  • Here's how a hydraulic steering rack works to turn the wheels on your car.
    Hydraulic steering has been used for decades to provide assist to drivers turning the wheels of especially heavy vehicles.
    Fluid is pressurized by a hydraulic pump and is sent to the rotary valve via the high pressure hose.
    Depending on the direction, the fluid is pushed into the opposite side of the cylinder housing, pushing the piston. The piston is connected to the rack, which connects the tie rods and hence the wheels at the steering knuckle.
    Its all explained in the video, Thanks

    Thanks Nice and clear demonstration,
    I have a problem, when I park the vehicle for 8 hours the oil level reach to maximum and once engine starts the oil level becomes at min level... please advise what could be the possible reason...

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  Рік тому +1

      The most likely reason for the power steering oil reaching the maximum level when the vehicle is parked for 8 hours and then going to the minimum level when the vehicle is started and driven is that there is a leak in the power steering system.
      When the vehicle is parked for an extended period, the power steering oil settles at the bottom of the reservoir, and any leaks in the system allow air to enter the system, which causes the oil level to drop. When the vehicle is started and the power steering system is engaged, the pump draws in air instead of oil, which causes the power steering to feel weak or "sluggish" and the oil level to drop further

    Great and very clear video. I perceived i interchanged the high pressured lines at the rotary valve section during rack installation, Please i like to know if the the steering system will still work fine ( i mean not hard to turn) if I leave it that way?

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  2 роки тому

      Dear both the high pressure lines are same, so there will be no problem (hard steering) if you interchange these lines.
      The most important thing is tha if you Interchanged the place at valve you must interchange its place at rack too.

  • @akhtarkh

      The wobbling in a hydraulic steering system at speeds over 80 mph can be caused by tire imbalance, wheel alignment issues, suspension problems, loose steering components, hydraulic fluid issues, damaged steering damper, wheel bearing problems, brake rotor issues, aerodynamic effects, and wheel/tire issues. A thorough inspection by a qualified technician is necessary to diagnose and address the specific cause for safe. driving

    Hi my friend 👋
    I hope you can help me 🌹
    my car peugeot 307 2006
    I have a problem in the power steering.
    * The power steerin Sometimes does not working, But when I turn off The engine and start the engine again the power steering starts works normally,
    sometimes Two or three days pass without any problem The power steering . 💁🏻‍♂️
    And sometimes power steering stops working more then 5 times a day 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I already replaced the power steering in a new one, put it still the same problem 🤦🏻‍♂️
    * I think the problem is overhead .
    I believe that the the power steering temperature goes higher and power steering stops itself 🤔
    what do you think?
    *P.S : wen I cool down the power steering in water hose hes starts works normally 😐
    *P.S 2 : wen The Power steering works the steering wheel is very very easy to Spin and light and fast.
    Thank you for reading my problem and excuse me for explaining a lot 🌹

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  2 роки тому +1

      I have read your description and it's so tricky to answer as many factors are related to your prob as you have replaced it with new one.
      The simplest solution is that the vehicle has simply run out of fluid; this could be due to a leak or it could be because you have not replaced the fluid recently. A more serious problem is that the pump itself is failing. Moreover check for reservoir tank, any leakages, power steering belt for wear or aging. Secondly if you think about high temperature, so I want to clear you that at high temperature it works better while at lower temperatures there must be probs due to viscosity (inverse relation to temp) .

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  2 роки тому

      Oh so it's an electronic powered. The electric power steering uses an electric motor that draws energy from the vehicle's electrical system to provide steering assistance. Sensors detect the torque or effort that the driver is applying at the steering wheel, and a computer decides how much assist needs to be added. So in short, check the motor and sensors too.

    If I have metal shavings in my power steering system should I replace my rack and pinion or flush and replace pump only??

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  8 місяців тому +2

      Metal shavings in your power steering system could indicate a serious issue. It's recommended to thoroughly inspect the system to identify the source of the shavings. If the damage is extensive, replacing the rack and pinion might be necessary. Flushing the system and replacing the pump alone may not address the root cause.

      It's possible the whining noise is simply coming from trapped air bubbles in your power steering fluid. If you suspect this is the case, you can confirm it by removing the cap from the power steering fluid reservoir and checking if any bubbles or froth has formed in it.

I had a contessa years ago but it didn't have power steering and no way to lubricate with steering box oil so I suggested my mechanic who was a bit reluctant but finally agreed to do what I told him, I wanted him to make 2 holes in the rack casing ( housing) and give two grease nipples and after packing grease the steering was smooth as butter. on my Sonata 2002 v6,16", there is a leak in either L or R metal line, I just want to replace the hose/Line Instead of changing the whole Rack & Pinion , which the mechanics do.What do you suggest.??

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  5 років тому

      No need to change the whole rack and pinion, if the leak is in the pressure line, just replace it with a new one. Thats it

    Assalam O Alikum
    I have a problem with my elantra car steering wheel.
    during left or right turn i hearing rubbing/friction sound
    this sound is not from tie rod bush ( i changed all bushes 5 months back)
    if am feeling the sound coming from horn side of my steering.

      @automotivespot  4 роки тому

      W salam.
      If your steering wheel is making a loud rubbing noise when turning, the culprit could be the upper bearing on the steering column itself. This can cause the the plastic on the back of some steering wheels to rub against the cowling on the steering column.

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  4 роки тому +1

      It needs a deep inspection ,, may be the tie rods and ball joints are worn, or the rubber boot is teared up, so do inspect it, secondly check the rack and pinion meshing teeth. Thanks for your apprec.

    Sir, Will it damage the system to turn stereing wheel left or right without starting the car...?

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  5 років тому

      No it wll not, because its the combination of power and manual, so it will work manually in that case 👍

      Yes it is work. If the engine not running you will have heavy steering because the pump doesn't work yet.

    if there is oil leakage around the rubber at the valve what could be the main reason, which part need replacement?

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  7 місяців тому

      The reason could be a damaged or worn-out seal within the valve assembly. Typically, the part that needs to be replaced would be the valve seal to stop the leakage. It's important to diagnose and address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to the power steering system.

    Can we tighten the pinion gear from the bottom to remove looseness/rattles?

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  5 років тому

      No, we can reduce / remove the rattles by tightening the yoke, which is located just below the rack, so there will be no rattling sound.

    My reservoir was leaking from the steering pump, after which i sealed the steering pump (Fixed).. and then the leak stopped..
    but the steering is hard after running the car for like 5/10mins it become somehow heavy while the car is on drive(D) and vehicle is stop (lets say a traffic stop and not moving) this is when its becomes impossible to turn the steering.
    Do you have any ideal the cause or fix for this?

    • @automotivespot
      @automotivespot  Рік тому +1

      There are several reasons for the problem as you mentioned here, and the reasons are as follows
      1.malfunctioning power steering pump
      2.worn power steering belt
      3.faulty power steering control valve
      Check these three, hopefully you ll get the main reason for your problem. Thank you
