I think Jericho's narration is great. And for quite a few things that Brian mentions. He isn't over the top and bombastic, and if I didn't know it was him, I'd never realize it was Jericho by voice alone. He doesn't make it about him, which is how he should be. He's only there to connect the dots. And he does it exactly right. I did also keep waiting for the mention of the "I Quit" match. I'm still waiting...
For all his faults, give him this, Jericho makes it sound serious but in a relatable way. But this is Jim Cornette's lackey - he was picked to mirror as many of Corny's points as possible. He is to Corny what Alvarez is to Meltzer.
@@horgh_japan Not in this case, Brian hated on Jericho before Jim did actually. Jim turned on Jericho due to his AEW work and political leanings in the last few years.....before that they were pretty good friends. Brian shit-talked Jericho way before that.
This is one I want to see. This was a guy who had the potential of being a major superstar at a Ric Flair level, but his career was cut short from an accident. The good news is his story did have a happy ending, so this will be great to watch.
You could argue that the void left by Magnum TA set the stage for the rise of Sting. Then again I guess Sting would've got the big push eventually. However the NWA had lost the momentum that TA brought by then.
Tully (or the Horseman) will probably get his own Darkside so that's the ony reason I can think of not to include his epic war with Magnum over the United States Championship! That match was amazinga! No chairs or tables! These guys had something else....Talent!
Tully should have his own episode. His story is kinda dark. Extremely talented guy - a heel's heel whose career was done when he was still in his prime.
What would the story be? Tully & Gino working in Houston than Tully vs magnum ta than Tully & arn than end it with the run in wwf than finish it with "finding religion" ❓
@SAM3 I was thinking more along the lines of what was happening with him behind the scenes. You should check out his older shoot interviews. He was really candid in those.
Just glad they finally did an episode on someone who is actually still alive. Brawl for All doesn't really count. Also the Candido episode had me crying by the end but there wasn't a dry eye from anyone in that episode so I didn't feel as bad.
Magnum T.A. also had a good amateur wrestling background. That amateur wrestling background is always a plus to have, for Professional Wrestlers (i.e. "Dr.Death" Steve Williams, Bret "Hitman" Hart", Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Brad Armstrong, "Gentleman" Chris Adams, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, Brickhouse Brown, Adrian Adonis, Roddy Piper, Brian Blair, Steve Kern, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson Ole Anderson and MANY more). On a side note, I would to have loved to have seen: Magnum T.A. & "Dr.Death" Steve Williams vs. "Mr.Wonderful" Paul Orndorff & "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
I knew Magnum was a star, but I had no idea how much they had riding on him. It was eye-opening. I remember when the accident happened and switching Nikita face. It was felt up here too in Canada.
Sting would've broken through regardless. He just had "it." I could picture a scenario where Magnum and Sting would've been the JCP/WCW equivalent to Hogan and Warrior in WWF where they would eventually meet in a babyface vs. babyface feud.
@@johngallagher72 agreed. the difference is that you probably couldve done a magnum heel turn to set up those guys later on. magnum wouldve been a great nwa champ and potentially a heel champion if given the opportunity. magnum just had 'it'.
Liev Schreiber narrated the HBO doc on the 1968 Detroit Tigers, and did a good job. Also, I prefer Dutch’s narration over Jericho’s, just a matter of taste.
If Magnum TA went to the WWE in the late 80s or early 90s, Vince would have either gave him a silly Red Rooster type of gimmick where he didnt get over or he would have been like the Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich and been IC champ and a solid mid carder. He would not have feuded with Hulk Hogan and been a main eventer. No chance. I see lots of comparisons with Magnum TA and Scott Hall so I think he would have had to wait until the mid 90s when Hogan was gone from WWE to jump there and be given a big push.
Funny how this man hates on dark side of the Ring's production but has no credit to anything more than throwing jim cornett slow pitch softball questions
Even better: They have Jericho doing the narration, but they are going with the point of view that Jericho can whine about the stupidest things, thinking he's more than he is.
It's probably what helped him in not becoming embittered over it. I guess it would've been even harder as it already was if he had to constantly think about not being able to do the thing he loved more than anything else in life, as many wrestlers of that time described it.
@@KomradeKrusherSo many wrestlers in the 80's/90's didn't seem to have any life or plans outside of wrestling and partying , explaining why so many ended up broken and prematurely dead. Magnum definitely seems like an exception to that.
