'm sure people shopping for a Toyota Camry don't cross-shop for a Mercedes C-Class or vice versa.
We look after it, maintained as per factory, and other than the winters it sees, there is not reason for it not to last, but there are issues. We must have a lemon
I have a 14 yyear old c class 180 Kompresser. Nothing has ever failed apart from the normal service charge prompts. The newer Mercedes are the ones that have problems.
Thanks Mark for the vid. I fully support you not bringing your private life into your videos. That is safety and security. Please do not bring or mention your family as we know the sick people who crawl social media. Thanks for your channel.
Who's ranking list was that at the end. It actually put BMW in 3rd place. I'm still going back and forth on my decision to buy either a RX350 or an X540i, (2020-2022 models). BMW scares though with their high price services. My2003 4.7l 4 runner is still running strong at 220KMs, can the newer X5 do that now? I know everyone is raving about the B58 engines and the ZF trannies. BMW resale values still tanks every year compared to Lexus.
My Camry 2010 has a notch less than 300K miles on it. I just returned back from a short 10K mile trip across the East-West coast of the US and everything in between. The mechanical cost: One Jiffy lube oil change. So Benz can literally sit on it :)
Mercedes has two main different vehicle platforms: MRA (Mercedes Rear Architecture) and MFA (Mercedes Front Architecture), the Benz from Marc belongs to MRA platform which is often more expensive. I have realized (here in Germany) the cars from this architecture are much more complex and more costly to maintain where as the "compact" class MFA cars are more likely the Toyota build and cheaper in maintaince. The overall reliability is also very good at the "MFA Benz cars" this I can see in our "ADAC" (German Automobile club" analysis for reliability (each year there is a report) and Benzes like the Mercedes GLA, GLB for instance have very good performance in reliability. So what I want to say: Benz models can be very different in their reliability performance and cost of ownership. That is why I personally would always go for the "MFA" cars like the Mercedes B oder GLB class.
I have an 22 AMG that was seriously broken at 30k miles. It had the top half of the motor replaced. The cat is damaged and mercedes will no longer honor the warranty. Its at 46k. This was my first and last mercedes product.
MB ML350 and possibly others are made in Alabama USA plant, people refer to them as the Alabama trashcan! I still think they're good cars although not made to last as long as the old ones made in Germany. I own a BMW and Dodge Durango. None are perfect! thanks for the video!
Bro compare a camry or any other Toyota made in Japan,it's a even better quality that the same Toyota's made in u .s,cap in door ect are smaller than ones made in u.s,Japanese have a passion to make autos,u.s see it as a job,it's build %100,but Japan %150.and u cnt put the Camry with a top luxury with the Benz, use a crown u wud see the differences..
Lexus killed the GS, the only car that could compete with m340i and c43 amg. Now there's only IS 350 and it's getting a bit long in the tooth, though still reliable as heck. There's just no Toyota vehicles left to compete with the Germans, so people are forced to take this gamble to drive something that's not milquetoast.
You are right and hopefully some of these brands step up their game to put some healthy competition out there. Sadly even the Nissan GTR is getting old and tired and we are all waiting for more interesting offering s
Luxury car are selling feeling, atmosphere, safe . vehicle are not only let you go A to B,most important is do the best for making you safe from A to B . search the IIHS,they have the statistics:how many driver died per million vehicle (different vehicle), Mercedes Benz has long been at the top of safest list (Lexus also, but not so much), some model have zero died record.look black to Toyota, you will know what I mean
I gave Mercedes 3 chances with the the GL, E class and C class. None went over 165k miles. I like Audi much better. My son's 419k miles Toyota Camry v6 is his daily drive and on the original trans/engine
I think some of has to do with supply chains and where they are made. You want a German car buy one made in Germany. I would assume the supply chain had higher quality parts when made in Germany. I have a friend who has one of those beautiful C class made in South Africa. We will see his experience as the miles are put on. We like well made fun cars. we suck it up and deal with it for the enjoyment of the ride. I like the Lexus brand but understand why people like Mercedes
I believe your experience with the C300 is a fluke I have a 2023, 2022 in my Turo fleet and have had zero issues. I also have a 2022 C43 AMG with a tad over 25,000 miles on the clock. All 3 engines have been trouble free, only requiring oil changes so far. The only issues so to speak have been with the Mercedesme application requiring reinstalling at the dealership.
I am a bit disappointed as an owner of a 2022 Tacoma and 2023 Rav 4 that Toyota is using plastic components in the last generation models. Hopefully, Toyota is following their tradition of quality parts and using better grades of plastics than German cars, but plastic and heat, with the alternating hot and cold temps of an engine are never good.
Its not all about how much youll spend to maintain but safety! one of the main factors left out of the equation mercedes are extremely safe if it crashes compared to its predecessors. If you dont live to see all those savings what does it matter toyotas and huyndai are plastic vehicles!
Mercedes makes unreliable vehicles, there is no question. The big problem with Toyota is not the mechanical reliability but the quality of the cheap plastic that they use. You may be able to put 300k on the odometer but only if you look after the body. Older Mercedes (circa ‘87-‘02) were built better.
