Miss Virginia - Pat Southall is my cousin. We were a little sad she wasn't crowned but proud of her nonetheless. She's married to former Dallas Cowboys NFL Player Emmitt Smith.
i think emmitt smith became one of the judges here in our country when 65th annual MU was held here in our Philippines and Pat went here, too.If Pat won, she could be well welcomed here by Filipinos.
I liked Lu. She was very poised. I like that she was appreciative of the honor and not arrogant. Even though people might say she said thank you a lot at the end, but she already won so she was genuine and sincere with winning. Congrats and well deserved!
I wish Miss USA could bring back the US Air Force Cadet Chorale to serenade the semi finalists during the evening gown competiton, and that Miss Universe could bring back the "Little Sisters" to serenade the semi finalists during the evening gown competition. I felt that those experiences made the competition feel more meaningful instead of the semi finalists just strutting their stuff trying to look/walk sexy in their gowns post-1995 to date.
SO much fun! I just judged this today - here are my notes. 1) USA was SO much stronger back in the day 2) Interview - VIRGINIA, she absolutely killed it 3) Swimsuit - LOUISIANA, Miss Universe winning body! 4) Evening Gown - SOUTH CAROLINA - she should have worn that at Universe - completely timeless and breathtaking performance All the above are 9.99 performances The Top 6 was EXACTLY correct I picked all 6 5) Top 6 questions - NORTH CAROLINA KILLED it The rest didn't really move me For the winner? Virginia did everything right, but I felt the gown was a tiny bit tacky, and she went a little preachy at the end North Carolina just didnt have the judges overall support - but gave a 2 part answer South Carolina - The GOWN, her confidence, and that FIRST line I think anyone is innocent before they are proven guilty, and Bob Goens classmate picture really helped SEAL IT But overall - virginia did the best - althou north carolina gave the most sensible answer, publicly stripped was a bit harsh from a miss usa - virginia came from the heart - and it cost her the title - and i cant fault her for doing so - but its a pageant, you gotta be middle of road or present facts with class- GREAT job VIRGINIA!
Loved this analysis. Yeah, back then, it was better to give a 'safe' and non-harsh answer, and Virginia's stance, although well-articulated, wasn't as well-received compared to South Carolina's 'innocent until proven guilty' opening (plus Garcia and DeJoria judges were never going to give the crown to Virginia based on their scores). Biasedly, I would've had Virginia winning since I always liked that she chose a position on Tonya Harding and defended it well. But both she and Lu (Emmy award winning Los Angeles news anchor) ended up with very successful lives.
Anyway none of them would have a chance to win, the favorites at that time were Sushmita Sen and Carolina Gómez Correa, especially the latter, was very well prepared, the expert critics say that the Colombian yes or yes should have gained, by its beauty and intelligence, key factors to win that type of contest. But who won was the girl from India, Sushmita Sen, currently they are both communicating through their Instagram accounts. IMHO!
Now U can imagine if Chelsi Smith had gone to that event in 1994? It would have been crazy, it would be a clash of intelligent beauties and I could even dare to say, and that I'm Colombian, would win Chelsi Smith and vice-chancellor Colombia Carolina Gómez Correa.
I Think that Miss Colombia 1994 is one of the most charming and charismatic of all girls ever and its unbelievable that she didn't win. Miss India was of course very pretty and nice but still. In fact I thought Colombia should have won three years in a row. As for Chelsi Smith i think that Carolina surpassed her too. And no I am not Colombian. ;-)
it was nice to hear during that time when our country Philippines hosted the 43rd Annual Miss Universe right here in Manila... We loved Lu when she competed here. She have learned several Tagalog languages.
The top 2 were amazing and either of them could have won. Lu seemed to get rob though with an excellent answer to her Miss Universe top 6 question. We can't say if she would have won because we don't know how she would have responded to the last question. However, she should have gotten that chance. Very poised and articulate. Miss Virginia was equally poised and articulate. Strong field this year. Miss Louisiana also did well in this pageant with her top 6 answer and should have had a shot in the top 3 too. There were some amazing women this year.
I remember this Miss USA edition from back then. This year had one of the most special, quality and competitive top 6 finalists ever at Miss USA. Any of the top 6 could have made it to the top 3, or even win the title. Lu was very lucky in top 6, and must have edged Louisiana by a tiny number, but for sure Lu was not ranked one or two in the top 6 questions round. However, for me Miss North Carolina was the best in the final question not just because of her answer and content, but because she didn't name any names. She stayed neutral within the context and tone of the question, and examined the situation of the athlete.
Lu did edged Louisiana out like a small margin. She got a 9.675 while LA got 9.650 so Lu just made it in at 3rd place. North Carolina came into the top 6 in sixth place. Pre 1990 she would've been out of the running but with the top 6 format, she got into one of the top 3 spots just like in 1993, where Kansas came in at 6th place and jumped over Hawaii, Pennsylvania and NJ for one of the final 3 spots.

