Back in '78 when I went through BCT you DID NOT address the Drill Sergeant as "Drill Sergeant", you addressed them by their actual rank (Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, etc.). They would remind you that Drill Sergeant was their job, not their title... usually by allowing you to do push-ups until they got tired.

We had a very small in stature drill sergeant in A.I.T. He also had a very big chip on his shoulder and a serious case of small guy syndrome. He was not very liked by the soldiers because he would smoke you for anything. Sleeves were rolled a half an inch to long/short 2 hour grass drill. Sneeze or cough while he was talking, you’d get smoked for half an hour. My AIT was 32 weeks long and I was the platoon guide for 31 of those 32 weeks. I didn’t care to much for the position to much but one of the few perks it offered was I got to have my own room in the drill sgts office. Now before I go on my class was the last class this drill sgt was going to have as he had gotten 2 dwis and was not going to able to re-enlist for 3 years. So myself and him got to be fairly good friends. At least as friends as a drill Sgt could be with a trainee. He relayed to me in no certain circumstances that this small drill sgt was not liked at all by any of the drill sgts. Around week 10 or 11 one of my class mates slipped on some ice during morning pt. This drill sgt smoked him. The soldier then reported to me after pt that he thought that he had hurt his ankle during his fall. I reported to my drill sgt what had happened. My drill sgt sent the young soldier to the tmc to get his ankle checked out. Turned out that he had actually broken 2 minor bones in his ankle. He was taken out of class for 3 days and was bed ridden for like 7 days. Little man drill sgt found out about this and was calling the guy weak and a tag baby and a wimp. One of the guys in my platoon took issue with this and him and the D.I. Got into a very heated argument. The d.i. Told him to meet him in the 4 th floor shower at 10 pm. Normally if a D.I. Does this and your stupid enough to show up your going to get smoked by about 6 drill sgts. In this case though none of the little guys friends showed up. Needless to say he got his ass handed to him. The private that was fighting him must have had a background in boxing or some sort of martial arts. He did not leave a single mark on the D.I.s face. At the next morning pt you could tell he was hurt pretty bad though. In fact he could almost not walk. Soon after that he was transferred out of our unit. Nothing was ever said again about the incident. To this day I still don’t know how there was not any sort of investigation or charges brought forward on either the D.I. Or the private who was involved in the fight. I guess the whole thing was just ignored because no one liked the little D.I.
Don't address with sir or ma'am. Don't apologize. Don't lie. Don't watch others get smoked. Don't ask for instructions a second time. Don't address with first or surname. To add... Don't laugh!
I don't think it was about not apologizing. We just had to say, "I'M sorry, Drill Sgt." But I learned it was far better to say, "No excuses, Drill Sgt."

James Brady I was the quiet one in the back of formation. Personally thought BCT was fun. It's not the same as when you went through, our DS's made it a point to remind us of that fact on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong I love the Army but I don't think I'll be in long enough to make it past specialist. "Silence is compliance" is something my Drill used to say a lot. Thank you for your service.
Perhaps I was an exception to the rule, but by the time I finished my BT I was on a first name basis with most of the cadre in my unit. We would often talk about stuff in general. I found out where some good bass fishing spots were from several of the sergeants. My 1st Sergeant was an amateur (ham) radio operator, and I had a background in communications, so we would often talk about radio technology and MARS (Military Affiliate Radio Service). Even my company commander and training officer were known to shoot the bull with me on occasion. However, this was never in the presence of other trainees. I respected the men/women and their ranks and treated them accordingly in the 'public' eye.

I was one of those guys who used my drill sergeants name, and one of the other drill sergeants heard me. it was one of the worst mistakes I've ever made. I became good friends with the ground that day.
My son referred to his DS by his last name, forgetting to add Drill Sergeant first. Needless to say, after being ear fucked by three DS's at the same time, he also became very good friends with the ground; even being left alone in a field to continue his push-ups until another DS came back to get him. Lesson learned. 😉
That'll get you FUCKED UP! I remember we were cleaning our weapons after a day at the range and I was cleaning the rust off my selector switch so my weapon was on semi, even though the lower receiver was separated from the upper receiver. Didn't matter. My Drill Sergeant wasn't having ANY of that. My ass was squatting for 20+ minutes straight holding my rifle out in front of me with my charging handle pulled to the rear with only my index finger and thumb. But guess what I never did again?

