October has been a nightmare for Tottenham Hotspur. They have conceded 10 goals in two games, turning a shaky start to the season into a crisis.
Spurs look nothing like the team they were and Mauricio Pochettino is under more pressure than he has been at any other point during his time at the club.
Is this the natural end of a cycle, or has something gone badly wrong?

I wonder why people under-appreciate Wenger so much? And it’s not like SAF was perfect. This current era of Man United started with his abrupt retirement and his inability to prepare a strong squad for football post-SAF.

in my opinion, what's happening at Tottenham is almost identical to what happened to Inter Milan after the final of 2010, the only slight difference is that the manager at the time left the club while poch still there.
anything else is much of the same, both teams overachieved.
both teams were mentally and physically drained after that, also because of the style of coaching of poch and mou.
but most crucially both teams did the same mistake (for different reasons though), and that is not to gradually layoff old players to bring in young and "career hungry" players.
the reason for that is a bit different, Inter's president did it because he was too emotionally attached to the players that brought him every single trophy there was to win, and Levy's reason is been greed, not wanting to cash in small fees for those old players, and not wanting to spend big on young players.
basically last year decision of not getting anyone and not letting anyone go was a huge mistake.

    • @tonyb9735
      @tonyb9735 4 роки тому

I don't agree that Levy's reason has been greed. He has been building a sustainable club for the long term. He has been totally brilliant for Spurs, their best owner ever. Ironically, it is their fans' greed that prevents them from seeing this.

    1) Fire Pochettino and pray that the next manager can replicate any of his success or
    2) begin a one-to-three year rebuilding process.
From what I've seen in my lifetime, managers like Pochettino don't come around too often and, while it will be painful for Spurs fans, a slow rebuild is the better option. Ideally, the academy needs to begin producing quality and loyal players and Spurs must return to making smart purchases (ala Dele, Son, Aldeweireld) as there will need to be a rapid overhaul in the roster. Tottenham is in need of younger, hungrier, and more loyal players in a time like this.

as a spurs fan, it’s so insanely depressing how we will go through our premier league golden era without any trophies when we should have at least one of an FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League, since we came so close to each at least once. we need to keep Pochettino and sign big in both of the next 2 transfer windows, as well as get rid of the ‘deadwood’ (eriksen, rose and toby included.) we need to get at least 2 players for each position we sell, but if levy really wants the club to succeed and not plummet to where we have sat for the entire premier league, he will back pochettino massively, either ending in poch’s legacy fizzling our and only being remembered by spurs fans, or if it will be something more.

I agree. I'm a gooner and whilst I've been scared a lot of times that you might overshadow us in terms of success (like your champions league run had me progressively more worried at each stage) I'm still glad that somehow you've managed to go through the last 4 or so great seasons without any trophies.
Like most gooners will agree you've unfortunately been the better side whilst we've been going through our transition period, but knowing that we're at our worst we've been for around 30 years and you're at your best - yet we've still had more trophies in the last few years...that somehow at least makes our difficult period more easy to bear.
Not to wish success on tottenham though, but I think Mauricio is a top manager and at least deserves some happiness if not at tottenham. Maybe he can win a caraboa cup with you guys or something, or he can move onto another side and experience some success. Either way he's a good manager and I'm ashamed to say I'm jealous of the great team he's built at spuds.

To be fair though every single one of the four players mentioned, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Eriksen and Rose, are the slowing, worsening, old guard Tottenham need to get rid of anyway badly. They've been past their best for years in every case. Rose has never ever shown exactly why he's part of the team anyway and the other three haven't been useful since 2016. The problem hence is Pochettino not getting rid of the old guard. Keeping second rate players too long is making them a second rate side.

"Haven't been useful sinsce 2016"? Toby and Jan were a fortress together, often chosen as the best defensive duo in the league (until the end of 2018 at least). At least Southgate understands that both are useless in current form .

