Dave and Herb are joined by mix engineer Tony Maserati on the 126th episode of Pensado's Place! Please 'Like' and 'Follow'! / pensadosplace / pensadosplace
Tony's the real deal, He gave details on all aspect of mixing, from emotion to technical parameters. One of the best interviews.. Dave as always delivers the intricate analysis we all love him for.
In reply to the ITL; Another trick I've recently used to get sharper esses in my mix: duplicate the vocal track. Put a de-esser on the duplicate and put it to "listen" mode, which isolates the esses. Now you can mix that in with to original or treat it with distortion, EQ, comp, etc. to make it do what you want.
"My favorite mixes create images in my mind i dont care if they're the correct image or even the image the mixer wanted me to have , I just want a damn image." Dave
i'm learning a shit-ton just listening to these guys talk, and I'm not a mixer, I'm a composer / musician. I'm starting to "see" (hear) holes in the sonic landscape of my compositions. very cool.
I think that Tony Maserati is a smart & humble person. An engineer that pays attention to details & the opinions of his clients. A guy of relationships. No surprise that he's so successful!
What an amazing interview with a living legend. I love how you get into the nitty gritty, and was excited to go back and listen to blurred lines after learning of the 8th note/16th note delay tricks is using!! I always learn something new Herb and Dave! Great work!
showin some love and respect from Brazil guys!!! no words to say thanks for the incredible school-channel-show!!! big knowledge ! long life! future revolution. peace and love!
Best video I've ever seen on UA-cam. I feel so good after watching this. Mr. Maserati is brilliant. Explained everything soooo well. Thanks Pensado's Place! -Ali-
Great interview with a real master! I love his attitude towards artists. Getting to know the artist is key, but it's also an effort. To many producers and mix engineers just do their own thing.
Lest we forget thanking #HerbTrawick for turnin #youtube into a more useful source of information than any $7,000.00 Recording Shool. Yall already know what you're doin for us TRUE schoolers, but your impact on the children with this vocational interest at heart is worthy of top honors.
Wow...i cant believe how good that show was! Probably as good as the CLA and JJP episodes! Thanks a lot guys for this incredible information...you really are the best! ;-)
BEST SHOW EVER!! Thank you guys sooooo much for this :) P.S. will there be any chance for Jeff Bhasker on interview someday?? I love to see him on this show :)
Love the channel! Can we change the roadhouse 1992 Rosanne intro music? It so waters down the show to me... again-> love the show though thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously man, you guys are too cool. My mixes have increased 10x in the past half a year. And it's not even because of ITL. It's just attitude towards the mix. It is indeed, all about 'feel'. Mixing's no longer a science for me
There is better way to isolate sibilants, instead of EQ you can use FabFilter Pro-DS with Audition Triggering button, you can hear on which parts of the audio Pro-DS is triggering. This helps you choose an appropriate Threshold level as well, making sure Pro-DS is catching all necessary peaks without triggering on anything else; and use that for triggering expander.
great episode.. I just have the craziest idea: you guys had an episode with Jens Bogren ! he's one of the hotest names in the mixing rock and metal world right now. if you guys don't know him check him out.
Must admit, that song "blurred lines"...I don't really like it....but the way it was produced...and mixed....it has balls!...in today's pop world, hard panned isolated elements and quieter vocals is a gutsy move....bravo!
Another Excellent show guys! …I have an idea for a contest. Someone, somehow wins a day with a pro ("It's me, Dave! Let me in, man. I got the stuff"). A day of apprenticeship, where we can learn how to pull off a great mix with what we have. …Just to throw that idea out there into the universe.
This might be a stupid question to some, but sometimes you gotta ask those questions to learn. Was blurred lines monophonic? At 23:00 Dave talked about that the effect of the panning in the song wouldn't work if the song was stereo?
Go listen to it with headphones then without, you will know exactly what he means after about 30 secs of listening. It's an effect, the same way stereo was an 'effect' in the days of mono. Mr M's description of imagining the instruments as people in the room is very good. Every sentence in this interview is a gem. Good to see two friends talking shop.
So how do these guys know each other? Dave and Herb? Are they buddies that decided to start a UA-cam channel and just started making these badass videos or what?
filter out or null down some of the frequencies you dont want and saturate what is left of the signal-- others have mentioned this technique also distressor to 'eq' to the same manner!
ObviousArtists I wish I had a distressor sitting around at my place. I will have to do it with plugins. Now that you explained it, it sounds like what I was picturing. Thank you.
That made me laugh being almost 60 and never loved rock more than now. I often smile to my self at Daves deplomacy twards the art he works on . And I wonder what he realy thinks.Cause to me some is just t.v. comercials gone horribly wrong or something. Forgive my frankness LOL. Not all U understand
Would you care to let us listen to short excerpts of the tracks you are talking about, because you might not know this: but not everyone is super focused on the lives of the artists you invite... We don't necessarily know what track they are talking about (even if you think it's supposed to be super famous), so being able to hear excerpts would help make sense of all the great material they are saying in the meantime. Otherwise I can't even tell if he is right or wrong :D
Tony Reminds me of a dentist. A very talented mixing dentist.
i can't unsee this :D
ill go architect

