A few questions: Do we treat a robber the same as a loved one? Do we treat the rude the same as the polite? Do we treat the eloquent the same as the the ignorant? The term "white privilege" was coined to dismiss personal character and responsibility. Its insertion into the public lexicon is an attempt to dismiss the degradation of certain cultures. Often, as in this discussion, one of the benefits of "white privilege" highlighted is trust ("not being followed by security"). This is foolishly attributed to skin tone. However, if the professor really wanted to teach critical thinking and logic, the first response would be to ask a substantive question. "Why would the security guard follow anyone?" Answer - to mitigate risk. "How do we identify risk?" Answer - through patterns of behavior and outcomes. So, the lack of trust isn't derived from skin tone but rather the repeated interactions and outcomes experience has garnered. Take a specific culture, remove their media glorifying violence and objectification of women, demonstrate character, cleanup appearance, and engage others eloquently and watch if experiential delta doesn't evaporate... Once again, society attempts to make excuses instead of calling out root causes.

45:50 It’s interesting because the family that I grew up with is off the boat Italian. I don’t think of myself as ‘white’, white’s a color, not a culture. But what’s interesting is that my fiancé is several generations American- she identifies as white. I think it’s less of a “I’m the standard” thinking, and more of a lack of culture. Her family aren’t plugged into their roots- so for her to say she’s Germanic or English would be correct, literally, but not in a cultural sense at all.
