It sounds like this whole crew likes buying food😉 Seriously, if you’ve ever been “food insecure,” there is nothing that makes you feel more wealthy than have a well stocked pantry, freezer, garden, and kitchen.

In response to the call for no more spending, we stand in solidarity with you, Tessie. Over the past years, many of us have been diligently getting ready and safeguarding our possessions in anticipation of numerous uncertainties. Just last week, I decided to go through things and contribute items to those who are in need, things I haven't used in years. It's an incredibly empowering experience.

I justified spending because it was at thrift stores. I also have come to realize I used it as a stress reliever and a coping mechanism trying to fill the holes in my life ie emotional and communication anorexia in my marriage.

Tessie, don't be ashamed of the food issue. I'm 68 now and when I was a kid I was raised on a farm. We worked hard and always had what we needed but not everything we wanted. We were all used to not asking for much. I will never forget this..one year one of my Dad's long time friends came to visit us. They wanted to go to the nearest larger town about 17 miles away. My Dad told them I could show them how to get there. Once there they told me I could buy what ever I wanted! I couldn't believe it I had so many options so...my response was that I wanted to go to the grocery store! They thought that was so funny but I realize that after all the decades that have passed my response would be the same! Some of us are just plain and simple foodies!

Tess for me I have been in a place in my life where I raised five kids on my own with no help. I owned my own home and cars and couldn't get help.. we had a hard few years.. and I grew gardens harvested neighbors gardens when they were finish putting up what they wanted. Bought sale items and stored it away... I have been where we didn't have food.. and I made a promise to my kids they would never have to live Thur that again... With all that being said.. I am a firm believer in food storage. I am a fire believer in having a well stocked house... But only things we will use... My pantry has saved us many times and when 2020 hit it saved family members as well... But like you I have to keep myself in check as I can go overboard... I believe it was because I know and have felt hunger.. and it's not fun..

Hi Tessie! We are all feeling the pinch financially. I like buying food too! My daughter called me, and told me about her plans to step out in faith. I am very proud of my daughter, who just became an entrepreneur. She is working from home! She is creating journals and calendar planners. She is working from home! Well, her calendar planner included a section of spending and finances! I told here everyone needs that calendar planner! We all go through periods of excess and lack. Pulling back on spending is wisdom. Well, Tessie, you have prepared your household well, for the leaner times. You are indeed a Proverbs Woman. Here is the justification for you. You have known lack and thrive anyway. A wise woman rises early in the morning to prepare the meal for her family. She works with her hands. Her husband is blessed, because he lacks nothing and can trust his wife fully. Her children rise up and call mama, blessed. Tessie, you are worthy of such praise. Hugs!

Tessi, you are not alone in this at all! When "the world is coming to an end" mentality kicked in a few years ago, I bought and stored a lot (it's just hubby and me). In the past 6 months or so I had a realization that I had too much. I also realized with just 2 people, we don't consume that much food. I made it my goal to eat down this hoard. I had frozen veggies and potatoes in the freezer that were getting severely freezer burn. I turned them into various soups and ate them. I had pork, beef and poultry that I acquired from my son. I just kept pulling out an item and making into something for dinner. I have also hoarded up toiletries and cosmetics and same thing, I just keep using what I have. I have only been buying fresh fruits, veggies and dairy. I was also loving the thrift stores for decor justifying that it's inexpensive. I recently realized I have a bunch of decor boxed in the basement of family things. So now I've been shopping my basement. I was mad at myself for letting it get out of hand, but am now just happy that I've turned this around. Even a couple times this week, after visiting family, I was driving home and thinking how some Panda Express would taste so good for lunch. Then I think about what that one meal would cost, and how I can eat at home. It's not easy as I still want that Panda Express, but I am not going to do it. So see, we all have a story.

I have to agree with you on the food issue. We have two freezers, a pantry, and cupboards full of food that we need to use up before we buy anymore. I have always had plenty but stocked up even more with rumors flying around the past few years. After watching the news this week, I am glad to have a little extra to get us through these uncertain times. Providing for our family comes natural to wives and mothers, don't feel bad about that.

You are absolutely not alone! I am addicted to clearance sales. I'm getting better. I also did not grow up handling finances. My husband paid all the bills. I don't have to watch my spending, but that does not discount the fact that I am required, by God, to be a good steward of what He has blessed me with. I'm also required to be disciplined and have boundaries in every area of my life. When I get out of control with my spending, I feel God take my face in His hands and turn my face to His face and say, very sweetly, very gently, "You need to stop." Stopping is not easy. It does not feel good. But what I do is put some guidelines in place and with the help of God, follow them. Thank you for this video. Thank you for all your videos!!!

We did the same, making our home our sanctuary, fixing up things here and there. We bought our home in 1995, paid off 4 years ago and we still have to be very careful with our spending. Love your honesty and content, and in my opinion, the only ones that have anything negative to say are probably jealous…I think you’re the bees knees!

