This is just what I needed thank you. I had a terrible carpenter install my back door, the gap on the hinge side was none existent while on the other side the gap was over a quarter inch and bugs where getting in from it.
I had a question, my front door is metal,it closes and opens perfectly, doesn't hang up or nothing however at the bottom corner of the side where the lock is and the knob and all that there is a nice gap, you can actually see daylight during the day and this becomes a huge problem because bugs and all kinds of critters get thru that gap not to mention the heat during winter, whats the proper way to fix this? a extra shim on the bottom?
This is pretty good but in my case the door jamb is rotten and was looking for something temporary to fill the uneven gap at the door header(top). Management is going to rehab this whole apt I'm fixing soon.
For the part where the door is too close on hinge side, it says to shim the hinges attached to door. This will push door toward lock side. Can you accomplish same thing by bending the knuckles attached to the door toward the frame?
I rarely use shim, I look for a 1/8 gap around the door. I use an Allen key long shank side and put it between the hinges and close the door gently, look at your hinges so they don't pop out. It would widen the gap by 1/16. Depending how your door looks that is how you are going to adjust it. Remember 1/16 and 1/16 is a 1/8 . You might just need to adjust two, one on top and middle or vise versa. This works for HMF with commercial hard ware
Use some old credit cards i know true value hardware stores sells plastic ones for interior doors that has the three hole slots, other method i use is bending the knuckles on the hinges lightly & even with a cresent wrench works well.
My door looks like the spine of a 90 year old vegan. The top lock side sits an inch proud of the frame while there is a half inch gap on both the bottoms of lock AND hinge sides. Starting to wonder if the frame was built out of scrap cardboard.
If you have a HMF it should have chimes take them out with a flat head, do one at a time so you don't take off the door completely. If this doesn't work use a 2*4 on the strike side, place at hinge level on all three and push the 2*4 towards the hinge side one at a time. You should have 1/8 Gap on all sides

What if the hinge part has a big gap but there are no spacers or shims? What then?
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Thank you!
Great information if you have a modular door as shown. The last example shown is not so easy on a residential door.
How does recessing a hinge leaf "more" help, if it was already flush?
The most helpful video on how to adjust any door. TY!
Great video. How do you make the bottom tip of the door move up to top tip to close door to frame gap??

I guess no one responded to your question
Did you ever figure this out? I have same problem. Thanks

I'm with R.P. just what I need but who sells them went to Lowes and Home Depot still can't find them.
Contact your local door distributor instead of big box store. They should have them.

I love youtube.
But what if the whole door is sticking on the lockside and theres no shims in the hinges?
you need to recess the hinges into the door frame more.

They're available online. Make sure to use steel shims though if the opening is fire rated.