I disagree, if I'm ever given an order that I don't completely understand I'm going to say I don't understand would you repeat that sir? I might get my butt chewed out but so what. better to do that than mess up and get someone hurt. Vietnam vet
People might think that this is all common sense stuff that you would do anyway. But when you have a drill instructor screaming in your face you would be amazed at how quick common sense flies out the window! I actually had the nerve to say "What?" when I didn't hear an order and I got reamed for about fifteen minutes! Lol. Best thing to do in basic is just roll with it. Put yourself in the drill instructors hands because that's exactly where he wants you to be. You belong to him or her until you graduate basic. Don't think, just do. And don't take anything personally. If you do then you are going to be miserable.
I took it personal with two of them, and made sure they remembered in an email I sent them almost a year after I graduated. I ended up getting slapped on the wrist for misusing government email, mainly because that was the only rule I broke. Long story short, I took swipes at how they failed and how I succeeded in spite of them. Just those two; the other ones either did their jobs properly or didn't do their jobs improperly with malice. I was good at rolling with what I could and taking my lumps with grace, but it got to a point where that wasn't enough.
A few more things you may not want to ask your Drill Sgt. 1. Is this your first day on the job? 2. Did you get this job as punishment? 3. How many times have you been article 15'd? 4. Are you a high school graduate?
Ironically, I knew plenty of them who were MP's. Military police, for all intents and purposes, is a dead end career. If you get tired of being constantly on deployment rotation doing the same boring stuff, why not go back to the training environment and lord it over recruits any way you practically please? Of course this information was earned by getting through at least one term of military service, but I'd tell anyone that it's implied that becoming a drill sergeant is more of an expedience to get an NCO out of something but stay in uniform. And that can be a hard call since being a drill sergeant is hardly a rosy experience anyway. Not a few drill sergeants actually hate being drill sergeants, but it beats certain alternatives that have ushered them to it. Very few ones I know, if any, had come from the Guccier MOS's that had more to offer for careerists. It would be hard at best to find drill sergeants who are naturally gifted and talented teachers/coaches/disciplinarians. More than less of them, chances are, couldn't hack it in their first or second MOS.
For those who do not know what "getting smoked" means, he is referring to a lengthy session of intense physical exercise. There are a number of reasons why a person, team, squad, platoon might get smoked. Usually a smoke session is used as a disciplinary measure, but sometimes they will smoke you to test how well you can think under duress. Drill Sergeants are masters of mental gymnastics and will yell at you and ask questions trying to get you to slip up so they can smoke you harder. This is not because they hate you, but to condition your mind, as well as your body, for combat. Of course there are the days where the Drill Sergeant is in a bad mood and wants to watch the world burn. On those days, well, it sucks to be you, but on the bright side, the harder he works you the quicker he will get it out of his system and leave you alone. In the late phases of Basic Training the "typical" smoke session is treated more like a game than a punishment and can actually be a lot of fun. That being said, since it is the later phases, you'll be expected not to do dumb shit so if you're nearing graduation and you pull a Red Phase stunt, expect all hell to break loose. Pro Tip: Smoking is going to happen and it's going to happen a lot in Basic. You're not going to hurt yourself, you're not going to die and you sure as hell are not going to get out of getting smoked. The Drill Sergeants are professionals and know how hard to push a soldier. All you have to do is obey them and give 100%. Smoke sessions last a lot longer when you half-ass them. Also, you'll find out how bad smokings can really be once you get to your permanent duty station and your team or squad leader has a go at you, so enjoy the smokings in basic while you can.
Yeah but there is a difference between taking an excuse to get angry so they can smoke you or make you do whatever it was they always intended to make you do, and actually ticking off the sergeant. Its like the difference between your locker actually being dirty and the ever infamous invisible dust. One is going to actually make them angry, the other is them pushing you to try harder or whatever.
Fortunately, in Basic, I knew to keep my mouth shut except when being addressed by a Drill Sergeant, or anyone in the cadre, or any superior NCO or officer....period. :) Basic Training is NOT the place you want to try and think you're going to impress the Drill Sergeants. One fellow recruit had said something in Russian to a Drill Sergeant (and this was at the latter part of the Cold War). The Drill Sergeant smoked him but good....and was of course, dressing the poor schmoe down as he was in the "front leaning rest" and knockin' out push ups. "Come on, now...I can't hear you! One-ski, two-ski, three-ski....Let's go! Gimme them Russian numbers!"

