      Ya but you all have to be careful and monitor liver function in tests. Because the skin always looks good vegan in the beginning but i have known at least 2 vegans maybe 3 or ex vegans who had serious skin problems caused by liver problems after being vegan for 4-6 years. The range of amino acids to feed the liver some more rare in plant foods like glycine glutamine and precursors to glutathione are low in plant foods. Anyway both of them were devote vegans even having their own website promoting veganism and organic vegetables. sprouts ect with speakers and writers that could add their info on the website but only if they were promoting veganism. And they still did this when they had to change from the diet because of their life threatening liver situation. Just look around for people you will find what i found. Or maybe in Canada its too cold to be vegan. But PHD in nutition Chris Masterjohn also had a life threatening situation eating vegan and regained his health eating meat. And he is not fat. Its one sided information. There are so many people who do their best to eat perfect but fail on vegan diets.

      Stephano Gold Just water. Last year I lost a ton of weight way too quickly and then had a break down and was put on meds that made me gain over 30+ lbs. and now I'm overweight and can't seem to lose it. I know it takes exercise but the weight is still hard to get off. I'm off meds now and I mostly eat really healthy fruits and starches, I guess I need to completely stop eating junk but I moved back in with my mom and she buys so much vegan junk. >

    I do best on Brown rice and beans and potatoes-- I buy all of the best and this is what keeps my blood sugar at a manageable level-- I do not eat dairy or meat or oil, or processed and refined sugar. It was white sugar and aspartame with the dairy that made me unable to walk. Today I am feeling much much better-- THANKS!

    As a high carb vegan, my health issues didn't go away until I eliminated wheat & corn from my diet. Now when I eat them, it makes me feel sick & tired and I had other minor problems such as stuffy nose, joint pains, keratosis pilaris, bags under my eyes, which have now all disappeared.
    I do fine on spelt though.

    How about we add raw vegan as another distraction. Many people get sucked in to believing that a raw vegan diet is the healthiest way to be. From what I have seen there is no good evidence that raw vegan is any healthier than a healthy cooked food vegan diet. Look at how many people end up giving up a raw diet. Even some promoters of raw veganism aren't raw anymore. If raw were so great and healthy people would be able to stick with it. Starches are something most (many?) people can stick with.
    I wonder how fruit cultivation compares to starch cultivation from an environmental standpoint?

    • @rawmark

      purplemutantas Agreed. In fact, there's a guy who I respect for his support of water distillation but then he starts talking about raw foods and all this b.s. that you get brainwashed into believing if you ever try a raw vegan lifestyle. And he makes some outlandish claims about youthful appears because of water distillation and other things I won't address. Funny that i watched a video of him from a few years back and another dated 2013 and his neck looks like that of a 65 year old man.

    I've been vegan for 8 years, but struggle keeping myself off vegan junk-food (cookies, cakes, oily foods). Since going on holiday this year in Sweden and having all of my favourite vegan baked goods, crisps, ice cream, etc. for 3 weeks, I haven't been able to shed the 3 kg I gained as a result (despite hiking and biking lots during the summer and autumn). I'd say I'm relatively active. Although I sit during working hours, I don't have a car, and I walk and bike most places if I can (and use public transport when it's too far). Now I've decided to go on a healthy, whole-foods, plant-based diet a week ago, and have already come down 1.5 kg in a week (WITH NO ADDED EXERCISE). Also, my mood has been so good and my energy levels excellent! This is such a great way of eating. Also, cravings are completely gone within a couple of days. Now I really don't even want to cheat on this way of eating, because if I do, I know my cravings will come back.

    Nonsense. My girlfriend went from SAD diet to eating non-organic GMO fruits and vegetables (couldn't afford the expensive organic produce), and all of her health problems subsided one by one. She's healthier now than she's ever been. I'm not saying GMO is good, but it obviously isn't as big a problem as people make it out to be.

  • @benfaust
    @benfaust 10 років тому +64

    I love Dr. McDougall's work! I must strongly disagree, however, with the idea that GMO is just a distraction.
    First of all, it's been shown to cause severe and life-threatening problems, and many doctors have taken their patients off all GMO. My wife and I realized that's why we couldn't tolerate corn (severe digestive issues) -- because we'd had non-organic, and it was GMO. When we learned about genetic modification, we tried some organic corn, and had no problems with it whatsoever.
    Secondly, it doesn't just sit there in a GMO farmer's field, but spreads itself to neighboring farms, sometimes 50 miles or more away; and once that neighbor's crop is contaminated, it can't be "uncontaminated." As much as one-third of organic corn loads now test positive for GMOs at a low level. "Ears of corn may have a handful of kernels that test positive. All we know is it's becoming an increasingly difficult issue."
    Monsanto has sued hundreds of farmers after the farmers' crops were infected, and therefore the property of Monsanto. If the brakes aren't somehow placed on Monsanto's efforts to eventually own the food supply, they'll succeed.
    If you don't mind removing corn, soy, and whatever else they choose, from the world's safely edible food supply, then keep on ignoring or downplaying GMO. It is a MAJOR issue.

