I have found it so much easier to motivate myself to do something if I think of it as a favor for my future self. I would do it for a friend so why wouldn’t I do it for myself. One day it hit me that I never thank my past self. So now when I notice something past self did I actually say out loud, “Thank you past self.” It’s a little strange, but it is amazing how much it works!
My husband and I have been living minimally for the past three years. We are continuously decluttering. Each year, we try our best to stick to certain goals not only to save and replenish our savings (due to moving and purchasing a new home), but we also want to have more money to dedicate to trips and any bills that may arise with our older cars, house upkeep, etc. We used to spend so much on materialistic items that did not bring us joy in the long run and only caused financial burden. Our journey so far has led us to really appreciate what we already have and narrow down items to what we really love and use often. Thank you for your channel and resources! Your channel is a great support tool for us.
I've noticed that after decluttering for several years I started doing this as I would come across items or when getting dressed. I was doing a deep clean on the holiday and actually decluttered a lot of items.
Nice shirt. The color looks nice on you. The charger story happened to me yesterday! I ignored it but, thanks to you, I will take care of it today. Thank you!❤
I’ve done that with the jumper situation before and started to recognise it, I now put those types of clothing straight in a bag to donate. I definitely needed this video though, I have a ton of leads I have no idea what they’re for and I’ve held onto them 🤦🏻♀️😂
Thank you Elin. This is helpful to know to declutter when the opportunity comes across our path. Seize the opportunity. Declutter & savour the win. Be thankful for the new space created. 🥰
Excellent breaking this down and sharing the terms! I am purchasing way less, and the items no longer serving purpose are being let go more quickly. It's easy to keep up and not be tied down so much.
Here is an example of an inflection point moment I had just today! I was getting dressed this morning and found a sweater dress that I hadn’t worn in a while. It was a dress I got online from a Macy’s Black Friday/cyber Monday sale in 2020. At that point in my life I had graduated college earlier that year and was working my first full time job, and was trying to find more “work appropriate” clothing. Since I bought it online I didn’t have a great sense of the measurements, and while it did fit on my body, it came up shorter than I wanted because I’m really tall. It also didn’t really seem to flatter my body type well either. I decided to wear it today though since I still liked the color and pattern, and was hoping to give it another chance before making a decision on it. The dress felt ok, but not amazing. Also since the sweater dress was a half sleeve length and it is freezing cold out today, I had to wear a long sleeve cardigan over it to make it warmer (but the half sleeve length still felt awkward). I decided today I think it is best to declutter it, since it’s one of those things that looks nice on the rack but doesn’t necessarily look/feel great on my body, and I felt like I was just wearing it because I had already purchased the item and it existed in my closet even though I barely wore it and had to make a conscious effort to decide to wear it.
Hi Elin. Could you tell me the color and the brand of paint you used on your house. And also did you paint some of your furniture and what color and brand. I love it and this would be so helpful to me as I am buying a new house.
Good points! For me, the take away is to stop myself when I am putting things away, specially when it's kind of hard, and think, is it even worth putting away??? I need to declutter a lot from "deep storage"... and I think most of those items have not been touched in a long time, which means it's probably safe to let go. I will keep thinking of putting away anything as an inflection point from now on! In the last few weeks, I've told myself if I have to pick up certain items myself, I may as well throw them out (nerf darts, random lego pieces, pens, papers, etc). It's really hard when your family does not get it. But I can't keep calling people back to pick up. I'll just warn them for real, if something is important to them, they better not treat it as garbage, because if I pick it up myself, it's going to be for the last time.
Kids and pets make lives difficult to keep declutterred. I have been known to ignore all papers from teachers (oops), but on the other hand I am putting more responsibility on my kids since I have my own stuff and issues to deal with. When they start leaving things around (clothes, toys, whatever), and no one claims it, I tell them that the items will be getting donated to the kids that want it. Now that they are teenagers, I deal with random plates, bowls, and drinkware that have science experiments growing in them (the fungus on the old food), and they have gradually started wanting to make their own areas presentable to their friends. Have hope - they do start to take ownership as they get older
I love minimalism and consider myself a minimalism. But let me tell you what I am NOT minimal with. TRASH CANS. I have a trash can in each bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. I need one for my front porch. Lol. I have one in my car. I have a mug on my dresser for trash like matches from lighting candles, cotton balls, q tips etc. I recently set up a 3rd receptacle in my bedroom for things I want to burn and I have a basket for things I want to burn in the laundry room. In a previous home where I had a larger bedroom I had an additional trash mug on my desk.

Your house is beautifully decorated and simple. Love it. I wish though that you had some videos on bringing up your baby.
Another great video! This gave me the motivation I needed!
You’re my favorite UA-camr!
So fantastic to have it explained in these terms. Thank you!
I love this concept!
Thank you, Elon for giving it a name! So good 🎉
Elin, dumb spell check 😮
Elin, you are awesome and so are your videos!
Good talk! Thanks and Happy 2025!
This is genius omg!! I’ve been doing it but I didn’t have a name to the inflection point idea
Great video Elin! So helpful. I find I do this quite often.
Really helpful, thank you Elin 😊
Thank you for doing a video on a fresh new way of looking at things…Brilliant
All the videos out there just seem to be saying the same.
Appreciate your videos.
Your skin is gorgeous. Could you do a video on your minimalist skin care routine ?

Story of why I have so much paper clutter…
Where in Minnesota do you live? I also live in Minnesota and am a big fan. ❤
OK seriously… where did you get that shirt ❤
I wonder too!❤️❤️
Also wonder where the necklace is from?✨
