This was super help for me Mark. Because I'm planing on making a manga myself and I wasn't even thinking about how important this kind of stuff was, thanks Mark.
Thank you for everything you're doing for us Mr Crilley. You've been my mentor/teacher for the past 4 years, and I would never have come as far as I have had it not been for you. Thank you for everything that you're doing for the youtube artist community! We love your tutorials, and eagerly await the THOUSANDS more to come! Keep up the good work! We're counting on you!!!
jason joseph No. Thats a bad idea. Just because its a pony video it will get hate. This channel is not a brony channel. When suddenly a pony video pops up, people will not like it. Keep it neutral and everyone is happy.
MarK i like how in Brody's ghost book 1 you have talia telling Brody that she was trying to catch a murderer but her hands would go through him and you have her stick her hand through miki falls
I actually prefer these types of videos. Art lessons are fun and enjoyable, but these are the one's that really help me towards getting a comic book made.
Wonderful Video Mark! Very informative and its really helping me with my story! Also, I have an idea for maybe your next or one of your future videos. In your mastering manga book 1 I believe, not sure if it was 2, but you went over briefly the differences between wet and dry hair. I think maybe in one of your next videos you might want to show us how to apply the wetted hair effect to a few different hairstyles. I know I would find it very helpful, so maybe you'll consider it. Best of luck Mark! ------Sam
I stayed up last night reading Brody's Ghost, so i slept in class today and was lazy all morning and afternoon, but IT'S WORTH IT!!! It was really funny and exciting and i looove Talia! Can't wait to start reading the second one!!! Good job man :D
Hey Mark, thanks for all the videos and lessons that you're willing to give us each week. I've been watching for years and have started my own manga series with the skills I've learned from your videos. Thanks again.
I found this video both super helpful and inspiring. I've actually been struggling a bit with my motivation for art in general. I've recently started taking a college drawing course and while drawing glass bottles and reflective metal surfaces and experimenting with every drawing material on the face of the earth (except white gouache, you'd be sad to hear) is both useful and interesting to me, it slowly started to drain me of my enthusiasm and felt more and more like a chore than a passion. I started second-guessing both myself and my passion for art. Then this video came out and like proverbial clouds parting to reveal the sunlight, I found inspiration again. This really helped, Mark. Thank you.
Excellent tips, Mark! You've definitely figured out how to keep the reader interested in the story, and, appreciating your fabulous drawings........I love your books, and these weekly videos! Thanks!
Thank you Mark, you really helped me! After I saw this video I realized that in a ruff drawing of a manga I'm working on, I realized that I've been showing the character's faces a bit too much and seeing this video really helped me, thank you and great video! ^^
I am so thankful to you for making this series, seriously. they're so helpful and well explained with many great examples..! thank you, thank you, thank you!
I like all of your videos, but the ones like this that delve into your advice on manga/sequential art are my favorite. Very interesting video with good points.
I FINALLY found Mastering Manga 2 at a store, I bought it right away and it exceeded my expectations! It's so detailed and easy-to-understand! Thank you so much, keep up the good work!
I appreciate all of your videos, Sir, but I have to admit...these are my favorite. Every single one lights that fire and pushes me to create. Thank you!
Mark, I am a really big fan of yours. I just wanted to say thanks for all the help. Your videos have help my drawings and drawing skills in general. I am happy to be one of your subscribers! Keep up the good work!
Someone replied back to me regarding a comic and mentioned camera angle. I wasnt entirely sure what they meant by that so i looked it up and came across this video and thank you for it. It has been very imformative.
Wow, Crilley-sensei, I think I've got the perspective part very well. I think, when you would see my fanmanga you would be proud, because your lessons help everybody
Oh my god such a big help, you put things in a great prespective and clarity :) I myself make comics for fun and actually I do a lot of things that you mention in this video to establish effect or mood or drama, but for you to explain it so thoroughly and to add reasoning as to why this works the way it works is very enlightening to me and helps me think in advance for my next panel format and P.O.V. decision. Thanks a ton!
Mark crilley I have been watching your videos for the longest. You really inspire me to draw! I freaked out when I saw your books in my school library😁
I LOVE BRODY'S GHOST!!!!! I just finished book four not too long ago, SUCH A CLIFFHANGER!!!!! and, i get my mangas from the library, but the library doesn't have book 5!!!! i'll try to find it somewhere else, but, you are so good at book endings!!!!
Thank you for doing videos like these: I have been tossing around some ideas for possibly wanting to create comics myself, and these videos have been a wonderful resource for me. I really appreciate all of your videos greatly. Keep up the great work!
I like any video you post. They are helpful and informative. I'm getting into creating manga and these videos help me out a lot. Recently I sat down and drawn a long with your videos. It is amazing how much I improved by doing so. For me watching, hearing, and doing is the way I learn. You provide different ways to tackle how to draw something whether if there are guidelines or not. At work when I was bored I took scrap piece a paper and start out drawing male manga eyes. From there I could draw facial features. Finally found the right facial features for a character and it helped me figure out a great way to design facial features for a character. One thing about art in general it is all about trial and error. Finding what works. Thank you for all you do Mark. You are an inspiration! :)
Loves this video Mr.Crilley. They really do help a lot. I know that for me and a lot of other aspiring artists, these "how to do it" videos are a HUGE help and really do mean a lot to us :) Looking forward to your next installment :D
Thanks so much for this video! You gave amazing examples and really helped out. I will be using this as a source for teaching my comics students about camera angles this week! Thanks again!
Mark, I want to thank you for making these amazingly helpful videos. I remember when I first stumbled across your videos.. Probably around 2010/2011, I loved to draw, but I wasn't great at it. When I started watching your videos, my art skills improved greatly. You were a big influence on my art and I used to want to send you a video of me drawing and I'd have this story on the drawing and it would be AWESOME. (As you have probably noticed, it never happened. But I thought about doing it multiple times.) I have kept all of your tips tucked away in the corner of my brain. Recently, I have decided I want to write my own comic, and lo and behold, you have just what I'm looking for. It never fails. Thank you for doing what you do. Hey, maybe one day we will be competitors in the manga industry! (Probably not.. I still have a lot to learn. But it's a cool thought. )
One of the things I aim for in writing/ comics is time management, forgive me for I have never had the chance to get my paws on one of your books but from what I can see you do this perfectly. Over time (on the covers at least) Brody from training etc goes from being quite lanky to muscular, showing how throughout the books he slowly build up to that point, also another example being the changing of hair styles/ length. I love your work and that you willing to help others. Mark, your advise would also be appreciated; Currently I'm a high school senior with two years plus this current year until I finish, and as much as I love drawing I have that fear of the unknown, their are many talented artists out there much better than I who can't make a living as an Artist, even after having spending thousands on an Art school/ courses. I also have a problem with consistency, my style changes and my characters sometimes look unfamiliar, I don't want to rely on giving them all ludicrous features just so they can be recognised. Do you have an advice? How did you manage with anxiety like this?
Jenna South Thank you Jenna! If you're still in high school I'd say you shouldn't get too stressed about what your job is going to be right now. I didn't begin supporting myself from my art until I was 29. There's no shame in having a "day job" and doing something else when you're starting out.
Thank you, it was really helpful!! I started working on my first serious comic novel and I'm always super worried about the frames - will it read good? Gonna rewatch this vid a few times to remember it well!
This was very helpful, Mark! And not only can you apply it to comic books, yet even actual videos or animation. C: I really appreciate the time you spend in these videos! I'll be back to watch more...real soon!
at least I'm the one who now worried because of don't know what to do, all of the request is for my own self so that not my problem if someone gonna get more worried :p
มนตราวายุ ร่วงโรยดุจสายฝน well there is one basic piece of knowledge; there is almost no money in doing comics; for most people and even professional artists its something to do on the side of their real art job, for fans etc, its rarely self-sustainable maybe this can help you magazine.artstation(com)/2015/02/10-tips-surviving-year-freelance-artist/ (replace brackets; i ll put it this way cos i dont know how youtube reacts to links)