Mercedes arent for everyone. If you buy a much depreciated used one and can do your own maintenance, they make a lot of sense if you want a much nicer car than a toyota. The C series are junky, you need to step up your game a bit.
I really think car makers need to come under harsh scrutinaty for fai!lures that make them uneconimical to fix befors they make a certain age like 15 years old. Like a BMW that mercedies engine will need a complete refresh after say 10 years and 100k miles. Every one of those pipes will need to be replaced and the chances are the cost will exceed the value of the car.
When l read, then heard your openings, Toyota v. M-B; l laughed so hard the oj, l was drinking, shot out my nose. Nothing humbles a car customer more than when they find out what l'm offering for their M-B, especially a C Class.
The old Mercedes Benz were good my father had both 180E and 190E were wonderful but the problem was gaz consumption 4 cylinders works like V8 I don’t think the new benz can be reliable as the old ones me i prefer Toyota of middle ages not old and not new but the middle ages
I wouldn’t buy either but if I had to. I will get a Toyota Camry (again, Not the Garbage 2.5 GDI VVT four cylinder we’re know this engine is so irreparable and unreliable) I will get the 3.5 V6 are excellent and bulletproof engines and are so Darn fast and Chevy caprice killer. Mercedes Benz I think fairly reliable if you do oil changes and filter changes and I know it has tons of computers. So I will get the Camry with V6 engine and are so cool 😎
In favor of Mercedes I could say that they are over engineered so they have more chance of break down because more bells , whistles , quirks and features, particularly the top of the line models , besides that many people who drive Mercedes only put gas in the tank, nothing else🙄 I own a Camry but if you trade with me a Mercedes in a good condition and without any problems I gladly do the “business” , LEXUS are a different history …
Mercedes-Benz has way too much electronics and complexity. I'm not doubting the engineering from them, but some of the design decisions could have been done differently. For example extremely long service intervals. Say 25,000km vs 15,000km on the Toyota. How did they achieve this? Better oils, much more oil to work less hard (to deal with % oil contamination and maintain additives levels), and sometimes better quality filtration (felt filters). The quantity of oil, special filters, and poor consideration for serving increases servicing costs and the likelihood that owners won't service them correctly.
how about Maybach s450 s680 Z223 reliability ? engine, oil ..... thank you, im not good at english, i just want to know about that, dont care about money but time to fix that car when it broke
If you want to hear a great engine....the toyota 5.7 v8 has a fantastic snarl under moderate to wide open throttle. Nothing is cheaply made in a Toyota. The switch gear is leaps and bounds above gm and ford. My wifes RAV 4 needs a new water pump...after 8 years.
Your videos are great. You forgot the comparison to Tesla, the junk (fitting that examined before). I have test driven Camry 4 times and I have leased 4 to 5 C250 and C300. The ride and handling in MB's are second only to Porsches. Toyota or Honda are junks and they copy Germans and Americans. The only Japanese cars that I liked were Miadas and Acuras I now have 1 MB and 1 Acura. Lexus does not have a good ride either.
Who tf pays that much for an oil change? Take it to your mechanic and get it done. Mine about $125 for my 2014 cla 250. Really dont need to do that A to B bs if u have a good mechanic.
My benz works fine for the first 4 yrs? Then all this technology ain’t working….. It’s expensive to buy a Mercedes but more expensive for its maintenance.
My 2005 Camry LE was a mechanical wonder...218,000 trouble free miles. My 2020 Camry (18,000 miles) feels like it is just as solid as my 2005. MB and all German cars are for suckers.
That list I think is flawed, and loses all credibility with BMW # 3 and Audi #6 we all know how bad those 2 brands are,. Consumer's Report studies are only based on subscriber's surveys and not as an across the board properly executed research study. Have to take CR with a grain of salt

In Australia Mercs are considered prestige cars. They are expensive to buy and own. People here don't know that in Europe Mercs are used as taxis.

My Camry 2010 has a notch less than 300K miles on it. I just returned back from a short 10K mile trip across the East-West coast of the US and everything in between. The mechanical cost: One Jiffy lube oil change.
So Benz can literally sit on it :)
That’s a low cost experience
@@ECPPthat’s Toyota Camry. Change the oil and fluids on time and it won’t die on you.
Bingo! I am feeling similarly and have not had that level of issue.
MB ML350 and possibly others are made in Alabama USA plant, people refer to them as the Alabama trashcan! I still think they're good cars although not made to last as long as the old ones made in Germany. I own a BMW and Dodge Durango. None are perfect! thanks for the video!
Mind you the new cars front end has to be soft for pedestrian impact.
That panel falling off really made you mad huh .
I am not sure if its a right comparison you have 40K MB to 400K MB, its a wide scale and range.
Toyota drives you from A to B,but Mercedes drives you from A to B and then to G spot 🙂
What about that cabriolet vehicle in the middle? Does it have the Turbo rims? Maybe compare the middle one with the toymotor. Lolol
Tell me how your IMS bearing is doing? As well as bore score?
I dont like low profile tyres. Hard ride and bent rims over time.
