Such a hard decision. I want a Polaroid because of the size of the picture and the nostalgia of it. I use to have the Barbie one until it broke. :/ I have the Instax mini and although I like it, I'm not a fan of how tiny the pictures are. I love that their new SQ6 has square photos even though it's still slightly small, but I sure wasn't a fan of their wide instax/film. I like the SQ6 too because it's small and easily carried and travel around with which I do a lot. I'm starting to lean towards the Instax because of how small and easy it is to carry around plus you get 2 extra films, but the nostalgic of the Polaroid one!
its not a hard decision, its a very simple decision , buy fuji instax , cheaper , better looking film , great colours , Polaroid, SUPER EXPENSIVe, film suck because reacts a lot at the temperature , so in 8 shots at 2.5 dolars each , you can get 2 good fotos , in fuji in 10 shots at the most expensive 0.74 cents you have 10 great photos .

For me the decision comes down to this: *Fuji* - for quality of image and price *Polaroid* - for the hardware and vintage look The fuji films are significantly cheaper and the photos are significantly sharper with more accurate colors but the cameras are not as interesting or fun. The only reason I really shoot Polaroid is to have a chance to use my SX-70 which is an amazing camera. Often times, the Polaroid Originals film comes out with blemishes because the film is so "picky," which is not always great when you are spending $2 per picture. On the other hand, my fuji pictures almost always come out perfectly, unless I screw up the exposure. If you prefer the "vintage" look and want to use some of the interesting and fun Polaroid cameras, then Polaroid film is you best bet. 🙂
yeah, i agree 100%. It is disingenuous to say Fuji is "a little bit cheaper". For what 8 shots of SX-70 costs 'i can get 3X as many Wide images. THREE TIMES AS MANY PHOTOS. This isn't "a little bit" it's an order of magnitude difference. PO has improved in last 2 years, colors better, etc. But it STILL has problems, especially when it isn't fresh out of the factory. And now we have the "white fire" issue in 20-30% of frames. They should be using R&D dollars on making better films and cameras, not silly colored cameras and frame borders.
Agreed. Polaroid’s library of cameras is abundant, and Fuji’s first party cameras are less aesthetically pleasing. Have you looked into the third party cameras that take Fuji Instax film (e.g. Lomo’instant and MiNT)? They’re MUCH more expensive than what Polaroid has to offer, but their products are brand new, as opposed to being refurbished/used.
I shot Polaroid for 30 years and again when Impossible Project revived them. However, I love Fuji Instax....the sharpness and the color are so much better than Polaroid. The artsy, pastel, soft focus Polaroid disappoint and always have. The only reason I manipulated Polaroid images was because the Polaroid image straight from the camera wasn't very good and manipulation helped. And then there is the price.
I have both. I was given my granddad's Polaroid 600 on my 10th birthday. The film is expensive ( at least its gone down since originals) but it has this look that is so warm, Something unique. I use it for special occasions and any meaningful and preplanned photo I wanna take. I also have a instax mini 9. Its small but its something u can use, take photos with at a party, school, friends. Its just a nice social camera. But, it doesn't have that same warm, imperfect feel of the 600. Both are great in there own way. Both offer something tangible, that you can hold, pass round and there is only one of that exact photo.
Hi! Great video but a few things to point out - it looks like a lot of the video was focused on the "mainstream" Instax cameras and films (the ones produced by Fuji like the Mini 8/Mini 9). In the US, you can get the Instax films in 20-packs for about $12 (Mini) or $15 (Wide) - these give you 2 1/2 times the shots from a Polaroid Originals pack for about 2/3rds of the price. There are also a lot of specialty framed films (probably 30-40 varieties from the licensed character ones to colored ones (Black film, Rainbow, Pastel, Sky blue). For creativity, while the FUJI Instax cameras are very "safe", you can get very creative results using the LOMOGRAPHY cameras (AUTOMAT, AUTOMAT GLASS and WIDE) which give a much more retro feel, manual focusing, multiple lenses, studio light sync (on the wide) and multiple exposures/"Splitzer" photos. I do really like the Polaroid look and feel, but I think something like the LOMOGRAPHY Instax cameras might be a better comparison to the Polaroid Originals.. just stay away from the original Lomo'Instant :)
Hey Mike, with the price yes Instax is cheaper thats what i said in my video and i did a price comaprison on one of the comments below with the prices we have in europe. I-Type: € 0,0320 / cm2 Instax Square: € 0,0260 / cm2 Instax Mini: € 0,0316 /cm2 so it's not that much cheaper in europe with the prices you mention, it's a bit more but this calculation is per cm2 and not per picture I only use Lomography cameras and i never talked about the standard fuji camera, dont know why you think so. I kinda like the Lomo cams but i'm as with Polaroid cameras missing the complete manual control.
Why stay away from the original lomo instant? I think a lomo is the best choice for me. I love the polaroid film, but it is just so expensive. And lomo brings such a more retro feel than the fuji instax cameras. So thank you for your comment; I did not know lomo had instant cameras
I have recently acquired a Polaroid impulse 600, and it is just awesome. I now have cameras from both companies and love both for their differences. Mind you, Polaroid film prices will make me think twice about pressing the shutter button but it's worth it regardless.
The problem I have with Impossible is that it is still too muddy of an image. People say it looks retro but I do not buy that. An image looks retro because its old and has time to fade, not because it is manufactured to look that way. What is it going to do once it starts to actually fade? I think you answered that when you mentioned your old Impossible B&W shots. Another thing, reds is a real problem with it. Every time I shoot something that is pure red, it shows up as dull orange. I'm not sure Spectra uses the same chemistry as the 600 film. I shot the same thing the other day with Spectra and 600 and Spectra film showed much better blacks without a color cast in them.
Well there are a tone of different types of analog filmes that all have a distinct look to it, the one for Polaroid Originals Film at the moment is the "muddy" one. I really like that style since it fits my style of photography and i dont want the film to be as clean as Fuji Instax. I can't tell you how the current color film will be in the future, but with old color films i didn't have a problem only with the black and white films. If you dont like Polaroid Originals why dont you use Fuji Instax? I'm pretty sure the chemistry is the same maybe it was a different production patch.
+Jose Herrera I dont think thats what they try, they are just stil trying to find a better formular and solution for their film. just look back at the start of impossible, the first films where trash and now look what we have is pretty good i think.
As someone who started with a Spectra and moved on to an sx-70, I can confirm that the spectra film looks closely like the instax in terms of contrast, but the colors are still softer.
I think it comes down to what camera you plan to use. With my my TL70 Instax Mini holds up and produces crisp even photos. If you plan to use any of these films with a point and shoot camera I HIGHLY suggest you purchase anything Instax. Youre going to come across so many bad shots might as well learn your camera with a less expensive film route. Polaroid is just too expensive in my opinion, especially for that "vintage" look. Being able to shoot double the amount with Instax wont discourage you on price and youll be able to figure out your camera settings so much quicker.
I have a sx-70 model 3 and a install mini 9 and its not comparible at all its totally different and depends on what you want, if you want to take a lot of photos that have same quality you buy instax, if you are more creative and want to "play" with the pictures and want that old school look you need the polaroid.. And dont forget the awsome smell of the polaroid when you open the pack!
So glad I stumbled on your channel - I have an old Polaroid One Step Flash which I had as a kid & just rediscovered (didn't think it would work, but happy days, it does!) I also have a lomo'instant automat which shoots instax mini (but with a lot more options than the fujifilm cameras I've used before) and I've had some ace results experimenting with ideas like putting blank 35mm negative film over the lens, so warm! Also just got an old Soviet 35mm camera called Cosmic Symbol (how could I not with a name like that?) super cheap & super excited for rediscovering my passion for analogue photography in this digital age! Your enthusiasm and love for the subject is obvious and I look froward to exploring your channel more... keep doing whatcha doin' - ya doin' it good! :D