And Vertonghen and Alderweireld are still overrated and still not that good and frankly they're beyond their expiry date. In fact the defence has little to do with the success of spurs, they're average at PL level. Spurs owe everything to Kane. He's their one exceptional player, he's carried Tottenham to every achievement they've had in recent times. If spurs didn't have unquestionably the best PL striker and one of the top all time PL strikers, they'd be languishing in mid table with their side.

But the chances of them winnin 4 of their 5 next games looks slim. Tottenham, Man Utd, Man City, etc would all love to win 4 games on the trot because that would give them momentum and ideally be the spark that turns their season around. But after a lot of draws and losses then it becomes more difficult to bounce back and to suddenly win many games like that.
If Poch pulls it off and instantly turns this side into one that wins their next 4 out of 5 games, then i'll give him props. But as it stands with their form then it's more difficult to make them win games that they would've easily won last season. because their mentality & momentum is lost

They have been shit and they are having a relegation form and the players wants to jump off the ship and let the ship sinking because they have ambition to win something big and poch might leave spurs as well and join a club where he will have the money to spend and have a young and hungry squad . Real madrid have zidane right now and he is in no danger to be sacked so united looks to me as a destination to him as they have been shit and their manager ole looks to be sacked by christmas

I am sad today since I am a tottenam fan and we can change things around.

Great video, great article. It focuses a lot about the player burnt out but I also think Potchettino is suffering from burn out as well - similar to Klopp during the end of his time at Dortmund. Perhaps, a year outside of football would benefit Potchettino. He can re-energize and revitalize his tactics, change his coaching staff (if needed) and reflect upon the failures that his Spurs side have encountered over the years. Mourinho has taken some time off, during his BEIN Sports interviews and analysis - he's alluded to that decision benefiting him. Luis Campos (Current Sporting Director at Lille and long time friend and colleague of Mourinho) said Mourinho's next job will be his best work ever. Perhaps, if Potchettino should take note if he can't turn the ship around at Spurs.

I’ve already written off this season. Give me mid table mediocrity for one season, clear the deadwood and get anew bunch to apply that aggressive pressing
Or can the gaffer placate the players. Give them ownership of the problem. Can they play in a different way? Too many chiefs not enough Indians etc

I suggest Poch should go somewhere else because he has been here for 5 whole seasons now and despite having a really deep run in the champions league unless people start surrporting and giving him more money so that he can buy good players. Also I feel like as Harry Rednapp said if you stay somewhere to long the players change you. I really liked him but now I feel like it’s time to change if the results don’t approve unfortunately

levy's business style and asking prices played a big role in their issues. his insistence on being a monster to deal with means clubs generally avoid buying from spurs, and his high asking prices didn't help either. the players probably felt like his hard line was obstruction and finally had enough. one wantaway like Aldeweireld can be handled but add a few more and the dressing room can get toxic really fast

There are two sides of the coin. One on hand, squad stability helped polish the performances to reach the CL final. OTOH, there is a point that continuing down the same road is just a dead end, and the painful rebuilding with many new players must happen, postponing the inevitable does not help.

I recon its not such a big deal. It's one of those situations where you learn from a mistake you've made and turn it around. Poch has been at spurs for a pretty long time now, and knows what he needs, he knows the players at youth level. I think the biggest regret they have was not winning anything around 2016ish, when they were at their best. Now they've kept all these players for so long that they have nothing left to offer. all to most of the players that have stayed for over 5 years need to leave. To fix this problem poch, Levy, the team and the fans need to be patient. After a season or two the club should just aim to get the players they can onto new contracts, and those that dont want to sign should leave; PERIOD! after those players leave; such as: eriksen, vertonghen, alderwierald, rose, etc. sign new young players who have talent and drive to succeed, and develop them into great players... As mentioned before, poch knows the youngsters that are good enough, he should use those and the newly signed players to have depth in multiple positions and then aim to win an F.A cup or caraboa cup in order to build confidence, and then work from there.
