People forget that before the 80's, the Giants had been HORRIBLE for many many years, and the Cowboys were one of the best in the NFC for many many years. Before this game, the Cowboys had won 32 of the previous 40 games between the two of them, often in games not remotely competitive. This was almost a changing of the guard moment, as the Giants were just beginning to be a dominant force in the NFC, while the Cowboys were on the last legs of Landry's great teams for 2 decades. The Giants never lost again in 1986 after this game, winning the Super Bowl, and going 52-22 after words (which includes their disastrous strike year team made up of cab drivers), culminating in another Super Bowl win in 1990. The Cowboys went the other direction, only winning one more game in '86, and missing the playoffs. That fast fall would snowball into a total record of 15-49 after this game which saw the Cowboys become truly dreadful for 5 years, Landry and his staff get fired, and set the stage for something similar to the rising of the Phoenix (the mythical bird, not the team) when Jimmy Johnson and the new batch of Cowboys would make the playoffs in '91, and then have their own dynasty of sorts when they won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years ('92,'93,'95). It may seem as just a regular page in the never ending saga of the changing fortunes of sports teams through the years, but for those of us who grew up in New York in the 70's (before cable TV, internet, or sports networks), and were forced to watch bad Giants and Jets teams all through the 70's, having the Giants beat Dallas in a big game for the division lead, and then win the Super Bowl, was something akin to a fantasy.
Truly dreadful for 5 years? They were 7-8, 3-13, 1-15, 7-9 and then made the playoffs. They were bad for 2 years and mediocre for 2, then made the playoffs, then won 3 SBs in 4 years. Not to nitpick, but they were NOT truly dreadful for 5 years. Even in Landry's last season, 1988, they lost to the Giants 12-10 and 29-21. The had drafted Michael Irvin and Kelvin Edwards, and were about to draft Troy, and they had Herschel. That 3-13 season, they were competitive. They lost 5 games by 3 points or less. They WERE dreadful in 1989, by design. Jimmy Johnson traded/waived anyone who was not in their future plans, including Herschel, and 3 years later they won the SB 52-17. @@comfortat Well, I'm sticking to my statement, they were dreadful for 4.5 seasons between 1986 to 1990, and a 15-49 record in that span really can't be considered anything else, but for arguments sake, I'll go season by season. 1986 : After the Giants game in week 9, Dallas went 1-6 with Steve Pelleur at QB, gave up bunches of yards and points (including 3 straight games over 400 yards allowed), were blown out in most games (3 games they were losing 0-34, 7-24, and 0-24 at halftime) and the lone win was against an even worse 4-12 Chargers team. 1987: Probably the only year you can make a case that they weren't "dreadful", but even in that 7-8 year, they went 2-0 against replacement player strike teams, so they really only went 5-8 against real teams. 1988: They went 3-13, and while I'll grant you they lost a few tight ones, they lost even more that weren't, and they struggled scoring, never getting over 26 points in a game the whole year (21rst in the league total) and finished 25th in the league in points allowed. Sorry, if you go 3-13 and can't score and can't defend, you're dreadful. 1989: 1-15. Yes, they were rebuilding that year for the future, but they went 1-15, which means regardless of their motivations, they were off the charts bad. Huge game!!! As a Cowboys fan this game was devastating. 20 consecutive winning seasons and we were 6-2 going into this game. But when Carl Banks knocked Danny White out of the game unfortunately it was the beginning of the end for Tom Landry
The 1986 season was the beginning of a great run by the Giants. Losing the first two games of the season and never losing another one again culminated by beating Denver in SBXXI. What made it extra special was getting to listen to Summerall and Madden call their games on CBS every week.

Danny White was having a good year 1st half of '86. Cowboys beat Giants in week 1 Monday night game at Texas Stadium. It was a close game. Giants D was ferocious in 86. Broken White's wrist and that tanked the season for Dallas & pretty much White's career afterwards. Giants LBs took out Theismann & Danny White and sacked Ron Jawaraski throughout the 80s. Cowboys weren't down for too long as after rock bottom, Johnson came in as Head Coach and they were dominate in the early to mid 90s. They been overall mediocre since.
Summerall and Madden. Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy the Greek in the studio. All these classic players and coaches. Cardinals were in St. Louis, got a glimpse of those classic Patriot uniforms…so many memories of when sports, not only the NFL, were so great. They mentioned that absolutely epic World Series between the Red Sox and Mets - MLB was strong, the NBA and NCAA basketball and football…So much nostalgia. In my opinion, times really were so much better then.
Definitely more intense. George Young was right on when he said free agency would ruin the game. IMO FA is why we have spoiled punk ass divas playing the game today instead of men.