DS are there to teach you. They're there to correct you. If you apologize when corrected, it says you're ashamed of doing something wrong. Why? Did you know it was wrong? So why do it? Are you TRYING to piss him off? Don't be ashamed of messing up. You're in BCT. You're SUPPOSED to mess up. Just don't ever make the same mistake twice.
My Drill Sargent took me aside and told me that the Enemy will not appauligise for killing me so Stop saying you are sorry. Your videos on the culture within Army Basic Training are very informative. I was an enlisted Marine during the Desert Shield/Storm era, and there are a fair share of similarities and differences in what is expected and transpires between the two branches when it specifically comes to training. Thank you for that.
Also, never, EVER ask personal questions. The smartest thing anyone can do in Basic is keep his mouth shut and not draw attention to himself. Just go into Basic with the mentality that you're going to do what you're told. It really is that simple; they will tell you what to say and do, and how to say and do it.
I remeber during my basic training one private thought he was smart by saying "my apologies, drill sergeant." And let's just say he didn't make it through basic
What ARE you supposed to say in such a situation? "I have no excuse, Drill Sergeant."? "I'm a worthless maggot, Drill Sergeant"? "How many pushups should I do, Drill Sergeant"?
One time I just said "I wasn't thinking and fucked up hard DS" in a situation that could have fucked my whole day up. He just told me to fix it and get out of his face.
Be careful about taking initiative in basic. The Drills always want you to do what they tell you and only when they tell you. That includes the platoon getting up earlier to be ready for PT when they enter the barracks for wake up. We did that once and got smoked for it. Although we could tell the Drills were impressed that we took the initiative as a platoon, they hadn´t told us to get up so they smoked us. We never did that again.
I've never been in the military but I had a friend who had trained Canadian soldiers. He told me a story once about recruits who had cleaned their racks and made everything perfect and slept on the floor (or didn't sleep). He and the other Sergeants knew exactly what had happened, and they chewed them out and told them everything was terrible, not because initiative was bad but because they actually wanted them to get the hours of sleep allotted to them. That may have been what happened in your case. They know they are making you wickedly tired, but there's a fine line and they do want you to get the sleep they've told you to get.
The reason why a Drill Sergeant doesn't like being call Sir or Ma'am, is because it's not there rank. Sir/ma'am, are on the officer side. Just pretty much getting them used to rank, especially those that don't understand. It's not about offended, there's reasons on why Drills tell trainees to do certain things. Just sticking to the standard! Good video bud!

"Sir/Ma'am" is reserved for Officers. Enlisted take offense to it because usually lower Officers aren't very educated or at least they are book smart but lack common sense.
Stood in the rain at the Holder Complex at Ft. Knox 10 feet from cover. I suggested, "Drill, why don't we move these tank tools under the cover and continue class?" "Son, you need to learn right now, it doesn't rain in the Army, it rains on the Army!" ...and I did push-ups for asking.

That is so true. I did my basic at Ft. Ord, CA. ('72/'73). Beautiful weekends, come Monday morning it would be 🌧. When we trained it rained. Even on the rifle range, remember blowing the water out of the sight. Do it over again, HELL YES!