I have both formats, I prefer shooting Polaroid 1000x more even with the price difference. Instax is cheaper but too clinical looking and the cameras all suck and are no fun shooting, I just use the mini for parties because it's cheap. If I'm shooting instant for fun, Polaroid all the way. I love the look and it's just the right size.
Well if you happen to be shooting a Fujifilm X-Series Camera or even their 100MP medium format cameras, Instax suddenly makes much more sense. You can permanently pair the instax printer and make a print while shooting a scene in just one button press. There is a reason why Fujifilm has invested so much into in camera raw conversion and editing tools. Such a nice workflow, spending more days shooting outside or in the studio and fewer hours in front of the computer.
Thank you! Yes I agree with you about the comparison. It's about the look and size: some people's preferences will always vary. I got my Polaroid last year (the OneStep2 and later bought a vintage SX70 and the newest, OneStep Plus). I've tried emulsion lifting with them, it's certainly fun! I have shot so much film that I should probably buy stakes in the company (hehehe!). I love this camera so much. The Fuji doesn't tempt me, although I can see the appeal for the price and for the size of the camera itself (it's more compact). For that reason when I need a smaller one to carry, I got an SX-70 (from a 2nd hand shop, it's one of the mid 1970's versions). It folds on itself and has a glass lens...but it's much more expensive compared to Fuji...but it's better to save money to get a better camera.
I actually quite like how Instax film looks. Both films have strong points, though the very long development time and the need for darkness for the Polaroid Originals films kind of break that for me, especially since in Canada a pack of PO costs 30 dollars.
Yes, it's all up to personal taste. Well the darkness is not the biggest point if you know how to cover the shot and let it develop inside of a pocket, there should be no problem. Also the new films are pretty good when it comes to how sensitive they are when coming out of the camera
Analog Things the double exposure looks fun. Maybe a step to step to do with double exposure, what you can do with the spectra format, now it's like that the sx-70 600 and I-type got all the attention.
Yeah Polaroid Originals is also not pushing the spectra format since the sales value is so much lower then for 600 and SX-70. Ok, i will try to make a special video about double exposure to cover it in general and one how to for spectra/image.
As a instant photographer I think you missed the mark completely on being creative, you have so mach technique to lern through composition, light, decisive moment and flash. I would agree with you on a lot of things in the video but in the end the price difference is substantial!!! And I don’t think you painted the right picture for people who don’t know what to choose. Technique and creativity disent come from wormer color of the film or size or the better camera with bettr features (although they do help) it comes from trile and error. The more you work at your craft the better you get. If you have the money to spend well done but if you don’t you can still be creative, and especially if you have limitations. The only place I wish fuji would step it up is with there camera and make a professional instax wide with a fast lens and some creative features
I mean, you still can't make transparent instax pics or do emulsion lifts with the instax film, so I think that's a big contributor to it not being as "creative" as Polaroid. If that's not an issue for you and you're looking to get better photographs, instax would be a great choice. I personally think they're different in their own way enough to warrant eventually owning both tbh.
I shoot both Polaroid and Instax and I honestly find them to be the same as far as being creative is concerned. Although you can manipulate the print itself on Polaroids, I've found I have far more "in-camera" creativity on Instax format due to some of the offerings from companies like lomography. They released an Instax wide back for their Bel-air camera and have just launched a Diana f+ instant Square shooter. Well worth if if you're looking to experiment with instant photography on a budget. I'll hold onto my sx70 sonar until I die, but if it wasn't for the folks at MiNT I wouldn't have many "in camera" options to choose from 😂
Keep up the great work. I am awaiting my MINT RF70 pre-order and your video test for the RF70 was very helpful. I'm sticking with fuji INSTAX WIDE over Polaroid Originals (Impossible), I buy 1 pack of what they call Polaroid Originals about every 6 months, the quality is still sub par and I might get 4 decent images out of the 8..... it's nothing like the original polaroids... I know, I've still got images from the 70's right up to my spectra in the 90's and 2000's.... I enjoy your knowledge, thanks and again, keep up the great work...
oh thats great, one of the few people that knows what the camera is worth. let me know how you like it, i'm really happy with it. yeah PO is by far not on the level of polaroid, my main problem is that they are not consistent in the production
My father used the old polaroid camera in 1962 and created on the couch 4 images of himself in black and white they were all smoking sitting on the couch with one standing all of them were the same black and white , looked like him all talking together. How did he do this, he did not photoshop or have DSLR? Does anyone know, please email and instruct me on how to achieve this effect on my picture. It was really extraordinary. He was quite a master of photography.
I've just got myself a Instax Mini 9 and a couple of fuji film, ran out the store and took a picture in a gloomy day oh wow went back to my child hood. Way back in the 80's in a Christmas (I was just a kid), I was given an original Polaroid the black one and I use to love that camera, for sure this new one will give me memories for ever with that cool look, great video thanks for the comparison :D
Torn between the two! But the polaroid films here in Indonesia is super expensive... As much as I want to buy the polaroid camera, my wallet isn't just thick enough. But definitely will buy the polaroid one later on
Jed Teng , Fuji has its immense size and resources to put Polaroid under if they really wanted to. Cameras that take Instax film are very limited quality wise. There are so many vintage Polaroid cameras available. These cameras were brilliantly engineered and executed compared to the current crop, with MiNT’s TLR being the exception, albeit with the super tiny Instax mini film. MiNTS SLR670 with Time Machine is a fantastic redux of the incomparable SX-70 as an example of excellence.