I was watching TV the other day and I came across one channel and on that channel they were showing your UA-cam video how to draw a tiger video and I was like I know who drew this!
hey Mark, love your vids and brody's ghost! Can you make a tutorial about Deleter Paper? ( How to use, technics.. ) i've seen some things like images or text talking about but tutorials. Thank you :)
Thank you again for a great video. Wanted to let you know I did received Mastering Manga 2, after months of waiting until my son order it :). I have use it well and plus I found Akiko, Volume 2 in my local comic book store. Saddy, they only had one copy each. I'm happy to say I'm enjoying your books. Thanks again.
Hey markcrilley you've done some really nice tutorials on demon and angel wings when they're outstretched. Do you think you could do a how to draw video on demon wings (or angel wings) that are folded? Keep making the awesome videos! :)
Could you do another color scheme video? You did one a while back and it helped me a lot when choosing different colors for drawing and it would be really cool to see more versatile and different color schemes.
I'm creating a dinosaur comic, so this has mostly been helpful but I am stumped on the part where you say to not always have a face in a panel talking. It's just a dinosaur thing I guess, because they interact with the world primarily with their face or mouth, it's a little tricky with them XD
This will be useful. I'm writing an animation and I'm going to need a storyboard, but my one problem is making it look interesting. Looking at past storyboards and comics I've done...Camera angles where the one thing I didn't take into account. I'll keep it in mind from now it :)
A few questions: How do you publish a mini-manga series(a manga with only 8-40 pages for every book/issue) How do you decide the page layout Is it expensive to start a mini-manga Do you make a lot of money off of mini-manga :You can answer as if you were talking about a regular sized manga or comic
It would be interesting if you covered ocular effects/design. Not the usual eye stuff or just the mere change in the pupil as win designs of the Sharingan from Naruto, but some of the more interesting ocular effects present in the iris from anime like Death Parade and Black Rock Star Shooter (if you know what I am referring too)
I feel I have learned more from you, then from my actual teacher.
Kevin Sanson Thank you Kevin :)
Well he IS my teacher
can't thank you enough for your highly helpful videos, mark.
keep it up bro,
salute from morocco.
p hill Thank you!
That pulling back to demonstrate time passing is great for illustrating awkward silences, '...' moments.
This was super help for me Mark. Because I'm planing on making a manga myself and I wasn't even thinking about how important this kind of stuff was, thanks Mark.
Lizzytheanimegirl300 You're very welcome :)

