- Clip of the track 'Navo' featuring my 1993 homemade custom fretless. From the forthcoming DVD with The Registan Group
In 2002 The British Council made it possible for Scottish Contemporary traditional act ‘The Iron Horse’ to come together with the the twenty piece Uzbekistan chamber orchestra -Sogdiana, in a memorable musical fusion. Roy Marchbank (then guitarist and co composer with the The Iron Horse) had reworked a traditional Uzbekistan piece fusing it with traditional Scottish rhythm and tuning. On flying to Tashkent an intense ten days of rehearsals and recording culminated in live concerts in Samarkand and Tashkent ( the latter televised live to millions)
Now, after staying in close contact for twenty years, Zulkhorbek Turapov (and Komiljon Shermatov , originally of Sogdiana) are reunited with Roy Marchbank as The Registan Group. The collaboration, has created a new and exciting World Fusion, incorporating ancient and original playing techniques with with Jazz, Flamenco, Classical and Traditional influences “To say this meeting of musical minds and cultures has produced something wonderfully unique is an understatement" says Roy “We all look forward to performing this together live in concert”
That fretless fits the music perfectly and the fast run sounds almost like a pedal steel on steroids, if there were such a thing! This is great stuff!
Cheers bud! I meant to say the floating tremolo helps at times. Its a little bit on the sensitive side but handy.
Wow Roy !! You are an incarnation of enlightenment- what a beautiful sound , what a lightning strike your skill and dedication are - finding you is like finding a sonic nugget of gold - brilliant , brilliant , brilliant 🙏🌏✌️⚡️🎸🎶🎼🔥💥👏👏👏👏👏👏

Cheers bud!
It's so melting sweetness..... ❤
This so the "Great Shawn Lane" ..... ❤❤❤❤
Its so beautiful, like something in heaven played for God!!! Wow that's wonderful
Fantastic and unexpected! I had worked on this project briefly helping my colleagues from the British Council with some interpreting for the Iron Horse and a bit of management for their join concert with Sogdiana in Samarkand which was not easy as the authorities decided to increase the audience by forcing the delegates of a provincial forum dedicated to the 8th March (International Women's Day) to remain in the hall for the performance. Needless to say that most of these being aged Uzbek ladies from collective farms and villages, began to leave soon after the show started - but then it went on quite well when only the interested listeners and viewers remained. It was a great performance and I still have the Iron Horse - Sogdiana CD in my collection. Good memories! It is so nice to know that the collaboration is going on - I've never heard of it here in Tashkent!
Now, the funny bit is that I came across this recording not because of any Uzbek connection but thanks to Andy Edwards' brilliant programmes on prog rock! I have been listening to them almost every day for some time now and immensely enjoying them - and the UA-cam algorithm brought me here and made made really happy. Congratulations and all the best to the Registan Group and to the Law of Three as well!
ПРОСТО КОСМОС!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Witnessing the divine, 1:47 so beautiful!

Beautiful, reminds me of the opening to Abstract Logic by Shawn Lane.
Damn, that's Beautiful!
This man has the music of Ireland in his blood!!
🙏✌️👍🇬🇧
Thank you kind sir! I will with luck return to Eire to spend the rest of my days. I lived in Dublin North and South end 92-97, played with some of the best musicians Eire had to offer and recorded some wonderful sessions and records. Those were great times for this then young musician cutting his teeth as a session player. Eire gave me everything I needed to cultivate what I have to offer. I am forever in her debt.
@@LawofThree Thank YOU!
And, Bravo!! 🙏✌️👍🇬🇧
this sounds like a mix of guitar and synthesizer keyboard. awesome.
Thanks! It’s just the guitar into a limiter pedal. This fretless does sound unique. It was made 5 years before the Vigier surfretter
That Hybrid Sarod alternate picking technique, it’s really your own thing eh?! Nice one. This piece is gorgeous but my favourite section is from 1:40 to 2:00. Beautifully executed.
This is stellar. Using the fretless you made! Wonderful to hear.
Incredible........
Beyond amazing! Just stumbled across this.. how much else is one missing?
That was blissful! Beautiful sound from that fretless.
🔥 Excellent and inspiring work, again! And now with fretless guitar which is not heard so often. 👏👏👏

Like sitting at the lake, then the nuke goes off, then you are at the lake again.
Another VERY impressive piece. Such a unique sound you make on the fretless.

From 0:49 reminds me of Shawn Lane's Epilogue (for Lisa). Do you have full version of your music for download?
Hey Prabin, It was taken from a tune I wrote called Rabs Lament

Awesome, Roy!
Happy New Year! Good to see you again!
Thanks mate. Happy New Year!
Excellent! New neck on your guitar?
Copied from fb...There's a bit of a backstory to the fretless guitar used in this video. I lived in Dublin from 92-97. Eire btw was where I cut my session teeth and turned pro. I still consider Dublin my home from home.
During my time working in the theatre playing in the pit bands, we would sneak off after show to get schooled by some of the legendary musicians that played in the bar/venue JJ Smyths on Aungier St.
After asking about for a good guitar luthier, I was passed an address for Derrick Nelson 'Danvel Guitars’
I had an old 1989 Ibanez 560 I wanted to turn into a fretless and had met a lad on a construction job who worked in a stainless steel factory making cutlery who kindly milled me a couple of stainless steel fingerboards. So in 1993, Derrick brought my dream and this guitar to life. Bar a few flirtations with other tracks I have never used it as a feature instrument.
The track has a Uilleann pipe drone type. I can't wait for you all to hear the other guys and the finished DVD.