Talking about price, Instax really wins. But many decades of Polaroid brought us very awesome cameras, decades of Fuji Instax didn't. You won't find such neat models like a SX70 or Spectra/Image with Instax film. Whether it is the plastic lense, camera functions or the film itself. I would really love to have a SX70 equivalent for Instax Wide, but it doesn't exist. There are only 2-3 Instax cameras, that really make FUN while operating and shooting with them. One of them is an expensive SLR with Instax Mini film, the Neo 90 uses also the tiny film and the third one, one of those Lomography instant cameras with a glass lense and or many many functions like double-exposure et cetera. All in all, shooting the film should be also enjoyable. And at the moment, for this purpose, below 300€s, there are only Polaroid cameras.
+MrChrodo Yeah, you are right when it come to the choice of camera Fuji Instax real lets us down, i also dont enjoy the cameras that much. But to be honest there is no camera that can match the SX-70 ;)
My main issue is that instax wide is a really good film but instax wide cameras are complete trash. The Polaroid Originals films are now much better than they were in their earlier generations (under the Impossible name) but they are still fickle and prone to various quirks. When they work they work well. But that's the whole problem. That said they are considerably better than they were before. Basically whether you use Instax or Polaroid Originals you're making a compromise somewhere.
How can anyone justify the longevity of Polaroid films vs Instax? Fuji's far older FP100 series are still relatively color fast, they've got their stuff down on lock

Great video Marco. What is your experience with color saturation and color rendition with the i-type film? By other reports, the Instax film tends to lend a more accurate color reproduction. I shoot with Fuji instax cameras and film: have had poor luck with the Lomo automat glass: lens flare was so distracting I sent the camera back. Rob
+ranooshian If you want accurate colors fuji is way better, the i-typ film is actually just a 600 film without battery. Oh damn i will get the glass soon for a test.
And don't get me started on the multicolor frames. Nobody likes those. Every store I go to, the regular 600, B&W 600, and i-type films are sold out. Except the mulitcolor packs. Plenty of those at every store.

Is it possible to edit the Fuji film while it is produced? I'm talking about using metal while it is produced (scraping it or sth), leaving it under the sun, or in cold/warm surfaces, or even using various chemicals.
Is it possible that the polaroid 600 film will work with the fujifilm sq10? Theyre both square format and the same size so essentially it should work right?

You got to be kidding, Instax film is much better than Polaroid. It has stronger colours, better contrast, is sharper and develops much quicker. Plus Polaroid film can be unreliable, sometimes you'll get colour banding on the photo or parts of the photo undeveloped with areas just covered by a brown tinge.
Hey, I have a One Step Flash camera, it was a gift. I bought some impossible film but every photo I take looks pink, I takes indoors and outdoors photos chaining the light. How can I know if it's the camera or the film? I love your channel by the way.
Analog Things I thought it was pretty obvious, but ok. You undersell all of the the Fuji’s pros while simultaneously glossing over the polaroid’s faults. “Instax film is a little bit cheaper” it’s not a little bit cheaper... it’s less than half price? You don’t feel like you’re favouring the Polaroid just a little bit?
Instax has better chimestry and last longer and it's cheaper. As to creativity with the film it's all up to the photographer. My instax film can be moody vintage anytime I want. I can manipulate fuji instax chimestry in many ways and get the results I want. Fuji instax it's definitely more reliable material to work with. All my polaroid film has faded in some degree over time not instax. Your creativity is not limited by the film itself but by your imagination.
Fuji colors are more accurate and better than PO and it’s way cheaper. Polaroid is only used for nostalgia purposes but it’s not going to be the way it used to be
Aaah ja das schreckliche Dilemma. :) Die Instax Mini Filme sind relativ günstig, haben tolle Kameras mit vielen kreativen Funktionen (Mini 90, Automat Glass, TL70), dafür sind die Bilder so winzig, dass man kaum Details erkennen kann... Dagegen sind die Instax Wide Filme schön groß, bei manchen Motiven gefällt mir das Format da fast besser als das Polaroid’sche Quadrat ;). Aaaaber kaum gute Kameras, aka Dämlicher Auto-Blitz bei Fuji und (meiner Meinung nach) schlechte Linsen mit merkwürdigen Flares bei Lomo. Und falls ich mich nicht irre gibt es für das Wide Format nicht einmal den S/W Film... Vom Instax Square Format bin ich bisher noch nicht überzeugt, aber wohl nur, weil die SQ10 eine Digitale Kamera ist. Mal sehen wie sich die Lomo da schlägt. (Aber auch das Format ist wieder zu klein...) Und auf der anderen Seite hat man dann die PO Filme, die einfach unschlagbar sind, weil sie alles richtig machen was Format, Kreativität und auch Kameras angeht. Auch die Vielfalt der Filme ist sehr schön und praktisch, man kann immer wieder etwas Neues ausprobieren. Wäre da nur nicht dieser Preeeeeis 😰 Für mich als arme Studentin ist dieses Problem wahrscheinlich noch etwas präsenter, aber der Preisunterschied ist schon deutlich. Bekomme 20 instax Mini für 14,95€ und 8 PO 600 für 18,99€, das tut manchmal schon weh muss ich sagen... 😅 Aber wie immer, wenn man sich nicht entscheiden kann: ich benutze beides. 🤷🏽♀️ Freut mich aber auch zu hören, dass es mit dem 4x5 Prototyp so gut voran geht. :) Hoffe, dass es funktioniert. Eventuell könnte man sich ja dann auch mal daran wagen, die alten Land Cameras zu modden, beispielsweise für Instax Wide. Könnte mir vorstellen, dass die guten Kameras und der Film sich vertragen würden. :D Wäre einfach zu schade, wenn sie nach dem letzten Packfilm nur noch als Deko verstauben müssten... Bin auf jeden Fall voll dabei bei solchen Projekten, find ich super, dass Du sowas machst :)

