AKSHUALLY... the name of León doesn´t come from the animal, it is a corruption of the name of a Roman camp in the area, Legio VII Gemina.
Extra pedantry bonus: if a coat of arms represents the name of the place, they are called "canting arms" or "rebus."

@ჶ Troopa3xd ჶ We agree, it does mean lion. But the origin of the name is not that. They have a lion in reference to the name, which itself is a corruption of "Legio."

I want to clarify some things. In the Spanish War of Succession it wasn't just Catalonia that sided with the Austrias, but the entirety of the Crown of Aragon (that being the Kingdom of Aragon, the Principality of Catalonia, the Kingdom of Valencia and the Kingdom of Majorca, as well as its territories outside of modern Spain which were lost after the war) and the Nueva Planta decrees were imposed on all of it, banning not only Catalan but also Aragonese and abolishing the Crown of Aragon along with the fueros, or laws, of its regions and imposing Castilian language and law instead.

I must say, being there, that "mossos d'esquadra" did certainly not just stand by, in fact, they closed more polling stations than both national police and Guardia Civil combined, albeit with far less violence. There is also an error as Jose Miguel arenas doesn't come from Catalonia, he is from Mallorca. Finally PSOE although somewhat opened to pacts on some issues with pro-independence parties, is absolutely opposed to independence and any form of consultation on the matter.

Let me correct you, he has been imprisoned solely because of tweets and songs. The prison (+ €30k) sentence is for "glorification of terrorism" and "insults to the royal crown", "crimes" that have consisted on tweets and songs only. The rest of the issues he's been on trial for have been resolved in other manners. Review your sources. This is the same story of always with Spain, juditial warfare. A fascist power that never lost its strategic position after Franco's death. But they will fall, of course they will, along with the monarchy and the rest of the parasites of this fascist regime.

    • @VG-re1bj
      @VG-re1bj 3 роки тому +6

Some of the sentences for the crimes he committed before (assault, threats, etc...) were "suspended", others are pending. For the ones already judged, that means the punishment would not take effect if one does not misbehave and does not commit more crimes, felonies or whatever. He doubled down and now he faces a rolling snowball.
He is NOT facing prison because of the offenses to the royal family (and please, the non Spanish readers understand that "offenses" here does not mean singing songs about the king being fat, ugly or stupid but more on the line of actually publicly stating he is a criminal and accusing him of whatever without any evidence. Under Spanish law this is actually a felony if you do so to anybody, be him a king or not. But when the crime is committed against the king, it is specially typified as the king is an institutional figure), he has actively and publicly showed support and sympathy for terrorist organisations. It is debatable if this should be considered a crime or not, but we cannot forget that the main advocates for the criminalisation of speech in Spain and outside Spain is actually the radical left. I can only see this as an act of poetic justice.

Just some notes as a catalan independence supporter myself, Pablo Hasél and the other rappers imprisoned are not really part of the independence movement, but some far left-wing antimonarchy movement. It's easy to get them mashed together because they're catalan but they don't have much in common apart from you know, being prosecuted by the same state.
Another thing you forgot to mention about the Reaper's War, is that, after siding with the french in order to kick out the Spanish, the french army was sent to Catalonia and basically did even worse than the spanish soldiers, so they switched sides again, some say that they tried to remain independent but with enemies on all sides that was basically not possible so Spain recovered part of Catalonia while the french took the north (as part of the Treaty of Utrech which involved basically every single european monarchy at the time and also the reason Gibraltar is not part of Spain).
Also, when Franco decided to industrialize Catalonia and send millions of spanish speaking workers there, he did so in purpose (and he wasn't the first to try to do so, as in the early 1800s there was also lots o migration from regions such as Andalusia and Murcia), so that the immigrants would dilude catalan national identity. While it is debatable if the move payed off, the percentage of native catalan speakers in Catalonia was certainly reduced from 80%+ to almost 40% now.
Lastly, the PSOE is not wiling to negotiate anything about independence. They MAY, and this is also very unlikely, support some sort of autonomy reforms, but that is also not really plausible as the Spanish Constitution would need to be reformed (2/3rds of the Spanish Parliament votes needed and Catalan seats represent 48/350).
The reality is they cannot allow Catalonia to go out of Spain, as the loss would most certainly bankrupt them, and so they will try to keep us United whatever the cost, and whatever the % of support for independence.
Congrats on making such a nice video :D

