lady can play ... her decon of Hesitation is near genius ... totally original sound on familiar tunes that gives 'em her own depth ... master level picking and so easy and understated...wow... a bright and shiny star...truly a guitar player's player
No tuner needed, this is perfect as it is! Won’t fit when you listen to it in your clean office or living room. However, gonna be perfect driving through Kentucky with your old Mustang..
I have two conflicting responses to this video: 1. I need to play my guitar immediately, and 2. I want to throw it out the window. Where have you been all my life?
Ive never heard of her until today when i found out she will open for Godspeed You Black Emperor at Pioneer Town CA, I can't fucking wait! Going to have to take shrooms for this one.
I love reading all these experts in tuning... Guess none of them ever heard of just intonation and perfect intervals. And how all standard guitars are pretty much out of tune since they use equal fret spacing across all strings. Guess they don't know that you can also tune in several ranges of Hz. And that some styles of music are heavily based on the dissonance that occurs from instruments without perfect intervals. Like jazz, where there's a constant juggle between conflicting states and the resolve of these conflicts .
I love some watching some doing something well .. be it a sports person, artist, crafts person or musician... all terms that can be interchangeable anyway.
ecsellent soundscape around the ol' fav....i wonder what tuning she's in maybe the whole git is simply detuned about 1 1/2 steps i tired it at home but that's not quite it...each instrument is particularly tuned not out of tune...excellent musicians for roots fans this is a banquet
after reading the comments, I'm glad I don't know so much about music and how its supposed to sound. I wouldn't be able to enjoy this (and other music) as much as I do. here's to ignorance.
The thing is though that you know more about how music is supposed to sound than so many of these haters -- it's supposed to sound enjoyable (or if not necessarily enjoyable, then visceral and powerful in some way). Anderson is a fantastically gifted player who's absolutely in touch with her instrument, and if you're able to understand that then you know all you need to to enjoy this and any music. All those commenting about the minor details of tuning are just nerds with some kind of superiority complex, who are just letting their own insecurities get in the way of them enjoying a great performance. Sucks to be them!
The negative commenters know much less than you and much, much less than they think. They have been warped by over produced, auto tuned, dehumanized “music.”
SingleMalt77005 the first one is some kind of Gretsch but I’m not sure the model. I think the steel is a Dickinson lap steel. The third is a Gibson Es-125 I believe, and the fourth is just a fender Stratocaster
I want to play some with you, im not a player, i'm a song writer, always like a great back-up guitar, be well, i've been to the sink holes, df n champ-peanuts and scraps, dawn
I mean this with minimal offence intended - she tunes the guitar how she wants and for her style. If it sounds to you out of tune, that's fine - it's how it's supposed to be. Just fuck off with your misplaced pedantry. You're not an expert in guitar music - she is.
DandeB88 No, I think he is right. The second guitar is out of tune. It's a not a great excuse to say that playing notes that do not work together is how "she tunes the guitar how he wants and for her style." Out of tune instruments is not a new art form, they're just out of tune instruments.
DandeB88 It's out of tune mate. Lots of musicians don't know how to properly tune their instruments... it's not an insult or anything, it's just the simple truth. Wether you enjoyed the song or not has nothing to do with how the tension on those strings was adjusted at that very moment in time.
I couldn't listen for long . I'm sure she has heart and soul but a tuner would be a nice addition . I read the other comments and I don't care if this is contrary to your views .

I’ve stayed at this woman’s house with her and my mom is a good friend of hers. So proud to say that :)
You are blessed!
Yeah that’s rad !
Her sentiment about 'traditionals' is absolutely beautiful. Artists like her are such rare and special gifts to the human race.

