  • Tartans have become synonymous with Scottish clans. A Scottish clan member's crest badge is made up of a heraldic crest, encircled by a strap and buckle which contains a heraldic motto.

My 3rd and 4th great-grandfather Hastings were born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, and they even went to the Church of Scotland. William Hastings served under King Edward IV as the lord chamberlain (who was later beheaded by King Richard III) had his own arm badge. The Hastings have been known far back in the days of the Norman Conquest of England during the Battle of Hastings. There's no current clan badge/ Tartan for the Hastings. I'm about giving up on this Tartan/clan badge thing.

I don't know where you're getting your information. I'm only 5 minutes in, and I've noticed at least 2 errors. The Gordon tartan you presented is Gordon of Esselmont. It's a combination of the Gordon #2 sett from 1930-1950 and the original 92nd Regiment sett, the latter of which is the common sett. The Gunn tartan presented is from 1842, is not recognized by the chief, and is rarely worn. The 1810 sett, which is the recognized clan tartan, has blue checks in with the black, essentially MacKay with a red overcheck on the green. And now, looking at your MacKay tartan, I see you've got the Morgan/MacKay Blue rather than the main clan tartan. Did you just take everything out of the Vestiarium Scoticum as if it's the authority on clan tartan?