A good example of building to the title win and booking the show to reflect the narrative they want to get across is with Sting vs Flair GAB1990. They had built up Sting as the obvious successor to Flair for a while. When that GAB came around it was basically set up to get them to Sting beating Flair in the main event. They would've done something similar with Magnum and it would've been great. Sad story. At least he did well in life after the ring.
Someone tell Brian, that they only have an hr and can’t go over every feud in detail. It’s about his rise and fall. I like jericho as narrator and has nothing to do cause he is Canadian.

The episode was really bad. It made Magnum look really bad. He cheats on his wife multiple times and she catches him once and forgives him. Then he gets into the car accident and she nurses him through the entire accident, and then cheats on her again. A total doche.
I was born and raised in the Charlotte area and was in about the 3rd grade when Magnum's crash happened. I remember it well. I found out about it on the radio while getting ready for school the morning of the wreck and was in shock to hear the news. I rarely watched tv in the morning in back then but had to run down stairs turn on the TV and see what the local news to learn more. They had a press conference on TV about it and talked about it as if the president had been assassinated. My sister attended a school that was almost across the street from where the wreck happened and I can remember riding past the wreck site. The car was gone but you could see scraps from the car all over and the grass torn up. It was muddy because it was just one of those cold wet dreary mornings. Jim is right, the women were crazy about him because he was a good looking guy. They gave him the name Magnum because he looked kind of like Tom Selleck and Magnum PI was one of the hotest shows on TV at the time. Other than Tom Selleck having brown short hair and Magnum TA having blond long hair they did look a lot alike and women were crazy over Tom Selleck in those days. But even guys liked Magnum. He looked and acted like the kind of guy you'd want to have on your side in a bar fight. Magnum kind of reminded you of the kind of guy that was like the All State QB in high school that everybody thought would go pro one day. He looked like and kind of played the part of the kind of guy that would stick up for you at school if you were being bullied. He just had that thing going that made you think that women loved him and men didn't want to mess with him. He fit in with the Hank Williams Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd beer drinking pick up truck and Camero and Harley Davidson driving kind of crowd. He had that all American tough guy that could get any woman he wanted thing going on that we all looked up to and admired.
@DMB-mq3tt Us modern-day Neanderthals are soooo desensitized that yes, a car accident isn't that dark. Too much media has us looking for stories like Grizzly Smith, or Owen's fall. Sad.
@DMB1990 Lots of professional wrestlers careers have been cut short due to injuries. Might as well make a biography episode for all of them. If Magnum died in the car accident then it would be dark.
@@gothsteeze Lots of guys' careers ended for good right before they were going to become world champion and on their way to possibly being the biggest star in the industry? Meh. Magnum TA's accident was definitely not national news. It was heavily covered in the Crockett Territories, but out West it barely created a blip outside pro wrestling magazines in grocery stores. Nobody watched Crockett on the west coast unless they had cable and loved wrestling. Moreover, I'm so tired of people saying Magnum TA looked like Tom Selleck. No he didn't. They both had mustaches. Terry Allen resembled 1980s Sam Elliott a hell of a lot more than he did Tom Selleck.
Am kind of with Brian (can't believe am saying that). Not a real fan of the Dark Side producers. They have shown their true selves. This was ok. They did not mention Tully, which was a integral feud with Magnum. I just laugh at the comments on non-WWE guys, cause I guarantee there will be multiple mentions of Vince for whatever reason, mostly 'what ifs', which are always dumb cause you never know how people adapt or change in certain situations.
I think it’s a matter of interpretation. I think Brian interprets Documentaries to be A-Z on everyone’s life and career. I see documentaries as TV shows and TV shows are supposed to tell a story and entertain. The point of the Magnum story was to tell the rise and the fall and the redemption. So what they didn’t talk about one specific match? Again I’m not saying you’re wrong I just don’t think not mentioning Tully is that big of a deal.
2:35 Every time the narrator spoke I was noticing how it sounded like Jericho but thought surely they would make that clearer if it was. Such a weird choice in narration.

That better be a special, 2-hour episode.
@@aceldamia9114 Jim: hey! We ordered the fucking food!
Chris Jericho is a fine narrator .
I like Jericho as the narrator. He’s not bad
Yeah Brian is hating Jericho is good
It's actually the one thing he's doing right now that I actually like lol
Brian is being weird. Wrestling wise is fair, but complaining a narration he sounds like a child.