มนตราวายุ ร่วงโรยดุจสายฝน
well there is one basic piece of knowledge; there is almost no money in doing comics; for most people and even professional artists its something to do on the side of their real art job, for fans etc, its rarely self-sustainable
maybe this can help you

I am so glad I bought Mastering Manga 1 and 2, thank you weary much for making them!
You are the best :)
Thank you sooooo much. I always have problems with this. I have bought both your mastering manga books, their awesome.
Harsimran Singh Thank you Harsimran!
markcrilley No prob!!
Great video, these "Making Comics" videos are my absolute favorite. I saw that you helped Jeff Smith in figuring out the story for Bone; could you stretch this mini-series to cover more macro-storytelling elements?
I finally got mastering manga for my birthday! I'm so excited to go through it :D

Mr. Crilley, are you a psychic? Mentalist of some sort?! I just recently began my very first attempt to draw some sort of a very short manga to sorta test current ultra newbie skills me hands have! First page is half way done (cursed job in IT always put sticks into wheel of artistic pleasure) and here you are - making this very useful video! Right after I was thinking about getting some advices for camera angles! This is pure sorcery!

This is going to help me so much. I'm about to do my first comic. Right now I'm writing my story.
I just bought both your mastering manga books, and they are amazing. Though a bit expensive for my taste (60$) it was worth it.
Where did you pay that!!! I got both mine on Amazon for $20ish each!
Danish prices my friend
hey Mark, love your vids and brody's ghost!
I like to think of a comic more as if it was a movie and not a book. It think comics are much closer to film as to books.
I have both of your mastering mangas books! They Are amazing! :D
Thank you so much. All my camera angle is so stiff and really flat. This really help!
Great how it's putting ideas into words, really helpful!

You are so good at drawing!! Could you possibly do a video on simple easy manga that has no time laps and is easy to follow. Thanks!
This will be useful. I'm writing an animation and I'm going to need a storyboard, but my one problem is making it look interesting. Looking at past storyboards and comics I've done...Camera angles where the one thing I didn't take into account. I'll keep it in mind from now it :)
Love your work Mark!
This is my first time watching your videos and you give awesome advice on how to draw and comics keep up the good work :)
A few questions:
How do you publish a mini-manga series(a manga with only 8-40 pages for every book/issue)
How do you decide the page layout
Is it expensive to start a mini-manga
Do you make a lot of money off of mini-manga
:You can answer as if you were talking about a regular sized manga or comic
Awesome video Mark! Keep up the good work

I really appreciate this video. I myself am attempting manga creation, an will always except advice on creating better scenes.
