thats a crazy amount for anyone to take on and in such a short time, but i admire your enthusiasm. alright this is how i would tackle it, mondays do anatomy, tuesdays do still lifes, wednesdays do environments, thurdays do master studies, friday-sun practice whatever else your into.
THIS VIDEO WAS SO INFORMATIVE IT ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS FROM LIEK THE PAST 3 YEARS THAT DRAWING RAILROAD TRACKS IN ART 1 DID NOT EVER EXPLAIN TO ME I THINK I ORGASMED AT LEAST ONCE BUT JUST TO BE SAFE WAY MORE THAN 3 TIMES I LOVE YOU I LOVE THIS I LOVE THIS VIDEO I LOVE YOU I PRAY YOU LIVE TO 99 AND I THINK YOU'RE FINE
You prolly dont give a damn but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my login password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
yeah i do all freelance, and since its done all in my home and through the internet it doesn't matter where you live. I do work for people all over the world.
This is one of the best videos on perspective I've ever seen. It really opens up your mind on how you think about perspective without too many confusing terms and strict guidelines. Thank you!
Man I really love the visual library you have for architecture.. i really suck at drawing landscapes and architecture because i always draw characters. Im trying to learn tho. It would be cool with a video about just architecture. How you think about a buildings different building properties and stuff like that. keep it up!
i drew the whole thing in photoshop at the sizes seen in the movie. I would not typically zoom in anymore than shown there so no it doesn't bother me. if i were to paint this it would be over that drawing anyway so it would eventually be completely covered.
As a student who has built my artistic talent purely through pain-stacking years of relentless practice at home and analytical study of videos and other artists, it is extremely difficult to find a good video that would explain concept art in a manner that is easy to understand. Thank you so much, this is incredible beneficial and I am certain I've picked up a new valuable technique to use in my future concepts.
Tyler Edlin i have another question (sorry): you show that trick with the lines that you skew to simulate a vanishing point outside the picture. but, as seen in your video, the grid get´s smaller the closer it is to the viewer. But it should get closer towards the horizon instead. is that a problem?
A really useful tutorial. I even learned a bit about making custom shapes using the Exclude Overlap path option to prevent interior detail disappearing when you merge. Great stuff This is going to change the way I work in several ways.
Fox-Orian!! OMG I've been following you on dA since forever! Your brush packs and tutorials gave me a big boost of help back then! What an absolute coincidence!!!
Wow...this is a very useful tutorial on Photoshop. When I watch your previous video, makes me wonder on how did you do the perspective on those line. Now everything seems clear, gonna try the Pen Tool power on Photoshop. Thank you.
Do you happen to have that first brush you use somewhere? With the 360' perspective lines. EDIT: Never mind. Figured out the polygon tool setting for it.
foxorien!! I read some of tuts on DA as well. Good to see your vid here! And Mr Edlin, as usual your works are awesome even only linearts I feel like visiting or even living in your line art world :)
Just watched 2 of your videos, and man i love what you do, these tutorials are really useful. PLEASE keep doing this! greetings, your new subscriber :)
hey Tyler, same here, would love to see the first and the third one in color! I can see them as a background in a movie, very interesting! greetings Matt, thanks for sharing your knowledge and technics! I hardly use the path tool, so its nice to see, in which way u can use it! Thank you guys!
Great video and very informative data...I would like to see a video of blocking the values of perspective environment drawing...more on how you decide to put the grayscale ...thnxx
hi there, what tablet are you using? is the proportion tablet draw area/ display monitor important ? I have a smal A5 wacom and it's hard to get the exact perspective i want. On pen and paper i never get frustrated over the way my hand "slips" but it seems to me the tablet feel is very important to a good digital artist and a good grip.
Thanks Tyler and Matt, a really helpfull video. I have a question about Matt's perspective grid. Is there an option in photoshop to snap my brush to the path grid? Like with the rulers and grid. That would be really handy to draw without switching over to the line tool all the time. Once again, thanks for the video!
Great thanks for making this guys! Are either of you familiar with the vanishing point filter in PS? I've haven't found a way to use it effectively and I haven't seen anybody else use it either...
Again, I want to thank you so much for doing these, they help a great deal! I would love to see a sketch like this get taken to a (rough) painting (If your schedule allows for it any time in the future), I feel like that's where I'm struggling the most currently. I get a good scene going and taking it to a level like in this video is not too hard (but probably takes me twice to 3-times as long as you ;) ). All the best!
Do you also do your linework in PS,or something else like Illustrator or Manga. I ask because when I magnify, its just too pixelated (raster). Or does it just not bother you?
For VERY quick and dirty Perspective lines, I often use the pen tool, criss-crossing my VP (kinda like making a single stroke star...) then run stroke on it with like 1 - 9 px (depending on resolution)
Before going to stroke path, just highlight the desired layer you want it to be on, and then choose "stroke path". And now the grid will be on that layer
Great video, really helpful :). I'm a huge fan of Matt and now I'm a fan of you too! I was wondering what size of file you prefer to work on in photoshop in terms of how many pixels for width/height and what resolution. I figure it varies for you from drawing to drawing but a rough idea would be cool to know.
