I think doing an analysis on the dividend reinvestment over time of quality companies that raise their dividend would be a worthwhile and fair analysis. Dividends are always analyzed as passive income to live off in retirement. The secret to dividends is the reinvestment rather than taking as payment which creates a tangible compounding factor that is not there when a dividend is not paid and you accumulate no further shares . Without one you simply need to rely on the market recognizing value to compound your equity share of the earnings, of which that realization doesn’t always materialize.

@@EverythingMoney I agree with the analysis that throwing money at random dividend kings/aristocrats is nowhere near as good of a strategy as buying a true value stock with a nice dividend to increase your share count while it stays in the dumps. As for stocks with no dividends being more efficient, I agree in a few instances, like Facebook which I own, Amazon Google etc.. with high ROIC and continuous quality projects to reinvest in. However, companies of that quality are very hard to find , the FAANG index highlighted about all of them .

Saying "dividends mean double taxation, it is better to do stock buy backs" is of course nonsense. Stock buy backs result into a higher stock price, which has to be eventually paid for in capital gains tax. In most countries the capital gains tax is higher than the dividend tax. Therefore dividends are in almost every country more tax efficient than stock buy backs.

Sounds like the best of both worlds PLUS its all blue-chip companies. Remember if dividend s are reinvested in a qualified account like a 401k,TSP or Roth you don't have to pay taxes on the dividends. Dividends from a Roth are not taxed.

My main retirement TSP/401k is in funds that are set up to pretty much mirror VTI. That's the VAST majority of my investments, about 90%.
The other 10% of my money goes into my taxable brokerage account that focuses mainly on boring dividend stocks, REITs, and a few BDCs and MLPs. I'm not worried about taxes, I see it as a small money tree thats growing every year with DRIP (Its not set up for auto invest), that I'll never have to sell, unlike my main retirement account. I still have about 14 years to retire so it has time to grow.

Since you don't get taxed on dividends in a Roth IRA, what would be the reason to NOT structure your Roth for dividend paying companies, including these ETF's? If I were to buy a stock with a sub 1% yield I would be expecting some crazy dividend growth and apple is not really doing that either and they should just cut it completely. However, I don't think they should be doing these huge buybacks either since the stock is not really cheap either. I would rather Apple build up that war chest so they could do insane buybacks and acquisitions in the future.

I'm a student with small money so i don't think it's interesting for me and others to focus on high mcap stocks/etf's/ dividend stocks. I won’t invest into companies with massive dilution and I prefer companies who buyback cheap shares but dividends will always be better. You only profit from selling non dividend stocks through subtracting ownership. The real name of the game in wealth is hoarding tons of shares for long periods of time and writing covered calls for income. Also you can make up to 80,000 a year tax free with dividend holdings if married in a taxable account. Partner that with 80,000+ in your IRA and you can really compound. Dividends made Warren’s wealth snowball. Dividends also do wonders for your mental health. Being down 30% on a holding is hard but if they keep paying you to wait you now have cash flow to buy more and average down. Also dividend stocks tend to have far lower betas

I don't like buybacks, for a couple of resons:
    1. Companies will keep buying back shares no matter the price. Otherwise they will signal that their company is overpriced at the moment. Unless your name is Elon Musk, you won't do that. Buying back shares at low valuations and paying dividend at high sounds good but no-one does that in real life.
    2. Management often have stock options. They want the stock price in x years to be as high as possible. Everything else equal, they will lose out on the money payed out as dividend until they use their options.
    3. Companies use buybacks to boost EPS, so investors get the impression that earnings are rising when they are really not. I think this is why buybacks was illegal like 20-30 years ago.