Mit Instax Mini kann ich auch nicht wirklich was anfangen die Wide finde ich dafür ganz cool die Lomo Wide ist ganz ok für fotos und auch die normale Fuji Wide ist eine möglichkeit, ich warte ja seit ewigkeiten das Lomo ihr Belair Rückteil wieder verkauft aber ich glaube da bin ich schneller wenn ich selber ein neues entwickle. Ja diese Preisfrage ist nicht so einfach aber ich hab hier eine kleine Rechnung gemacht wieviel man pro cm2 bildfläche bei den unterschiedlichen filmen zahlt I-Type: € 0,0320 / cm2 Instax Square: € 0,0260 / cm2 Instax Mini: € 0,0316 /cm2 PO ist garnicht soviel teurer als man glaub im vergleich zu Instax Mini, natürlich bekommt man aber bei Instax Mini mehr Fotos raus und das auf das schauen die leute halt. Das 4x5 geht wirklich gut vorran auf Instagram hab ich gestern eh eine Story dazu gepostet. Ende des Jahres will ich eignetlich mein erste Foto damit machen, schauen wir mal. Ja dieses Land kamera ding ist schon in meinem kopf und hat sich ziemlich festgesetzt, aber ich hab noch keine idee wie ich es lösen kann, skizzen sind aber schon vorhanden und es wird immer weiter daran geschraubt, irgendwann gibt es sicher was dazu, aber vorher mal das Belair nachbauen.
Hätte auch wirklich gerne eine Instax Wide Kamera, aber auf meiner Liste steht jetzt erstmal die SX-70 ganz oben, danach schaue ich ich da mal um. :D Bezogen auf die Bildgröße sind die Preise natürlich schon ähnlich, aber gerade wenns ums ausprobieren und kreativ sein geht muss man ja schon eher nach der Anzahl der Bilder gehen. Experimentiere deshalb eher mit den Instax Minis, obwohl es mit den Polaroids bestimmt noch spaßiger wäre. Aber ich gebe die Hoffnung nicht auf, dass PO irgendwann nochmal mit dem Preis deutlich runtergehen kann. Bleibt vielleicht (wahrscheinlich) ein Traum, aber 1€ pro Bild wäre ja genial! :D Ja ich hab Deine Story gesehen, freue mich echt, dass es so schnell voran geht! :) Kann die Ergebnisse kaum erwarten. Auf Instagram habe ich schon gesehen, dass jemand eine Land Camera für Instax Wide umgebaut hat (ich glaube der Account heißt thepolaroidabides) und die Bilder sehen echt toll aus! Er hat glaube ich das Rückteil einer Lomo Instant Wide genommen, aber sah schon recht umständlich aus. Aber wie dem auch sei, erstmal freue ich mich auf den Rest des 4x5 Projekts! :)
Nope! All of my pictures are faded after several years. Sadly very important memories will disappear forever. I tried to fresh my childhood memories from Polaroid. I wanted to feel that old magic again. But this ,,new" film is make me sad. Expensive and unstable. ,,Polaroid originals" is not for making instant memories, just only for make huge profit from Polaroid lovers... (Sorry for my bad English knowledge!)
+guna pvc Their is no all in one best camera, if i had to choose one it would be the Polaroid SLR690, but it's more what you want to use it for that tells the camera to fit best. I dont have the biggest experience with Lomo cameras but what i used so far i really liked.
Puh that color shifts change from production to production ... sometimes you get green, the other time blue or as you have pink. I really dont know why PO can't produce a stable result, they are still researching and working on their chemistry.

I-Type: € 0,0320 / cm2 Instax Square: € 0,0260 / cm2 Instax Mini: € 0,0316 /cm2 So Instax Mini isn't really cheaper when it comes to the price per cm2 but you got more images and thats what most people keep in their head when they look at the price i guess.
You really don't, at least in Europe. I am that kind of nerd who has calculated the prices per sq cm of the image. Judging by the image area that you get, the PO I-Type film comes out slightly cheaper than the Instax Square. 8 bigger shots (79 x 79 mm) for €16 or 10 smaller shots (62 x 62 mm) for €14. In the end, it's a matter of taste and preference 😊
UniHumour ah ok. In the UK, instax square is £9... Polaroid is £16 - £18!! Big difference for me. Main issue for me though is the colour casts - when will they just sort it out? Happy shooting!
Wow! That IS a huge price difference! As for the color casts, I think it's possible they might never sort it out! Polaroid film has always been sensitive to temperature. As far as I know, the Japanese didn't like the reddish cast and made changes to the film formula. Personally, I shield my photos and keep them at an appropriate temperature, and I've been happy with the results. But PO depends on other manufacturers, and sometimes they use different negatives, which results in slightly different results with films of different production dates. However, even Instax doesn't look that great to me: whites can be too white, and blacks too black, thus washing out the details. It's great there is still a variety of formats, though! It's great to have choice. Happy shooting to you, too!
At first I thought that sth is wrong with my sx70. But now I see that Polaroid seems to deliberately make color film that looks like shit. Nostalgia my ass. Will stick to BnW then.
pretty much personal taste. 600 will be cheaper in base price, but you the i-type film is a bit cheaper so in the long run you could be cheaper with it.