I don’t know where the pic came from on your cover of the video but the DS in your picture was my DS at Ft. Jackson over a decade ago. He would point at us like that and call it the “creed hand”. If he pointed at you, you had to start reciting the soldiers creed. I will never forget that guy. Small world.
Brecconable The Army and Marines do their Basic Trainings differently. In Marines Basic Training, DIs will demand that you call them Sir or Ma'am, and that goes for nearly every personel higher in rank than you. They have earned that level of respect by earning the title of Marines and earning the title of Drill Instructor. You WILL call them Sir/Ma'am, IF you are in Marines Basic Training, to my knowledge Army Soldiers only call them by their proper rank, as Sir isnt in their vocabulary. In the Army, you call your Drill Sergeant, Drill Sergeant. Do NOT call them Sir, they will chew your ass off if you call them Sir. They have earned the title of Drill Sergeant and thats what you will call them
I found this video to be very informative and very funny. My Dad was US ARMY for a little of 22 years. He was in Cav in the 70s. Then went to jump school and got his wings.... Idk if he became terrified of flying before he started this school or if it was a byproduct he got AFTER that training... He then was given the opportunity to become a Drill Seargent. He did that for 4 years, became Senior Drill Seargent multiple times and at the time you could only be at that MOS for 4 years, that was in the early 80s. He then went I to recruiting til he retired in 98. He still had every bit of that Drill Seargent in him til he died. When you say you got "smoked", my Dad's era had a different name for it, lol, you get to LEAVE basic training after a certain amount of time, trying being the daughter of a Drill Seargent. When I was 6, I hit my brother and was given a bucket of soapy water and toothbrush and told to clean. After he saw that, I thought it was FUN and was enjoying using a toothbrush to clean the floor, I was called back and was taught how to throw a proper punch. When he retired I was 10, he was having trouble with civilian life, I made the mistake of telling him that we, his kids, weren't his soldiers, we were his CHILDREN, STOP ording us around. OMG BIG MISTAKE... He was livid, the eyes were popping out of his head, you could see every vein in his neck, he was millimeters away from my face, pointing at me, his spit flying all over me, yelling. Being the stubborn child, a basic copy of himself, I didn't show any emotion, I didn't bend, flinch... Well, until he left the house and then started to hyperventilate. Lol. When I started high school, I wanted to join the military, I was way too young but wanted a head start. The Army recruiters were NEVER at least our school, but the Navy/Marine Corp recruiters were. I foolishly gave the Navy recruiter my contact information, I explained I was too young to sign on but you love to have the opportunity to do any training to help me become a better and stronger individual. That I had NOT decided on which branch to join. I got home and Navy called and left a message on our answering machine about how excited he was to help me and could we schedule a time to meet with him. My Dad was beyond livid. Imagine your Drill Seargent wanting to whatever he is allowed to do, short of killing you. It was a repeat of the episode when I was 10. He told me if I wanted to join the military, he'd give me a good taste of it. He didn't want me to join the military at the time, so he was mad I went behind his back and seemed even more upset that I talked to NAVY FIRST!!!!??? Every branch thinks they are better than the next. Turns out a month after all that happened I found out I had a tumor in my brain and had to have brain surgery. It crushed every dream I ever had. 9/11 happened after that and that made have a lot of guilt. My friends, joined up, shipped out, many killed. I was an Army brat, my Dad knew how to train soldiers, none of my friends would interact with my Dad because he scared the crap out of all of them, if they couldn't deal with a guy like him in a civilian setting, I can only imagine the horror they encountered at reception and during Basic. I felt I could handle whatever the Drill Seargent dished out, I lived with one for my entire life, I knew the mental games and other crap they could dish out! One of my favorite memories is when a cocky 16 year old classmate, a male, FRIEND, came over and my Dad wasn't fond of his attitude. He went, got his weapon (unloaded), decided it was the ideal time to be cleaned and preceeded to field shrip it as fast as he could, all the while staring him down. This boy NEVER talked to me or came over again. In fact no boy every came over after said event. The football players were afraid to make eye contact with him after that, he helped coaching our high school football team, which I thought was funny, these over 6 foot kids who were taller than my Dad, bigger than him. When he talked they ALL listened, when he told them to go do something, they did it without making a fuss, other coaches couldn't get the team to shut up and stop whining. He was the first coach who could do all the training WITH the team AND do it better. If he asked for 40 push ups, 30 jumping jacks, running, he'd do MORE than that amount. He said he would NEVER ask someone to do something he could not do himself. I think that's why, until his heart attack and death, he was still in contact with over 3 dozen men and women he trained or commanded while he was a Drill Seargent and Recruiter. The memories this video brought back. Thank you!

That super sucks about the brain tumor. I was set on an army linguistics career, did really well on all the tests. I had a full army rotc scholarship but decided I wanted to go enlisted route instead. I was impatient and wanted to get on things lol. Then one day I collapsed at 19 years old and we found out I have a congenital heart problem that doesn't manifest until late teens /early 20's. RIP my dreams. I've adapted and had and have new dreams now, but I'm still a bit wistful about my first dream of being a soldier. Your dad sounds like he was a double handful and awesome at the same time ^^
One of my friends at Basic got smoked and he got fired from PL because he formed up the platoon and when Drill Sergeant came up and asked him if the men were formed, he answered "YUP!"... He attracted every DS in the area as if he had 5 stars on GTA.

30+ years ago when i was a new soldier getting off the cattle car at basic training, there was that first smoking they give you call "shock treatment" some idiot asked a DS to help him with his bag...................... even as an old retired man i remember the ass wopping that came after that. i laugh now at the memory of the pain, but i cried then!
Just don't say anything at all. Don't even breathe. They get so set off if you breathe. Hell, don't even move, just play dead. My advice :) Also, if I went into the military, I'd be more scared of not hearing what they're saying more then the DI themselves XD