    • @TurboDally
      @TurboDally 10 років тому +1

      "...GMO...it's been shown to cause severe and life-threatening problems..."
      Do you have evidence of this? I'm having difficulty believing you on another note- your demonisation of an entire technology, not shoddy corporate practises, but the technology. So I'm curious to know/see what kind of evidence you have other than anecdote.
      "Monsanto has sued hundreds of farmers after the farmers' crops were infected, and therefore the property of Monsanto."
      This goes both ways, as farmers have also sued Monsanto because of contamination because of GMOs.

    • @benfaust
      @benfaust 10 років тому +7

      TurboDally Yes, and good for the farmers for fighting back. If I was a farmer and my crop got contaminated, I'd sue them too. That's reasonable. If I was a farmer and their stuff blew over into my field by no fault of my own and then THEY sued ME? Do you really think that's equivalent?
      And does it matter whether it's the technology or just corporate practices? It can take the equivalent of 20+ years of testing to uncover potential problems caused, and if we get it wrong, we could have contaminated the whole food supply before finding out (it could take centuries to clean up all the GE corn and soy crops in the world today, and trillions of dollars). We should work with nature, instead of trying to change it. When we do the latter, we always manage to mess things up.
      Here are just three articles and one site covering some of the studies proving GE is unsafe. It's incredibly easy to find countless more.

      Patricia Williamson My step mother had me on a diet like keto when I was a kid. I was always hungry. All I took to school for lunch was a package of lunch meat. I'm still over weight. I been plant based for almost two months now. My sugar level has been between 90-116. When before it was 127-130. A week ago I was kind of hungry for cheese and pepperoni pizza. And chicken that night. My sugar level the next day went back up to 127. I almost gone off of plant based. I said nope. The next day I went back on it, ate, beans, pasta, fruit, soft pretzels. Checked my sugar level agin the next day. It went back down to 101. So I am a firm believer now that Plant Base eating works. :)

    McDougall is not saying to focus attention on animal products at the expense of GMOs. He is saying NOT to focus on the Paleo nonsense, the gluten-free craze, or the GMO situation (which all the research indicates is a red herring), and instead to focus on basing your diet on whole starches and other plant foods.

    I have been a Vegan for almost 3 years. We switched over to the high carb low fat diet about 6 weeks ago. Strangely enough, I suddenly had the energy to start working out. Concentration and mood also improved. High carb was what we were missing on the vegan diet. Dr John McDougall has had a tremendous impact on our lives. Oh, did I mention that I am losing weight (fat) and building muscle. In the past even on the SAD diet it was tiresome to work out and results came slow. secondly his assumption that people saying they are gluten intolerant shouldn't say it unless they truly are is odd, because reports say that the more people that go gluten free, the more gluten free options there will be for those who actually suffer from ciliac disease.

      It's like when someone says "Oh, can you remove the almonds from my slice of cake? I'm allergic, I'll break out in hives if I eat nuts". Then people think it's only a minor danger to people with nut allergies even though some people will go into anaphylactic shock and die in minutes if they consume even a small amount of nut oil by accident. It's like desensitizing the public to the real dangers for that one percent with real intolerance.

    • @katieholder5528
      @katieholder5528 10 років тому +3

      @Lin: So because we assume that people are too fucking stupid to understand that people have a variety of responses to allergies, that person has to just live with hives? It's not okay to avoid foods that reduce your quality of life?

    • @LinGin91

    I agree with McDougall that plant-based diets are healthier. What he neglected to say about "Wheat Belly" is that today's wheat has been altered by bathing wheat seeds with sodium azide (a poisonous gas). The book was more about eating poison than about eating gluten as Mr. McDougall has suggested. Does that mean McDougall is in support of eating poison? Why can't we just eat a plant-based diet that is not genetically altered by humans? That sounds like a healthier choice to me. That said, I did like McDougall's slideshow on all the low-carb guru's showing that they were fat, so McDougall is not completely out of the ball park with his suggestions.

    • @purplemutantas
      @purplemutantas 9 років тому

      The Guru We can't eat food that isn't altered by humans because of this thing called civilization. The plant foods we have now aren't the same as the plant foods that ere available in the wild. If I am not mistaken wild potatoes were toxic. It took intervention by humans to make potatoes edible.

    • @donriffel8005
      @donriffel8005 9 років тому

      I agree that taking poisons "out" of a plant is civilized. However, putting poisons "in" to a plant to improve yield is not civilized, which is what my comment was about. Humans can intervene for good or for bad. You cannot lump all interventions into one category.

    Come on people... HE IS NOT SAYING BUY GMO FOODS! He's saying don't make that an excuse to eat trash! Focus on eating the right things first... THEN you can start nit-picking details. He doesn't say anything about eating raw either. This is a beginner's guide to smartening up about your diet. He makes it very clear. Once you get to the point where you're eating vegan... THEN proceed to avoid GMOs, buy organic, and buy local. But those are ADVANCED dietary concerns.

