They fell behind in their "quota" for conquering and converting worlds during the great crusade because they spent so much time preaching to the natives about the Emperor and building temples and monuments.
They weren't just installing new governments and infrastructure, they were teaching faith. But in the end, there is no greater villain than one who's beliefs have been shattered by the very thing they believed in. Not just reprimanded, but ridiculed and scorned as fools for their beliefs by the Emperor himself.

There's also the fact that the Anchorite, as one of Lorgar's pious bois, would have studied daemonology, basically summoning warp entities and channeling the power of the Dark Gods into the material realm. We have Dark Apostles like Marduk summoning daemonettes into real space aboard a Drukhari vessel for example, through faith.
After his conversion back to the Imperial Creed, perhaps the Anchorite used this same ability to channel the power of the Dark Gods but to channel the Astronomnicon instead?

Perhaps The Anchorite has, for lack of better term, "evolved"?
Unlike other dreadnoughts, it seems implied that The Anchorite has been awake for most of these ten thousand years, making him not only a contender for oldest, but the most continually active space marine in the galaxy. It's possible that there's some hidden potential that only manifests after such a long span of time. Astartes draw many of their unique qualities from their gene-seed, which in turn comes from their primarch, and we know that the primarchs themselves can develop new powers over time, as demonstrated by Corvus Corax and implied to be a possibility for Guilliman. This is associated with exposure to the warp, but described more as revealing something that was already present. It's possible that over sheer length of time, and enough opportunity for self-reflection, this hidden potential could be uncovered naturally, and Astartes could inherit some small fraction of that same hidden potential.
Maybe, then, the Anchorite has simply learned to tap into the supernatural power underlying the potency of his gene-seed, granting him some of the powers a hypothetical "pure" version of Lorgar would have had. Or he might have gone even further beyond, to Super Astartes level thr- [cough] sorry, to the original source the primarchs themselves were derived from, the Emperor.

Warsmith time: There is only one loyalist Word Bearer that we have encountered throughout the Horus Heresy, and in all likelihood the Anchorite is Narek of the Word. The power he exhibited is more than likely a manifestation of what we saw in Plague War, specifically the Emperor reaching out to eliminate potential threats. In terms of him encountering similar powers in the past we can take specific note of the Fulgurite spear, a shard of the Emperors power which Narek once held.
The simple fact that Narek held this solidified shard of the Emperors might and was not destroyed shows that he was able to at least in part endure the power of a living God. There is also the matter that the Word Bearers came for this particular renegade, Kor Phaeron or Erebus attempt to preach unity for their Legion, Narek would represent a threat to their schemes and a potential thorn in the side given what he knew of the 17th.

It's extremely unlikely that the Anchrotie is Bathusa Narek for one simple reason:
The Anchorite surrendered and was taken captive sometime around/just after the battle of Calth, while Narek was last seen with Eldrad Ulthraan hunting down the members of The Cabal just prior to the onset of the Siege of Terra itself.

Yes you are correct (it was about a year since I read that book last xD). But again, this doesn't change the fact that he couldn't have been the Anchorite since Narek was still active prior to the siege and the Anchorite was locked within some Macraggian dungeon.

@ボイス Think about it: You have Gods of Chaos. THEN -you have all of humanity worshipping "The Emperor". Remember! The Eldar *created* their OWN gods. By worshipping the Emperor, mankind *creates* "The God Emperor".-separate from the physical 'Corpse Emperor' on the Golden Throne. In the Psychic Awakening you have seen manifestations of fiery angels and golden eagles on planets with mass awakening of psykers as Order Daemons . (plus Corvus Corax with shadow powers as a loyalist 'daemon' primarch, which all loyalist primarchs can become. Corax offered to show Roboute what his 'true' form would be but Bobby G. rejected him because he did not trust him.)
*Therefore* you have Khorne/Nurgle/Tzeentch/Slaanesh/Malice *VS* Khaine/Isha/Cegorach/Ynnead/The God Emperor. Hence, Gods of Chaos vs Gods of Order. Don't forget Cegorach has been pulling his own 'Just as Planned' shenanigans because he switched the planets that Fulgrim and Khan would land on -Slaanesh originally wanted The Khan not Fulgrim. In addition he already set up 'The Final Jest' /Rhana Dandra
in which Slaanesh sacrifices himself to save the Eldar as the Immaterium and Materium are both destroyed.
Big Emps/E-Money has his throne failing, no one knows how to repair it. GW has already said in a Warhammer community article how the Imperium could end in a Psychic Overload with a rift bigger than the Cicatrix Maledictum. It's gonna happen, ボイス 9nth edition is like Warhammer 'End Times' (The Wolf Times that Leman Russ talked about) which leads to something NEW for 40k instead of Age of Sigmar for Warhammer Fantasy Battles! I was a soldier riding a horse wielding a spear to charge an invasion, I did not know what enemy I the legion of horsemen facing but the skies were full of flashes of light like lightning and shots going up the sky. Later I would get knocked off my horse and was fallen into piles of rubble concealing me in it, hours of war passed and only when the light of morning shines where it all went silent I suddenly hear a voice of a child desperately begging someone to dig me out and her black silhouette was the first thing a saw but slowly fade away revealing a small child with long white hair, wearing a red armor like of the sisters of battle holding a staff to her right hand with giant glowing wings behind. She even praised the emperor for my survival of the war only for me to look around and all I saw was a flattened red field covered in dead bodies as far as the eye can see.
