  • The stories always come out afterward: churches fall apart, ministries fail, and congregants carry hurt with them for years. The issue of spiritual abuse in the church is both deeply painful but also relevant. We have heard the stories, listened to the podcasts, and seen or experienced the damage ourselves. In this episode of Working with Dan Doriani, Dan talks with Michael Kruger, author of the recently published Bully Pulpit: Confronting the Problem of Spiritual Abuse in the Church. They discuss the book, the nature of abuse in churches, and what there is to be done about it. For instance, could it be possible to prevent abuse before it even begins by writing job descriptions featuring firm accountability and deep transparency and emphasizing servanthood over power and humility over stardom?

We are all sinners in different stages of our healing and growth in Christ. May we give one another some grace.

The Book of James 3:1 says, "NOT MANY of you should become teachers..." Just because someone goes to seminary DOESN'T make them a good pastor, and not ALL who stand behind the pulpit are born again. We have the internet now and many healthy churches are live and online. My advice is to find a healthy, born again pastor online. The man that took over for Charles Stanley is a good place to start. Also, Pastor David Jeremiah at Shadow Mountain El Cajon CA. I pray those of you who are victims of spiritual abuse find God's love grace and healing.

The perfect church on Earth does not exist and you cannot make the perfect church. If you can prove me wrong and find this church DO NOT JOIN IT!!! If you do you will spoil it.

This proverb is repeated to keep people in abusive churches blind to the fact that they are in a church with abusive leadership. Yes, no church is perfect. Yes, some churches are abusive. We should be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. As a person who stayed in an abusive church for a decade and then found an imperfect arm of the church that isn’t abusive, I judge this comment irrelevant at best in this conversation.

Ohh the "no perfect church" manipulation is it? Only bullies and abusers use that one.