I have a channel that covers using what you have. It is going to be interesting to see you use the stuff you have preserved and prepared throughout the winter to keep you and your husband fed in the cold winter coming. See it as a challenge like everything else. In the cold winters of the 1800's they lived off of the storage they had all winter long. There is your challenge in my humble opinion. Happy cooking by using what you have!

For more than a year now I have taken a picture of every receipt, totaled monthly and other amounts, and have made extensive notes about food. I have worked really hard not to "hoard" too many of one item, and have worked hard at rotating my stock. Even as I sit here right now, I realize that I just told my hubby that I want to can some beans this week. And then someone gave me some lovely canned beans. Are they like the ones I can? In my mind not, but I am right now telling myself that I don't need to can more beans this week because I have enough right now. Let's use what we have. I'm with you, Tessie!

You are not alone. I am guilty as well. After toilet paper shortage of 2020 I hoard that as well. I am now trying to cook from my 3 freezers, 2 refrigerators and big stocked pantry. The only things I buy now are eggs, milk and cheese as we need it. It was a real problem for me for awhile but I am getting a handle on it now. I’ve been saving a lot of money doing that. Thank you for talking about this. No one wants food insecurity.

Nothing wrong with loving food and preserving food etc. Things could be a lot worse lol I am guilty of being frugal however. If I find clearance sale etc. Sometimes I buy items because it's such a good deal but I don't really need it. So this is something that need to work on. Example I have measuring spoons. I found a sale on them and bought two more sets. Did I really need to no but I bought them anyway. So this is something I need to work on. I don't need to buy it just because it's on sale. I'm on a limited budget being retired. And is do good with budgeting most of the time . But there are times I fall short so we always have things to work on😊

Oh Tessie you really crack me up sometimes! I got a kick out of this video and you're confessions. We do all I guess have our weakness points and even at almost 84 I still haven't mastered mine all the time either. Mine would be I can't pass a book sale be it at the library book store, or the senior center here in town I always find a book and I really don't need anymore in the house. Mine you these are really cheap books too but I have to bring one home. Honestly I don't know if I will live long enough to read them all but there you go! Also I love to buy the Hershey bags of miniature candy bars especially the Mr. Goodbars in the bag. Snacks too. Not one for clothes and things for the house unless necessary at my age I think I can treat myself don't you. Fun video look the other way when you go by a grocery store for awhile. P.s. this was such a fun video with your personality coming through so naturally. And it’s completely understandable to be concerned about food. For many people that’s a core part of their mindset. It is for my older daughter because she spent the first five years of her life in an orphanage in Ukraine. So it doesn’t matter that she’s spent a dozen years now with an abundance of food- it’s always a concern for her.

I’m guilty of the food buying as well. In 2008/2009 when things went south, we lost money and were strapped. I’ve always had a full pantry, and it got us through. From that time on, I’ve build a bigger pantry and garden, learned new ways of preserving and ways to purchase more food cheaper. But I must stop, we are out of storage space. I think it’s just a woman’s instinct to be this way. Read Proverbs 31. ❤

You are not alone in having something you love to purchase. I have to say food is less frivolous than my guilty pleasure. I love to purchase lug brand handbags. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved purses and it has not changed since I became an adult. I have a nice collection of handbags and bags that you can take on trips. I’ll buy the brand lug, which is not a high-end brand necessarily but it’s good quality. But I myself have put myself on a ban because I just simply don’t need anymore and it is the time to hold onto our Pennies which I think most of us should do during these times. I have a little planner where I write things I’m trying to work on about myself, one of the things I have is watch your pennies because little things add up. So just know that you are not alone. Have a cozy evening. ❤

From the time we're all little children, there's no question about it, Tessie! Food = security! So... yes, you're absolutely right! You truly are not alone!
When you throw in the fact that we are practically bombarded day and night with messages about "shortages of this and recalls of that" -- it's easy to see why our anxiety levels about having enough food to get through an emergency have been going up, up, up, especially over the last decades (pandemics, financial crashes, weather events that affect crops, etc., etc.)!
But I'd like to point out a couple of (I hope) encouraging facts. First, as far as I can tell, you have never taken your faith in God and replaced it with "faith in your pantry"! You have always acknowledged that Our Father has cared for you and yours, and he will continue to do that. And second, if you have managed to lose 100 pounds over the past year, you are doing something right! Very right! You may be a "foodie" (like me) but you surely do have things under control! 😀 (At the moment I'm trying -- like a lot of people -- to "eat down my pantry"! What made me think that I would need 4 jars of olives? LOL!)
I can understand hubby's point and you're a terrific spouse for being able to communicate so well with him about this. (I'm sure he has his areas too where he plans to trim the budget regarding "guy stuff." 😀 ) As you said, these conversations can be "challenging" -- to say the least. But you and Kenny have a lot of years of marriage behind you, and right now that seems like a huge blessing in being able to navigate through these "lean times" with good and loving communication! As the current expression goes: "Girl. You've got this!" Blessing to you both!