I've travelled and worked with a few people from Catalonia and they were all happy to have a candid, adult conversation about its independence status. I guess this in itself is a fair insight into part of the culture there, what surprised me was the range of opinions shared, even amongst close groups of friends. Only one of them was of full Spanish heritage and he didn't really care either way (as he felt like a part of both Spain and Barcelona) and both were bittersweet for him. Two were of 50/50 Spanish/Catalan heritage, one said he felt Spanish not Catalan and didn't care so much, the other felt Catalan to the core and was fully pro-independence. The 'full' Catalans I knew either didn't care so much or were pro-independence (a couple were HARDcore for independence) except for one girl that wanted to stay because "Espana is fucked without us", lolz. The fact that they were all good, intelligent people that could have a civil conversation on a touchy subject like this, without it souring relationships, was impressive to me (in this day and age anyways). This was an excellent video. As a catalan (pro-independence) point of view I found it very balanced, and you talked about pretty much everything you had to.
    There's just 2 things I'd change:
-As a minor change, the latest election graph was somewhat confusing, PSOE + VOX bars look taller than all the pro-independece parties bar, which may lead to believe unionism was more popular than secessionism. Pro-independece parties got an historic 51% of the vote and a huge majority in the parliament.
-As to Pablo Hasel's detention, it's right that many catalans support him for the national aspect but I'd say more people do support him for being republican (against the monarchy). There's many places in Spain, very unionist places, that also demonstrated for him.
And finally, something I would've added in the video is the imprisionment of the entire catalan government after the 1st of October independence referendum, some people like Carles Puigdemont escaped into exile seeking EU's protection, but those who didn't are still imprisioned, with senteces of up to 13 years. That fueled the pro-independence move a good deal from 2015 until today.

I've been living here for 20 years but I'm not even European, so I hope I'm not too biased on this: I can tell you that the independist movement wasn't even that big until recently, just a few outcasts wanted it. You can make all these historical points but actually very few people cared about independence 10 years ago. It exploded on the media when they discovered corruption schemes by a group of key Catalan politicians like Jordi Pujol ( all of Spain is ridded with its own corruption, nothing new ) and these politicians started pushing a strong independentist propaganda and identitarian politics through the local government (Generalitat) which controls local education and TV, they revived the discussion about dictator Franco's repression, started suddenly caring about their unique identity (which is basically building human castles and speaking their language, nothing really that unique or different from Spain) and started claiming Spain is fascist state. You have to know that, according to polls, the majority voting for independence are the more wealthy people, both the independentist right and independentist left (curiously even more the far left, the CUP) and they are the ones with more voice and control over public discussion. Catalonia is very industrialized, it always was an industrial leader historically speaking compared to the rest of Spain, so it has its own group of very influential people who just dont like having Madrid make the decissions when they could just bribe the local leaders, Madrid gets in their way.
As I see it, this movement is mostly recent, mostly nationalistic identitarian, and it has been mostly orchestrated by Catalan oligarchs.
I've discussed this with many Catalan friends and we agree on this, while recognizing that this narrative convinces people because there are still open wounds from the Franco repression that never healed, and the PP party is a direct, living child of Franco's era. So there are always strong reactions when that topic comes out. That aversion is easily exploited to push identitarian populism. Arguments for independence are mostly emotional. Catalans do not suffer, they have super high standards of living, quality of life above the Spanish average, good economy and have full rights to express their identity today, so they claimimg they are being oppressed today rarely gets support anywhere in the world. It's rich kids playing the oppression card.

From a catalan point of view:
Catalanism was always there, there wasn't just the need for independece. As said in the video, the pro-independence move mainly started with the "Estatut d'Autonomia", when the majority that voted it, saw how their votes didn't mean shit and got changed for less power for the region. Since Spain didn't satisfy the needs of the catalan people, independence started being something to consider. These days the pro-independence movement is just the old 'catalanism' but claiming more power (actually, all of it).
Feel free to answer. I won't discuss about all the catalan nationalist being orchestred by the burgeosi, since it's basically nonsense and we wouldn't agree on a single bit.

    • @El_Psy_Kongroo_
      @El_Psy_Kongroo_ 3 роки тому +3

Catalan rich kids are not the ones pushing for independence, that's completely wrong.
Actually it would be the other way around, the biggest business owners disavow the independence movement as it is prompt to cause instability, and that's a no no for business.
However it is indeed true that you can associate moderately wealthy middle class with independence supporters.
That's explained in the video, during Franco's dictatorship there was an important migration of Spanish southerners to the north in seek for better paid industrial jobs, mainly Catalonia which was thriving economically. It is also known that Franco himself had this plan of homogenising the country, to make every part of Spain more "Spanish" and united, and to do so there were efforts from the government to encourage people to migrate all around the country. From these "planned migrations" the most important was to bring Spanish speakers into Catalonia and so be able to reintegrate the region, which had proved to be very rebellious before and during the civil war, and was also left a little bit empty due to the exiles caused by the war.
The result of this MASSIVE (it's not an exaggeration) migration is that most of these new-coming workers ended up gathering and living in the zones were industry was developing, mainly around the already existent Barcelona's industry and other port cities. Nowadays it is known as "Barcelona's industrial belt", a series of highly populated cities with a staunch majority of people descendent from this Spanish immigrants from this epoch. These people tend to be workers that earn low wages and still fill up for most of the industry of the region, they are mainly Spanish speakers and they represent the core of Spanish unionism in Catalonia.
In contrast it is in the rural areas and historical cities where most Catalan descendent people live, scattered throughout all the Catalan territory but much less densely populated, these people tend to speak Catalan and vote for independence.
So if you compare these two types of people that you can find in Catalonia nowadays its obvious that the ones who descent from migrants tend to have less properties and less family support than the original population, hence tend to be poorer. That's why Catalans who support independence are, as a rule of thumb, generally wealthier than Catalans who support unionism.
A good way to check that what I've just wrote is correct is comparing maps of where and what Catalans have voted in elections since democracy was restored. For instance:
Map of latest elections in Catalonia by town: www.eldiario.es/catalunya/mapa-resultados-elecciones-catalanas-14f-municipio-municipio_1_7218588.html