Ignore the yelling focus on the words. Do everything with speed, the last one to finish something always is a target by the drill Sargent. Drill Sargents are trying to train you to make quick rational correct decisions under a extremely stressful environment. Control of judgement under stress.
Ft. Jackson's BCT mantra was "Always forward". By the end of the cycle, you can put whatever tone on "Always Forward, Drill Sergeant" to make it sound any way you want. lol. I laughed at those who said "Thank you, D.S." which was always followed up with a DS yelling "Don't thank me! Thank your recruiter!" I was 27 when I enlisted and turned 28 in BCT. On the first day in the bay, the bay DS, a skinny little black guy who was funny as Hell, came out to us lined up around the killzone. I was towards the front. There were 64 of us females. He asks, "Who has ever been arrested for assault?" Being an honest person, I raised my hand (no worries, it was verbal, not physical and it was to the 17 year old who was sleeping with my husband when I had 3 young children) anyways.....I look around without moving my head and see I'm the only one with my hand raised. He grins, points at me, and says, "Great! You're bay boss!" Bay Boss is a complete nightmare. Responsible for all the females, responsible for the bay, no personal time. Towards the end of the cycle, that DS was sitting in his office. I knocked, he told me to enter, asked me what I wanted. I said, "Can I not be Bay Boss anymore, DS?" With a huge grin, he set his pen down and leaned back in his seat. He asked, "What's the matter, PFC? You wanna QUIT?!" I'm a redhead, not a blonde and there was no way he was going to hear the word "quit" from my mouth. I held my head up high while standing at Parade Rest, looked him in the eyes, and said, "No, Drill Sergeant! I would just like to afford the opportunity to someone else!" Now I was grinning. He was trying not to laugh and told me "Negative." I left with a "Always Forward, Drill Sergeant." with a tone of defeat. Later that night, he came out of his office, pointed at me, told me I stole a roll of toilet paper and was now fired as Bay Boss. There were only 2 weeks left. I was confused at first as I didn't steal anything and there was no reason to steal t.p. as it was always stocked, but then I put it together that he did that for me. DS Wynn was freaking AWESOME!!!!!!!

We had a very small in stature drill sergeant in A.I.T. He also had a very big chip on his shoulder and a serious case of small guy syndrome. He was not very liked by the soldiers because he would smoke you for anything. Sleeves were rolled a half an inch to long/short 2 hour grass drill. Sneeze or cough while he was talking, you’d get smoked for half an hour. My AIT was 32 weeks long and I was the platoon guide for 31 of those 32 weeks. I didn’t care to much for the position to much but one of the few perks it offered was I got to have my own room in the drill sgts office. Now before I go on my class was the last class this drill sgt was going to have as he had gotten 2 dwis and was not going to able to re-enlist for 3 years. So myself and him got to be fairly good friends. At least as friends as a drill Sgt could be with a trainee. He relayed to me in no certain circumstances that this small drill sgt was not liked at all by any of the drill sgts. Around week 10 or 11 one of my class mates slipped on some ice during morning pt. This drill sgt smoked him. The soldier then reported to me after pt that he thought that he had hurt his ankle during his fall. I reported to my drill sgt what had happened. My drill sgt sent the young soldier to the tmc to get his ankle checked out. Turned out that he had actually broken 2 minor bones in his ankle. He was taken out of class for 3 days and was bed ridden for like 7 days. Little man drill sgt found out about this and was calling the guy weak and a tag baby and a wimp. One of the guys in my platoon took issue with this and him and the D.I. Got into a very heated argument. The d.i. Told him to meet him in the 4 th floor shower at 10 pm. Normally if a D.I. Does this and your stupid enough to show up your going to get smoked by about 6 drill sgts. In this case though none of the little guys friends showed up. Needless to say he got his ass handed to him. The private that was fighting him must have had a background in boxing or some sort of martial arts. He did not leave a single mark on the D.I.s face. At the next morning pt you could tell he was hurt pretty bad though. In fact he could almost not walk. Soon after that he was transferred out of our unit. Nothing was ever said again about the incident. To this day I still don’t know how there was not any sort of investigation or charges brought forward on either the D.I. Or the private who was involved in the fight. I guess the whole thing was just ignored because no one liked the little D.I.

It's not the same as when you went through, our DS's made it a point to remind us of that fact on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong I love the Army but I don't think I'll be in long enough to make it past specialist. "Silence is compliance" is something my Drill used to say a lot. Thank you for your service.
Perhaps I was an exception to the rule, but by the time I finished my BT I was on a first name basis with most of the cadre in my unit. We would often talk about stuff in general. I found out where some good bass fishing spots were from several of the sergeants. My 1st Sergeant was an amateur (ham) radio operator, and I had a background in communications, so we would often talk about radio technology and MARS (Military Affiliate Radio Service). Even my company commander and training officer were known to shoot the bull with me on occasion. However, this was never in the presence of other trainees. I respected the men/women and their ranks and treated them accordingly in the 'public' eye.

People might think that this is all common sense stuff that you would do anyway. But when you have a drill instructor screaming in your face you would be amazed at how quick common sense flies out the window! I actually had the nerve to say "What?" when I didn't hear an order and I got reamed for about fifteen minutes! Lol. Best thing to do in basic is just roll with it. Put yourself in the drill instructors hands because that's exactly where he wants you to be. You belong to him or her until you graduate basic. Don't think, just do. And don't take anything personally. If you do then you are going to be miserable.