Per the web site "Song Facts" - When the son of a Warner Bros. executive suggested to Prince that he didn't have another hit record in him, he wrote this song the next day. What a guy!!! It wud be his first #1 hit in the UK!! This was released by Prince on his own NPG label and it was his first release since changing his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol.
Virginia basically ruled the competition, and she even answered much better than Lu. Idk imo Virginia was the clear winner. Weird stuff that happens in pageants, oh well!

I feel North Carolina won the final question round simply because she did not name names. It is safer and more professional to not jump to conclusions by naming names when the question doesn't name a particular name or character but instead mentions the scenario. What if the question was referring to another name/character that is in a similar question? However, it must never solely be about the answer but about the overall impression. Miss South Carolina was the best overall.
I wasn't bad at all really since it was hard to understand the questioner's accent. Once she obtained the needed clarity on the question, she answered it very well!

Tonya Harding was not proven guilty at the time and that is a fact. Therefore, South Carolina was the winner on top of coming 1st in preliminaries, a consistent performance on final night, and unbiased and logical final answer. Lu Parker wished Tonya Harding well in her answer and played her cards right with that. The judges made a fair decision that year!
Weird that the swimsuit and interview are out of order on this video. This year, swimsuit came first, as evident by the Top 12 were announced in swimsuit.
That's the thing, it is not and must not be based on just the final question (or finalist question), some years and pageants make this error. The panel is to judge on the answer but also the overall impression as the pageant gets later. It is clear that the judges followed this for this year, because Lu narrowly escaped in the top 6 round. Then all final three answered very well and strong, so it's clear the judges went with overall impression. It was not like other years or pageants where there was a weak answer. Lu won during a tough year and pageant.
Virginia spoke the best, but it was the content of her speech that ruined her. You cannot disregard "innocent until proven guilty" like she did and expect to win!

Actually you cannot say that South Carolina is more of a Miss America type, because anytime before the 2000s, Miss USA and Miss America were just beauty queen style, very similar not much difference, just beauty queen style. You are basing it on your 2000s views when Miss USA became more model-style. But today USA and America systems share similarities again, this time being a combination of beauty queen with model. In some ways, both have suffered because the look and style of the candidates USA/Teen USA/Universe and America are too cookie-cutter genetic.

It cannot be denied that Lu is beautiful, but Colombia crushed her in everything, beauty, intelligence and everything looked very good on her. IMHO! 🤫🤷🏻♂️
Actually, USA would have scored higher in the top 6 question had a judge correctly entered his score. Her not having all of the judges score hurt her. If the judge would have given her 9.6/9.7 or higher she would have scored higher and would have been a different top 3. With most likely Carolina winning.
Very good analysis, both of you. It was supposed to be Lu Parker (USA) in the final three at Miss Universe 1994, because it's not just the answers but overall performance. Lu was clearly top 3 in the top 6 finalist question round, and she was indeed hurt by the judge not correctly keying-in his score. Perhaps if they had 10 judges instead of 8, Lu might have advanced even with the missed judge's score. Then the top 3 would have been Venezuela, Colombia and USA, with Colombia most likely winning because she was the best overall and was simply incredible.

I had the opportunity to meet Lu when she competed in Miss Universe here in the Philippines. She was like a doll. So beautiful and gracious.

I'm sorry, but I don't think any of those three would have beaten Miss India or Miss Colombia.
Lu should've had the same hair and dress she wore in the 95 pageant. She looked alot better in her final walk in 95 than she did here...