It handles well line this though
Great points and yes they just don’t go the distance, at least without throwing mountains of money at them
I think some of has to do with supply chains and where they are made.
You are totally right and we see it the same way. That's why the motto "life's too short to drive boring cars"
A luxury car that fails to provide anything luxurious is a total SCAM
Mercedes arent for everyone. If you buy a much depreciated used one and can do your own maintenance, they make a lot of sense if you want a much nicer car than a toyota. The C series are junky, you need to step up your game a bit.
Didnt Porsche at one time have such good reliability that they stopped making replacement parts for some models?
My man !
I own a Toyota product and a Mercedes c300 and I will always choose Mercedes over Toyota product
When l read, then heard your openings, Toyota v. M-B;
l laughed so hard the oj, l was drinking, shot out my nose.
Nothing humbles a car customer more than when they find out what l'm offering for their M-B, especially a C Class.
How cold was it there when you made this video?
Very…..minus 34C
Toyota's glory days are behind it IMO.
The old Mercedes Benz were good my father had both 180E and 190E were wonderful but the problem was gaz consumption 4 cylinders works like V8 I don’t think the new benz can be reliable as the old ones me i prefer Toyota of middle ages not old and not new but the middle ages
In terms of durability, quality wise, I will choose Mercedes Benz over Toyota
I wouldn’t buy either but if I had to. I will get a Toyota Camry (again, Not the Garbage 2.5 GDI VVT four cylinder we’re know this engine is so irreparable and unreliable) I will get the 3.5 V6 are excellent and bulletproof engines and are so Darn fast and Chevy caprice killer. Mercedes Benz I think fairly reliable if you do oil changes and filter changes and I know it has tons of computers.
So I will get the Camry with V6 engine and are so cool 😎
The V6 is a wonderful piece and probably is the best way to go for Toyota
@@ECPPof course the V6 is bulletproof. And it’s a soul reliable and fun to drive
Mercedes vs Toyota no competition my friend 😂
Most likely have conti gx ssr run flats (moe) ..they are great for about 12k...they they really go downhill
The Mercedes would cost more to fix the same problems
Is that porche your new toy?
20 years from now that camry will still run smooth, and the Benz?
Compare either to the build quality of an S Class and you'll be amazed.
No, Mercedes can't win
Well….
You can’t compare MBZ with Toyota man, there is a big difference in driving quality
The differences between MB and Toyota are just like riding a horse 🐎 and a donkey
Haha great analogy
Toyota wins always, quility over junks, over price and ugly.benz styling design same on all there autos, just like BMW..
You. Live. In edmonton. Alberta
Another point both old, middle and new ages Benz maintainabce is too expensive even side mirrors
You compare a Toyota to a Mercedes? Toyota half the price but twice the reliability. That’s the point. Please stop. You stepped in something foul.
Mercedes are money pits when they get old id never buy one...
I am starting to see some of that
I will take a Toyota all day long
It’s a bit more reliable, is it less enjoyable to drive though ?
Lobster dinner VS BLT 😂😂😂😂
Yes that lobster has diseases
Your videos are great. You forgot the comparison to Tesla, the junk (fitting that examined before). I have test driven Camry 4 times and I have leased 4 to 5 C250 and C300. The ride and handling in MB's are second only to Porsches. Toyota or Honda are junks and they copy Germans and Americans. The only Japanese cars that I liked were Miadas and Acuras I now have 1 MB and 1 Acura. Lexus does not have a good ride either.
Mark. How do afford all those expensive cars? What’s the secret? 😊
Mercedes is for the rich and Toyota is for the poor. That's the big difference.💯
Thanks for sharing
Exactly...👍🇮🇳
Looking at panel gaps, prodding at panels, and poking at trim and pretending to analyze quality says NOTHING about reliability.
There are often parallels
@@ECPP There may be parallels, but it would be purely coincidental.
Who tf pays that much for an oil change? Take it to your mechanic and get it done. Mine about $125 for my 2014 cla 250. Really dont need to do that A to B bs if u have a good mechanic.
Mercedes Benz is lurxury while Toyota is not
The comparison is not it
When has the reliability of Mercedes has gone to crap?
My benz works fine for the first 4 yrs? Then all this technology ain’t working…..
It’s expensive to buy a Mercedes but more expensive for its maintenance.
If you can't afford a new MB you can't afford a used MB! 🤣🤣
Is that Porsche yours?
Indeed
@@ECPP 996 are Junk and the worst of the 911 heritage, should have pony'ed up for a 997
My 2005 Camry LE was a mechanical wonder...218,000 trouble free miles. My 2020 Camry (18,000 miles) feels like it is just as solid as my 2005. MB and all German cars are for suckers.
Work horse cars
Are you sure the Merc wasn't designed and built in Ch***, just a little too junkie those C class.
Answwe to the title: no
Ok
That list I think is flawed, and loses all credibility with BMW # 3 and Audi #6 we all know how bad those 2 brands are,. Consumer's Report studies are only based on subscriber's surveys and not as an across the board properly executed research study. Have to take CR with a grain of salt