I took it personal with two of them, and made sure they remembered in an email I sent them almost a year after I graduated. I ended up getting slapped on the wrist for misusing government email, mainly because that was the only rule I broke. Long story short, I took swipes at how they failed and how I succeeded in spite of them. Just those two; the other ones either did their jobs properly or didn't do their jobs improperly with malice.
I was good at rolling with what I could and taking my lumps with grace, but it got to a point where that wasn't enough.

Ironically, I knew plenty of them who were MP's. Military police, for all intents and purposes, is a dead end career. If you get tired of being constantly on deployment rotation doing the same boring stuff, why not go back to the training environment and lord it over recruits any way you practically please?
Of course this information was earned by getting through at least one term of military service, but I'd tell anyone that it's implied that becoming a drill sergeant is more of an expedience to get an NCO out of something but stay in uniform. And that can be a hard call since being a drill sergeant is hardly a rosy experience anyway. Not a few drill sergeants actually hate being drill sergeants, but it beats certain alternatives that have ushered them to it.
Very few ones I know, if any, had come from the Guccier MOS's that had more to offer for careerists. It would be hard at best to find drill sergeants who are naturally gifted and talented teachers/coaches/disciplinarians. More than less of them, chances are, couldn't hack it in their first or second MOS.
For those who do not know what "getting smoked" means, he is referring to a lengthy session of intense physical exercise. There are a number of reasons why a person, team, squad, platoon might get smoked. Usually a smoke session is used as a disciplinary measure, but sometimes they will smoke you to test how well you can think under duress. Drill Sergeants are masters of mental gymnastics and will yell at you and ask questions trying to get you to slip up so they can smoke you harder. This is not because they hate you, but to condition your mind, as well as your body, for combat. Of course there are the days where the Drill Sergeant is in a bad mood and wants to watch the world burn. On those days, well, it sucks to be you, but on the bright side, the harder he works you the quicker he will get it out of his system and leave you alone.
In the late phases of Basic Training the "typical" smoke session is treated more like a game than a punishment and can actually be a lot of fun. That being said, since it is the later phases, you'll be expected not to do dumb shit so if you're nearing graduation and you pull a Red Phase stunt, expect all hell to break loose.
Pro Tip: Smoking is going to happen and it's going to happen a lot in Basic. You're not going to hurt yourself, you're not going to die and you sure as hell are not going to get out of getting smoked. The Drill Sergeants are professionals and know how hard to push a soldier. All you have to do is obey them and give 100%. Smoke sessions last a lot longer when you half-ass them. Also, you'll find out how bad smokings can really be once you get to your permanent duty station and your team or squad leader has a go at you, so enjoy the smokings in basic while you can.

Basic Training is NOT the place you want to try and think you're going to impress the Drill Sergeants. One fellow recruit had said something in Russian to a Drill Sergeant (and this was at the latter part of the Cold War). The Drill Sergeant smoked him but good....and was of course, dressing the poor schmoe down as he was in the "front leaning rest" and knockin' out push ups. "Come on, now...I can't hear you! One-ski, two-ski, three-ski....Let's go! Gimme them Russian numbers!"

Your videos on the culture within Army Basic Training are very informative. I was an enlisted Marine during the Desert Shield/Storm era, and there are a fair share of similarities and differences in what is expected and transpires between the two branches when it specifically comes to training. Thank you for that.
Also, never, EVER ask personal questions. The smartest thing anyone can do in Basic is keep his mouth shut and not draw attention to himself. Just go into Basic with the mentality that you're going to do what you're told. It really is that simple; they will tell you what to say and do, and how to say and do it.
I remeber during my basic training one private thought he was smart by saying "my apologies, drill sergeant." And let's just say he didn't make it through basic

Be careful about taking initiative in basic. The Drills always want you to do what they tell you and only when they tell you. That includes the platoon getting up earlier to be ready for PT when they enter the barracks for wake up. We did that once and got smoked for it. Although we could tell the Drills were impressed that we took the initiative as a platoon, they hadn´t told us to get up so they smoked us. We never did that again.
I've never been in the military but I had a friend who had trained Canadian soldiers. He told me a story once about recruits who had cleaned their racks and made everything perfect and slept on the floor (or didn't sleep). He and the other Sergeants knew exactly what had happened, and they chewed them out and told them everything was terrible, not because initiative was bad but because they actually wanted them to get the hours of sleep allotted to them. That may have been what happened in your case. They know they are making you wickedly tired, but there's a fine line and they do want you to get the sleep they've told you to get.
"Sir" is reserved for officers, not noncoms. One of my DS's told me, "Don't you 'Sir' me! I work for a living!"

