Minecraft: Outer Wilds Quantum Shards Datapack Showcase

  • This is a showcase of a datapack I made for Minecraft which adds functionality for the quantum shards from Outer Wilds.
A "connection ID" is basically just how the datapack determines which shard it's dealing with. Running the "connect everything" command will find every connection with ID 0 (the default) and set their IDs to the next available number. This makes it so you never accidentally have overlapping connections, which could be a pain to deal with.
The "Manually connect locations" prompt seen when reloading can be clicked to autofill a command which will allow you to set the locations with the default ID to any ID of your choice; this is useful for adding new shards or locations to preexisting systems without needing to make a whole new one.
Feel free to check out my code using the download link here! If you use this for any purpose, please remember to give me proper credit.
    Datapack download: drive.google.c...
    Installation instructions:
    1. Download the file from Google Drive
    2. Open the datapacks folder in the world create screen in Minecraft, as shown
    3. Open the zip file, and move the folder from inside it to the datapacks folder
    4. Finish creating the world. Everything should be set up!
I'd be happy to answer any questions in the comments!

Imagine standing on one of these, pausing and unpausing, only to find you’re in a totally different place

i was thinking about something similar recently, but i can't really think of a good way to have the player "blink" for the rule of quantum entanglement to work. that is,
      1. if you're standing on one and look up, it just leaves in the datapack's current state
      2. since complete darkness is still visible ingame, the effect doesn't really work so well
but if i can think of a good system, i'll definitely try to make this work! it would be super cool

@@MDJ287 maybe, instead of an amethyst crystal, you use the actual block so the player can stand on it
And then add an if so that if the player looks away from the block but is touching it, the block still doesn’t move
For pitch black, I’d say how about just limiting it to a certain light level and (if possible) surrounding sound level.
Additionally, you can also joint that with any input that completely blocks the player’s fov. Opening inventory doesn’t, so it wouldn’t work then, but pausing typically does, so then that would work
Im not a code guy so idk wtf I’m talking about but these are just my ideas

@@ShadowDancer1000 these are some interesting ideas!
i probably actually could implement the quantum object only moving when you're not touching it, but i'm not entirely sure what you mean by "limiting it to a certain light level." if you turn your gamma up, you can see even when there is no light.
also, i don't think i can detect player pausing (not to mention that pausing just darkens the screen and doesn't completely block it) so that idea is probably out...
now i'm really thinking about it though, you probably don't need actual darkness. if you could just use some item to have the quantum object move at will, then entanglement would work properly even though you can see it happening. less immersive, but more feasible.
i might look into it if i also find a solution to the rule of quantum imaging (which i discussed in another comment).

you could consider the player being in total darkness if they wear a pumpkin. it would also be really cool if entanglement worked with any entity standing on the shard@@MDJ287

@@MDJ287 so you said you needed pitch darkness in order for it to canonically work, right? And yes, the gamma strat is cheese, but my point is maybe if you are standing on the crystal in an area with a light level of say 5 and below, quantum entanglement can happen.
In fact, when the light level reaches a certain threshold (such as x

thanks! i was actually thinking of making the tower of quantum trials from outer wilds, but i can't think of a way to get the rule of quantum imaging working (since displaying a screenshot is completely unreasonable) but if i can think of one i'll definitely update the pack!

@@MDJ287 displaying a screenshot wouldn't NEED to be unreasonable; it could be some cosmetic camera mod, then log whether at the moment of photographing, the object was being observed or not. bit of gymnastics, the cosmetics of the feature are the tougher part

@@quantumblauthor7300 i suppose i should clarify, i would like to do do this only within a datapack (i.e. no mods). it's certainly a neat idea though, and i'd be interested to see another project use this concept! storing whether an object was observed at the moment a picture was taken doesn't sound very hard, but ideally the player would have some way of knowing which objects are in their "image"

funnily enough, it actually works using an entity in its current state! if you just change the quantum object's ID from a marker to some other entity, you'll have an entity doing exactly this.

It can work with any block, I just don't think it's coded in right now but should be easily modifiable if you know your way around a datapack. You could also retexture amethyst crystals.

Yes, you can use other blocks relatively easily - I've been thinking a little about adding larger structures (think, the archways in the Tower of Quantum Trials) but haven't gotten around to it just yet
