    No nut pesto is good, I suppose. If you can't find pine nuts and you still want to make the recipe, make w/o the nuts like Mardell, but you can also use sunflower seeds instead of pine nuts which when I last checked was $17.99 per pound. Sunflower seeds is $7.99 a pound and more economical.

    • @MardellHill
      @MardellHill  6 років тому

      Thank you for trying this recipe. Great idea about sunflower seeds as a substitute for pine nuts. As mentioned, for people with nut allergies this recipe helps them enjoy pesto. This is such a brilliant recipe. I've been looking for a pesto recipe which doesn't contain nuts as I am allergic to nuts. I wanted to ask do we have to put cheese in the pesto or can it be optional and if we do need to put cheese can we use cheddar cheese instead or parmesan cheese.

    • @MardellHill
      @MardellHill  6 років тому +1

      Mg Goh, I am so pleased you like this recipe. It took a while to perfect it, so, I’m not sure about exchanging the cheese. Honestly, I think cheddar cheese will not work, cheddar works best in a cream sauce.
      Also, the Parmesan (hard) cheese, hold the basil & garlic mixture together. Therefore, omitting it altogether will not make a pesto, just an olive oil, basil & garlic pasta toss.
      Feel free to experiment and let me know how it goes 👌

    Does it matter how thinly grated the parmesan is? My roommate and I purchased a 24 oz bottle of kraft grated parmesan at the store about a week ago and haven't opened it yet. The parmesan in the bottle is almost powder like, so I was wondering if it would still work.

    • @MardellHill
      @MardellHill  5 років тому

      Hi Anya, A fine powder of cheese will make the pesto more dense. The quality of the cheese will also enhance or deduct from the pesto flavor. Try making it with the ingredients you have on hand this time. Then, next time try it with a hand grated block of Parmesan and decide what’s best for you 😋 Be sure to subscribe 💃 and thanks for watching my video!

    do seeds count as nuts?? could you substitute sunflower seeds/pumpkin seeds/etc??

    • @MardellHill
      @MardellHill  7 років тому +1

      Yes, you can substitute seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin (papitas) instead of nuts. However, seeds & nuts are in the same family &, while a person may be sensitive to one, another may work find for them. Also, seeds & nuts may become rancid, causing digestive issues... Freezing or toasting reduces the possibility of bad bacteria or mold. Enjoy!

      Brian Smith, great question! Pine nuts are absolutely wonderful for those that either like the taste or can tolerate them. Unfortunately, some people have sensitivity to some or all nuts. This pesto is a delicious nut free alternative. However, if you prefer nuts, of any kind, in your pesto, please feel free to add those to this recipe 😊 Enjoy!

    himalayan sea salt? which sea is in the himalayas??

    • @MardellHill
      @MardellHill  7 років тому +4

      Himalayan salt is rock salt or halite from the Punjab region of Pakistan. It is mined at the Khewra Salt Mine in Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab, which is situated in the foothills of the Salt Range hill system in the Punjab province of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is located approximately 310 kilometres (190 mi) from the Himalayas.

    Mardell...let me guess...you're not Italian...That grated parmesean cheese was store bought already grated? Don't use that. There's a chemical they add so the cheese doesn't clump. Buy a wedge and grate it yourself. Add more oil on top of the basil leaves so your machine has enough lubrication to do its work from the beginning.