In the Navy, I heard that in the fleet much more than in boot camp.
The reason why a Drill Sergeant doesn't like being call Sir or Ma'am, is because it's not there rank. Sir/ma'am, are on the officer side. Just pretty much getting them used to rank, especially those that don't understand. It's not about offended, there's reasons on why Drills tell trainees to do certain things. Just sticking to the standard! Good video bud!

"Sir/Ma'am" is reserved for Officers. Enlisted take offense to it because usually lower Officers aren't very educated or at least they are book smart but lack common sense.
Also it's not Triggered. It's called becoming a solider/Airman/Sailor/Guard/Marine. It's not a fragile ideal.
Stood in the rain at the Holder Complex at Ft. Knox 10 feet from cover. I suggested, "Drill, why don't we move these tank tools under the cover and continue class?" "Son, you need to learn right now, it doesn't rain in the Army, it rains on the Army!" ...and I did push-ups for asking.
Holder complex, I was a tanker, and remember holder well, it also rained on us everytime we marched over there, the sun knew we were going so it left...
That is so true. I did my basic at Ft. Ord, CA. ('72/'73). Beautiful weekends, come Monday morning it would be 🌧. When we trained it rained. Even on the rifle range, remember blowing the water out of the sight. Do it over again, HELL YES!

I don’t know where the pic came from on your cover of the video but the DS in your picture was my DS at Ft. Jackson over a decade ago. He would point at us like that and call it the “creed hand”. If he pointed at you, you had to start reciting the soldiers creed. I will never forget that guy. Small world.

Brecconable The Army and Marines do their Basic Trainings differently. In Marines Basic Training, DIs will demand that you call them Sir or Ma'am, and that goes for nearly every personel higher in rank than you. They have earned that level of respect by earning the title of Marines and earning the title of Drill Instructor. You WILL call them Sir/Ma'am, IF you are in Marines Basic Training, to my knowledge Army Soldiers only call them by their proper rank, as Sir isnt in their vocabulary.
In the Army, you call your Drill Sergeant, Drill Sergeant. Do NOT call them Sir, they will chew your ass off if you call them Sir. They have earned the title of Drill Sergeant and thats what you will call them

I found this video to be very informative and very funny. My Dad was US ARMY for a little of 22 years. He was in Cav in the 70s. Then went to jump school and got his wings.... Idk if he became terrified of flying before he started this school or if it was a byproduct he got AFTER that training... He then was given the opportunity to become a Drill Seargent. He did that for 4 years, became Senior Drill Seargent multiple times and at the time you could only be at that MOS for 4 years, that was in the early 80s.
He then went I to recruiting til he retired in 98. He still had every bit of that Drill Seargent in him til he died. When you say you got "smoked", my Dad's era had a different name for it, lol, you get to LEAVE basic training after a certain amount of time, trying being the daughter of a Drill Seargent. When I was 6, I hit my brother and was given a bucket of soapy water and toothbrush and told to clean. After he saw that, I thought it was FUN and was enjoying using a toothbrush to clean the floor, I was called back and was taught how to throw a proper punch.
When he retired I was 10, he was having trouble with civilian life, I made the mistake of telling him that we, his kids, weren't his soldiers, we were his CHILDREN, STOP ording us around. OMG BIG MISTAKE... He was livid, the eyes were popping out of his head, you could see every vein in his neck, he was millimeters away from my face, pointing at me, his spit flying all over me, yelling. Being the stubborn child, a basic copy of himself, I didn't show any emotion, I didn't bend, flinch... Well, until he left the house and then started to hyperventilate. Lol.
When I started high school, I wanted to join the military, I was way too young but wanted a head start. The Army recruiters were NEVER at least our school, but the Navy/Marine Corp recruiters were. I foolishly gave the Navy recruiter my contact information, I explained I was too young to sign on but you love to have the opportunity to do any training to help me become a better and stronger individual. That I had NOT decided on which branch to join. I got home and Navy called and left a message on our answering machine about how excited he was to help me and could we schedule a time to meet with him. My Dad was beyond livid. Imagine your Drill Seargent wanting to whatever he is allowed to do, short of killing you. It was a repeat of the episode when I was 10. He told me if I wanted to join the military, he'd give me a good taste of it. He didn't want me to join the military at the time, so he was mad I went behind his back and seemed even more upset that I talked to NAVY FIRST!!!!??? Every branch thinks they are better than the next. Turns out a month after all that happened I found out I had a tumor in my brain and had to have brain surgery. It crushed every dream I ever had. 9/11 happened after that and that made have a lot of guilt. My friends, joined up, shipped out, many killed. I was an Army brat, my Dad knew how to train soldiers, none of my friends would interact with my Dad because he scared the crap out of all of them, if they couldn't deal with a guy like him in a civilian setting, I can only imagine the horror they encountered at reception and during Basic. I felt I could handle whatever the Drill Seargent dished out, I lived with one for my entire life, I knew the mental games and other crap they could dish out!
One of my favorite memories is when a cocky 16 year old classmate, a male, FRIEND, came over and my Dad wasn't fond of his attitude. He went, got his weapon (unloaded), decided it was the ideal time to be cleaned and preceeded to field shrip it as fast as he could, all the while staring him down. This boy NEVER talked to me or came over again. In fact no boy every came over after said event. The football players were afraid to make eye contact with him after that, he helped coaching our high school football team, which I thought was funny, these over 6 foot kids who were taller than my Dad, bigger than him. When he talked they ALL listened, when he told them to go do something, they did it without making a fuss, other coaches couldn't get the team to shut up and stop whining. He was the first coach who could do all the training WITH the team AND do it better. If he asked for 40 push ups, 30 jumping jacks, running, he'd do MORE than that amount. He said he would NEVER ask someone to do something he could not do himself. I think that's why, until his heart attack and death, he was still in contact with over 3 dozen men and women he trained or commanded while he was a Drill Seargent and Recruiter.