Dave is just an unbelievably nice guy.
NaSaKiD1000 wtf is your problem
two masters discussing their craft - mesmorising to watch - and I am glad I understand what they are talking about.
In reply to the ITL; Another trick I've recently used to get sharper esses in my mix: duplicate the vocal track. Put a de-esser on the duplicate and put it to "listen" mode, which isolates the esses. nice hitting em with the cigar scotch combo
Wow I see a lot of Pro-Q in the "Into the Lair" segment! Liking that plugin Dave? I've been in love with everything FabFilter makes lately!
Seriously man, you guys are too cool. My mixes have increased 10x in the past half a year. And it's not even because of ITL. It's just attitude towards the mix. It is indeed, all about 'feel'. Mixing's no longer a science for me

Could someone tell what topics the touch on in this interview so i know if it interests me?
Probably the Avid D-Fi family (Lo-Fi is one of the included plugins, and can do sample rate reduction and saturation)
where do you find the answer to the vintage king question from dave?
great episode.. I just have the craziest idea: you guys had an episode with Jens Bogren ! he's one of the hotest names in the mixing rock and metal world right now. if you guys don't know him check him out.
Thank you all :)
Starts at 12:09
all these guys are gents
Must admit, that song "blurred lines"...I don't really like it....but the way it was produced...and mixed....it has balls!...in today's pop world, hard panned isolated elements and quieter vocals is a gutsy move....bravo!
Also, what are the records you are talking about? One with Robin and Pink?
Just Give Me A Reason by Pink

Another Excellent show guys! …I have an idea for a contest. Someone, somehow wins a day with a pro ("It's me, Dave! Let me in, man. I got the stuff"). A day of apprenticeship, where we can learn how to pull off a great mix with what we have. …Just to throw that idea out there into the universe.

***** I see, that made sense. Thanks for taking the time
where is the answer to the vintage king guy question?
Cowbells are people too.
'warm' is harmonically distorted
So how do these guys know each other? Dave and Herb? Are they buddies that decided to start a UA-cam channel and just started making these badass videos or what?
+Daniel Cardin Herb is Dave's manager
I was curious how Dave was using the saturating plugin as eq like he said in the program? I can't picture what that means in my head.
filter out or null down some of the frequencies you dont want and saturate what is left of the signal-- others have mentioned this technique also distressor to 'eq' to the same manner!
ObviousArtists

*****
i use a freeware plugin included in the ANTRESS MODERN bundle : Modern Deathcore is a distressor emulator.... if you can run vst plugins.....
Really? He sounded like he was making it up as he went along. Though most of Dave's interviewees seem to in comparison.