A Mango This is just so true! Simms was the best utilizing what he had. So with no game breaking wide-out, he went to Bavaro & Morris. In fact, Bavaro had more catches than Bobby Johnson & Stacy Robinson combined. And what Bavaro did AFTER catching the ball, a highlight film of its own! And you could say the same with Morris! And ya gotta love those Simms/Parcells tête-à-tête’s, both of them jawing at each other. It took Simms a while to get over The Bruner Selection, to which Parcells, like The Raven qouth, “neverwrong! neverwrong”... Great times, great teams!
I couldn't disagree with you any more than I do. Earnest Gray, Bobby Johnson, Byron Williams and Zeke Mowatt never get the respect from most Giants fans that they deserve. And Lionel Manuel, Stacey Robinson and Mark Bavaro were an upgrade. And Ingram and Baker deserve respect also. None were flashy and none were divas. I had absolutely no problem with any of these guys
My Dad took me to this game to watch the Boys get sacked umteen times. This really was the turning point for both teams. This Giants team and coach were what real football is about.
Question: was he truly great or is it that since LT was always double covered (and the other front 5 were also great players), Banks had a lot of freedom? I think Banks was just truly great, and the most underrated defensive player I know of.

Once Danny White went down, that it was for the Cowboys until 1991 when they finally made the playoffs and beat the Bears in the wildcard game. We know about the Walker trade, but Charles Haley was the final piece of the puzzle in 1992. For the Giants no one was stopping them that season.

I don't care who your QB is, if your line sucks, your receivers suck and your defense is old and slow you are gonna struggle. Marino would have given them some juice for a few years but this was an aging team on the decline fast. Once Danny White was injured in '86, they were totally exposed for how bad they really were. Landry was getting by with smoke and mirrors at this point with a veteran QB.
I'm glad I grew up in the 80s when the Giants were dominant and most weeks they'd be the game of the week for the NFC. I got to grow up with Madden and Summerall most Sundays until the Cowboys era.
Almost it did: Giants won four of the seven games they played at Giants Stadium in the eighties, and it should have been 6-1. They stopped wearing the white jerseys in 1988 when Dallas came to town.
Dallas actually made their road uniforms in 1983 or 1984 to a darker hue of blue, from a lighter blue (Though still darker than Giants Blue) and white to a navy blue and silver.

Its amazing how good the cowboys looked before the White injury, even in this game. They were handling the giants defense, then White was sacked and it all changed. Landry was still a great coach and could really cover up his teams weaknesses with a veteran QB.

This was the beginning of the Cowboys sad fall from grace in the Landry era. They would only win one more game the rest of the season. Their next winning season would be in 1991. The Giants were en route to the Super Bowl thus ending a long championship drought of 30 years. From the roars of the crowd I think they instinctively knew this would be their year. Love it with the original commercials. The officiating comes under question as it was definitely a fumble at 1:50 before he touched the ground. No way should the ref had blown the whistle that soon. Danny White took some brutal hits in his career. A year earlier he was knocked out of the game in the Cowboys 44-0 loss to the Bears. Joe Morris almost singlehandedly engineered the Giants first TD drive. Amazing runner !!
As people said 26:50 is where everything changed for Dallas. Danny White broke his wrist. The Cowboys ended up going 7-9 only winning one game. The Cowboys would go down the toilet until 1991 Redskin game where they defeated an undefeated Redskins team and while at 6-5 they won out and went 11-5 and then the next year the dynasty started. The Giants won the Super Bowl, had a bad 1987 season, missed out in 1988, then won the division in 89, won the Super Bowl in 90, and then Parcells retired and they fell off the wagon until Dan Reeves came along in 93 where they went to the playoffs.
Dallas drafted some of the worst players ever seen in the 1980's. By 1986 this was a totally over matched team in most areas across the board. Its remarkable what Landry got out of them in 1985 and early 86. They were TERRIBLE.