Certainly preferable to Jericho the wrestler, Jericho the singer or Jericho the hotel guest!
@@joesmoe8841 he sounds like an old fart when do children cry about narration
"He had more sex on the way to the ring than I have my entire life!"
Popped me hard
These thumbnails!!! Excellent work as always, Travis.
You know what, Jericho's narration is fine on this. Brian's of course entitled to his opinion, but wish he'd lighten up on some of the nitpicks.
I love you Corny, but girls were not “jumping up and down” and “frothing at the mouth” for Dusty Rhodes. 🤣🤣🤣 5:37
Watched the episode earlier today on UA-cam, I was wondering if somebody would bitch about Jake Roberts (again). Jericho did a fine job narrating.
Jericho does a great job of narrating
Don’t know about Kerry, but I’d add David Von Erich as a huge what-if
They should have had teh clip where Duthty and Magnum had the full length fur coats
This may be Travis Heckel's magnum opus, if you'll pardon the pun.
@@SAM-ru4vxRight!? IMO Tully was awesome! A criminally under ratted world champ level heel!
@SAM3 I was thinking more along the lines of what was happening with him behind the scenes. You should check out his older shoot interviews. He was really candid in those.
I gotta agree with Brian on the narrator. I liked Dutch as the narrator a lot more than Jericho.
I liked Foley the 1 episode he did
I liked Dutch as well. His voice has that grizzled old veteran tone to it.
Just glad they finally did an episode on someone who is actually still alive. Brawl for All doesn't really count. Also the Candido episode had me crying by the end but there wasn't a dry eye from anyone in that episode so I didn't feel as bad.
I get what you mean, but it's just easier for them to talk about someone who has passed away, since you know the whole story has been told.
They did Jake the Snake (well Grizzly Smith's family) but Jake is barely alive at this point
Magnum T.A. also had a good amateur wrestling background.
That amateur wrestling background is always a plus to have, for Professional Wrestlers (i.e. "Dr.Death" Steve Williams, Bret "Hitman" Hart", Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Brad Armstrong, "Gentleman" Chris Adams, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, Brickhouse Brown, Adrian Adonis, Roddy Piper, Brian Blair, Steve Kern, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson Ole Anderson and MANY more).
On a side note, I would to have loved to have seen:
Magnum T.A. & "Dr.Death" Steve Williams
vs.
"Mr.Wonderful" Paul Orndorff & "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
I knew Magnum was a star, but I had no idea how much they had riding on him. It was eye-opening. I remember when the accident happened and switching Nikita face. It was felt up here too in Canada.
Jericho is great at the narration.
Where would Sting's career have gone if Magnums accident never happened?
Or Luger's?
Both would have broke through ...just would have taken longer
Sting would've broken through regardless. He just had "it." I could picture a scenario where Magnum and Sting would've been the JCP/WCW equivalent to Hogan and Warrior in WWF where they would eventually meet in a babyface vs. babyface feud.
@@johngallagher72 agreed. the difference is that you probably couldve done a magnum heel turn to set up those guys later on. magnum wouldve been a great nwa champ and potentially a heel champion if given the opportunity. magnum just had 'it'.
@@DLRX he still comes in as the wannabe horsemen
Liev Schreiber narrated the HBO doc on the 1968 Detroit Tigers, and did a good job. Also, I prefer Dutch’s narration over Jericho’s, just a matter of taste.
Didn’t foley also narrate a few episodes from season 1?
I had no idea there was a doc about the 68 Tigers..have to check it out!
Jim Costanza. Nice work Trav
The perfect theme song for Magnum coming back to the arena after the car wreck would have been Tony Careys "fine, fine day"
I Quit ! I Quit! Legendary cage match in 1986
Brian I get you don’t like Jericho but I think he does a great job narrating these shows. The lack of Tully was disappointing
Jim is RIGHT! Magnum’s first wife sounds like she just stepped out of the Sable School of the Theatrical Arts (Formerly Warrior University).
Jericho sounds like he’s been on Vicodin for the past 4 years
(Hes just fat)
He drove with his Porsche in a Telephone Pole , and now he builts them?
I loved the best of 7 series between Magnum TA and Nikita.
Jim as George 😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 He said it would be tasteful!