That super sucks about the brain tumor. I was set on an army linguistics career, did really well on all the tests. I had a full army rotc scholarship but decided I wanted to go enlisted route instead. I was impatient and wanted to get on things lol. Then one day I collapsed at 19 years old and we found out I have a congenital heart problem that doesn't manifest until late teens /early 20's. RIP my dreams. I've adapted and had and have new dreams now, but I'm still a bit wistful about my first dream of being a soldier. Your dad sounds like he was a double handful and awesome at the same time ^^

30+ years ago when i was a new soldier getting off the cattle car at basic training, there was that first smoking they give you call "shock treatment" some idiot asked a DS to help him with his bag...................... even as an old retired man i remember the ass wopping that came after that. i laugh now at the memory of the pain, but i cried then!
Just don't say anything at all. Don't even breathe. They get so set off if you breathe. Hell, don't even move, just play dead. My advice :)

Ignore the yelling focus on the words. Do everything with speed, the last one to finish something always is a target by the drill Sargent. Drill Sargents are trying to train you to make quick rational correct decisions under a extremely stressful environment. Control of judgement under stress.

Ft. Jackson's BCT mantra was "Always forward". By the end of the cycle, you can put whatever tone on "Always Forward, Drill Sergeant" to make it sound any way you want. lol. I laughed at those who said "Thank you, D.S." which was always followed up with a DS yelling "Don't thank me! Thank your recruiter!" I was 27 when I enlisted and turned 28 in BCT. On the first day in the bay, the bay DS, a skinny little black guy who was funny as Hell, came out to us lined up around the killzone. I was towards the front. There were 64 of us females. He asks, "Who has ever been arrested for assault?" Being an honest person, I raised my hand (no worries, it was verbal, not physical and it was to the 17 year old who was sleeping with my husband when I had 3 young children) anyways.....I look around without moving my head and see I'm the only one with my hand raised. He grins, points at me, and says, "Great! You're bay boss!" Bay Boss is a complete nightmare. Responsible for all the females, responsible for the bay, no personal time. Towards the end of the cycle, that DS was sitting in his office. I knocked, he told me to enter, asked me what I wanted. I said, "Can I not be Bay Boss anymore, DS?" With a huge grin, he set his pen down and leaned back in his seat. He asked, "What's the matter, PFC? You wanna QUIT?!" I'm a redhead, not a blonde and there was no way he was going to hear the word "quit" from my mouth. I held my head up high while standing at Parade Rest, looked him in the eyes, and said, "No, Drill Sergeant! I would just like to afford the opportunity to someone else!" Now I was grinning. He was trying not to laugh and told me "Negative." I left with a "Always Forward, Drill Sergeant." with a tone of defeat. Later that night, he came out of his office, pointed at me, told me I stole a roll of toilet paper and was now fired as Bay Boss. There were only 2 weeks left. I was confused at first as I didn't steal anything and there was no reason to steal t.p. as it was always stocked, but then I put it together that he did that for me. DS Wynn was freaking AWESOME!!!!!!!
When a drill sargent tells you to do something it's always good to ask him "why."
Or ask, "Do I have to?" They love recruits who dare to question them. Shows you have guts!
