Accessibility mechanics and assist modes are the biggest heroes when it comes to universalizing fun in videogames. I think some developer really overlook the potential of those features. Great video!
Hey Omega! They definitely go a long way into sharing the gaming experience on a wider scale, and I agree wholeheartedly that cannot be forgotten. Mark Brown has a terrific series on all of those features and even brings it to a wider scope with disability. Good stuff. Thanks for checking this one out!
It's been on my list, but for some reason, I keep jumping over it or something. Weird stuff haha In all seriousness, thanks for checking this one out, DP!
All really good points. Also for co-op party games, I think having roles that are easy/simple is important. I was playing Overcooked with my friends recently, and one person didn't have a controller. But she could still chop food and wash dishes, even if it's harder to navigate through the crazy level environments. Same idea for people who don't play games as often. Anyway great job man!
Hey Nathan! An appeal for a less experienced crowd is the backbone of these titles for sure - and to your point, Overcooked does a great job at hectic inclusivity. Thanks for checking this one out!
It's a bit hard to say that I'm a fan of partygames nowadays since it seems like any multiplayer-oriented game can qualify to that genera. Anyway, back on topic, great video as always and I hope you'll go back into multiplayer games since there's potential for a bunch more with this :P
Hey Spongyoshi! There's definitely been a trend towards this type of design, especially with Switch multiplayer games. I'd love to talk more about multiplayer in the future - thanks for the recommendation. Good to hear from you!
The Switch has definitely worked hard to make sure its library suits the ideals of the system fostering engaging, friendly play. On the note of the allies in Mario Party; the implementation of variable dice is long overdue, so its great to see. The issue is they are not limited, so you can blast straight from star to star, and have the equivalent of a whole extra player in some of the minigames. There are serious mechanical advantages to something that is simply given to you.
Hey Sebasculin! That’s a good point - the mini game advantage is kind of poor design - I think leaving those to the skill and player agency is best, instead of random impacts from the board carrying over. Thanks for checking this one out!
Hey Bill! The feedback loop there is definitely a huge part of these party game designs, for better or for worse haha. Thanks for checking this one out!
I'd have liked to see Jackbox's complete device agnosticism, allowing non-gamers to use devices they're familiar and comfortable with (i.e. their phones) as inputs to the game make the list, as long as one device is able to connect to a TV to host the game, everything's good. Great list all around, though.
Hey Torqegood! The allies system definitely makes you fly around the maps, for better or for worse. It’s a weird concept, because folks with a lot of ally luck with blaze through, but others get lost in the dust in any other kind of map. Thanks for checking this one out!
All i hope for in super mario party is dlc (free, of course) with more characters, boards, minigames and such. For example, we should get a luigi's mansion dlc with king boo, e.gadd, polterpup and maybe a portrait ghost or gooigi as characters, a ghost house board and a bunch of minigames. Oh, and king boo needs to have his lm2 design - his coolest appearence so far. Btw king boo for smash ultimate
Hey dededelete this! Seeing more hope for the game after its release would be great - I think it really deserves some extra content. Here's hoping for the Aces model applied here Thanks for checking this one out!
Speedrunners is my jam! I love that game, and it disappoints me constantly that it's not on Switch yet. Haven't played Knight Squad, but I'll add it to my holiday rotation for playing with friends. Thanks for checking this one out, Obi!
Maybe asymmetric role taking is also a "for everyone to have fun" thing? For not as skillful players they can still take the easier secondary role to join the fun. Though I'm not super sure what competitive co-op game would be a good example. I'm kinda thinking the Cappy.
Will you take a look at Kirby bosses, and the discussion of fun vs. challenging bosses? Kirby Star Allies' recent update added some pretty tough bosses (by Kirby standards, anyway), while most other bosses are pretty easy, so that might be a neat thing to discuss. (Imma be honest, I just wanna hear you take on it :D )
Hey Xiang! For sure, Nintendo really gets this stuff. The Switch as a console further emphasizes these designs too. Good stuff. Thanks for checking this one out!

Now we need piranha plant in Mario party
That'd be sweet - just need to downgrade Petey from boss status to get him in.
Thanks for checking this one out, DF!
The distribution of item boxes depending how close you are from the first place sound like a pretty good economic system to me.

You're not wrong...but the small board sizes for the new mario party game isn't designed for the increased movement.

Snowman gaming but its not obcessed with indies.