+Alexander Hensel Natürlich sind alle sofortbilder weicher als ein negativ von film ich finde aber auch dies macht den charm aus. Grundsätzlich hängt die qualität sehr stark von der kamera ab und kann hier wirklich von gestochen scharf bis schwammig gehen. Kontrast ist bei Fuji besser da sind die Polaroids weicher.

Such a hard decision. I want a Polaroid because of the size of the picture and the nostalgia of it. I use to have the Barbie one until it broke. :/ I have the Instax mini and although I like it, I'm not a fan of how tiny the pictures are. I love that their new SQ6 has square photos even though it's still slightly small, but I sure wasn't a fan of their wide instax/film. I like the SQ6 too because it's small and easily carried and travel around with which I do a lot. I'm starting to lean towards the Instax because of how small and easy it is to carry around plus you get 2 extra films, but the nostalgic of the Polaroid one!

its not a hard decision, its a very simple decision , buy fuji instax , cheaper , better looking film , great colours , Polaroid, SUPER EXPENSIVe, film suck because reacts a lot at the temperature , so in 8 shots at 2.5 dolars each , you can get 2 good fotos , in fuji in 10 shots at the most expensive 0.74 cents you have 10 great photos .

For me the decision comes down to this:
*Fuji* - for quality of image and price
*Polaroid* - for the hardware and vintage look
The fuji films are significantly cheaper and the photos are significantly sharper with more accurate colors but the cameras are not as interesting or fun.
The only reason I really shoot Polaroid is to have a chance to use my SX-70 which is an amazing camera.
Often times, the Polaroid Originals film comes out with blemishes because the film is so "picky," which is not always great when you are spending $2 per picture. On the other hand, my fuji pictures almost always come out perfectly, unless I screw up the exposure.
If you prefer the "vintage" look and want to use some of the interesting and fun Polaroid cameras, then Polaroid film is you best bet. 🙂
yeah, i agree 100%. It is disingenuous to say Fuji is "a little bit cheaper". For what 8 shots of SX-70 costs
'i can get 3X as many Wide images. THREE TIMES AS MANY PHOTOS. This isn't "a little bit" it's an order of magnitude difference.
PO has improved in last 2 years, colors better, etc. But it STILL has problems, especially when it isn't fresh out of the factory. And now we have the "white fire" issue in 20-30% of frames.
They should be using R&D dollars on making better films and cameras, not silly colored cameras and frame borders.
Agreed. Polaroid’s library of cameras is abundant, and Fuji’s first party cameras are less aesthetically pleasing.
Have you looked into the third party cameras that take Fuji Instax film (e.g. Lomo’instant and MiNT)? They’re MUCH more expensive than what Polaroid has to offer, but their products are brand new, as opposed to being refurbished/used.
I shot Polaroid for 30 years and again when Impossible Project revived them. However, I love Fuji Instax....the sharpness and the color are so much better than Polaroid. The artsy, pastel, soft focus Polaroid disappoint and always have. The only reason I manipulated Polaroid images was because the Polaroid image straight from the camera wasn't very good and manipulation helped. And then there is the price.
I have both. I was given my granddad's Polaroid 600 on my 10th birthday. The film is expensive ( at least its gone down since originals) but it has this look that is so warm, Something unique. I use it for special occasions and any meaningful and preplanned photo I wanna take. I also have a instax mini 9. Its small but its something u can use, take photos with at a party, school, friends. Its just a nice social camera. But, it doesn't have that same warm, imperfect feel of the 600. Both are great in there own way. Both offer something tangible, that you can hold, pass round and there is only one of that exact photo.

Great video but a few things to point out - it looks like a lot of the video was focused on the "mainstream" Instax cameras and films (the ones produced by Fuji like the Mini 8/Mini 9).
In the US, you can get the Instax films in 20-packs for about $12 (Mini) or $15 (Wide) - these give you 2 1/2 times the shots from a Polaroid Originals pack for about 2/3rds of the price. There are also a lot of specialty framed films (probably 30-40 varieties from the licensed character ones to colored ones (Black film, Rainbow, Pastel, Sky blue).
For creativity, while the FUJI Instax cameras are very "safe", you can get very creative results using the LOMOGRAPHY cameras (AUTOMAT, AUTOMAT GLASS and WIDE) which give a much more retro feel, manual focusing, multiple lenses, studio light sync (on the wide) and multiple exposures/"Splitzer" photos.
I do really like the Polaroid look and feel, but I think something like the LOMOGRAPHY Instax cameras might be a better comparison to the Polaroid Originals.. just stay away from the original Lomo'Instant :)
Hey Mike, with the price yes Instax is cheaper thats what i said in my video and i did a price comaprison on one of the comments below with the prices we have in europe.
I-Type: € 0,0320 / cm2
Instax Square: € 0,0260 / cm2
Instax Mini: € 0,0316 /cm2
so it's not that much cheaper in europe with the prices you mention, it's a bit more but this calculation is per cm2 and not per picture
I only use Lomography cameras and i never talked about the standard fuji camera, dont know why you think so. I kinda like the Lomo cams but i'm as with Polaroid cameras missing the complete manual control.

I think a lomo is the best choice for me. I love the polaroid film, but it is just so expensive. And lomo brings such a more retro feel than the fuji instax cameras. So thank you for your comment; I did not know lomo had instant cameras
In all honesty I prefer Polaroid. It gives me that classic vintage beauty that I always look for in photos.

