What do Lotus Hops Taste Like? SMaSH Beer Experiment

  • Here's a review of a SMaSH beer of Lotus hops from Hopsteiner.
    This beer had a very intriguing and hard to exactly nail down flavor and aroma. We both really enjoyed this hops character but it was very hard to say exactly what it was like. Mike mentioned some candied characters as well as maybe a hint of vanilla.
    Hopsteiner labels the hop as having notes of orange, vanilla, berries and tropical fruit.
    After the video shoot was over, the beer had warmed up significantly and we noted a bit of an orange creamsicle flavor that was pretty nice.

    Lotus, El Dorado and Azacca is one of my favorite hop combos that I’ve ever brewed with. It yields a lot of peach ring, candy-like flavor. Cheers!

      I played with Azacca and El Dorado over the summer in my session IPA experiments. Now that I've tasted Lotus those sound like great combos. Cheers! -Mike

      @@zekehorton8545 It’s been a while, so I may be a little off. But, knowing how I usually tend to hop, I think it was a 1:1:1 ratio between the three. For 5.5 gallon batches, I usually try to use 12-16 oz of hops depending on how intense the constituent varieties are (ie, I might use 12oz if I’m using all cryo or lupomax). If you pair up that hop combo with a really stone fruity yeast like Verdant IPA or Conan, you can really drive the peachyness.

    I loved lotus when I tired the last year at BrauBeviale in Germany! They were doing a sensory and tasting poll of the participants, and yeah it was hard to really put it in a box.

    What would your hop schedule be for an APA with Lotus and Sabro?
    Planning a brew with...
    81.5% Pale Malt
    10% Red X
    8% Caravienna
    .5% Carafa 1
    Planning on fermenting with Imperial Independence A14 or A20 Citrus.

      Same as it always is for me. I shoot for a 10 minute addition and then a FO addition as I start to chill. I don't deviate too much from that but depends on what I want. I usually add a little something at 60 minutes to get some sort of bitterness. If I want a traditional APA then I like 40-45IBUs at 60 minutes. If I am going for a more NEAPA I might back down to 15-20 IBUs at 60min. I just think the really heavy late hopping still benefits from some 60 minute hops in pale ale styles. For NEIPA, I forgo the 60min addition because the late additions are so large. Hope that helps. Cheers! -Mike

    When you’re putting together a SMaSH recipe, do you generally always do the same thing no matter the hop? EG: 15 min hops, flame out, and dry hop timings.
    Or do you tune the recipe to the expectations for the hops?
    Also I rarely see people SMaSHing to explore a malt, and I wonder what kind of hop you’d use of your focusing on malt. German maybe?

      If the hop is known for late addition magic, then I follow the schedule you outlined in your comment. If the hop has low AA%, then I will add it earlier in the boil. The malt SMaSH idea should be employed in a triangle test/comparison. It takes more time/money to do. - John

    I usually bottle condition all my beers because I don't have a keg setup. I was thinking of getting a pressurized growler like that to have some bottled and some in the pressurized growler. Did you actually force carb it in the growler?

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  3 роки тому

      John has been force carbonating in it with good results. The cartridge inside seems to last for one carbonation and one dispense, but it does seem to be getting tight towards the end of the dispense. And there is no easy way to replace the cartridge without reopening it. The beer wouldn't go flat in that case, but you are opening it up to air if you HAD to change it. Cheers! -Mike

    Hey guys, what did you change to fill the growler? I´m wondering about getting one

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jef, I did two things. I filled the UKeg with sanitizer solution (iodophor) and pushed it out using the CO2 cartridge through the tap. Then, I opened the top and siphoned the beer into the growler as gently and quickly as I could. After it was filled, I put the cap back on, turned the dial to add more CO2 and then burped the growler. I repeated that process twice and then put it in my fridge. I didn't touch it until the day we shot the video. It may have been overkill but I wanted to do all I could to reduce oxidation. - John