😂😂😂 lover boy...you are a lover boy
@Donna1175 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I feel fat😣
Naahh!!! Youre STOUT!!!💪🏽
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Some kind of ill conceived pornography ring " 😂
I imagine Tully not being mentioned was probably one of the stipulations.
Lol. Jim Cornette as George Costanza 😆😆
Can't Stand Ya!
Agreed. I never saw the mic skills everyone in the documentary raved about. He was solid, but hardly extraordinary.
i knew the magnum ta story already, but this was a top 3 dark side episode. so well done.
That montage of Jim Crockett Productions vs WWF was awesome too, they nailed that shit 👍
I figured Magnum was going to get the gold-but I had no idea how much they had riding on him. That was eye-opening.
Funny how this man hates on dark side of the Ring's production but has no credit to anything more than throwing jim cornett slow pitch softball questions
Can't believe they didn't bring up the "I Quit" match on the episode. Way to iconic of a match to not talk about it for a moment
Last is nitpicking, Jericho was fine as a narrator. I didn't even know it was him until the credits.
He was terrible, stop trying to be cool by going against what everyone agrees on
I cant wait for Dark Side of the Ring : Chris Jericho vs Marriott Bonvoy Hotels.
TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!
Even better: They have Jericho doing the narration, but they are going with the point of view that Jericho can whine about the stupidest things, thinking he's more than he is.
Before he was in the accident I didn't know Magnum had plans to get out of the business that fast.
Every guy says that. How many do
A good example of building to the title win and booking the show to reflect the narrative they want to get across is with Sting vs Flair GAB1990. They had built up Sting as the obvious successor to Flair for a while. When that GAB came around it was basically set up to get them to Sting beating Flair in the main event.
They would've done something similar with Magnum and it would've been great. Sad story. At least he did well in life after the ring.
The Corny as George Costanza pic is hilarious!
Cornett and.... Costanza?!! What a fucking team 👍
Someone tell Brian, that they only have an hr and can’t go over every feud in detail. It’s about his rise and fall. I like jericho as narrator and has nothing to do cause he is Canadian.
Listening to jim the person id think that would qualify for a candle light mourning would be rey mysterio. He beloved by the Hispanic population and by the people in san Diego and alot of fans ( me included) put him on the same level as eddie in terms in how much we love him. I cried when eddie died and if something ever happened to rey id cry again
The anti-Jericho criticisms are just biased and petty.
4:03 Lmao I’m sure she’s a nice woman but she spoke like they were going to disguise her voice & blur her face
As weird as this may sound I think this is the happiest ending to a DSOTR, While what happened to Magnum was a tragedy and killed his career he's still living life and seems somewhat happy.
Either this or the Von Erich one as Kevin Von Erich is still alive and living a happy life.
Jericho is fine as the narrator.
The episode was really bad. It made Magnum look really bad. He cheats on his wife multiple times and she catches him once and forgives him. Then he gets into the car accident and she nurses him through the entire accident, and then cheats on her again. A total doche.
The episode doesn’t make him look bad, doing something like that does
Jericho doesnt sound bombed.
This makes my day love the drawing. I enjoy more to Listening to brian and jim
This episode wasn't the slightest bit dark but still a decent episode.
@@gothsteeze not many of them were on the brink of superstardom that’s why magnum TA is being discussed you uncultured swine
@@gothsteeze Lots of guys' careers ended for good right before they were going to become world champion and on their way to possibly being the biggest star in the industry? You don't see how that adds to the darkness? That a person is on the verge of what seems like destiny, an unstoppable ascent, only to have it all taken from them in an instant due to a slippery road.
@@bradleygermain6288 Well, the whole selling point of the show is to see really bad stuff. That is why it's called " _Dark Side_ of the Ring". No one's saying that every episode has to have a Grizzly Smith or a incident where someone dies, but the truly bad stuff in the episode didn't even happen to Magnum.
This episode left out out a lot. No mention of the I quit match or Tully Blanchard
Clicked on the video purely because of the thumbnail
"jericho sounds so depressed as a narrator"
What do you want him to do on a show called Dark Side of the Ring Brian? Cartwheels? 😂
I'm glad to hear that Allen was able to move on with his life and enjoy a successful career out of the ring.
I wish they could have put in the stuff with Magnum and Wrestling II
2:35 Every time the narrator spoke I was noticing how it sounded like Jericho but thought surely they would make that clearer if it was. Such a weird choice in narration.