    In 1995 a book was written called" the good calorie diet by Phillip Lipetz" and then he wrote another book called "naturally thin and powerful" which talked about the like between serotonin and the proper foods. Lipetz was the first person to talk about the glycemic index whereas only diabetics understood it. The book was highly scientific, so it was not a great hit. But he even thought that corn and white potatoes were too "sweet" and raised the blood sugar. Rice cakes were bad. some things were worse than table sugar, back then he even brought up high fructose corn syrup. He also didn't want people to eat too much fat including cheese dairy and eggs (sparingly) and maybe a little meat (sparingly) The good news is pasta is made a certain way that makes it digest slower and is a "good calorie". He explained how too much meat will eventually raise your blood sugar also. People that came from poor countries were thin til they came to America and could afford meat and animal products.

    I have been eating plant based for 3.5 years and have lost lots of weight and I have kept the weight off, unlike friends that have been on "sugar free" "calorie counting" and "paleo" diets where they cannot sustain the diet over the long term. A low fat, plant based lifestyle just makes sense. I have had friends come to me wanting advice on weight loss that say " but I could never give up meat or dairy products". These food have become an addiction, just like smoking, for our over weight population.

    Wheat (through gliadin and WGA, the wheat lectin) causes leaky gut for everyone to some extent, not just for celiac. That is often why someone will suddenly experience intolerence or allergy to certain types of food. That's part of the reason grains is the first thing to drop for people with non-celiac IBD. The other reason is that it also causes disbyosis which exacerbates leaky gut.

When I tried to reintroduce wheat with one pita chip I got a terrible headache, I waited 3 days and tried again, same headache. I refrained 3 days tried again and got another headache. I've been wheat free for 5 years now and I have no more joint pains or headaches. My question for Dr. McDougall, would you say it's not wheat that caused my problems? I was confused as to whether you believe in wheat intolerance or not.

  • @annas.5894
    @annas.5894 5 років тому

    GMO foods have devastated the farmers in India and many other countries by not allowing the farmers to save seed from year to year. This forces them to purchase seeds from giant corporations like Monsanto as Monsanto owns the patents on the seeds. It also eliminates biodiversity. In India there are literally thousands of varieties of rice that farmers bred to withstand different environments but these are quickly being lost. Also many farmers are extremely poor and cannot afford to purchase seed each year. The Monsanto grain may not be well adapted to the particular environment and the crop is lost. There continues to be an epidemic of suicides among small farmers in India and elsewhere. It is a terrible situation and is growing worse. I for one don’t want to give the world’s food supply over to a few multinational corporations. Save seeds! It’s one of the most important things you can do. They are literally life.
    I still love Dr. McDougall, though. 🌿

  • @Mentat1231
    @Mentat1231 10 років тому

    Also, McDougall should be *applauded* for saying what he actually believes (and backing it up with scientific literature), rather than just sticking to what's popular. If the scientific research shows that GMO foods aren't the problem, so be it. McDougall risks unpopularity to say the truth, and that should always be commended.

    I’ve done keto for months and it never worked. I had stages where (despite eating normal calories) I would be starving like I was dying and eat 5,000 - 10,000. Although my skin was fabulous and I stopped bloating, Keto just never worked for my body. I think the key is being aware of where your food is coming from and avoiding processed foods and vegetable oils.
    I started paleo because I’m celiac and some grains can mimic gluten and still give celiacs reactions. I know people who have done Keto and thrived. I think it’s about finding what works for your body and avoiding the poisons in the supermarkets. I’m still trying to find what does. I only eat organic, especially with meat and eggs.
    I have insulin resistance so I really do NOT lose weight and I gain on high carb and my blood sugar gives me a lot of highs and lows. When I don’t have animal proteins long-term, I get constant headaches and have no energy (even when replacing with other healthy proteins). I started reducing carbs on paleo and began to feel like I couldn’t be satiated again (like I felt in keto). I feel like it’s a balance. And I feel that different bodies have different needs. I think the people who swear by specific diets (keto, paleo, starch) is because it’s worked wonders for them. I think we need to realize that different bodies respond differently. The only “one-size fits all” is that no one should be eating the standard toxic foods and chemicals and not overeating sugar. As far as keto, paleo, starch, etc. I think it depends on the person’s body.
    I also like how paleo cuts out inflammatory foods like legumes and dairy. I have SIBO (from years of untreated celiac) and an autoimmune disease. So paleo is very healing to me. But, people jumping in fads and eating tons of processed foods, undoes the purpose of these diets.

    After seeing this I went straight to the kitchen and tried to gave gluten one more chance I ate an "organic" whole wheat bread and after the 1st bite I was happy, but after 10 minutes I began to feel abdominal cramps and now I feel a lightheadedness. It is worse if it is whole wheat than when it's refined so I removed gluten from my diet because it gives me serious mood swings as depression or PMS.
    I think the sensibilities could be real as I am also lactose intolerant too and I get terrible stomach cramps and AWFUL farts after eating lactose ... so it's not my imagination. People should understand and accept once and for all that not all people are as equal and everyone has a different stomach ..