Where has she been all my life? This was probably one of my most favorite tiny desk concerts that I've seen so far. Great stuff.
This is the best thing I have seen on UA-cam in a long time!
I have two conflicting responses to this video:
1. I need to play my guitar immediately, and 2. I want to throw it out the window.
Where have you been all my life?
exactly.
Wow ! She is so cool , and humble too I get that vibe from her . What an inspiration. 🙂🎸💕💕💕💕💕🎸🎸🎸
Love her guitars !!!!!!!!!!!!!
That guitar tone at the beginning is sweet!!
Beautiful playing. So great to be introduced to this wonderful musician and musicologist.
Saw her live once, she's really talented
Thank you Marisa and NPR, refreshing and live!!
I keep going back to this video. Gotta be a good sign. Very powerful performance! Thank you.
This is very, very precious material.
Que apresentação maravilhosa !!! Me deixou muito feliz poder ouvir e ver a Marisa tocar :)
whether her guitar is tuned or not, it's irrelevant. the power of her composition carries the song and plus, it sounds fucking good.
Pedro Nascimento, ahem to that.
It's definitely tuned. Just a little loosey goosey.
so much lyric without a word...worship on headphones.
I must have heard this atleas 20 times, its so great
Marissa i love you're music ♥️🦊 thank you so much and congratulation for youre work 🌈🙂
What a beast! Some great playing here for sure.
American Primitive! kind of a rare treat!
Marissa stämmt sich nicht gegen die Zeit; sie lässt sie einfach sausen. Sie macht ihr Ding. Großartig!
If you like this, be sure to check out John Fahey, the progenitor of modern solo fingerstyle guitar
I don't really know how to reply to that since I already love him too. But yeah Fahey was a rocker.
Ive never heard of her until today when i found out she will open for Godspeed You Black Emperor at Pioneer Town CA, I can't fucking wait! Going to have to take shrooms for this one.
Wonderful !! Thank you !
Much love from Israel.
Awesome. So much emotion.
She's playing at the NPR office, not you (the people who complain). There must be a reason for that.
I love reading all these experts in tuning...

Equal fret spacing?
For different string gauges.
Bro, the guitar is out of tune.
She's great, and I loved the video, but the guitar is out of tune.
I think people just don't know what slide guitar sounds like.
For me, who loves “out music” and boundary pushing as well as down the middle roots and Americana, this is very pleasing to the ears.
Nice style, good taste. This was fun for me, I'd buy a ticket if she was performing down at the Bluebird :)
Amazing. Thanks for sharing.
That is why I love guitar music.
I love some watching some doing something well .. be it a sports person, artist, crafts person or musician... all terms that can be interchangeable anyway.
I think this cool
Me gusta su Música ! Yes !!!
I am looking forward to meeting Marisa at Aarhus concert, Atlas and Voxhall

Wonderful!!
Awesome! Love!

Last song on the fender was bad ass. Really interesting picking style. Some words would have been proper. Still a thumbs up
" hard times come again no more "
What a lady. Bravo!
Blues you can use.
amazing
Soul baby, soul!
Really cool
Marissa Anderson made me want to go electric.
anybody knows good blues guitarists that play without band/singer?
coldminded21 john fahey, leo kottke, i can go on if you want
robbie basho, william tyler, max ochs, jack rose,
Very cinematic.
wow
Cool
Can anyone ID those guitars she plays?
SingleMalt77005 the first one is some kind of Gretsch but I’m not sure the model. I think the steel is a Dickinson lap steel. The third is a Gibson Es-125 I believe, and the fourth is just a fender Stratocaster
Thanks@@ice00700
Anyone know which guitar she's playing in the first song?
Niné Cipolletti Looks like a Gretsch Clipper to me
Trinosophes !
Anyone talking shit about "tuning" doesn't understand this style of music
genia!
I want to play some with you, im not a player, i'm a song writer, always like a great back-up guitar, be well, i've been to the sink holes, df n champ-peanuts and scraps, dawn

Out of tune. Some people like that, but it's like chalkboard and stepping on glass to me
The second guitar is completely out of tune. But her playing style is very interesting.

Nope
Good guitar player, but that lap steel guitar was a bit out of tune.
I couldn't listen for long . I'm sure she has heart and soul but a tuner would be a nice addition . I read the other comments and I don't care if this is contrary to your views .
No singing? How boring.
Boring for you maybe.
Not everyone can sing but pretty much anyone can play guitar if you put your mind to it.
Joe Brautigam anyone can sing or play guitar, few do it well
the guitars ARE singing
thats kinda silly
That was honestly the worst rendition of "Hard times" I've ever heard. Somebody please take that guitar away from her.
and you are.........?
Thanks, glad you're an expert. Where can we watch your tiny desk concert?
I hope you never have to get up there and perform
She is not worthy of a Tiny Desk Concert, or even hearing for free on the street..........................
@pharmerdavid
Lots of masturbator judges on here with a Phd from Trump University
Cool
