I hear this heartbreakingly beautiful work in concert too few times. Shame that (my wife and) I didn't know about this performance at the time; I'm sure that she, a superb voice pedagogue, would've approved of this mezzo's fine voice and approach...and the whole effort is equally superb, on ALL parts; Herreweghe is a mark of quality, as is the HR orchestra. Exemplary diction right up there with my former teacher the late Soprano, Chloe Owen who studied with Hans Hotter. This is an exquisite instrument evenness of tone, supple and colored beautifully. Beautiful messa di voce. Some people prefer a contralto singing this.
Well I heard it all, not just the alto soloist. The Men of the Chorus were superb and I enjoyed the alto soloist as well as the hr-S. The only thing that could have been different: I would like to have seen the alto soloist turn around and acknowledge/thank the Men of the Chorus because they were an equal part of the performance. Maybe she did that and the camera didn't show that.
L'urkestra la par indurmentada, senza nerv, senza gnanca al sensu dal tragic da la situazion. La us da la Ann Hallenberg la meritéa un diretur d'urkerstra un pit plü dinamic, cun un pitt plü d'ernergia vitala. ( In lengua pusclavina).
Una cosa que no havia percebut mai, en aquesta orquestra, és veure com els músics toquen de gust; les expressions de solemnitat i sensibilitat acompanyen la música sublim de Brahms. (sobretot per la "Flautista Concertino").
Ha ragione Aaron de Zibenseisz, nel suo commento dell'anno scorso: forse Herreweghe è più a suo agio con la musica antica, ma qui, in Brahms, perde tutta la potente drammaticità della composizione. Sembra tutto in sordina, e la pur brava Ann Hallenberg, forse per paura di sovrastare un'orchestra asfittica, per lo più bisbiglia e pare anche lei senza fiato...
Esecuzione un poco in sordina,senza molto coinvolgimento, non entrano nella dimensione assai intima del colloquio tra contralto e coro. Tuttavia mi commuove sempre.

Je trouve cette interprétation très belle avec un juste équilibre entre la vois et l'orchestre.

But she is clearly not a contralto!
