  • In this episode of our “Next Chapter” series, Atria Well-Being Coach Billie Jean King sits down with Sarah, an Atria resident and lifelong artist.
Sarah grew up in Brooklyn during the depression, and she takes us on a journey back to her roots, sharing tales of her immigrant father's clothing factory. Realizing she had no photos of that time, Sarah set out to capture the essence of immigrant life, her family's struggles, and the spirit of "tenement comradery" among the women who worked in the factory.
Though her family didn’t have money for arts education when she was younger, Sarah eventually studied art at Pratt Institute and went on to earn her master’s in sculpture from Long Island University.
Sarah's passion for life and art remains undiminished. "I have to live my life as if I'm going to live forever,” she tells Billie Jean. “Otherwise, I'll stop doing things and think, ‘You're too old, you can't do this,’" she says with a laugh. Today she focuses her passion on her grandchildren and continuing to make work.
“I always have some peace when I’m working,” Sarah says. “My best friend is my art.”
