Vacuum hose fittings/adapters exist (and can be 3D printed because there are many .stl files for free download) so you can insert your larger container of choice between the shop vac and your mud source. Nothing need be sucked into the shop vac.
I definitely fall into the "diy because I don't have 1000s to spend on a tradesman". I do however have enough jobs around the house to justify a new tool every time I start on something. Plus learning is the spice of life.

You can haul it with trash bags and backfill with gravel is the best. Depends on the situation