The '89 Hershal Walker deal, greatest for Dallas, most boneheaded one for Minnesota for three top draft choices that got Dallas three Super Bowls titles and Minnesota no where.
It happened a lot more often back then, I recall it about 4 times a season in the 1980's... Stadiums were smaller then but the fans seemed closer to the field and the stands were steeper. This game isn't a great example of that type of stadium though.

This was a demarcation point in Cowboys history. Beginning of the Landry end- ended the run of 20 straight winning seasons. In the regular season, including this 6-2 start, Dallas from 1966-first half 1986 had gone 214-81-2. The rest of Landry's tenure- 11-28. (I could say they were 12-43 the rest of the decade, but 1989 was clearly starting over with Jimmy Johnson)
You can actually go back to the last seven games of the 1965 season when they went 5-2 to finish 7-7, their first non-losing season in franchise history at the time.
I remember this game as being the one that changed Danny Whites career forever, due to his broken wrist never being the same. Without him, the Cowboys had their first losing season in over 20 years, after starting off as a top ranked offense. The Giants had lost to the Cowboys three straight times, and it was almost a fourth, no thanks to Phil Pozderac. His entire career was plagued with false starts in critical moments. Didn't really matter; because we eventually found out that Steve Pelleur was NOT a starting QB.
The problem was the cowboys TERRIBLE drafts from 1981 on. By the time they got to 1986 there was a clear talent divide between them and the Giants, Redskins, 49ers and Bears. They were totally over matched at the line of scrimmage and had little to no speed on either side of the ball. Landry was such a great coach he would smoke and mirror his way to the playoffs with a veteran QB like White, but it really showed in the playoffs and they consistently got trounced. Once White got hurt in '86 it was over and they were exposed.

Landry probably is urged to retire after the 1987 season had that been a normal year rather than the strike year where their record was inflated by the three strike games where most of their guys played and other teams didn't have any of their regular players.
Interesting fact: #71 on Dallas (Mark Tuinei) was a 4th year player who would later block for Aikman during their 3 Super Bowl titles ‘92, ‘93, ‘95. Sadly, he would pass on in ‘99 (from a heroin overdose) at 39, just 2 years after retiring.
This was the beginning of the end for the Landry era. He would be gone by 1988. There were some players in this Cowboys lineup who would win the SB with Jimmy Johnson in 1992: Mark Tuinei, Bill Bates, Nate Newton, Jim Jeffcoat, Mike Saxon.

Huge game!!! As a Cowboys fan this game was devastating. 20 consecutive winning seasons and we were 6-2 going into this game. But when Carl Banks knocked Danny White out of the game unfortunately it was the beginning of the end for Tom Landry

The 1986 season was the beginning of a great run by the Giants. Losing the first two games of the season and never losing another one again culminated by beating Denver in SBXXI. What made it extra special was getting to listen to Summerall and Madden call their games on CBS every week.
They lost in week 1 to the Cowboys and to the Seahwaks in week 7. Hate to steal your thunder....

All in all I hate the giants,but they did not ask for the 6 penalties that the cowboys committed on themselves! So a win is a win in the nfl
Both teams were 6-2. Dallas went 1-7 after that and the Giants ran the table all the way to the Super Bowl. A true changing of the guard.
Danny White was having a good year 1st half of '86. Cowboys beat Giants in week 1 Monday night game at Texas Stadium. It was a close game. Giants D was ferocious in 86. Broken White's wrist and that tanked the season for Dallas & pretty much White's career afterwards. Giants LBs took out Theismann & Danny White and sacked Ron Jawaraski throughout the 80s. Cowboys weren't down for too long as after rock bottom, Johnson came in as Head Coach and they were dominate in the early to mid 90s. They been overall mediocre since.
Summerall and Madden. Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy the Greek in the studio. All these classic players and coaches. Cardinals were in St. Louis, got a glimpse of those classic Patriot uniforms…so many memories of when sports, not only the NFL, were so great. They mentioned that absolutely epic World Series between the Red Sox and Mets - MLB was strong, the NBA and NCAA basketball and football…So much nostalgia. In my opinion, times really were so much better then.