I have recently acquired a Polaroid impulse 600, and it is just awesome. I now have cameras from both companies and love both for their differences. Mind you, Polaroid film prices will make me think twice about pressing the shutter button but it's worth it regardless.
The problem I have with Impossible is that it is still too muddy of an image. People say it looks retro but I do not buy that. An image looks retro because its old and has time to fade, not because it is manufactured to look that way. What is it going to do once it starts to actually fade? I think you answered that when you mentioned your old Impossible B&W shots. Another thing, reds is a real problem with it. Every time I shoot something that is pure red, it shows up as dull orange.
I'm not sure Spectra uses the same chemistry as the 600 film. I shot the same thing the other day with Spectra and 600 and Spectra film showed much better blacks without a color cast in them.
Well there are a tone of different types of analog filmes that all have a distinct look to it, the one for Polaroid Originals Film at the moment is the "muddy" one. I really like that style since it fits my style of photography and i dont want the film to be as clean as Fuji Instax. I can't tell you how the current color film will be in the future, but with old color films i didn't have a problem only with the black and white films. If you dont like Polaroid Originals why dont you use Fuji Instax?

I do use Instax. But I still want to see Impossible do better. They've been relying too much on people liking the "instagram" look.

My spectra comes out very contrast-y
As someone who started with a Spectra and moved on to an sx-70, I can confirm that the spectra film looks closely like the instax in terms of contrast, but the colors are still softer.
I think it comes down to what camera you plan to use. With my my TL70 Instax Mini holds up and produces crisp even photos. If you plan to use any of these films with a point and shoot camera I HIGHLY suggest you purchase anything Instax. Youre going to come across so many bad shots might as well learn your camera with a less expensive film route. Polaroid is just too expensive in my opinion, especially for that "vintage" look. Being able to shoot double the amount with Instax wont discourage you on price and youll be able to figure out your camera settings so much quicker.

I have a sx-70 model 3 and a install mini 9 and its not comparible at all its totally different and depends on what you want, if you want to take a lot of photos that have same quality you buy instax, if you are more creative and want to "play" with the pictures and want that old school look you need the polaroid.. And dont forget the awsome smell of the polaroid when you open the pack!
So glad I stumbled on your channel - I have an old Polaroid One Step Flash which I had as a kid & just rediscovered (didn't think it would work, but happy days, it does!) I also have a lomo'instant automat which shoots instax mini (but with a lot more options than the fujifilm cameras I've used before) and I've had some ace results experimenting with ideas like putting blank 35mm negative film over the lens, so warm! Also just got an old Soviet 35mm camera called Cosmic Symbol (how could I not with a name like that?) super cheap & super excited for rediscovering my passion for analogue photography in this digital age! Your enthusiasm and love for the subject is obvious and I look froward to exploring your channel more... keep doing whatcha doin' - ya doin' it good! :D

I have both formats, I prefer shooting Polaroid 1000x more even with the price difference. Instax is cheaper but too clinical looking and the cameras all suck and are no fun shooting, I just use the mini for parties because it's cheap. If I'm shooting instant for fun, Polaroid all the way. I love the look and it's just the right size.

Well if you happen to be shooting a Fujifilm X-Series Camera or even their 100MP medium format cameras, Instax suddenly makes much more sense. You can permanently pair the instax printer and make a print while shooting a scene in just one button press. There is a reason why Fujifilm has invested so much into in camera raw conversion and editing tools. Such a nice workflow, spending more days shooting outside or in the studio and fewer hours in front of the computer.
Thank you! Yes I agree with you about the comparison. It's about the look and size: some people's preferences will always vary. I got my Polaroid last year (the OneStep2 and later bought a vintage SX70 and the newest, OneStep Plus). I've tried emulsion lifting with them, it's certainly fun! I have shot so much film that I should probably buy stakes in the company (hehehe!). I love this camera so much. The Fuji doesn't tempt me, although I can see the appeal for the price and for the size of the camera itself (it's more compact). For that reason when I need a smaller one to carry, I got an SX-70 (from a 2nd hand shop, it's one of the mid 1970's versions). It folds on itself and has a glass lens...but it's much more expensive compared to Fuji...but it's better to save money to get a better camera.
I actually quite like how Instax film looks. Both films have strong points, though the very long development time and the need for darkness for the Polaroid Originals films kind of break that for me, especially since in Canada a pack of PO costs 30 dollars.
Yes, it's all up to personal taste. Well the darkness is not the biggest point if you know how to cover the shot and let it develop inside of a pocket, there should be no problem. Also the new films are pretty good when it comes to how sensitive they are when coming out of the camera

Analog Things the double exposure looks fun. Maybe a step to step to do with double exposure, what you can do with the spectra format, now it's like that the sx-70 600 and I-type got all the attention.
Yeah Polaroid Originals is also not pushing the spectra format since the sales value is so much lower then for 600 and SX-70.

As a instant photographer I think you missed the mark completely on being creative, you have so mach technique to lern through composition, light, decisive moment and flash. I would agree with you on a lot of things in the video but in the end the price difference is substantial!!! And I don’t think you painted the right picture for people who don’t know what to choose.
Technique and creativity disent come from wormer color of the film or size or the better camera with bettr features (although they do help) it comes from trile and error.
The more you work at your craft the better you get. If you have the money to spend well done but if you don’t you can still be creative, and especially if you have limitations.
The only place I wish fuji would step it up is with there camera and make a professional instax wide with a fast lens and some creative features
I mean, you still can't make transparent instax pics or do emulsion lifts with the instax film, so I think that's a big contributor to it not being as "creative" as Polaroid. If that's not an issue for you and you're looking to get better photographs, instax would be a great choice. I personally think they're different in their own way enough to warrant eventually owning both tbh.

I shoot both Polaroid and Instax and I honestly find them to be the same as far as being creative is concerned. Although you can manipulate the print itself on Polaroids, I've found I have far more "in-camera" creativity on Instax format due to some of the offerings from companies like lomography. They released an Instax wide back for their Bel-air camera and have just launched a Diana f+ instant Square shooter. Well worth if if you're looking to experiment with instant photography on a budget. I'll hold onto my sx70 sonar until I die, but if it wasn't for the folks at MiNT I wouldn't have many "in camera" options to choose from 😂
Keep up the great work. I am awaiting my MINT RF70 pre-order and your video test for the RF70 was very helpful. I'm sticking with fuji INSTAX WIDE over Polaroid Originals (Impossible), I buy 1 pack of what they call Polaroid Originals about every 6 months, the quality is still sub par and I might get 4 decent images out of the 8..... it's nothing like the original polaroids... I know, I've still got images from the 70's right up to my spectra in the 90's and 2000's.... I enjoy your knowledge, thanks and again, keep up the great work...