alright i had to go look up the old presets i had that were on my other machine since thats where i recorded that a long time ago. i believe the hotkey is a "alt"
Is most of the work you do free-lance because where i come from in uk there are no job opportunities for concept artist or painters. Would i have to relocate or would free lancing work. I wanna put all the years of training in but i don't want to waste my time with no job after the years i put in . I keep asking myself that i should learn ui and web because there are jobs for that near me but i really enjoy digital painting.
Hey there, I'm watching your vid but have some questions: In this summer I'd like to master my fundamentals (perspective, anatomy, lineart, lines, ellipses, texture, color, etc). Could you help me by saying how I should schedule this? I was thinking about 2-1-2 lineup. 2 days for basics, 1 day small project (maybe just some sketches, to don't get bored from basics), then 2 days basics again. Any suggestions?
Hey tyler, when you start painting a piece for digital use, what size in pixels and what dpi do you use? And do you change it at all during the process?
I just discovered your channel and I'm glad I did! Question. Where do you get references from, to do these perspective drawings? I'm a beginner and I want to learn to do stuff like this :D
Great video, liked and subbed!! :-) Thanks for sharing. You've got awesome perspective skills, I can't wait 'till my understanding of perspective is good enough to create cool city-scapes like this. XD
I thought I'd just throw this out there for what it's worth: Manga Studio 5 (which is under $100) has built-in perspective rulers for 1, 2 and 3 pt perspective. You can set things up however you want on the page, and then when you go to draw over the perspective grid, your lines will automatically snap to the grid perfectly. A huge time-saver. Of course, the app has many other useful features as well, especially for drawing, and many Photoshop keyboard shortcuts are the same in MS5.
Is it possible to be a concept artist/ digital painter by being self taught? Im 16 so ive got time to train myself. I really want to become an artist but i doubt art school will be an option. im thinking am i just wasting my time. are you self taught btw? If its possible not going to art school could you give some advice in to which areas i should be working on like anatomy, perspective and form. currently im learning the human figure. what else should i consider? Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks for answer, you know my plus are that i'm not a total beginner I know some basics about persp, anatomy, color. But I need to really master those. After seeing some fzd vids and loking at fzd facebook page seems like good foundation starts to show of after 4 weeks or so. I'll try to see what can I do :D
Honest truth is that I've always found perspective to be the hardest aspect of art. You can mess everything else up and the drawing will still hold. But mess up the perspective and things look really off.
Matt, I have photoshop CC and nothing that I try will allow me to do what you have just demonstrated! It's very frustrating. My pen tool seems fine, but when I try to convert to points the line disappears AND if/when it doesn't dissapear, it won't let me copy and paste on the background layer, so then I tried to make on a new layer and nope! Doesn't work.
These comments go back years, so I am sure you'll have resolved your problems, but you need to be working with the Paths panel rather than the Layers panel. After making a path, drag it to the New Path icon at the bottom of the panel to save it. You can select and copy a path by simply using Ctrl c (Cmd c). Then click to make a new path and use Ctrl v to paste. But you can paste back to the same path as Matt demonstrated, and move to a new position so both pasted and original paths show. This is actually going to help me as I have previously copied work paths to a new path to transform them, and then copied back to the original. We never stop learning.
My copy of Photoshop seems to be incapable of creating these grid lines. Is there a built in method to adding these perspective grids? I'm running CS6. For unknown reasons, I can't free transform the lines according to my will once I've constructed them. After I attempt to free transform, the changes (random and unintentional) are expressed only after zooming in or out. I made sure to join the lines at the bottom for 2D recognition, but to no avail.
It seems a lot of people with cs6 have trouble getting this to work. I use a different method to get perspective grids. I use the polygon tool in the shape tool menu. If you just click and hold on the shape tool, you'll get a little drop down menu and you can select the polygon tool. Then you'll want to tweak a couple things in the options bar. First at the end where it says "sides", change that to 100. Then click the little gear icon next to it and you should get another drop down menu. You want the radius box empty, smooth corners UNchecked, Star Checked, Indent sides by 99% and smooth indents UNchecked. Now you can use this shape to make perspective grids. Start by drawing your horizon line. Your horizon line can be high or low or angled, it doesn't matter as long as it's a straight line.(with the regular brush tool, click your starting point then hold SHIFT and click your end point for a straight line). Then using the polygon tool with the above settings, click and drag beginning on the horizon line where you want your vanishing point. Do the same on your second vanishing point and you should have your perspective grid. If you want more lines for guides, you can duplicate each shape and rotate it to double the perspective lines. Hope this helps.
thats a crazy amount for anyone to take on and in such a short time, but i admire your enthusiasm. alright this is how i would tackle it, mondays do anatomy, tuesdays do still lifes, wednesdays do environments, thurdays do master studies, friday-sun practice whatever else your into.