It's amazing how little weaponry Phil Simms had throughout his Giant career in terms of WR's.
Yet he got the job done when it counted.
A Mango This is just so true! Simms was the best utilizing what he had. So with no game breaking wide-out, he went to Bavaro & Morris. In fact, Bavaro had more catches than Bobby Johnson & Stacy Robinson combined. And what Bavaro did AFTER catching the ball, a highlight film of its own! And you could say the same with Morris!
And ya gotta love those Simms/Parcells tête-à-tête’s, both of them jawing at each other. It took Simms a while to get over The Bruner Selection, to which Parcells, like The Raven qouth, “neverwrong! neverwrong”...

I couldn't disagree with you any more than I do. Earnest Gray, Bobby Johnson, Byron Williams and Zeke Mowatt never get the respect from most Giants fans that they deserve. And Lionel Manuel, Stacey Robinson and Mark Bavaro were an upgrade. And Ingram and Baker deserve respect also. None were flashy and none were divas. I had absolutely no problem with any of these guys
My Dad took me to this game to watch the Boys get sacked umteen times. This really was the turning point for both teams. This Giants team and coach were what real football is about.

Question: was he truly great or is it that since LT was always double covered (and the other front 5 were also great players), Banks had a lot of freedom? I think Banks was just truly great, and the most underrated defensive player I know of.

Once Danny White went down, that it was for the Cowboys until 1991 when they finally made the playoffs and beat the Bears in the wildcard game. We know about the Walker trade, but Charles Haley was the final piece of the puzzle in 1992. For the Giants no one was stopping them that season.

@@danieltilson4912 Marino would have got his brains beat in by 1988. The cowboys issue was a lack of talent across the board due to TERRIBLE drafts throughout the 80's. I don't care who your QB is, if your line sucks, your receivers suck and your defense is old and slow you are gonna struggle. Marino would have given them some juice for a few years but this was an aging team on the decline fast. Once Danny White was injured in '86, they were totally exposed for how bad they really were. Landry was getting by with smoke and mirrors at this point with a veteran QB.

80s uniforms were great
I'm glad I grew up in the 80s when the Giants were dominant and most weeks they'd be the game of the week for the NFC. I got to grow up with Madden and Summerall most Sundays until the Cowboys era.
Giants wore their road jerseys here to make the Cowboys wear their "jinxed" blue jerseys.
It worked.
Almost it did: Giants won four of the seven games they played at Giants Stadium in the eighties, and it should have been 6-1. They stopped wearing the white jerseys in 1988 when Dallas came to town.
Dallas actually made their road uniforms in 1983 or 1984 to a darker hue of blue, from a lighter blue (Though still darker than Giants Blue) and white to a navy blue and silver.
It’s the grey numbers and arm stripes I couldn’t figure out. Keep em white: why tinker?

These were the days. I haven’t watched the video yet but I remember having to go out with my uncle and listening to the game in the car on the radio. Carl Banks broke Danny Whites wrist if I remember correctly.
Such great memories in the 80's
The Cowboys got off to a good start in 1986. But when Danny White was injured against the Giants, they went into a downward spiral so severe that it resulted in their first losing season in over two decades. That's the difference a veteran quarterback can make.
No doubt. White's injury exposed growing issues on the roster. The rest of the NFC East was getting bigger, stronger and more physical, and the cowboys were getting less physical and becoming undersized and old as the 80's progressed. Steve Pelluer was a terrible backup as well.
Its amazing how good the cowboys looked before the White injury, even in this game. They were handling the giants defense, then White was sacked and it all changed. Landry was still a great coach and could really cover up his teams weaknesses with a veteran QB.

This was the beginning of the Cowboys sad fall from grace in the Landry era. They would only win one more game the rest of the season. Their next winning season would be in 1991. The Giants were en route to the Super Bowl thus ending a long championship drought of 30 years. From the roars of the crowd I think they instinctively knew this would be their year. Love it with the original commercials. The officiating comes under question as it was definitely a fumble at 1:50 before he touched the ground. No way should the ref had blown the whistle that soon.
Danny White took some brutal hits in his career. A year earlier he was knocked out of the game in the Cowboys 44-0 loss to the Bears.
Joe Morris almost singlehandedly engineered the Giants first TD drive. Amazing runner !!

