Green Screen, also known as Chroma key, is a kind of special video effects often used in filmmaking. The idea is to create a pure green background which is then made transparent and replaced with different virtual backgrounds you want. This way you can superimpose anything or anyone onto virtual backgrounds so as to create some amazing visual effects.
    1. VSDC.
VSDC is a free professional video editing program, only available on windows for now. Here’s how to make green screen video with it.
First of all, create a new project, and import green screen clip and background video to the program. You can simply do that by dragging the files to the timeline.
Next, right click on the green screen footage. Find Video Effects, then Transparency, and select background remover. It pops up a dialogue asking if you want to apply chroma key on the entire clip or just part of the clip.
Alright, in the background remover settings panel beside the preview window, click the eyedrop icon and select the green color that needs to be removed. In one click, the green background is made transparent. You can upgrade to pro version to customize the intensity level and clear it up.
    2. iMovie.
If you use Mac computer, you can find iMovie right in your launch pad. iMovie is a well-known video editor, but as a matter of fact, you can also edit green screen video on iMovie.
First things first, open iMovie and import your green screen footage and background videos. Add your background clip to the timeline, and then green screen footage. Select the green screen footage, and click Video Overlay Settings above the preview window. In the drop down menu, choose Green/Blue Screen.
Voila, the green background is removed! Use the softness bar to optimize the result.
But note that if it’s too much, the object will look transparent. Another helpful tool is this clean-up, which can be used to erase any unwanted part of the footage. So that’s how to make green screen video on this Mac only tool, iMovie.
Now, I’m going to introduce another powerful green screen tool, available on both Windows and Mac.
