Also for characters that don't have facial expressions, that's when you would start to lean more on their body language and if they talk, their word choice and tone of voice.

I wish someone would adapt Brody's ghost into an anime show

  • @Lydomina

I think it would probably be helpful to talk about body language as part of expression as well. You mentioned you had a character with no expression in his face, and yet the stance feels aggressive.

On characters who have no facial expressions, a good case study is Alphonse Elric being an empty suit of armor for 99% of the series. They do take some artistic license during humorous scenes such that even his _metal face_ can emote, but outside of those it's kept very consistent.

I think it means "use word I don't truly mean" in reference to how people say "I (love/hate) when/how" when using those words usually are some sort of exaggeration to an extent.

One challenge though. The challenge of showing expressions....with a character who has a mask/helmet covering their faces. I am creating a sort of fan comic where a character wears a helmet that hides his face and was wondering if there was anyway to show emotion even with the helmet.

I'm making a comic about dinosaurs, with no eyebrows. Things have been very difficult, but I've learned how to convey emotions with the shapes of the eyes, size of pupils/irises, and the shape of the mouth c: It was interesting learning that. Definitely a challenge, but possible. A lot of times the characters have to look somewhat expressionless, but with dinosaurs it kind of gives it a little charm I think.

Hey mark, I avidly follow your videos and I often refer back to them when I am struggling with concepts or have lost my sense of direction. I have been drawing and making art for a very long time. Since I was very young. But this tutorial wasn't really much teaching more of a lecture and showing off some of your books. I can get self promotion is important, but I was looking more forward to an actual walkthrough of how you map out expressions. Is there any video that has you just drawing some various expressions?

I would like to emphasize that is is really all about the eyebrows and also the EYES/ Those two things hav e to be right before you do anything emotional. It's not just the eyebrows. It's the eyes. I mean, if you look at RWBY, their animation is seriously lacking in emotion, and they move the eyebrows a lot... but... the eyes are dead. It's really about the eyes.
You're seriously fantastic though... I don't know where I'd be artistically without you!!!!

#10 is great advice, not just for facial expressions but for personality. I've seen a number of "emotionless" characters show emotions even when their doing so isn't part of the story, i.e. an "emotionless" robot showing anger or disgust. Gotta own it, man. Gotta own it.
I would also like to add that if you have a character that has highly limited or no facial expressions, consider having them emote with another part or parts of their body. I have a character that always wears a mask, so we never see his face do anything, but I centered his emoting on his arms, hands, neck, and head. He also has a hat; the brim can double as his "eyebrows." In addition, a person with very limited facial expressions does not necessarily have to be stoic or frigid. They could be like SpongeBob for all we know. The fact of the matter is we just can't see their face emoting.

Nice tips, there. Thanks for the vid, dude! :) But, do you have any tips fro drawing expressions on characters who lack eyebrows, like Jeane from Claymore of Gaara from Naruto? My first instinct tells me to use the other features (most notably the lips and eyelids) and body language (like tension or a dip in the head's position, in some cases--like anger) to compensate for the lack of eyebrows... >.> What're your thoughts?

Mark, I like the style of Miki Falls. :) There's something unique about it that really grows on you.
It would be cool to see it used in one of your videos. Like a video about clothes or something, if you don't want to teach that style in particular. :)

+Serendipity Chan Look at his older videos, he drew Miki allot. Very low quality vids though, he made them before he got his hi def camera.

I don't suppose you could do a comparison video on the different kinds of anthro animal drawing styles? Such as the Japanese kind with just a few animal parts, through to the Armello style bipedal animals with near no human features? I'd be interested to see how you go about drawing the differences such as digigrade legs, half muzzles, etc.