As people said 26:50 is where everything changed for Dallas. Danny White broke his wrist. The Cowboys ended up going 7-9 only winning one game. The Cowboys would go down the toilet until 1991 Redskin game where they defeated an undefeated Redskins team and while at 6-5 they won out and went 11-5 and then the next year the dynasty started. The Giants won the Super Bowl, had a bad 1987 season, missed out in 1988, then won the division in 89, won the Super Bowl in 90, and then Parcells retired and they fell off the wagon until Dan Reeves came along in 93 where they went to the playoffs.

Dallas drafted some of the worst players ever seen in the 1980's. By 1986 this was a totally over matched team in most areas across the board. Its remarkable what Landry got out of them in 1985 and early 86. They were TERRIBLE.

The '89 Hershal Walker deal, greatest for Dallas, most boneheaded one for Minnesota for three top draft choices that got Dallas three Super Bowls titles and Minnesota no where.

It happened a lot more often back then, I recall it about 4 times a season in the 1980's... Stadiums were smaller then but the fans seemed closer to the field and the stands were steeper. This game isn't a great example of that type of stadium though.
Even as a Cowboys fan I thought that was stupid home field advantage... But there was a rule I think after this season if fans was too loud the home team will be penalized a timeout lol bc I remember Browns got penalized allot

In the regular season, including this 6-2 start, Dallas from 1966-first half 1986 had gone 214-81-2.
The rest of Landry's tenure- 11-28.
(I could say they were 12-43 the rest of the decade, but 1989 was clearly starting over with Jimmy Johnson)
The real turning point was the sack on White. The cowboys were playing well and driving well, and White did not play against the rest of the season.
It's hard to believe three years later, a large portion of this same team would be worse than Jimmy's Hurricanes team. Or so he tells us.

I remember this game as being the one that changed Danny Whites career forever, due to his broken wrist never being the same. Without him, the Cowboys had their first losing season in over 20 years, after starting off as a top ranked offense. The Giants had lost to the Cowboys three straight times, and it was almost a fourth, no thanks to Phil Pozderac. His entire career was plagued with false starts in critical moments. Didn't really matter; because we eventually found out that Steve Pelleur was NOT a starting QB.

The problem was the cowboys TERRIBLE drafts from 1981 on. By the time they got to 1986 there was a clear talent divide between them and the Giants, Redskins, 49ers and Bears. They were totally over matched at the line of scrimmage and had little to no speed on either side of the ball. Landry was such a great coach he would smoke and mirror his way to the playoffs with a veteran QB like White, but it really showed in the playoffs and they consistently got trounced. Once White got hurt in '86 it was over and they were exposed.

I was at this game. Had seats from 1978 to 2019. In 2021 the Giants are garbage and so is the entire NFL for that matter. 1986 was a glorious time.

Landry probably is urged to retire after the 1987 season had that been a normal year rather than the strike year where their record was inflated by the three strike games where most of their guys played and other teams didn't have any of their regular players.
Interesting fact: #71 on Dallas (Mark Tuinei) was a 4th year player who would later block for Aikman during their 3 Super Bowl titles ‘92, ‘93, ‘95. Sadly, he would pass on in ‘99 (from a heroin overdose) at 39, just 2 years after retiring.
This was the beginning of the end for the Landry era. He would be gone by 1988. There were some players in this Cowboys lineup who would win the SB with Jimmy Johnson in 1992: Mark Tuinei, Bill Bates, Nate Newton, Jim Jeffcoat, Mike Saxon.
It's crazy that my cowboys were the number one offense in football. They had Herschel Walker, Tony dorsett. They were six and two. A lot of people picking them to win the super bowl this year, but they fell apart this season and that was the beginning of their like 4 year downfall where they were terrible until they got aikman Emmett and Irving

You must be young. In 76 when it opened it was the premo stadium in the league of which future stadiums were fashioned after. And yes in 86 some stadiums were extremely old and run down.

For many years now it’s embedded into every WRs subconscious to do that no matter what as long as an incompletion occurred.
Coaches are often teaching that to their WR's now even at high school levels.
O started rooting for the Giants ariund '67, as a young boy.
When this turnaround started to happen I could hardly believe it.