Note that we had just gotten out of a brutal dictatorship that prohibited the Catalan language and had attempted to destroy Catalan identity. You should get informed before talking. The 2017 "referendum" was not valid for several reasons:
    1) In Spain, the Constitution does not offer the possibility to divide the country; however, the Spanish Constitution admits any kind of change, so the constitutional process is to change it to include that possibility.
    2) I don't know how in other countries works, but in Spain, the money of the different autonomous communities is shared among the other communities to help each other. So, as well as many autonomous communities have benefited from Cataluña's money, Cataluña's has also benefited from the rest of Spain's money. So we have a conception that all Spain territory is of all Spanish people; and not that your community is yours and not of the others.
    3) Before taking place the "referendum", the Constitutional Court warned Cataluña's government that it was anti-constitutional (because the State government is the only one with the power to do referendum, among other issues).
    4) While voting, there were no control of the voters, so you could vote once, and then go to another place to vote for s second time (in fact some people did this).
    5) 16 years old people were allowed to vote. In Spain the legal age is 18, because it is considered that you are more mature an less easy influenced than when you are younger.
6)Only 43'3% of the population voted. The people that didn't want to get the independence did not vote. The voting was biased. To illustrate this, in the last elections, the most voted party was PSOE, a not independentist party; and, in total, not independentist parties obtained 1332337 votes, while the independentist parties got 1357696. Nothing to do with a 90% in favour of independency.

On top of that, there is this constant paternalism that suggests that Catalonia would have never developed if it hadn't been for Spain. To me, all of this sounds like Spanish supremacism, and it is rather the opposite of the multiculturalism that you say you process. Diversity in 2021? Ok then, perhaps it is time to teach in Catalan or Basque in schools from Madrid, or to make them official languages in the EU, or to have armed forces than don't vote massively for Vox, or to not constantly depose Catalonian presidents and detain rappers with biased judges, or perhaps to allow Catalonians to FREELY choose what is their political relationship with Spain in a peaceful way... It’s essential that you check the facts before creating a video like this. Pablo Hasel was NOT condemned because of ‘freedom of speech’ issues. He was incarcerated because he assaulted a witness and he beat a journalist, as well as other things such as praising terrorism. I think you should take this more seriously than just reading the newspaper headlines from misinformed media.

Really like your video! It good to see someone just present the facts without a political agenda.
As you asked for opinions here is mine:
I sympathize with the Catalan cause as I was born in Barcelona and my family is from Navarre and the Basque Country. However I don't think that independence is the solution. It is important to preserve unity and solidarity with all people regardless of nationality or cultural background. Especially in Europe where even once powerful Nations like Germany and France no longer play a major role in World politics, smashed between the world powers. Considering this I think that the hole Idea of the independent European Nation-state is obsolete.
I disagree with the imprisonment of Catalan politicians and artist because I'm a firm believer in free speech and dialogue. With dialogue between the Catalans and the Spanish I think a compromise can be found. It is obvious that the monorachy as a Relic of the medieval age is no longer viable. It is obvious that a modern Spain should ambrese Republicanism and reorganize itself into a federated State.

I think the video is very well documented and interesting! Albeit, as a spanish (so I'm clearly biased) I will say I think quoting the 92% pro independence referendum figure early in the video and not correcting them until like 20 minutes in is a bit midleading. After all those are the figures supported by the pro-independence side, who clearly have an agenda on the matter, as it's their whole thing. It's a bit like saying there wasn't any referendum at all because the unionist will say the entire thing was illegal and thus didn't happen. Also a sidenote, I find that people overreact to the whole Pablo Hasél thing. I personally don't agree with him being condemned because of it, but almost every country with a monarchy has laws about not being able to insult it (As they're considered a symbol of the state/nation), including the Netherlands for example, so it's not that Spain is some authoritarian backwater cracking down on free speech. It's just that here it's more controversial due to the monarchy itself being more controversial.
In any case, good work! I just wished this all wasn't as complex and heated as to having to make 30+ min long videos about it, haha.