My father used the old polaroid camera in 1962 and created on the couch 4 images of himself in black and white they were all smoking sitting on the couch with one standing all of them were the same black and white , looked like him all talking together. How did he do this, he did not photoshop or have DSLR? Does anyone know, please email and instruct me on how to achieve this effect on my picture. It was really extraordinary. He was quite a master of photography.
I've just got myself a Instax Mini 9 and a couple of fuji film, ran out the store and took a picture in a gloomy day oh wow went back to my child hood. Way back in the 80's in a Christmas (I was just a kid), I was given an original Polaroid the black one and I use to love that camera, for sure this new one will give me memories for ever with that cool look, great video thanks for the comparison :D
I'm a Polaroid fan, mainly because that's what I grew up with. I already had a 600 One step camera and am pleased to b e using it again.

Jed Teng , Fuji has its immense size and resources to put Polaroid under if they really wanted to. Cameras that take Instax film are very limited quality wise. There are so many vintage Polaroid cameras available. These cameras were brilliantly engineered and executed compared to the current crop, with MiNT’s TLR being the exception, albeit with the super tiny Instax mini film. MiNTS SLR670 with Time Machine is a fantastic redux of the incomparable SX-70 as an example of excellence.

Talking about price, Instax really wins. But many decades of Polaroid brought us very awesome cameras, decades of Fuji Instax didn't.
You won't find such neat models like a SX70 or Spectra/Image with Instax film. Whether it is the plastic lense, camera functions or the film itself.
I would really love to have a SX70 equivalent for Instax Wide, but it doesn't exist.
There are only 2-3 Instax cameras, that really make FUN while operating and shooting with them. One of them is an expensive SLR with Instax Mini film, the Neo 90 uses also the tiny film and the third one, one of those Lomography instant cameras with a glass lense and or many many functions like double-exposure et cetera.
All in all, shooting the film should be also enjoyable. And at the moment, for this purpose, below 300€s, there are only Polaroid cameras.
+MrChrodo Yeah, you are right when it come to the choice of camera Fuji Instax real lets us down, i also dont enjoy the cameras that much. But to be honest there is no camera that can match the SX-70 ;)

My main issue is that instax wide is a really good film but instax wide cameras are complete trash. The Polaroid Originals films are now much better than they were in their earlier generations (under the Impossible name) but they are still fickle and prone to various quirks. When they work they work well. But that's the whole problem. That said they are considerably better than they were before. Basically whether you use Instax or Polaroid Originals you're making a compromise somewhere.
i really do enjoy watching your videos, but i think you can afford to have more cut aways, close ups etc. it does get a bit stagnant after awhile.

How can anyone justify the longevity of Polaroid films vs Instax? Fuji's far older FP100 series are still relatively color fast, they've got their stuff down on lock

Great video Marco. What is your experience with color saturation and color rendition with the i-type film? By other reports, the Instax film tends to lend a more accurate color reproduction. I shoot with Fuji instax cameras and film: have had poor luck with the Lomo automat glass: lens flare was so distracting I sent the camera back.

And don't get me started on the multicolor frames. Nobody likes those. Every store I go to, the regular 600, B&W 600, and i-type films are sold out. Except the mulitcolor packs. Plenty of those at every store.
Well, see the positive side of it ... if it doesn't sell it will be up for a reduced price and you can use it for lifts.

Is it possible to edit the Fuji film while it is produced? I'm talking about using metal while it is produced (scraping it or sth), leaving it under the sun, or in cold/warm surfaces, or even using various chemicals.
Is it possible that the polaroid 600 film will work with the fujifilm sq10? Theyre both square format and the same size so essentially it should work right?

You got to be kidding, Instax film is much better than Polaroid. It has stronger colours, better contrast, is sharper and develops much quicker. Plus Polaroid film can be unreliable, sometimes you'll get colour banding on the photo or parts of the photo undeveloped with areas just covered by a brown tinge.
I honestly prefer the Polaroid. I tried Fuji, but Polaroid felt more natural

Hey Alex, yeah could do one but the frog tongue doesn't have to much effect to the film anymore. If PO will send me some films i will do a comparison.
Instax has better chimestry and last longer and it's cheaper. As to creativity with the film it's all up to the photographer. My instax film can be moody vintage anytime I want. I can manipulate fuji instax chimestry in many ways and get the results I want. Fuji instax it's definitely more reliable material to work with. All my polaroid film has faded in some degree over time not instax. Your creativity is not limited by the film itself but by your imagination.

Die Instax Mini Filme sind relativ günstig, haben tolle Kameras mit vielen kreativen Funktionen (Mini 90, Automat Glass, TL70), dafür sind die Bilder so winzig, dass man kaum Details erkennen kann... Dagegen sind die Instax Wide Filme schön groß, bei manchen Motiven gefällt mir das Format da fast besser als das Polaroid’sche Quadrat ;). Aaaaber kaum gute Kameras, aka Dämlicher Auto-Blitz bei Fuji und (meiner Meinung nach) schlechte Linsen mit merkwürdigen Flares bei Lomo. Und falls ich mich nicht irre gibt es für das Wide Format nicht einmal den S/W Film... Vom Instax Square Format bin ich bisher noch nicht überzeugt, aber wohl nur, weil die SQ10 eine Digitale Kamera ist. Mal sehen wie sich die Lomo da schlägt. (Aber auch das Format ist wieder zu klein...)
Und auf der anderen Seite hat man dann die PO Filme, die einfach unschlagbar sind, weil sie alles richtig machen was Format, Kreativität und auch Kameras angeht. Auch die Vielfalt der Filme ist sehr schön und praktisch, man kann immer wieder etwas Neues ausprobieren. Wäre da nur nicht dieser Preeeeeis 😰 Für mich als arme Studentin ist dieses Problem wahrscheinlich noch etwas präsenter, aber der Preisunterschied ist schon deutlich. Bekomme 20 instax Mini für 14,95€ und 8 PO 600 für 18,99€, das tut manchmal schon weh muss ich sagen... 😅
Aber wie immer, wenn man sich nicht entscheiden kann: ich benutze beides. 🤷🏽♀️
Freut mich aber auch zu hören, dass es mit dem 4x5 Prototyp so gut voran geht. :) Hoffe, dass es funktioniert. Eventuell könnte man sich ja dann auch mal daran wagen, die alten Land Cameras zu modden, beispielsweise für Instax Wide. Könnte mir vorstellen, dass die guten Kameras und der Film sich vertragen würden. :D Wäre einfach zu schade, wenn sie nach dem letzten Packfilm nur noch als Deko verstauben müssten... Bin auf jeden Fall voll dabei bei solchen Projekten, find ich super, dass Du sowas machst :)