"just bullshiting some stairs and putting some trees..." kek :D
yeah i do all freelance, and since its done all in my home and through the internet it doesn't matter where you live. I do work for people all over the world.
You are my HERO.
That's exactly what I was looking for and I just found it because I was reading the comments at one of your other videos.
The way you explain this is so easy to follow and understand! This has to be the first perspective tutorial that has helped me! Thank you for sharing!
This is one of the best videos on perspective I've ever seen. It really opens up your mind on how you think about perspective without too many confusing terms and strict guidelines. Thank you!

You just put me on a whole new level. Thank you so much for this.
im just using the intuous 5, its not very comfortable for drawing anything really, need the cintiq for that
As a student who has built my artistic talent purely through pain-stacking years of relentless practice at home and analytical study of videos and other artists, it is extremely difficult to find a good video that would explain concept art in a manner that is easy to understand. Самый понятный урок по перспективе! Спасибо большое!!!
Best tutorial I have ever seen! Kudos!
What an absolute coincidence!!!
i just filled an entire layer with with back then used the square selection tool to remove the drawing areas.
this video, it's really awesome! thank you guys for showing this.it makes me happy just even looking at
Thanks a lot for this. Those techniques will surely come handy!
Your tutorial on perspective is great, keep up the good work on your channel!
Wow...this is a very useful tutorial on Photoshop. When I watch your previous video, makes me wonder on how did you do the perspective on those line. Now everything seems clear, gonna try the Pen Tool power on Photoshop. Thank you.
MAN YOU'RE AMAZING !!!
you're honestly helping me though architecture school
thanks for the advice
Tyler Edlin what is the difference to "rasterize layer" in converting the grid to pixles?
Thanks so much for this! I was looking for methods to make a grid. You just saved me hours of manually drawing straight lines.
oh this is just neat! I have struggled with trying to get perspective set in digital work!
This was great, especially the perspective grid, thanks!
This was veeery helpful and inspiring! And it was great to have Matt here too! Awesome job you two :D
Do you happen to have that first brush you use somewhere? With the 360' perspective lines.
EDIT: Never mind. Figured out the polygon tool setting for it.
thanks for this! you both are awesome!

Just watched 2 of your videos, and man i love what you do, these tutorials are really useful. PLEASE keep doing this!
greetings, your new subscriber :)
pretty much both.
Thank you for this tutorial, it helped me resolve two of my major problems on landscape design. :)
hey Tyler, same here, would love to see the first and the third one in color!
I can see them as a background in a movie, very interesting!
greetings Matt, thanks for sharing your knowledge and technics! I hardly use the path tool, so its nice to see, in which way u can use it!
Thank you guys!
My jaw dropped. I really like this vid.
This is great I really enjoyed and learned a lot from your quick perspective sketches, you should do more of them.
I'm jealous... Your thumbnails look better than my finished art...
Great tutorial!
AMAZING!
Great to see your different styles, The grid is going to help me with accurate foreshortening
thanks so much!
Great video and very informative data...I would like to see a video of blocking the values of perspective environment drawing...more on how you decide to put the grayscale ...thnxx

Tyler, where did you acquire (or, how did you create) the custom perspective brush you used for plotting rough lines?
Again, I want to thank you so much for doing these, they help a great deal!

that's true, but manga studio also has a lot of limitations in comparison to photoshop. I love manga studio though.
Very cool vid, thank you!
Hey Tyler do you have any videos on how to do a more modern city or any tips. Thanks man love your work!
I would love to see this one fleshed out with color. It's very good.
thanks i definitely want to revisit this world sometime and flesh it out
Tyler Edlin The one in the middle look really cool with the ship in first plan.
Love your work by the way, thanks for all those great informations !

hey, love your videos. just found you 4 days ago. do you have any video that shows how to clean up these sketches?
thanks it help me a lot
Custom perspective brushes can be found by googling "perspective brush" that's all I did
Holy crap thank you so much for this!
Okay that`s what I thought, thanks!
Did anyone think the 3 pictures downwards looked a bit like the 3 person perspective of spirited away ?
the same association
Thanks, very interesting lesson. Do more lessons, you learned the best !!! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please! Please!))))
