I'm full-Japanese (American of course). I think South Korea (not the North) is an amazing, vibrant, and up-and-coming world power. However, I noticed that people always try to side with one or the other over discussions of which nations are better. In the end, you can never really understand the issue between the countries unless you are of such an Asian background. That being said, avoid your final thoughts on the countries until you've actually immersed yourself in each culture.

It's the 21st century, you can import food. Also it is better for countries to produce high end products like software and machinery than primary products like cabbage and potatoes. This is why South Korea is a rich country. But at the same time you still have to maintain some form of farming industry just in case, but I doubt South Korea could feed itself, unless everyone goes back to farming (poor).

After watching this documentary, l realised that 2 decades ago South Korea was a poor nation and now that small country is neck to neck with Japan. The USA helped them during the Korean War and look at them now, other countries are working for a better future and what are we doing here in the USA beside playing politics?

Both Korea and Japan as well as China fought the western intrusion at first with mixed results, but Japan chose to open up to the West and learn from that and use that basis to initiate industrialization. That was wisely done. Had Korea done that early stage and modernists beat out the conservatives, Korea would have developed a lot earlier. In any rate, that blame falls on Korean leadership at that time.