Mit Instax Mini kann ich auch nicht wirklich was anfangen die Wide finde ich dafür ganz cool die Lomo Wide ist ganz ok für fotos und auch die normale Fuji Wide ist eine möglichkeit, ich warte ja seit ewigkeiten das Lomo ihr Belair Rückteil wieder verkauft aber ich glaube da bin ich schneller wenn ich selber ein neues entwickle.
Ja diese Preisfrage ist nicht so einfach aber ich hab hier eine kleine Rechnung gemacht wieviel man pro cm2 bildfläche bei den unterschiedlichen filmen zahlt
I-Type: € 0,0320 / cm2
Instax Square: € 0,0260 / cm2
Instax Mini: € 0,0316 /cm2
PO ist garnicht soviel teurer als man glaub im vergleich zu Instax Mini, natürlich bekommt man aber bei Instax Mini mehr Fotos raus und das auf das schauen die leute halt.
Das 4x5 geht wirklich gut vorran auf Instagram hab ich gestern eh eine Story dazu gepostet. Ende des Jahres will ich eignetlich mein erste Foto damit machen, schauen wir mal. Ja dieses Land kamera ding ist schon in meinem kopf und hat sich ziemlich festgesetzt, aber ich hab noch keine idee wie ich es lösen kann, skizzen sind aber schon vorhanden und es wird immer weiter daran geschraubt, irgendwann gibt es sicher was dazu, aber vorher mal das Belair nachbauen.
Hätte auch wirklich gerne eine Instax Wide Kamera, aber auf meiner Liste steht jetzt erstmal die SX-70 ganz oben, danach schaue ich ich da mal um. :D
Bezogen auf die Bildgröße sind die Preise natürlich schon ähnlich, aber gerade wenns ums ausprobieren und kreativ sein geht muss man ja schon eher nach der Anzahl der Bilder gehen. Experimentiere deshalb eher mit den Instax Minis, obwohl es mit den Polaroids bestimmt noch spaßiger wäre. Aber ich gebe die Hoffnung nicht auf, dass PO irgendwann nochmal mit dem Preis deutlich runtergehen kann. Bleibt vielleicht (wahrscheinlich) ein Traum, aber 1€ pro Bild wäre ja genial! :D

Auf Instagram habe ich schon gesehen, dass jemand eine Land Camera für Instax Wide umgebaut hat (ich glaube der Account heißt thepolaroidabides) und die Bilder sehen echt toll aus! Er hat glaube ich das Rückteil einer Lomo Instant Wide genommen, aber sah schon recht umständlich aus. Aber wie dem auch sei, erstmal freue ich mich auf den Rest des 4x5 Projekts! :)

It is possible and i managed todo a view but, it's a pain. The film is super fragile and sticky, will never turn out as good as a BW one

I tried to fresh my childhood memories from Polaroid. I wanted to feel that old magic again. But this ,,new" film is make me sad. Expensive and unstable. ,,Polaroid originals" is not for making instant memories, just only for make huge profit from Polaroid lovers...

Puh that color shifts change from production to production ... sometimes you get green, the other time blue or as you have pink. I really dont know why PO can't produce a stable result, they are still researching and working on their chemistry.

First of all Thanks ;) Well i wasn't sure about that and just did the math, something i should have done before this video.

So Instax Mini isn't really cheaper when it comes to the price per cm2 but you got more images and thats what most people keep in their head when they look at the price i guess.

You really don't, at least in Europe. I am that kind of nerd who has calculated the prices per sq cm of the image. Judging by the image area that you get, the PO I-Type film comes out slightly cheaper than the Instax Square. 8 bigger shots (79 x 79 mm) for €16 or 10 smaller shots (62 x 62 mm) for €14. In the end, it's a matter of taste and preference 😊
UniHumour ah ok. In the UK, instax square is £9... Polaroid is £16 - £18!! Big difference for me. Main issue for me though is the colour casts - when will they just sort it out? Happy shooting!
Wow! That IS a huge price difference! As for the color casts, I think it's possible they might never sort it out! Polaroid film has always been sensitive to temperature. As far as I know, the Japanese didn't like the reddish cast and made changes to the film formula. Personally, I shield my photos and keep them at an appropriate temperature, and I've been happy with the results. But PO depends on other manufacturers, and sometimes they use different negatives, which results in slightly different results with films of different production dates. However, even Instax doesn't look that great to me: whites can be too white, and blacks too black, thus washing out the details. It's great there is still a variety of formats, though! It's great to have choice. Happy shooting to you, too!

pretty much personal taste. 600 will be cheaper in base price, but you the i-type film is a bit cheaper so in the long run you could be cheaper with it.

+Alexander Hensel Natürlich sind alle sofortbilder weicher als ein negativ von film ich finde aber auch dies macht den charm aus. Grundsätzlich hängt die qualität sehr stark von der kamera ab und kann hier wirklich von gestochen scharf bis schwammig gehen. Kontrast ist bei Fuji besser da sind die Polaroids weicher.

Polaroid originals fade over time. You think they would get it stabilized by now. Impossible Project films are garbage.
