  • Follow up on the Far Side Collar Sleeve series. Last video we covered the Omoplata, this video we are going into the Triangle Set Up, kicking the opponents far leg out is really shocking and difficult to defend. Hope you guys like the video let me know your questions and comment.

    I really like the idea of that format you were discussing. It fits in with your concepts on how to get good at bjj. I'll definitely follow along. I know it's not a set position but a nice topic would be flowing between all the different guards until you find a sweep and where and when to throw in a lasso

    Been working your guard retention techniques. Gets me really nice looks.

    Great video as always -- extremely helpful. Would you use this guard on a kneeling opponent, and if so, how would you change the setup of the triangle from this guard? Kick the knee out the same way you would the leg?

    I found out about you via the series you did on Grapplers Guide which was excellent. Probably my favorite so far from expert series that are on there. I’m a mid level white belt, almost 6ft and only 150lbs. I’m only able to train 2Xs a week. I give up weight and strength most of the time I roll. However, when I do roll with guys close to my weight and experience I do quite well. When it is a guy that is the same skill or even a little less but I give up like 30+ lbs I really struggle. Is that normal? And what should I be working for my body type? Should I focus on defense since that is where I find myself most?
    I like your videos because you are not that big of a guy and super technical. I like how you ask your partners to really hold you tight in positions etc. I see a lot of videos where the guy is way bigger than the partner and the partner is barley using any force or strength. Let’s just say those videos don’t inspire confidence that those techniques are actually going to work against a resisting opponent; let alone one that is bigger stronger.
    Anyway, you are a gifted teacher. Keep it coming. Please give some suggestions for how to deal with much stronger and or bigger opponents on your upcoming passing videos. I obviously have a hard time with big guys tossing me around! Oss

      theticoboy Great question! So my advice is you should have two things you are working on, one offensive thing and then your defense recomposing at same time. If you only work defense you build the habit of always defending. It’s good to have a basic open guard game you develop while also at same time spend specific time developing your retention and pin escapes. As far as what game to play, light build I would suggest spider as a good open guard. Also make sure it have good details on the finish of your basic Omoplata and triangle choke because that it the most common move you will finish with from the position. I just started adding playlists on my channel so check some of them out will help organize the stuff better for you.

    It would be really good to see how you deal with the situation where he does manage to get the hand (on the sleeve you grab) to your knee to start stuffing your right leg. I can see how RDLR may be one way to go, but if he squats and sits back a little I think that may be hard to load him and get the sweep. What else can one do?

      SpatialK ok I will work some of that into the next video. Main thing would be to try to break the grip.

    What do you do if they grab your color in far side color sleeve so they make it hard to go for the triangle?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 років тому

      estan holoiga If they grab your collar with the arm you are controlling it shouldn’t make the triangle any harder because them holding your lapel means their arm is still extended. The more difficult situation is if they are really strong controlling the pants on your leg that is in their bicep.

    Are you kicking his knee in such a way that he feels hyperextending pressure?
    The most noobish part of my game is when I am playing guard and the top player quickly wraps up my foot and drops into a belly down ankle lock.. I find it very hard to avoid and harder to escape, I've tapped many times to it. I know that's a very specific topic and you're looking for kind of broader topics.. maybe it could fit into some kind of series dealing with footlock escapes / SLX passing. Loving the content Jon!

      @JonThomasBJJ  6 років тому

      diabolic42090 No you really shouldn’t be hyper extending his knee it’s more that you are pushing his leg open. Shouldn’t be the knee bending straight back if that makes sense.

      @JonThomasBJJ  6 років тому

      diabolic42090 for sure that would be a bit more of a grip fighting concept with the ankle lock defense. Unless it’s happening while in a particular guard specifically. For example if you are in double sleeve that should be hard to do for them, but in dlr it’s more possible he could try it. I can cover defending it though in near future

    i want to understand gripping game from standing, what should i be going for? I have no purpose i just randomly try to get grips. I would like some understanding of how the game tree works in standing position with the gi.. the best I could find is "how to grip like a world champion" judo DVD which is good but its only 30 minutes long so I still feel this "overview of grips" in the standing position is extremely overlooked in instructionals.
    I really like your overview of positions idea, people are often saying focus on a few moves which is good but then it takes forever to understand how everything goes together!

      farts on girls Great question I think I will discuss stand up and approaches to pulling guard or doing takedowns, but just giving guys a base understanding of what they should be thinking.
